What is the difference between the word do and make

She made lunch for her parents.

In both of the first two sentences, the word make is used in the sense of ‘create’ and hence the meaning of the first sentence would be ‘a sculptor creates sculptures’, and the meaning of the second sentence would be ‘a designer creates designs’. In the last sentence, make means ‘prepare.’ So, the meaning would be ‘she prepared lunch for her parents.’

It is interesting to note that the word make is sometimes used in the sense of ‘achieve’ as in the sentence given below.

He can make it for sure.

Here, the word make is used in the sense of ‘achieve’ and hence, the meaning of the sentence would be ‘he can achieve it for sure’. Sometimes, the word make is used in the sense of ‘manufacture’ and hence, it is used as a noun also as in the sentence given below.

Most errors appear where there are differences in how and when ‘make’ and ‘do’ are used in English vs. your native language. Let’s look at some basic theory to understand the general meaning of ‘make’ vs. ‘do’ in English.

The verb make is used when talking about creation or production in a process. In other words, it is used to refer to the result of an action. For example: ‘Make a cup of tea’, ‘Make plans for the future’ or ‘Make a model boat out of wood’.

Made can be used to indicate the material of a product. For example, we can say that a spoon is ‘made of steel’. In this case, we would say made, as in the past tense of make. The creation has already taken place and now the spoon is made of steel.

How to use DO

I will do – I am doing – I did – I have done

The verb ‘do’ is used when we talk about tasks, duties, obligations and routine work. It refers to the process of carrying out these actions. This verb is similar to the formal words perform or execute (as in: execute a command). For example: ‘I did my homework yesterday evening.’ (completed task).

Another use of the verb do is to replace a different verb in the context of a clear or straightforward result. For example: ‘Do the dishes’ (vs. wash the dishes). ‘Do my hair’ means cut, dye, style or perform another similar action on my hair. The word ‘do’ can also be used for recreational and individual sports, such as martial arts. For example: ‘Do karate twice a week’ (take part in this sporting activity, perhaps by attending a class).

Native speakers often use ‘do’ in the way described above. If you want your English to sound more natural, then you should learn how to use ‘do’ as a substitute for other verbs. Read on to find more examples of this!

Remember that ‘do’ can be used as an auxiliary verb in questions and for added emphasis. In these contexts, it is not used to mean ‘performing an action’.

Do in questions: In ‘Do you like music?’ the word ‘do’ is just used to indicate a question. ‘You like music.’ would be a fact. Learners often make the mistake of leaving out the ‘do’ in English questions because in their own language rising intonation is enough. Only in informal English is this possible where the context is 100% clear. For example, just: ‘Coffee?’ (when you are about to pour a cup and you are asking for your friend’s permission).

Do for emphasis: In ‘Lucy thinks I don’t love her, but I do. I really do!’ the use of ‘do’ shows the contradiction between what Lucy thinks and what the speaker feels.
In summary, ‘do’ usually refers to the process and ‘make’ refers to the result or creative aspect of the process. For example, you would do some cooking (process), but you would make dinner (result).

The word ‘do’ can be used informally as a noun in British English when referring to a social event or party. For example, ‘Are you going to Mike’s birthday do next Saturday?’ or ‘There’s a do on at the local (pub) this weekend, if you fancy it.’

NOTE: Football, rugby, cricket, basketball, tennis, etc. usually to take ‘play’ and not ‘do’.

    ‘I work for a large law firm. What do you do (for a living)?’
  • Do business (= Trade, buy or sell)
    Doing business internationally can be a real challenge.’
    ‘Our company mostly does business with local suppliers.’

In Spanish, both ‘make’ and ‘do’ can be translated as the single word ‘HACER’. Does your native language have a distinction between ‘make’ and ‘do’? Perhaps these concepts are expressed in a different way than in English.

  • Do work (= Carry out a job or task)
    ‘Can you please stop distracting me? I really need to do some work this afternoon!’
  • Do a deal (= Agree a contract or arrangement)
    ‘I heard you’re doing a deal with Sony. That’s great news for the company!’
  • Do a project (= Execute a planned set of tasks)
    ‘Our firm is doing a joint project with a company from Holland.’
  • Do your job (= Perform your work-related tasks)
    ‘If you do your job well, you can expect a nice bonus at the end of the year.’
  • Do an operation (= Perform a surgical procedure)

  • Do an experiment (= Carry out an experiment)
    ‘We’re doing an experiment at work to examine the effects of stress on productivity.’

    ‘I know you didn’t have enough time to revise for the exam, but just do your best!
  • Do good (= Perform an act of kindness, be of benefit to your health)
    ‘Charities in Africa think they’re doing good, but perhaps that’s not always the case.’

The noun ‘do-gooder’ is a negative term for a person who tries to help others, but is seen to be an interfering nuisance. We can also use the funny expression ‘goodie-two-shoes’ about a person who tries to be good and follow the rules all the time!

  • Do the right thing (= Act in a morally correct way)
    ‘Divorces are never easy, but I’m sure you’ll both do the right thing by your kids.’
  • Do your duty (= Fulfil your responsibility)
    ‘Soldiers need to do their duty to their country in times of war.’
  • Do a favour (= Help another person)
    ‘Can you do me a big favour and pick the kids up from school tomorrow?’
  • Do something right/wrong (= Carry out an action correctly/incorrectly)
    ‘You must have done something wrong because now the computer isn’t working at all.’
    ‘Beautiful wife, smart kids, great job…you must be doing something right!’ (In life)
  • Do well/badly (= Perform well/badly)
    ‘Mary did well in her exams, but her brother did badly (in his exams).’ 
  • Do harm (= Hurt, injure)
    ‘It wouldn’t do you any harm to help me with the housework once in a while!’ 
  • Do damage (= Harm someone or something)
    ‘The accident did some serious damage to the side of my car!’
  • Do a lot (= Perform frequently, make a valuable contribution)
    ‘George does a lot for the local community through his volunteer work.’
    ‘Do you do a lot of cycling during the week?’
  • Do the (bare) minimum (= Put minimum effort into something)
    ‘When it comes to tidying the office, my colleagues always do the bare minimum!’

In everyday conversation, it is more common to say ‘made of’. For example, ‘What’s your guitar made of – wood or fibre glass?’. We can also move the material type into the adjective position, as in: ‘wooden guitar’ or ‘glass vase’. Only use ‘made up of’ in scientific or formal contexts.

e) Compensate for, add missing money/time

‘If you pay your share of the bill, then I will make up the difference.’
‘I was off work with a cold last week so now I’m making up the time by staying late.’

If you are buying a house in the UK, you can save a lot of money by choosing a “doer-upper”. This is a slang term for a house that you need to ‘do up’ or renovate. Properties like this are usually much cheaper, but require some hard work and investment.

The verbs «make» and «do» are two of the most common in the English language and two of the most easily confused. Although they both imply activity, they function differently in sentences. Generally speaking, «do» relates to physical tasks and activities that are vague or indefinite, while «make» refers to a specific outcome or object created by that activity. This guide will help you learn the difference between the two verbs.

Activities

Use the verb «do» to express daily activities or jobs. Notice that these are usually activities that produce no physical object.

  • I usually do my homework after dinner.
  • Both my mother and father do the housework.
  • I like to do the ironing while I watch TV.
  • Tom does a few jobs around the house.

General Ideas

«Do» is also used when speaking about things in general.

  • I’m not doing anything today.
  • He does everything for his mother.
  • She’s doing nothing at the moment.

Expressions Using «Do»

There are a number of standard expressions that take the verb «do.» These are collocations (verb/noun combinations) that are used in English.

  • A trip in the country will do you good.
  • Can you do me a favor?
  • We do business in countries around the world.

Constructing, Building, Creating

Use the verb «make» to express an activity that creates something tangible.

  • Let’s make hamburgers this evening.

Firstly, the most important aspect of the word «do» is that it performs an important grammatic function in the English language.

  • Do you know that man?

  • How do you do that?

  • You do know that it is dangerous, right?

These are special uses in which «do» basically does not contribute any meaning, but only serves a grammatical role.

For instance, when questions are formed in the English language, a process known as «subject-aux inversion» occurs. That is to say, the syntax of a declarative sentence is usually along a pattern such as «subject aux verb object». When we ask a question, the subject and auxiliary verb reverse position: «aux subject verb object?».

Here is an example. Starting with the declarative sentence «You have been to Hawaii», we identify the subject «you», auxiliary «have», and the verb «been». In forming the question, the subject and aux switch places: «Have you been to Hawaii?»

Now here is another example of a declarative: «You know the time». Here the subject is «you», the verb is «know» and the object is «time». But wait, where is the auxiliary? There isn’t one: the auxiliary is null: «You /null/ know the time». When «You /null/ know the time» becomes a question, subject-aux inversion takes place like this: «/null/ you know the time?». We cannot have a null element at the beginning of a sentence, so a (theoretical) process known as «do affixing» takes place: the null auxiliary spot is replaced by the filler word «do»: «Do you know the time?». The invisible auxiliary becomes visible as do!

In the sentence «You do know it is dangerous, right?», do is used for emphasis. It basically also looks like a case of the empty auxiliary position becoming visible: «You know it is dangerous» becomes «You do know it is dangerous?» If a sentence has no auxiliary verb, you can put the word «do» where the auxiliary would go, without changing the basic meaning, but changing the sense: adding emphasis in statements, or seeking confirmation in questions.

Interestingly, if «do» is used emphasizing that a confirmation is needed in response to a question, then the subject-aux inversion is prevented from taking place. A regular question might be, «Do you understand it?» But a confirmation-seeking question is «You do understand it? Right?» The empty auxiliary changes to «do» for emphasis, but stays where it is, because if it moved to the front, then the result would be an ordinary question.

So, the point is: There is a special use of do as an auxiliary verb, a role which the verb «make» does not have. «Make» is never an auxiliary verb.

Secondly, «do» functions as a kind of «verbal pronoun», similarly to the word «it». Just like we can use the word «it» to refer to some previously discussed noun phrase, we can use the word «do» to refer to a previous verb phrase, particularly in conjunction with «do it» or «do that».

  • Can you water my plants while I’m away?

  • Yes, I can do that.

Here, «do that» stands in place of «water your plants». The word «make» cannot be used in this way; it is another special role of «do».

«Do» is also an verb, independently of its special grammatic roles. It means to carry out some action: any kind of action. It is also an euphimism for sexual intercourse. («I heard John and Mary are doing it!»)

«Make» means to construct or produce something («make a chair out of wood»); to create or cause a situation to be («make trouble») («make a sound»); to succeed or attain something («we had hard times, but we made it through») («I made it for the last train out of the city»), to earn money («how much do you make per year?»); to show up to a prearranged meeting («I’m glad you were able to make it»), to force someone or something («please don’t make me do that») («It was the wrong part for the car, but I modified it to make it fit»); to configure a situation or put something into effect («The new law makes it a violation to smoke in restaurants»); a euphimism for avoiding death («The passenger walked away from the crash with minor injuries, but the driver didn’t make it»); to pass some selection process («Derek made the football team this year.») («You’ve really made the grade»). In none of theses uses can «make» be replaced by «do». A mix-up here can be disastrous: consider «Derek did the football team», whose only interpretation is the sexual one.

Then there are various uses of both «make» and «do» with prepositions or other words which have specific meanings. The words «do» and «make» are not interchangeable, and have completely different meanings when used in cominations with the same words.

  • make up (invent a story or lie): «That story about how you fell out of an airplane and surived, you clearly made that up!»

  • do up (fasten): «Your bootlace is loose; do it up!» (Completely different from «make up»).

  • make out (distinguish an unclear image or sound): «There is too much noise, so I cannot make out what he is saying».

  • make of (to form conclusions or opinions about something based on observation): «What do you make of the company’s new strategy?

  • make believe (pretend): «The children climbed into the carboard box, and made believe they were in a ship.» (Do believe is simply emphasis of «believe»: «I do believe you’re right»).

Make and do can be combined to form «make do», which means to function in some inconvenient way due to not having all of the desired or ideal resources available. «When Jack retired, he had to figure out how to make do on a tiny pension. Eventually he found work to boost his income.»
