Seriously slow on the latest iPad Pro
I am using an iPad Pro 256GB Wifi + Cellular version and I am extremely disappointed on the speed and features of the app. Not sure if the app or iPad Pro is to blame but the vlookup, match functions are just not working as gracefully as it should be. Each time I input a number, it would take 5 seconds to return the correct values and it is just not acceptable on an advanced device like the iPad Pro. I have to admit that my spreadsheet has over 50,000 of rows, 30+ columns and 10+ spreadsheets but there are no macros and images used at all. And for anyone who relies on Excel to process this huge amount of data, this is just a very common scale of a spreadsheet, not to mention it is only 10MB. Either Apple or Mircosoft seriously needs to look into resolving this issue or there’s just no point of having this powerful application on the iPad.
Always disappointing and frustrating to use
March 2023 and I still feel the same way about this app. Now I cannot trust the app to save changes. It reports that changes are saved but I keep randomly losing data if I edit using my mobile devices. OLD REVIEW: There isn’t a single time I’ve used this app to create spreadsheets that I haven’t finished disappointed or disgusted. Every time I create a spreadsheet with tables and charts Excel just fails. A simple exercise to grab a table of dividend distributions from a web page, paste into Excel, calculate the average dividend and average NAV, and then chart the NAV and dividends with trend lines seems to be too much for Excel to handle. It usually finishes off by locking up when I am frustrated and decide to save to OneDrive so I can finish my work on a Windows PC. The next most frustrating problem is editing a formula. I don’t understand why dragging the cursor through a formula can lead to so many different selection mistakes. I dare you to try placing the cursor at the start of a cell reference or between a string of multiple open parentheses. Top that off by the totally inept programming of moving the cursor using the space bar. The inertia of the cursor seems to change randomly and toggles between “it isn’t going to move at all” to “how did the cursor get way over there so fast?!” Viewing existing spreadsheets seems to work pretty well. This is the only reason I gave this app two stars instead of one.
Working offline, functionality loss and privacy encroachments
I have to build work-arounds in the Ipad version of Excel. The most aggravating one being the fact that I have to be logged into my account in Excel even to work offline. I have to work around that by putting my Ipad in airplane mode. It is not appropriate that the Excel user who chooses the portability of the Ipad should be logged into an online account in order to use the product. And with every new iteration of Microsoft’s renewed user agreement, I grow more suspicious of Microsoft’s encroachment into my privacy. I do not have the time to read the minutia of the dozen pages of legalese. My choices are accept what ever new level of data privacy I am surrendering to Microsoft or don’t use the product. For this reason, I am presently learning Apple’s Number’s program. Once I get used to the loss of functionality Numbers may not have over Excel, I plan to abandon Excel altogether. I realize that there may be limitations on the Ipad version of Excel due to copyright, intellectual property agreements, and patent infringements between Microsoft and Apple, but these petty rivalries only make Microsoft look worse. And it does not excuse Microsoft from not making a fully functional version of Excel that can be used on the Ipad.

Back in April 2014, I wrote about the first release of Microsoft’s
Excel for iPad, and I found it to have a well-designed UI and most of the features of the desktop version. It was missing some things, like the ability to print, but it was an impressive debut. The biggest issue, of course, was cost: You needed a $100 per year Office 365 subscription to create workbooks.
As of version 1.2, released in early November, that restriction has vanished:
Excel for iOS can now be used to create spreadsheets, for no cost at all. The only caveat is that you must sign in using a free Microsoft account. If you don’t have one, you can register directly from the app’s home screen. The form isn’t overly complicated, though Microsoft does require a birth date and telephone number. What I thought was a required gender pop-up thankfully offers a “not specified” option—there’s no reason Microsoft needs to know one’s gender.
Once the account is created, you can log in and start using Excel. And you’ll get nearly the same experience as those paying for Office 365. What can’t you do with the free version? You can’t customize pivot table styles and layouts (but you can’t create pivot tables in Excel for iOS anyway); add custom colors to shapes; insert and edit WordArt; add shadows and reflection styles to pictures; and add or modify chart elements (you can add charts for free, but you can’t customize them).
But everything else I tried worked just fine. Creating, modifying, saving, printing… whatever the task, the free version never complained or cajoled me. I was able to see an upgrade box only when I went to modify a chart I had created; beyond that, the free version was functionally equivalent to the paid version I was using on another iPad.
If you want the premium features, you can get them via Office 365 Personal (one computer, one tablet, one phone) for $7 per month, or Office 365 Home (up to five of each device type) for $10 per month. You’ll also get one terabyte of OneDrive storage, which can be used both in Excel and as a general cloud storage drive.
Enter Dropbox
Dropbox is fully integrated into Excel, appearing next to OneDrive in Open and Save screens, as well as on the app’s Account screen.
In addition to free editing, Microsoft has added Dropbox support to Office; enter your Dropbox account details, and you can work with Dropbox as easily as you can with OneDrive. I’ll admit I was surprised by this move; Dropbox is a direct competitor to OneDrive, but it’s great to see Microsoft admitting that people do use other services. (Pay attention here, Apple!)
Dropbox integration seems first-rate; you login to your Dropbox account, and it then appears in the list of Places you can save and open things, right alongside OneDrive. I was able to open, modify, and save my Dropbox spreadsheets without any issues at all.
Universally available
The app is also universal, and has been optimized for smaller screens. While this is true, and Excel looks great on my iPhone 6, the reality is that it’s still really hard to work on a spreadsheet on a phone-sized device. While I can see nearly as many cells on the iPhone as on my iPad—out to G and down to 33 on the iPad versus E and 32 on the iPhone—those cells are much smaller (and thus, harder to tap).
Much of the iPhone’s limited screen space is lost when working with the Ribbon.
There’s also no room for the ribbon on the iPhone’s screen; to call up the ribbon, you must first tap an Edit icon, which opens an edit area that takes up about a third of the screen. From there, you tap another pop-up to select, for instance, Formulas, and then scroll through the formula browser. On the iPad, the ribbon is always visible, and choosing a ribbon item only loses one line of the display.
In short, if you plan on doing much with your spreadsheets, you’ll want to work with them on an iPad, not an iPhone.
Other areas of change (or non-change)
In my original review, it was noted that Excel for iPad lacked the ability to print; that was addressed in a prior update, and printing worked fine in my testing. You can also now edit unlocked cells on protected worksheets, which wasn’t possible before.
The other limitations noted in my original review still apply: You can see and delete comments but not create or edit them; you can’t name cells or ranges, create conditional formatting rules, or enter array formulas. You can’t insert images from OneDrive (or Dropbox), only from the iOS device’s photos. As before, Excel is still a one-thing-at-a-time app—if you’re working with two or more spreadsheets, you have to fully close one to open the other one.
There are a few other areas of difference between the iOS, Mac, and Windows versions of Excel; if you open help in Excel for iOS, you can see a chart that lays out the differences between each platform.
Bottom line
If you’re looking for a powerful spreadsheet app for iOS that makes it seamless to work between a Mac, a Windows machine, and any number of iOS or Windows Phone devices, Excel for iOS is for you. Microsoft’s new “free to create” pricing model, which requires only a free Microsoft account, means that Excel will be truly free for most users. Unless you’re creating and editing graphs in Excel for iOS, you’ll probably find that the free version meets your needs.
Microsoft has really pulled a complete change of direction with this new version of Excel: The old version didn’t let you really do anything without paying, while the new version lets you do nearly everything without paying. I’m not sure how well it will work out in the long run, but for now, it means you can get a great on-the-go spreadsheet app for nothing.

Если прежняя версия для iPad была условно-бесплатной (т.е. скачать её можно в любой момент, но за пользование нужно платить каждый месяц или каждый год), то основные возможности Office for iPhone бесплатны для всех и каждого. Так компания планирует удерживать верных клиентов в своей экосистеме.
Конечно же, для начала работы необходимо приложение Office for iPhone. Если на вашем смартфоне установлен Office Mobile от Microsoft, смело его удаляйте. Увы (или к счастью – кто знает), единого приложения для «офиса» больше нет. Office для iPhone – это четыре отдельные друг от друга программы.
Загрузите из App Store или iTunes нужные приложения – Word for iPhone, Excel for iPhone, PowerPoint for iPhone и OneNote for iPhone. Понадобится хорошее Интернет-соединение, «лёгкими» программы Microsoft не назовешь при всем желании.
Второе важное условие – для работы с офисными приложениями понадобится Microsoft Account. Это – та же учетная запись, что используется для входа на Windows 8.x-компьютер, устройство с Windows Phone, Xbox One / 360, Outlook.com, Office 2013 и другие продукты и сервисы IT-гиганта из Редмонда. Настройка Office for iPhone
После первого открытия приложения вы сразу же увидите небольшую инструкцию. Пролистайте её свайпом влево.
Теперь – самое время войти в Microsoft Account. В принципе, работать можно и без него, но тогда будут потеряны полезные «фичи» вроде синхронизации данных на всех устройствах. Сначала введите адрес электронной почты, на который зарегистрирован Microsoft Account, затем пароль от аккаунта или пройдите регистрацию здесь же.
Далее следует разобраться с тем, какой Office нужен для работы. Microsoft предлагает бесплатно создавать и редактировать документы. Премиум-предложения включают в себя Office 365 для одного планшета, смартфона и ПК/Мас. За такой набор гаджетов с Office придется заплатить 199 рублей в месяц. Для более серьезных запросов (по 5 компьютеров, планшетов и смартфонов) предлагается другой пакет с ценой в 269 рублей / мес. В обмен Microsoft предложит бесплатную установку офисных приложений на ваш компьютер и 1 терабайт свободного места в облачном хранилище OneDrive, а также дополнительные функции для работы на iPhone.
Давайте выберем Создать и редактировать бесплатно – базовый (и достаточный для большинства пользователей) бесплатный функционал.
Использование Office for iPhone
Вы увидите все документы, созданные в последних версиях Office – от Office 2013 до Office Online. Так как мы пользуемся Word, то, соответственно, видны все документы данного формата. Все организовано по дате создания и последнему открытию. Старые документы находятся в нижней части экрана, новые – в верхней.
Можно создать новый документ, сделать свой собственный документ по шаблону, открыть совместимый файл из облачного хранилища (Dropbox). Отредактировать файл тоже очень просто – достаточно коснуться экрана в нужном месте, и из нижней части экрана сразу же выйдет клавиатура iPhone.
Нажатие на букву «А» в верхней части экрана вызывает настройки форматирования – можно выделить фрагмент текст жирным, курсивом, подчеркиванием и т.п.
Работа в Excel и PowerPoint на iPhone выглядит примерно так же. Вся разница – лишь в специфике программ; если в Word это слова, то в Excel это электронные таблицы, а в PP – изображения. Приятная мелочь – достаточно зарегистрироваться в одном приложении, и каждый раз входить в свой Microsoft Account при переходе в другую программу не придется. Ещё одно замечание – PowerPoint на iPhone можно пользоваться только в ландшафном режиме.

Офисные программы для Mac
Microsoft предлагает больше приложений для создания электронного офиса
Вот приложения, которые входят в состав Microsoft Office:
- Microsoft Word – популярный текстовый редактор;
- Microsoft Excel – программа для работы с таблицами;
- Microsoft PowerPoint – программа для работы с презентациями;
- Microsoft OneNote – программа для создания быстрых заметок и организации личной информации;
- Microsoft Outlook – почтовый клиент;
- Microsoft Publisher – текстовый редактор с акцентом на проектирование разметки страницы;
- Microsoft Access – ПО для работы с базами данных.
Для меня, как для студента, была важна только возможность работать с текстами, таблицами и презентациями, соответственно, использовал я только первые три программы из пакета. Поэтому, сравнивать я буду их с альтернативами от Apple. Так что же компания предлагает взамен? Пакет приложений получил название iWork. В него входят всего три программы: Pages, Keynote и Numbers. Не густо.
Pages или Word — что выбрать
Pages, в отличие от Word, предоставляется бесплатно для всех пользователей, хотя оба обладают примерно сопоставимой функциональностью. Они позволяют форматировать тексты, создавать брошюры и визитки. Обладают функцией проверки правописания, добавления изображения, таблиц и форм. Готовые файлы можно отправлять другим пользователям и печатать. Программа Apple Pages тесно интегрирована с iCloud. Как только вы нажмете кнопку «Сохранить», она сохранит файл в папке iCloud по умолчанию. Microsoft Word, в свою очередь, доступен повсеместно.
Pages и Word – практически одинаковые приложения от разных компаний
Если же вас привлекает лаконичный дизайн и большой набор эксклюзивных шрифтов, то лучше воспользоваться Pages. В целом, приложения очень похожи функционально, а их отличие заключается только в интерфейсе, который, на мой взгляд, реализован лучше у Apple. Также у тех, кто решится перейти на Pages не возникнут проблемы с совместимостью. По умолчанию, все документы здесь сохраняются в формате pages. Экспортировать файл в word или pdf можно, нажав на панели управления “Файл”, следом “Экспортировать в” и выбрать необходимый формат.
Пользоваться Pages можно как на Mac, так и на iPhone с iPad и даже на Windows ПК через сайт iCloud как Google Docs. Лично я полностью отказался от Microsoft Word в пользу Pages и ни капли не пожалел. Кроме того, Pages быстрее работает и занимает меньше места на Mac, что нельзя не записать в плюсы.
Программа для презентаций на Mac – какую выбрать
Созданы Keynote и PowerPoint для одного – реализация разная
Как и с первой парой программ, Keynote и PowerPoint имеют одинаковое назначение, но разную реализацию. Если вам необходимо создать красивую и, при этом, простую презентацию, лучше выбрать Keynote, так как приложение предлагает скромный, но красивый набор шрифтов и инструментов для вёрстки, тем самым “наколхозить” будет сложно. С PowerPoint же всё не так. Программа позволяет создать презентацию любой сложности и имеет гораздо большую галерею форм, символов и шрифтов, которые можно добавить, для большей эффектности. Зато интерфейс Keynote гибко настраивается – можно на своё усмотрение вывести на панель управления только необходимые инструменты.
Apple сильно отстает от конкурентов. Все дело в складном Айфоне
Keynote, в свою очередь, полноценно использует возможности экосистемы, позволяя показывать слайды на большом экране, отдельно выводя на iPad заметки докладчика. PowerPoint же просто дублирует изображения с планшета на экран. Keynote также поддерживает все популярные форматы файлов. Обе программы можно использовать на смарфоне, компьютере или планшете. Лично я сделал свой выбор в пользу Keynote, но тем, для кого презентация – серьёзный рабочий инструмент, я советую Microsoft PowerPoint.
Numbers и Excel – что лучше
Apple не создала удобное приложение для компаний, а сделала редактор таблиц для дома
Самое главное и важное различие между Numbers и Excel заключается в формулах. В Numbers их доступно около 250 для различных видов расчетов, включая статистические, финансовые и инженерные. В Excel же больше 60 000 формул. Excel также быстрее работает с большим количеством данных, в то время как Numbers часто может тормозить, при работе с большой таблицей. Хоть Numbers и Excel похожи по своему назначению – создание таблиц, программы созданы совершенно для разных сценариев. Если Excel создан для обслуживания компаний, которым необходимо анализировать большое количество данных, то Numbers подойдёт для домашнего использования, несерьёзных проектов или для учёбы.
Excel также используется для бухгалтерского учёта и для визуальной базовой кодировкой. Apple Numbers не даёт таких больших возможностей, но я остался на этой программе, так как не имею дело с большими и сложными таблицами. Профессионалам я, как и с PowerPoint, рекомендую ПО Microsoft.
Офисные приложения Apple — какие бывают
Microsoft Office включает в себя OneNote – программу для создания быстрых заметок и организации личной информации. Для таких целей у Apple есть штатные “Заметки” и “Напоминания”, но принцип работы приложений у двух компаний абсолютно разный. Все записи OneNote сохраняются как отдельный файл, который можно сохранить и отправить. Поделиться заметками от Apple можно только в виде ссылки, а эту ссылку могут открыть только владельцы яблочной продукции. Напоминаниями поделиться так вообще нельзя. OneNote больше подойдет для учёбы или совместного планирования. Мне же нужно было простое и удобное место, где я мог хранить свои небольшие записи, по этому здесь я также выбрал софт Apple.
У Microsoft совершенно другой подход к заметкам и напоминаниям
В целом, у компании из Купертино получилась хорошая альтернатива Microsoft Office, но далеко не полноценная. Можно, конечно, ещё сравнить Outlook и почтовый клиент Apple, но это совсем извращение, так как программы созданы абсолютно для разных задач. Самое привлекательное для меня стала цена. iWork бесплатный, а бессрочный минимальный пакет Microsoft Office стоит от 7000 рублей. Недостаток iWork – это возможность его комфортно использовать только на iPhone, iPad или Mac. Продукт Microsoft универсален, поддерживает устройства Apple, аппараты на Windows и Android, а таже подходит как профи, так и рядовым пользователям. Я же свой выбор сделал.

A Short Introduction to Numbers
