The word having can be used in the following ways in English:

1. ‘Having’ as a main verb

One of the most common uses of having is to use it as a main verb. As a main verb, it means the following:

  1. Eat
  2. Drink
  3. Face/experience
  4. carry/keep
  5. Do
  6. Receive
  7. Causative verb

HAVING = eat

  • She is eating pasta.
  • She is having pasta.
  • I was eating dinner when you called.
  • I was having dinner when you called.

HAVING = drink

  • He was drinking soup in his room.
  • He was having soup in his room.
  • Aarushi was drinking vodka in the meeting.
  • Aarushi was having vodka in the meeting.

HAVING = face/experience

  • We are having a good time.
  • I was having some financial problems.
  • I am having fun.

The verb ‘having’ here means that the subject is experiencing or going through a particular situation.

HAVING = do

  • We did not have food with us.
  • I am not having cash on me.
  • He was having some bags.

Here, the verb ‘having’ means the subject is in the possession of something at the time of speaking.

HAVING = carry/keep

  • We are having a party tonight.
  • I am not having cash on me.
  • He was having some bags.

HAVING = receive

  • We are having some guests come over in the evening.
  • I am not having anyone to play chess with me tonight.
  • We will be having some people from her office.

NOTE: ‘having’ here does not literally mean to receive as you receive a gift or a delivery. If you are having some people over, they are coming to your place for something, usually for a meal like dinner or to drink, watch TV and enjoy.

HAVING as a causative verb

Have as a causative verb means to ask or instruct someone to do something.

Examples:

  • I have my sister clean my room.
  • We will have Jon contact you and help you with this project.
  • My father had me pick up some people from a station.

When the verb ‘have’ is in the continuous form, it indicates that someone is making someone do something, not by forcing though. But the action is going on.

Examples:

  • I am having Aarushi cut my hair. (= Aarushi is cutting my hair.)
  • We are having the car fixed. (= Someone is fixing our car, and we are watching over.)

2. Having as a gerund

Having can be used as a gerund in a gerund phrase. A gerund can render any of the meanings that it gives as a main verb.

Examples:

  • Having this party at his place can be risky. (do)
  • I enjoy having black coffee after workout. (drink)
  • Having a positive attitude is important. (keep)

3. In a perfect partriciple phrase

A perfect participle phrase indicates an action that occurred in the past. It is used to modify the main verb in the main clause.

Structure: having + past participle + object/modifier

Examples:

  • Having been fired from the job, she started looking for a new job.

Alternatives:

= After she got fired from the job, she started looking for a new job.
= she started looking for a new job after she got fired.

  • Having paid banned in most cities, the movie did not do well.

Alternative: The movie did not do well as it was banned in most cities.

4. HAVING to do something

The phrase ‘having to do something’ might sound odd to some ears. But it is used to refer to an activity that is going on for a limited time because of a requirement or a need.

Examples:

  • Because of the promise I made her, I am having to do all of this.

The action is in progress and will be stopped soon. We are using the progressive form as the speaker is doing the action. If it was a general requirement or obligation, we would use the verb ‘have’ there: I have to do all of this.

Here, the action is most probably not taking place, and it is a general requirement or obligation. You boss might have given this responsibility. It is a part of your job now. You will have to follow this instruction unless your boss asks you to stop doing this. But the continuous form indicates that the action is in progress and the action will be stopped soon.

  • His cook is not coming to work today. Therefore, he is having to prepare food for everyone in the family.
  • We are having to take extra classes today because of the absence of some staff.

We are having to take extra classes today because of the absence of some staff.
(The action is going on)

We have to take extra classes today because of the absence of some staff.
(The action is probably not going on)

5. HAVING said that…

This is a common phrase used to introduce something that contradicts what you have said earlier. It is a perfect participle phrase.

Meaning: despite what one just have said or in spite of that

Examples:

  • She is always calm and composed. Having said that, she got furious when I called her doodoo.
  • The exam is going to be tougher this time. But having said that, you can still get good grades.
  • Your performance has been remarkable. Having said that, we still think you can get better in some areas.
  • He hasn’t been doing well lately. Having said that, I think he still can be a great asset to our team.
  • This car is extremely expensive. Having said that, I would love to buy it some day.

NOTE: we can also use the phrases ‘that being said’ and ‘that said’ to mean the same.

Let me try this way… I split your sentence into two parts:
The customer has left.
The criminal takes out a pin from his purse…
The first sentence needs to be in present perfect tense because its effects prevail when the second sentence happens. When we join the sentences into one, we therefore have to use the present perfect participle form of ‘has left’, which makes it ‘having left’.

This use of ‘having’ is just the tip of the iceberg though. There are many other ways in which it is used. I am only being specific to the example you have given.

Having when used with past participle here means that process is done. That’s one of the uses of the word ‘have’. It simply means ‘have something done’.

23) Have — (used with a past participle) have something done to cause something to be done for you by somebody else.

Note that here, leaving of that premises causes something to happen (stealing the PIN probably).

Here, it means that once the customer left, some action is triggered.

Having something done is different from using the word ‘having’ in normal context. Having shows possession/having something whereas ‘Having something done’ means what I describe from the dictionary.

d) I am having sex — You are (currently) indulged in sexual activity

Students in our English classes often get very confused by the use of “being” and “having” as gerunds. They know that adding –ing to a verb changes it into a gerund. They also know that a gerund acts like a noun and can be a subject, object, or complement of a sentence.

Example: Studying English

  • Studying English is important.    [studying English = subject]
  • I like studying English.   [studying English = object]
  • I think a lot about studying English.   [studying English = object of preposition]
  • My favorite thing to do is studying English.   [studying English = complement]

However, when we use the gerund “being” plus an adjective, a preposition, or a noun, we are talking about that experience or condition.

What does it mean to say: “Being shy makes life difficult” or “I hate being shy”?

In the above case, the experience or condition of being shy makes life difficult. I hate the experience or condition of being shy.

Here are more examples using “being” with an adjective, a preposition, and a noun:

  • Being stuck in between two people is uncomfortable.   [Being + adjective]
  • Being on an airplane is uncomfortable.   [Being + prepositional phrase]
  • Being an airline passenger is uncomfortable.   [Being + noun]

In each of these cases, the person is complaining about the experience or condition.

If you want to make the situation negative. just add “not” in front of the gerund:

  • Not being comfortable makes the trip feel longer.   [Not + Being + adjective]
  • I am happy not being on an airplane.   [Not + Being + prepositional phrase]
  • Not being an airline passenger is better for me. I prefer to drive.   [Not + Being + noun]

Now you try: Finish each statement with an adjective, a prepositional phrase, and a noun that describes this person’s situation.

Let’s look at the same grammar point using the gerund “having.”

Just like “being,” “having” can act as the subject or object in a sentence. Having is always followed by a noun phrase. We have something.

Again, we are talking about this situation or condition of having a big house.

To make it negative, just add “not” in front of the gerund.

  • Not having servants would be difficult if your house were so big!

Here is another example:

  • Having too much work stresses him out.
  • He hates having too much work.
  • Not having too much work would make him so much happier!

What does he have? Too much work. This condition makes him feel stress. He hates this condition.

Now you try. Describe the person’s condition using the gerund “having”. What does the person have?

What’s the difference between being and having?

Both “being” and “having” can be used in the gerund form as a noun in the sentence. In this case, they will not follow a helping verb form of “be”.

Being a student is a lot of fun but hard work.

She talked about having a job in a big city.

The main difference between “being” and “having” as a noun is that “being” expresses a state or experience.

Being angry doesn’t help anything.

She likes being alone on the weekends.

“Having” expresses the idea that you posses something.

Having good friends is important in life.

So, look for examples of ‘being’ and ‘having’ as gerunds in the real world!

You would say «I have a headache» rather than «I am having a headache.» It’s the same with any health problems:
«I have a sore throat.»
«I have a broken nose.»
«I have a cold.»
«I have a bad cough.»

The second sentence is fine though.

But if you interpret «having» in the sense of «experiencing» in this sentence i.e. «I am having(experiencing) a headache now.»
Would it then be correct?

Not for a headache, no. It’s always «I have a headache.» You’re right that stuff you’re experiencing would usually be the ing form («I’m having a heart attack»), whereas states you’re in would be the basic form. But things like headaches, colds, flu, injuries, etc, come in the states category, rather than the experiences category.

Indian speakers of English often use the -ing form, even with verbs that don’t actually have a Present Continuous form. Sounds great!

‘I am knowing that.’ Is this a direct translation from Hindi into English?

In Singapore, India and many other locations I’ve been to, «I’m having a headache» is very common, and correct. It sounds a bit odd here in Toronto, but my wife says it all the time.

Hello dear readers of my blog. In this article, I will tell you how to learn English words correctly and effectively. I have been using this method for several years now, because it helps me learn expressions quickly and easily. It really works with me, allows me to read a lot and learn by reading in English. Most importantly, I have tested this method on my students.

When we learn a foreign language, we all the time think of this process as «learning», that is, as something that makes us tense. I propose to diversify this process a bit by using reading books, news or topics so that you read what you are interested in. Then it will be perceived as a rest, it will help to memorize English words forever and without cramming. 

How does reading help you learn English words?

Reading texts, books, articles helps to repeat and practice already learned phrases. Thus, you fix them in your memory, learn according to the context correctly, for memorization. And this helps them not only to begin to understand, but to use them in their speech.

Most importantly, it expands your vocabulary and improves your pronunciation of words when read aloud. Additionally, while reading books, you also repeat grammar, develop the skill of understanding the text in English without translating it in your mind. This skill is called Reading Comprehesion.

A similar method is used by the hero of Benedict Cumberbatch in the TV series Sherlock. It is called the Palace of Memory or Halls of Mind, and does not even require the use of stickers. This is a completely scientific method of memorization based on visualization.

You imagine a well-known place — a long street, building, or store, and for each item or location you assign a piece of information that you want to remember. In our case, this is some kind of English word.

When you need to remember a word again, it’s like you go for a walk around this place, and you find an object that you associated with the word. How well to memorize English words? It is the Halls of Mind that are used by the participants of the competitions from memory.

This way you can memorize large amounts of information.

You can use the Leitner system. You write a list of words you want to memorize, each word on a separate sheet, with a translation on the back. Then you work with it in a convenient way — you learn by heart, stick stickers, take an application or go to the palaces of the mind. You check your memorization in the following way — you take sheets with words, read the version in your native language and translate.

If it works, you send the word into a separate pile, which you will use in 4 days. If it didn’t work out, the word remains in the same pile, and tomorrow you will work with it again, as you do every day. When the fourth day comes, you take both shots and repeat the procedure. And you continue to work on the same system further, moving words from pile to pile.

The method consists in repeating foreign words at different intervals depending on the result of the reproduction of the word from memory.

Eagle is consonant with the Russian «igla». We need to come up with a connection between an eagle and a needle. Imagine an eagle with medical needles instead of claws — this will be our association.

Sometimes there are flashcards that cause special difficulties that you cannot translate with confidence even after 10 repetitions. Always carry several stacks of cards with you, then you won’t have to spend your free time on repetition at all. You will repeat the stack, standing in line or in transport on the way to work — you can use every minute of waiting to your advantage.

We learn English words in order — take a dictionary and start learning along the way. On the one hand, it is boring, on the other hand, words of different complexity are memorized by many easier. This means that this direction is well developed for you, and you can memorize many words without any problems from the very first lessons. If not, then after a few weeks you will reach the desired level and can easily memorize a large number of words in one lesson;
  • 90% of those who started using this technique reported that after the first week of classes they memorize about 100-300 words (the indicator is individual and largely depends on the initial skills).

How to study Mnemonics:

  1. The visuals are good, but they are not suitable for this direction. Turn on the image and draw a picture in the head. For example, we learn the word sun. We close our eyes (if it doesn’t work with open eyes) and imagine a bright sun on a clear day. Not the street, but the sun, we «look» at it repeating the word and reading the letters;
  2. If the first rule isn’t working hard, try the second. Association with absurdity. We are looking for a suitable word in Russian, for example, for English fist so Russian begs pistachio… Now imagine a pistachio in a fist and say the word fist. Now it will definitely pop up in consciousness as the most vivid memory from a sound or a set of letters fist. But here it is important not to confuse that the word fist is a fist, not a pistachio;
  3. The plot associated with the picture. Another bright direction of abstraction. Introducing a giant crane lifting a giant fish and repeating fish;
  4. It is important to put your eyes correctly. For each word, you repeat 4-5 times and set your eyes in this way: slightly lifting and pointing at the bridge of the nose. According to scientists, in this position of the eyes, the neutrons of the visual part of the brain are most active;
  5. Learn to remember with open eyes, this is important, since memories come depending on whether you kept your eyes initially closed or open (to remember, you need to return your eyes to the same position);

What Are “Has” and “Have”?

“Has” and “have” are both verbs.

Verbs are used to indicate action. Along with nouns, adjectives, pronouns and prepositions, they’re one of the basic parts of speech in English.

“Has” and “Have” to Mean Possession

When we talk about possessing (owning) something, we use the verb “to have.”

“To have” is the infinitive, or original, form of the verb.

Here are some conjugations of the verb “to have”:

Present progressive is / are having
Past had

“Has” and “have” are both conjugations in the English present tense.

For example, look at the following sentences:

She has the book.

I have the book.

In both sentences, the verb “to have” is conjugated in the present tense.

“Has” and “Have” as Auxiliary Verbs

The verb “to have” has another use. It’s also an auxiliary verb.

An auxiliary verb is combined with another verb to complete the meaning of a sentence. Because of this, it’s also called a helping verb. For example:

She has eaten dinner already.

I have seen that movie.

These sentences both use the perfect tense. Here, “has” and “have” don’t indicate possession. Instead, adding “has” or “have” to another verb creates that verb’s perfect tense form. 

In general, the verb “to have” is important as an auxiliary verb because it creates the past perfect and present perfect tenses for other verbs. 

“Has” vs. “Have”: What’s the Difference? 

Really, the difference between “has” and “have” is all about English points of view:

Points of View in English

In English, anything we read or speak is coming from a particular point of view. The point of view tells you who is speaking, and who is being spoken about.

You can know the point of view by looking at which pronouns are used. Let’s quickly review:

Got it? Great! Now that you understand points of view, using “has” and “have” becomes very easy.

“Has” vs. “Have” in the Present Tense 

“Has” and “have” can both be used in the present tense as a main verb to mean possession.

Here’s the difference:

Using “Has” in the Present Tense

There are two points you have to remember: 

1. In the present tense, “has” is used with the third-person singular point of view.

That means you’ll use it with “he,” “she,” “it,” a name or a singular noun. 

It’s also used with singular pronouns like “everybody,” “anybody,” or “nobody”:

Everybody has a copy of the book.

Nobody has the answer.

I don’t think anybody has coffee.

2. “Has” is only used with affirmative (non-negative) statements. 

If you’re asking a question or if you’re talking in the negative (using the word “not”), you won’t use “has.”

He has brown eyes.

She has the answer to your question.

That book has 400 pages.

Japan has amazing food.

Meena has 45 pencils.

Using “Have” in the Present Tense

1. In the present tense, use “have” in the first- and second-person points of view, and in the third-person plural point of view.

In other words, use “have” with the subjects “I,” “you,” “we” or “they”:

I have a headache.

You have a new laptop.

They have three cats.

We have a big house.

Also, use “have” with plural nouns or when talking about multiple people or things at the same time:

Those dresses have stripes.

Roger and I have a red car.

My dog and Patricia’s cat have brown fur.

2. If you’re asking a question or making a negative statement, then always use “have,” regardless of the point of view.

Here are some questions in the present tense, all using “have”: 

Does anybody have the answer to the question?

Do you have the book?

Does she have a house?

Does Meena have a best friend?

Do I have your attention?

The same is true for negative statements in the present tense:

She does not have a room.

I do not have a brother.

They do not have time to see you.

The movie does not have a good plot.

We do not have a dog.

To repeat: with a negative statement or a question, use “have” even if the subject is “he,” “she,” “it,” a name or a singular noun.

“Has” vs. “Have” in the Present Perfect Tense 

“Has” and “have” can also be auxiliary verbs that help create the present perfect tense, in combination with other verbs. 

The rules for using them as auxiliary verbs are actually simpler. It just depends on the subject:

Pronoun He, she, it I, you, we, they
Noun Singular Plural

Using “Has” in the Present Perfect Tense

Whatever kind of statement you’re making, whether it’s an affirmative or negative statement or even a question, you’ll use “has” as long as the subject is third-person singular: “he,” “she,” “it,” a name or a singular noun.

John has gone to California four times. (Affirmative statement)

The dog has not eaten today. (Negative statement)

Has she received the letter? (Question)

Has he not told you about this? (Question)

Using “Have” in the Present Perfect Tense

Similarly, with “have,” you use it in the present perfect tense with subjects “I,” “you,” “we” or “they,” as well as plural nouns.

I have watched “Game of Thrones” four times.

You have helped me a lot.

They have asked many questions.

We have thought about this all day.

This is true for any kind of statement or question too:

My friends have not watched “Game of Thrones.” (Negative statement)

You have not helped me at all. (Negative statement)

Have they asked too many questions? (Question)

Have we thought about this enough? (Question)
