Learn about English sentence structures

There are four sentence structures in English: Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound-Complex. Here are examples of each:

  1. She ate lunch.  (Simple: one independent clause)
  2. She ate lunch, but she was still hungry. (Compound: two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction).
  3. She was still hungry even though she had eaten lunch. (Complex: an independent clause + a dependent clause)
  4. She was tired, and she was still hungry even though she had eaten lunch (Compound-Complex: two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction and one dependent clause)

First: Understanding Clauses

A clause is a group of words that includes a subject and a verb. It’s important to understand that there are two types of clauses:

Independent Clauses

A sentence must have at least one independent clause. An independent clause is a group of words that form a complete thought when you put them together. Here are some examples:

  • She ate lunch. 
  • The car drove on the road. 
  • On Tuesday, I had my test. 

These sentences are complete thoughts, which means that no more information is needed to understand them completely.

Dependent Clauses (Subordinate Clauses)

Dependent clauses are incomplete thoughts. They depend on an independent clause in order for the sentence to have meaning. Dependent clauses begin with a subordinate conjunction. Here are some examples:

  • when I got home (what happened?)
  • because the restaurant was closed (what happened because it was closed?)
  • whom I respect very much (whom are we talking about?)

Structure #1: Simple Sentences


A simple sentence is one independent clause. A clause is a group of words that contain a subject and a verb, and an independent clause it a group of words that form a complete thought when you put them together. Here are some examples:

Although the most commonly used coordinating conjunctions are but, and, so, and or, there are seven coordinating conjunctions in English:

  • F = for
  • A = and
  • N = nor
  • B = but
  • O = or
  • Y = yet
  • S = so

She ate lunch, but she was still hungry.
He sat down, and he read a book.
It was rainy, so we stayed inside.

The above sentences are all independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction, so they are all compound sentences.

Structure #3: Complex Sentences


A complex sentence has a dependent clause and an independent clause. The dependent clause can come at the beginning of the sentence or at the end. Here are some examples:

  • She fell asleep because she was tired.
  • Because she was tired, she fell asleep.
  • I’ll call you if I go.
  • If I go, I’ll call you.

(Note: When a dependent clause starts a sentence, you should put a comma at its end to show where the clause ends.)

An adjective clause (also known as a relative clause) is also considered a dependent clause as well. E.g.:

  • This is the store where I bought my hat.
  • Vancouver, which is in western Canada, is a beautiful city.

Structure #4: Compound-Complex


A compound-complex sentence has the following:

  1. two independent clauses joined a coordinating conjunction
  2. a dependent clause

The dependent clause can be anywhere in the sentence. Here are some examples:

  • She took out her umbrella because it was raining, and then she walked home.
  • I don’t like exercising, but I’ll do it if I have to.
  • The man who was on the other side of the street waved, so I looked at him.

Question: What about Compound-Compound? Complex-Complex?

Technically, you can make more complicated types of of sentence structures, for example:

  • She arrived and then he arrived and then I arrived so we were all there.

Is this Compound-Compound-Compound sentence? No. It’s still just called a Compound sentence. Also, it’s a badly written sentence.

  • Before she went home, she cleaned up the area where she had worked.

Is this a Complex-Complex sentence? No. It’s still called a complex sentence, even though there are two dependent clauses.

Why is all this important? What sentence structures should I use?

Spoken English tends to mainly use simple and compound sentences, but higher-level writing (e.g. academic and business communications) should use some complex structures. A complex sentence can be more efficient because it can contain several ideas in the same sentence. Also, using conjunctions such although or because helps the reader understand how ideas relate to each other, which makes your writing more cohesive

Complex sentence meaning

Complex sentences are longer sentences consisting of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. They are one of only two sentence types to include a dependent clause.

Clauses are the building blocks of sentences, and every clause must contain a subject and a verb. There are two types of clauses; independent clauses and dependent clauses.

An independent clause does not rely on any other clause to make sense; it is ‘independent’ and works on its own. On the other hand, a dependent (or subordinate) clause is ‘dependent’ on the independent clause to make sense. Dependent clauses add additional information to an existing sentence and cannot stand alone.

Complex sentence structure

A complex sentence contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses joined together with subordinating conjunctions, relative pronouns, and punctuation.

The independent clause can come at the beginning, in the middle, or even at the end of the sentence. Because of this, there is not a set formula for a complex sentence.

Remember: complex sentences can only have one independent clause but multiple dependent clauses.

We form complex sentences by centring the sentence around the independent clause (the main clause) and using dependent clauses to add additional information that expands on the main clause.

Dependent and independent clauses in complex sentences

Being able to correctly identify dependent and independent clauses is crucial when forming complex sentences. Although both clauses contain a subject and a verb, there is a difference between the two.

  • Independent clauses can stand alone as a complete thought.

  • Dependent clauses rely on the independent clause to complete the thought.

If the path is muddy — This is a dependent clause as it is an incomplete thought. If the path is muddy… then what?

You should walk on the road — This is an independent clause as it makes sense on its own.

If the path is muddy, you should walk on the road. — A complex sentence.

Another way we can identify dependent clauses is the use of subordinating clauses. As a general rule, dependent clauses will begin with a subordinating clause. Let’s look into this a little more…

Subordinating conjunctions in complex sentences

A subordinating clause is a linking word used to join a dependent clause to an independent clause. They are similar but differ from coordinating conjunctions, which join two independent clauses together.

Here is a list of subordinating conjunctions you can use to join a dependent and an independent clause;

  • if

  • because

  • since

  • until

  • although

  • even though

  • while

  • before

  • after

  • once

  • as

  • as if

  • so that

  • only if

Relative pronouns are a type of subordinating conjunction used to join clauses. Here is a list of the relative pronouns you can use;

Commas in compound sentences

Although complex sentences sound pretty ‘complex’, the only thing you have to worry about is choosing the correct subordinating conjunction and using a comma. But where does the comma go? I hear you ask. The position of the comma depends on the order of the clauses.

  • When the dependent clause comes first, place the comma just after and before the independent clause. E.g. ‘When I’m feeling sleepy, I like to watch Freinds on Netflix.’

  • When the independent clause comes first, there is no need to use a comma. E.g. I like to watch Freinds on Netflix when I’m feeling sleepy.’

Here are some examples of complex sentences. The independent clause is in bold, and the link is in purple.

  • When she was younger, she believed in Santa.

  • Although my friends begged me, I didn’t go to the party.

Conditional sentences beginning with the conjunction ‘if’ are among the most common types of complex sentences!

Let’s explore one of these examples in a little more detail so that you can get to grips with how complex sentences work:

When she was younger, she believed in Santa.

Here we can see that the dependent clause ‘when she was younger‘ begins with the subordinating conjunction ‘when‘. When to use complex sentences

Complex sentences are often used in spoken and written English because they give more information in a concise way. As complex sentences can include multiple dependent clauses, they can contain a lot of information.

He returned the parcel after he realised it was damaged.

In this sentence, the dependent clause adds more information to the independent clause ‘he returned the parcel’ by giving us the reason why the man is returning the parcel.

How to identify a complex sentence

Whenever we try to identify a particular type of sentence, we should look at the number and type of clauses the sentence contains.

In complex sentences, we are looking out for at least two clauses: one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.

Complex sentences are similar to compound sentences, as well as compound-complex sentences, but they are not the same. Let’s take a look at their differences.

  • Compound sentences don’t have dependent clauses. So, if you can see a dependent clause in a sentence, it is either a complex or compound-complex sentence.

  • Compound-complex sentences are often the longest sentence type. They include at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. If there is only one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses then it’s a complex sentence.

So, if there’s one independent clause and at least one dependent clause, you can be sure it’s a complex sentence!

What is Complex Object in English

Compound-complex sentences help us express longer more complicated thoughts, with more parts than other sentences. They’re good tools for explaining complicated ideas or describing long chains of events.

2. Examples of compound-complex sentences

Compound-complex sentences are surprisingly common. You probably see them a lot in books that you read for school, and even in books that you read for fun. Here are some examples to help you understand what makes a sentence a compound-complex sentence.

Example 1

Kate doesn’t like cartoons because they are loud, so she doesn’t watch them.

This sentence has two independent clauses and one dependent clause. The dependent clause “because they are loud” cannot stand on its own as a complete sentence; it is dependent. As you’ve probably figured out, the independent clauses “Kate doesn’t like cartoons” and “she doesn’t watch them” can be complete sentences on their own.

Example 2

The dog started barking so the cat ran away and I couldn’t keep up, so I stopped.

Now we’re dealing with more clauses, but they still follow the same rules. The independent clauses are complete sentences, while the dependent clause cannot stand on its own.

Both of these examples contain little words called conjunctions that link up the clauses. Read on to the next section to find out more about conjunctions and the other parts of a compound-complex sentence.

3. Parts of a Compound-Complex Sentence

If you know how to look for the separate parts of a complex-compound sentence, you can understand their structure more easily. We already know the basic rules: there must be at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. There are a few more things to know and then you’ll be ready to write beautiful and grammatically correct compound-complex sentences!

a. Independent Clause

An independent clause can always stand on its own as a complete sentence. That means it has a subject and a predicate. The subject will be a noun-phrase and the predicate will be a verb-phrase and describe the subject or what the subject is doing.

The independent clauses in a compound-complex sentence are called coordinate clauses. Because they are coordinated (by a coordinating conjunction) to work together on equal terms within the same sentence, such as in: “I came, I saw, and I conquered.”

Here are a few examples of independent clauses in compound-complex sentences, with the independent clauses highlighted in green. You can see that they’re related to each other, on more or less equal terms, that they can be complete sentences, and that they are put together using the coordinating conjunctions but and and, like some of the complex-compound sentence you are reading now:

  • Even though she was tired, Abby knew she had to finish the race and she ran to meet her team.
  • Usually I take a walk every day while the sun sets, but it was raining today.
  • She likes to sleep in but she can get up early if she has work.

The parts of these sentences that are not green are either dependent clauses or coordinating conjunctions. We’ll learn more about conjunctions soon, and dependent clauses even sooner!

b. Dependent Clause

The dependent clauses in compound-complex sentences will not be complete sentences on their own. They are dependent on the other clauses of the sentence, because they don’t fully make sense without them. Even though dependent clauses have a subject and a predicate like independent clauses, dependent clauses do not express a complete thought, usually because they are introduced by words like while, if, and because, that don’t make sense without some words that are not part of the dependent clause.

We’ll use the same examples from earlier to show you dependent clauses. In general, dependent clauses are a good way to add more information to any sentence.

Example 1

Even though she was tired, Abby knew she had to finish the race and she ran to meet her team.

In this sentence, the dependent clause “Even though she was tired” tells us why Abby was having trouble finishing the race. It doesn’t make sense without the independent clause it depends on. The clause is also introduced by “Even though,” which is a subordinating conjunction (you’ll learn about this in the next section). For now, let’s take a closer look at the second example sentence to see how dependent clauses give us more information.

Example 2

Usually I take a walk every day while the sun sets, but it was raining today.

As before, the independent clauses are green and the dependent clause is orange. If we take out “while the sun sets” we can see that it isn’t a complete sentence. But it does give us some interesting information about when I take walks! It answers the question of when, and it is introduced by the subordinating word “while.” Even though we could take out the whole phrase and still have a correct sentence, we would have less information and a less interesting sentence.

c. Conjunctions

Conjunctions are those little connecting words that can put different phrases and clauses together in to larger more complex sentences. In compound-complex sentences, we use conjunctions to string together most of our independent and dependent clauses. The most common conjunctions are and, or, and but.

There are different types of conjunctions that do different things, and there are more kinds of conjunctions than those covered here, but these are the important ones for compound-complex sentences.

Coordinating conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions connect independent clauses and other short phrases. There are seven coordinating conjunctions, and you can remember them using the acronym FANBOYS.

Simple enough, right? You’ll use the FANBOYS to connect two or more independent clauses in compound-complex sentences. Here’s an example from our earlier sentences.

Example 1

            She likes to sleep in but she can get up early if she has work.

We’ve got a big, purple but in there: that’s our conjunction! It links the two independent clauses in green so that we know they’re coordinate clauses and belong in the same sentence.

Subordinating conjunction

A subordinating conjunction introduces a dependent clause, so you can see how these would be useful in compound-complex sentences. There are a lot of subordinating conjunctions, but some common ones are if, while, and though. Let’s use the same example as above.

Example 1

            She likes to sleep in but she can get up early if she has work.

In this example our conjunction is if. It introduces the dependent clause if she has work and it is part of the clause too. It subordinates the clause making it dependent.  The point being that it establishes a relationship in which the meaning of the dependent clause depends on an independent clause, in this case, she can get up early.

4. How to Write Compound-Complex Sentences

So now you’re familiar with the parts of compound-complex sentences, and it’s time to start putting them together. This is as easy as coming up with two sentences and one extra bit of information, and then using conjunctions to link them all up. Let’s create a brand new sentence to show how they’re made.

Step 1: Independent clause

The first independent clause of your compound-complex sentence should have a strong main idea because it will remain one of the main points of your sentence no matter what you add to it. Let’s say I want to write a sentence about a cat. My independent clause might look like this:

The cat jumped onto the couch.

This is a complete sentence all on its own, which is how we know it’s a good independent clause for our complex-compound sentence.

Step 2: Related independent clause

Now we need another independent clause that is related to the first independent clause. Often this means that the two independent clauses will have the same subject, or share another word in common, but not necessarily; the second clause should either continue describing the action or add information of about equal importance with the first independent clause:

The cat sat down on top of the remote control.

This is another complete sentence which continues the action and is at least as important as the first independent clause. Now we’re ready for a dependent clause.

Step 3: Dependent clause

Our dependent clause will spice up the two independent clauses that we’ve already written. It could tell us more about the situation or explain an action, but it can’t be a complete sentence on its own. Here’s a dependent clause:

just when I was reaching for the remote control

Clearly, this is only part of a sentence. When we stick it in the right place and add the right conjunctions, it’ll make much more sense.

Step 4: Put it together with conjunctions

Let’s gather all of our clauses and decide on an order.

  • The cat jumped onto the couch.
  • The cat sat down on top of the remote control
  • just when I was reaching for the remote control

We can easily put this one together:

The cat jumped onto the couch and (the cat) sat down on top of the remote control just when I was reaching for it.

We might leave out the second the cat and replace the second remote control with it, because the sentence sounds repetitive otherwise, but it is grammatically correct either way.

And there it is: a compound-complex sentence! We have our two independent clauses, one dependent clause, and conjunctions that link everything together. When you’re out making your own compound-complex sentences, you can use more clauses than this as long as people can still follow the sentence.

That brings us to our next section about how to write the best compound-complex sentences you can.

5. How to Avoiding Run-on Sentences and Comma Splices

A run-on sentence has two or more independent clauses but doesn’t use the right punctuation or linking words to connect them. That means that even very short sentences can be run-ons. But you’ll be in more danger of run-ons when you write long compound-complex sentences, so keep a sharp eye out.

Example 1

The temperature has dropped, it’s windy outside, wear a jacket.

Even though these clauses are complete and related, they’re not coordinated; they need a coordinator! When independent clauses are connected only by a comma, it’s called a comma splice. There has to be a connecting word or different punctuation for this sentence to be correct. See the next examples for different ways to fix this sentence.

Example 2

The temperature has dropped and it’s windy outside, so wear a jacket.

Now we’ve got nice connecting words and no comma splice! The conjunction “and” connects the clauses and makes this a proper sentence. Meanwhile, the subordinating conjunction “so,” turns the clause “wear a jacket” into a dependent clause and clarifies the logic of the sentence.

Example 3

The temperature has dropped; it’s windy outside; wear a jacket.

We can use a semicolon to connect clauses without coordinating conjunctions and still avoid those evil, hateful comma splices.

As you can see from Example 3, it can seem a little awkward using the same strategy to fix every comma splice. Better would be: The temperature has dropped and its windy outside; wear a jacket.  In general, the art of composing long complicated sentences that are also clear and stylish is to vary your strategies for combining clauses.

Compound-complex sentences will seem less complicated as you get more practice with them, and then they become great tools for explaining complex ideas.

Knowing more about the different sentence types will also help you spice up your writing and show off your skills!

Introduction

One of the biggest mistakes students make in IELTS writing is to try and show off and be overly ambitious with their grammar. This is because many students think that all of their sentences need to be ‘complex’ (they don’t!), and them not understanding what a ‘complex’ sentence is. Trying to write overly complicated sentences leads to grammar mistakes, and this will lead to lost marks in many different areas.

This post will look at:

• how many ‘complex’ sentences do you actually need in each paragraph?
• what a ‘complex’ sentence actually is?
• how to make complex sentences?
• examples to help us understand and transfer this knowledge to our writing.

What does the examiner expect?

If we look at the examiners’ marking scheme it states that to get a band 6 for grammar, we need to:

• use a mix of simple and complex sentences.

For band 7, it states:

• Use a variety of complex structures.

This obviously means that we should use complex sentences in our writing, but it does not mean that we should try to make all of our sentences complex. All band 9 answers I have seen use a mixture of simple and complex sentences. The key is to know when to use them, and we will look at this below. But first, we need to understand what a complex sentence actually is.

What is a complex sentence?

The main problem here seems to be the word ‘complex’. Complex, in this situation, does not mean complicated, long or impressive. This is a common misconception and leads to students writing very long and grammatically incorrect sentences that are very difficult to understand.

For example:

‘In the modern world, global warming is one of the most popular topics causing many environmental difficulties and tough challenges arising from its serious consequences.’

This is a very typical sentence from an essay that is trying to be overly complex. This student has tried to put four simple ideas into one paragraph, resulting in an awkward and incoherent sentence. They have lost control of the grammar, and this affects the meaning. When meaning is affected, it stops the reading understanding of what is being said, and that isn’t good for your IELTS writing band scores.

‘Complex’ sentences are not very complex; they are just two or more simple sentences. Putting them together makes the essay more coherent and cohesive.

Let’s look at the first example again. In the sentence above, there are four simple ideas that we can put into simple sentences:

1. Global warming is a common topic these days.
2. Global warming causes environmental problems.
3. There are tough challenges associated with global warming.
4. Global warming has very serious consequences.

If we write all of our sentences in the IELTS exam like this, we lose marks because they are too simple. What we need to do is put them together to make complex sentences.

Complex Sentence Examples

For example:

One of the most common environmental issues is global warming which causes many serious environmental problems. Tough challenges are associated with this issue, and its effects have very serious consequences.

I don’t think there is anything ‘complex’ about these sentences, just simple ideas put together.

‘Complex’ is just a label, not a description.

I have taken each of the four simple sentences and put them together in two complex sentences. This result is a grammatically correct, easy-to-understand paragraph.

When should I use complex sentences?

Generally, we should use simple sentences when making main points, normally at the beginning of a paragraph. We should then use complex sentences when expanding on the main point, for instance, when giving a supporting example or explaining our main point.

Example:

This is a question about whether ‘fast food’ or ‘junk food’ should be taxed at a higher rate than normal food.

‘Increasing taxes would raise prices and lower consumption. Fast food companies would pass on these taxes to consumers in the form of higher prices, which would lead to people being unable to afford junk food. For instance, the cost of organic food has proven prohibitively expensive for most people. Despite this, people in many developed countries, where the problem is most acute, can afford price hikes and will continue to eat high-fat meals.’

The first sentence is the ‘topic sentence’ and makes the main point. It is, therefore, acceptable for this to be a simple sentence.

The second sentence explains the main point and uses the word ‘and’ to link two simple sentences together to make one complex sentence.

The third sentence gives an example and uses the linking phrase ‘for instance’. The final sentence makes a concession (shows the limitation of the argument) and is also a complex sentence, linking more than one idea together.

This paragraph has a mix of simple and complex sentences and therefore satisfies the marking criteria.

How do I make a complex sentence?

Remember that a complex sentence is more than one simple sentence to make one sentence. We, therefore, need to learn and become confident using the various grammatical structures that allow us to do that. Below are a few ways we can link ideas together in a sentence.

To make a complex sentence, we normally should have two things- a dependent clause and an independent clause. A clause is a group of words with both a subject and a verb.

An example of a dependent clause is ‘….because the weather was cold.’ This is a dependent clause because it has a subject and a verb but doesn’t make any sense. To make sense, we need to add an independent clause.

As the name suggests, an independent clause can make sense independently. For example, ‘I wore a warm coat.’ If we combine these two clauses, we get a complex sentence- ‘I wore a warm coat because the weather was cold.’

As you can see, ‘complex’ sentences don’t have to be complicated. Let’s now look at other ways we can make complex sentences.

1. Relative Clauses

You can use relative clauses to give essential or extra information about a person, place, or thing. This makes our writing more fluent and more coherent. We do this by using relative pronouns like who, which and that. For example, ‘He’s the kind of person who is always friendly.’

For example:

Air pollution can cause health problems. Air pollution is largely caused by motor vehicles.

We can convert these two simple sentences into one complex sentence by using the word ‘which’.

Air pollution, which is mostly caused by motor vehicles, can cause health problems.

For example:

There is evidence that some people are more likely to smoke. These people have parents and friends who smoke.

We can link both of these sentences together by using the word ‘who’.

Evidence shows that people with parents and friends who smoke are more likely to smoke.

2. Subordinate Clauses

A subordinate clause can describe nouns and pronouns; describe verbs, adverbs, and adjectives; or act as the subject or object of another clause. They connect an independent clause with a dependent clause with words like as, because, while, until, even though, although, when and if.

3. Conditional Clauses

Also known as ‘If clauses’, they are used to express that the action in the main clause can only take place if a certain condition is met.

For example:

If I had a million dollars, I would quit my job.

I will be really happy if I pass the IELTS test.

These clauses are good for giving examples in IELTS writing part 2.

For example:

‘Increasing taxes would raise prices and lower consumption. Fast food companies would pass on these taxes to consumers in the form of higher prices, which would lead to people being unable to afford junk food. If the cost of organic food proves prohibitively expensive for most people, they will not buy it. Despite this, people in many developed countries, where the problem is most acute, can afford price hikes and will continue to eat high-fat meals.’

They are also useful for discussing unreal situations or speculating about results in the past or present.

There are four different kinds of conditionals which I will outline below:

Zero Conditionals are used to talk about true information or facts. We can use if or when to introduce the conditional.

Example: Nowadays, when we travel long distances, we usually use air travel.

First conditionals are used to talk about things in the present or future.

Example: If the city’s population grows, we will need to build more infrastructure.

Second Conditionals are used to talk about impossible things.

Example: If the sun didn’t come up tomorrow, we wouldn’t have any life on earth.

Third Conditionals are used to speculate about past events. It is often used when we regret something or to imagine a past unreal situation.

Example: The Second World War would have never happened if Germany had been given a fairer peace settlement in World War One.

4. Compound Sentences

Compound sentences consist of two independent clauses linked together with a conjunction such as ‘and’, ‘for’ or ‘but’.

Examples:

I really want to study, but I’m too tired.
She got to the test centre early and did well on her IELTS test.

Some students think these sentences are too simple to count as complex, but they are wrong.

Warning

The crucial thing is to understand and be able to use these grammar structures before your IELTS test. Some students memorise many structures and try to insert them into their essays without considering how they work or if they are accurate. This will only lead to unnatural and incoherent sentences. Remember that your sentences must also be error-free, so only use structures you are confident using.

The key is to only use them appropriately. Concentrate on answering the question; if you know how to use these structures, they will flow naturally.
