The good news is that the rules of wedding invitation etiquette aren’t that complicated. The primary tenets are actually much simpler and more straightforward than you think. And no matter the case, they’re there to serve as a guideline. The most important rule of all is that you create a beautiful wedding invitation that represents you, your love, and the big day to come—while also communicating the vital details of the wedding—so feel absolutely free to riff off these wedding invitation wording principles to create your own.

What to Include on Your Wedding Invitation
All wedding invitations should include the following elements:
- Who’s hosting
- The request to come to the wedding
- The names of the couple
- The date and time
- The location
- Reception information

Wedding Invitation Wording Line by Line
The Host
Traditionally, the bride’s parents are the hosts of the wedding and are named at the top of the invitation, even for very formal affairs. However, including the names of both sets of parents as hosts is a gracious option no matter who foots the bill. Also, more and more couples these days are hosting their own weddings, or do so together with their parents.
If it’s a collaborative affair hosted and paid for by the couple and both sets of parents, you can also use «Together with their parents, Emma and Jax request the pleasure of your company …»
If you want to include the name of a parent who is deceased, you’ll need to rearrange things a bit, as someone who has passed can’t actually serve as a host. Try this, for example:

and
Austin Mahoney, son of Mr. Camden and Elizabeth Mahoney,

If the couple’s parents are divorced and you want to include both as hosts, you can include them all, just keep each parent on a separate line. If you’re going to include the name of a stepparent, keep it on the same line as their partner. It might seem complex at first, but all it requires is a few more lines. The Request to Attend
There are many ways to ask for the pleasure of your guests’ company. Here are few options:
- «the pleasure of your company»
- «at the marriage of their children»
- «would love for you to join them»
- «invite you to celebrate with them»
- «honor of your presence»
The British spelling of «honour» traditionally indicates the ceremony will be held in a church or another house of worship.
The Names of Couple
If their names haven’t been included in the host line, they should still take center stage a few lines down. No one would forget to add this to a wedding invitation, of course, but you might be wondering whose name should go first on a wedding invitation? Traditionally the name of the bride always precedes the groom’s name. Formal invitations issued by the bride’s parents refer to her by her first and middle names, the groom by his full name and title; if the couple is hosting by themselves, their titles are optional.
For same-sex couples, the traditional rule of the woman first and man second isn’t applicable. Whether it’s «Emily and Zara» or «Zara and Emily,» it’s going to be lovely either way. When writing their own names, same-sex couples can choose to either go in alphabetical order or simply with what sounds better.
The Date and Time
For formal weddings, everything is written out in full (no numerals). The year is optional (the assumption being your wedding is on the nearest such date). Time of day is spelled out using «o’clock» or «half after five o’clock.» The use of a.m. or p.m. is optional. For casual weddings, numerals are fine.
The Location
The street address of a venue is not usually needed unless omitting it would lead to confusion or your wedding is taking place at the host’s home. The city and state should be written out in full in either case.
Reception Information
Very formal invitations include this information on a separate card. Otherwise, it can be printed on the wedding invitation itself if there is room; if the ceremony and reception are held in the same location, you may print «and afterward at the reception» or «reception immediately following.» When the reception is elsewhere, the location goes on a different line.
Include the time if the wedding reception is not immediately following the ceremony.
Dress Code
Wedding invitation etiquette dictates that the dress code—if you’re including it on the invitation—is in the lower right-hand corner of the invitation. If you don’t include a note on attire, the invitation itself will indicate the dress code. For example, if the invitation is very fancy, guests will likely be anticipating a formal, black-tie affair, or conversely, an invitation on the simpler side indicates a more casual dress code.
Separate RSVP Card
Most couples choose to include a separate response card for guests to fill out and return in the mail. You also have the option of having people RSVP via your wedding website. If that’s the case, include the website address on a separate card, just as you would with an RSVP card, and indicate that guests can let you know if they can come directly on the site.

Wedding invitation wording might not be as creative of a process to think about as paper designs, calligraphy and color schemes, but when it comes down to it, even the most unique wedding invitations need to be informative.
The text on your wedding invitations should give guests the details of your big day, all while offering a sneak peek of your wedding aesthetic and style as a couple. It should spell out all the essential wedding info—who’s getting married, who’s hosting, and where and when the ceremony and reception will take place. With all that in mind, you should still feel empowered to put your own spin on things, especially if your wedding style is more modern, relaxed or nontraditional. Be concise. It’s important that your guests have all the necessary information to attend your wedding, but overloading your invites with text can actually result in them missing something important. Clarity is key, so just give the essential details and leave the rest for your insert cards or wedding website.

Consider who’s hosting. Traditionally, wedding reception invitation wording includes the name of the person hosting (i.e. paying for) the wedding. Nowadays, this could be the couple themselves, loved ones (such as parents) or a combination of the two. It’s respectful to list anyone contributing to your big day on your invites, either by name or in the form of a short line, such as, «Together with their families.»

Reflect your wedding’s formality. How you word your wedding invitations is an indication of the overall formality of the occasion. If you want guests to wear black tie attire, opt for traditional wording. Or if you’d prefer to keep it casual on your wedding day, feel free to explore modern and playful wording examples. Choosing the appropriate type of wording is especially important if you don’t plan to explicitly state the dress code.

Include an insert card. There are certain pieces of information that don’t belong in a wedding invitation suite—most notably, your registry details. What to Put on Your Wedding Invitations
So what are wedding invitations supposed to say, exactly? Of course, you’ll want to include the date, time and location, but how do you word it? There’s a lot to consider when deciding on a wedding invitation format. To make things as easy as possible, we’ve broken it down for you into a few simple steps.

The host line. The opening line on a wedding invitation typically refers to the hosts of the event. As mentioned above, if multiple parties are hosting, it’s only necessary to include names if you want formal invitations. If the couple is hosting the wedding themselves, this line can be omitted.

The request to attend. An explicit request to attend lets guests know exactly what they are being invited to (cue the squeals of excitement). There are many different ways to word this request depending on the level of formality required. See our examples below for inspiration.

The couple’s names. Next comes the most important information of all: the names of the couple. These are usually printed in a larger font than the rest of the wedding invitation text. Feel free to play around with fancy typefaces here too.

The date and time. When stating the wedding date and time, there are two things to keep in mind: formality and clarity. Traditional wedding invitation wording requires the date and time format to be spelled out in full, while figures are often used on modern invites. If you’re using figures, make sure the font you choose is clearly legible—a «2» that’s easily mistaken for a «5» could cause a lot of confusion.

The venue location. Be as specific as possible when writing the name and full street address of your wedding venue, including the state and zip code. If your wedding is taking place abroad, include the country as well. It’s important that guests know exactly where they are expected to be so they don’t get lost and can organize travel and nearby accommodations if necessary.

The reception details. Finally, you need to let guests know whether or not the reception is taking place at the same location as the ceremony. If that’s the case, you can simply state, «Reception to follow.» If it’s in a different location, you can include that information on your invites or on a separate details card.

The dress code. Including dress code information isn’t compulsory, but it can be very helpful for guests (especially if your stationery doesn’t give an indication of the event’s formality already). You can state the dress code in the lower corner or centered at the bottom of the invite. Alternatively, use a details card or your wedding website.
Wedding Invitation Examples and Templates
Ready to dig into wedding invitation verbiage? A few basic wording tips before we get started: If one person’s parents are hosting, it’s customary to leave off that person’s last name. However, if the person getting married has a different last name than their parents, write their full name (including their middle name for formal invites). The person’s last name should also be included if their partner’s parents are involved in hosting.
Wedding Invitation Wording If One Set of Parents Is Hosting
In this case, the invitation includes one person’s parents’ names, so you can omit that person’s last name (unless they have a different last name than their parents). On the following line, write out the other person’s entire name. Same-sex couples or gender non-conforming folks should follow similar guidelines. The host of the wedding celebration (read: the people footing the bill) is listed first, followed by their child’s name, followed by their child’s partner’s name.

Feel free to add a line at the top stating that they’ve tied the knot, followed by a request to attend the reception.

Wedding reception invitations are made specially to inform your guests about the important details of the reception; venue and time, among other things. The wording for the invitations can be formal or informal, sometimes even humorous or out-of-the-box.
If you are hosting both the wedding and the reception at the same venue, then the wording may consist of a line added to the wedding invitation, stating that it will immediately follow the wedding. If however, the venue of the wedding and that of the reception are different, then a separate reception invitation card would need to be made accordingly. The wording should ideally be crisp, clear, and to-the-point, leaving no room open for doubt or befuddlement.
Some guests may have trouble finding the venue – if the place is hard to locate, providing a road map would be quite helpful, not to mention, thoughtful. Instead of getting lost on the way to the reception, guests will be able to easily make it on time, and not reach red-faced and frustrated. The little details count, so work it out accordingly. Also, be sure to get the timings right; you don’t want guests walking in too early, or too late.
