The word content is everywhere today, most frequently used to refer to information you find online. Content, as we are using it, refers to the information available online from a specific web page. For example, in order to find this article you performed a search query, likely typing a question such as ‘what is content’ into a search engine such as Google or Bing. What comes up when you click on a link is a web page, and that web page can contain a variety of content.

Most likely if you typed in a question you are hoping that when you click on a link the information contained in the web page will answer your question. You don’t want to waste your valuable time in a frustrating search for relevant information. Web content is provided in a variety of mediums, and the best content is targeted to provide the right information in a way that is best suited to those who are searching for it.

A web page can contain:

  • Text
  • Pictures
  • Video
  • Infographics – visual diagrams of a difficult or complicated concept such as this one from Content Marketing Institute
  • Podcasts
  • Interactive forms

All of the above are examples of content. A single web page can contain more than one of the above types of content, as well as menus with links to more specific content. The best web pages contain relevant and engaging content that achieves a goal for both the online searcher and the business or organization that created the content.

What Does the Word Content Mean?

The word content, like many words, has more than one meaning. Content is pronounced differently though spelled the same, depending on whether you use it as an adjective, verb or noun.

When you use content as an adjective, the emphasis is on the second syllable (content). Content used as an adjective describes a state of satisfaction, where nothing more is needed. You can also use it as a noun within the same context to describe a state of being, contentment. Contentment means the state of being satisfied with the way things are.

When you use it as a verb, it implies settling for a situation that is less than ideal, for instance:
She tried to be content with her present situation as she did not see a way to improve it.

Used as a noun, the emphasis is on the first syllable, content. Content can mean the amount of a substance contained in something else, like the amount of alcohol contained in a bottle of 80-proof vodka or the amount of fat in a serving of low-fat yogurt.

Content also refers to information. It can mean the information or ideas contained in a book, a magazine or a speech. Finally, it can mean the information in electronic media, such as a web page. We will focus on web page content, but it is easy to see that other definitions of content can and should come into play when planning a web page content strategy.

How Content used as an Adjective Should Describe People’s Reaction to Your Web Page

The main goal in planning a content strategy is for the people who click on your link to be content with the results they find on your web page. A good strategy will achieve this objective, only attracting those people to your page that are interested in what you have to offer, whether it’s information, a product or a service.

If people are looking for what you offer, well-planned content will help people to be content when they click on your link—they do not need to search any further because you have satisfied their need. Or, maybe they will click on other links but come back to your page because, after researching various options, they can see that you are the best!

How Content Used as a Verb Is a Wonderful Opportunity to Build Your Business

As described above, content used as a verb describes an action people take who are trying to be okay with a situation which is less than ideal. Consider this scenario: John was trying to find information about how much it would cost to install a fiberglass pool. It seemed like there were a zillion links advertising fiberglass pools, but no company offered info on cost. He decided that if nobody wanted to discuss cost it was probably out of his range. He didn’t want to have a sales rep visit his house; he wanted information on whether he could possibly afford it first before he went any further. He was hoping that he could get the pool installed for his kids while they were young enough to enjoy it. This was a big reason he didn’t want to have a sales rep out because he didn’t want to get his family’s hopes up if he couldn’t get the pool. He would have to content himself with taking the kids to the YMCA to swim for another summer.

Then somebody from a company called River Pools and Spas wrote an article about the costs of installing a fiberglass pool. The guy’s name was Marcus Sheridan. Marcus wrote an article that discussed what each option would cost and the total price. John could not afford it that year, but a couple of years later he was ready. John called River Pool and Spa because they were helpful and also their transparency regarding cost built trust. He’d read all the articles on their website and he was ready to buy.

The above story is fictional. But Marcus Sheridan is a real person. You may have heard of him. He saved his company from going under during the housing crisis in 2009. Marcus got the idea of answering people’s questions while thinking about how he felt when he was looking for info online that most companies are reluctant to give. Marcus decided that he had nothing to lose and a lot to gain by creating transparency and filling the information vacuum through answering customers’ questions on the company website. An article is successful if it solves a problem. Therefore, always remember:

You have already achieved one thing: You offer added value.

However, in order for your articles to be listed well on Google, at least the basic rules of search engine optimization (SEO) must be understood and implemented. For example, Google does not like texts that are too short. Many evaluations have shown that articles with significantly more than 1,000 words can be found more often at the top search engine positions.

Loosen up your text with paragraphs, pictures, videos or quotes. It is also very important to structure your text with headings and subheadings so that the individual sections are immediately recognizable. It is best to create this framework before you start writing.

For example, we’re talking about an ultimate guide to something. Like this article here is the ultimate post about content and content types.

But it can also be things you’ve dealt with yourself and/or figured out something on your own. Or even about original and original content, like very special tips that don’t exist anywhere else on the web. You will surely come up with a suitable topic. The work you put into it will certainly pay off. In the best case, people will drop everything later to read, share and link to the post. Epic posts grab attention and put your blog in the spotlight.

By the way, with posts like this, you should give special thought to the copywriting, how you present this form of content to your readers and prepare it for them. Instead of repeating yourself over and over again or referring to an external source, such as Wikipedia, each time, it’s better to make the effort to create your own reference and link to it.

Plus, people will then stay on your website, which is where you want them to be.

5. The Update Post

I definitely recommend:

  • You should basically update and improve everything you offer on a regular basis.
  • You should present these updates and improvements promptly in your blog and write about them.

This goes without saying for software, but other types of products as well as services need to be constantly refreshed and adapted to changing circumstances.

Customers expect that!

In return, they usually react very positively to any further development. Moreover, improvements, new properties and features arouse curiosity and increased interest. This is good for any business.

Regular updates about you and your product or service also build trust with potential customers. Plus, updates always generate additional content, which search engines love, after all.

You can use the guest post in two ways:

You can ask another site owner if you can publish an article with them. In doing so, you can usually include a link to your site.

Or you can invite someone else to publish an article on your site. Your profit is free content and the already mentioned networking.

Publication Frequency

How often should I publish an article?

You now know the 6 blog post types you should definitely write. – Next, the question becomes: how often should you write?

Daily is best!

More frequent publications usually lead to more traffic. From this, it can be concluded that as long as your content is worthy and brings something to the readers, you can’t actually post too much. Rather, it’s a matter of your resources and incurred costs. Researching and writing takes time, and you may not be writing yourself, but having someone write for you for a fee. You’ll have a harder time as a lone wolf than in a team, where the burdens are shared among several shoulders.

Incidentally, it’s a good idea to decouple writing and publishing a bit. Apart from update posts, which should understandably be posted in the immediate context of the update in question, it doesn’t hurt to have a few posts in reserve. While a regular publishing schedule is good for search engine rankings and readers – humans are creatures of habit – forcing yourself to write behind a schedule adds unnecessary stress, which usually has a negative impact on the quality of your posts. If possible, write when you have the time and peace to do so, and then publish as you go.

Adjust the frequency of your publication to your marketing strategy.

It’s all in the mix

Epic posts are tempting, not least because of their potential impact, but you’re easily put in danger of getting bogged down, bogged down, and overextending your resources. The time commitment here is comparatively high, your standards must be as well if you want to succeed with this form of content. So if you’re writing your posts yourself and don’t already have a certain amount of experience in this sort of thing, it’s best to avoid it for the time being and approach this task slowly. If you don’t have any problems with epic posts, we would like to advise you not to exceed an upper limit of 10% of the total blog.

Update posts should simply be as frequent as possible. – You can consider splitting the total text and dividing it into several posts. This obviously increases the frequency of publication and is especially useful if the update is more extensive and the readers might lose track of the text with so many new things. Without any further development, update posts naturally fall flat.

Brand posts are especially important at the beginning, when you are new with your business and no one knows you and your offer yet. Tell about yourself, post your story – it’s a great way to introduce yourself to the world and potential clientele and get known that way. Once you are through with the basics, the number of such posts will decrease as expected. After all, nothing changes what has already been said, and repetition is unnecessary. Still, don’t forget to check with each new post to see if you can usefully link to older posts, especially Personality posts.

Reference posts become more important once your blog has grown significantly in length, verbosity, and complexity. Most of the time you won’t write a reference on your own, but you may notice when publishing other content that such a post is appropriate in this context. And if you keep linking to the same external pages, it should really be time to put your own reference post online instead.

Conversion posts turn readers into customers – here’s your business, here’s where your business lies. You should aim to have at least half of your overall blog be value-added content that can pay for itself immediately through conversion.

I wouldn’t allowguest posts on a weekly basis right now. But that also depends a lot on the nature of your site and the topic. It’s best to let articles from other bloggers come to you naturally.

Use successful blogposts also for your email marketing. Even if you don’t have many visitors yet, it’s worth starting early.

What is a Word Web?

A word web is a graphic organizer that provides more information about a word.  Word webs can help children learn new vocabulary words and connect those words to other words that they already know.  This is a very effective tool for helping to boost vocabulary and language skills for all children, but especially those with language delays.

Word Web Example 1:
Single Word Web

One way to use a word web to expand a child’s vocabulary is to find new words and discuss them at length.  You can do this by creating a word web that maps out the new word.  Go through a book with the child that is at or slightly above his reading level.  Pick out a word from that book that the child doesn’t know the meaning of.  You could also do this with an assigned reading from school.  Chances are those words will come up again.  Draw the following word web on a piece of paper.  If desired, stick that paper in a page protector so that you can write on it with dry erase markers and use it again.

Word Web Example

Write the target word in the middle of the word web and then fill in the circles that surround it.  Use another piece of paper if you need more room.  Here’s what to put in each circle:

Part of Speech:

Include if it is a noun (person/place/thing), verb (action word), adjective (describes a noun), adverb (describes a verb), preposition (location word like on and in), conjunction (combining words like and/but), interjection (ah ha!  Or uh oh!).

Synonyms:

Identify words that mean the same thing as the target word.

Antonyms:

Identify words that mean the opposite of the target word.

Category:

If applicable, talk about what category the word belongs to.  If it is a noun, use categories like “foods” or “clothing”.

Word Parts and Meaning:

Break the word apart into as many pieces as you can that still have some sort of meaning.  For example, the words “balls” can be broken down into the root “ball” and the plural “s”.  “Ball” means the object and “s” means there is more than one.  For another example, “repositioning” could be broken down into “re” (again), “position” (movement or placing), and “ing” (currently happening).  On the other hand, “butterfly” cannot be broken down any further as it is its own thing.  If you broke it down into “butter” and “fly”, it would have a completely different meaning.  Talk about the parts of the word and what each one means.  This will help your child learn to decode other new words when he encounters them.

Function

If it is a noun, talk about the function of that object.  If it is a different part of speech, talk about what role the word has in the sentence.  For example, the conjunction brings two thoughts together.

Descriptors

For nouns, use the five senses to describe the word.  How does it feel, look, taste, sound, and smell?  For verbs, include what adverbs you could use to describe the action.  For the word run, you could use “quickly”, “slowly”, “staggeringly”, etc.

Other Info

Include any other information that you have about that word.

After creating this word web with a child, he will have a much better understanding of what that word means.  You could either erase these pages and start again (such as if you’re using dry erase markers), or put them together into a book for his own personal dictionary.

Word Web Example 2:
Vocabulary Web

If a child is struggling with vocabulary from a particular unit or theme at school, try creating a vocabulary word web for common words that the child might encounter.  Here’s what you can do.

Pick a unit or theme and find an age-appropriate text about that topic.  You can use the child’s textbook or find a book at the library.  Go through the text with the child and pick out 20-30 words that seem to be key vocabulary for that unit.  Many textbooks with include a list of key vocabulary at the beginning or end of the chapter.  Write all of those words on a piece of paper.

Next, look at the list with the child and see if you can find similar traits that would allow you to group the words into categories on your word web.  You could group them by part of speech (see the description above).  You could also group them by topic.  For example, words about The Earth may be grouped by land, water, and sky.

Once you have some groups in mind, create a word web that has the topic/unit in the middle in a circle.  Then create more circles for your groups and have those branching off the topic.  Finally, have each word in its own circle that branches off of one group.  Here’s an example to get you started:

Keep creating these word webs and the child’s vocabulary will grow like crazy!  You can even have your child decorate them and hang them where he can review them later.
