    It means talk to yourself, but figuratively. In other words, remind yourself or remember. Before you think only other swimmers drown, remember that you can drown too.

    Remind yourself that what happens to others could just as easily happen to you.

    It’s not an idiom — it’s a sentence that has been framed for this context.

    Here’s a short thread about the expression «have a word with»: Can I have a word with you in private?

    The gist is, to have a word with means to have a discussion, often a brief discussion. I have never seen «have a word with yourself.» I would have guessed it would mean have a discussion with yourself, but as others are saying, this author apparently wanted it to mean remind yourself. I don’t really approve of this usage.
