Sekki

Expand

Sekki (a Touhou LW original) refers to auroras as they were referred to in old literature. An aurora’s rarity and flickering red waves are similar to Flandre. Perhaps because of her non-Eastern origins (or maybe just because of her transcendental way of thinking), Flandre’s temperament deviates from the usual laws of Phases and Essences.

She is weak against Sun Essence with its governance of day, Water Phase with its barrier properties against vampires, and Wood Phase with its legendary use in defeating vampires.

She is strong against Moon Essence and Star Essence with their governance of night as well as Metal Phase with its position as a symbol of universality.

Flandre Scarlet’s Spell Card. She traps her target within a ring of bullets, only to shoot more bullets at them. Perhaps it overlaps with Flandre’s own situation of having been in the same room for 495 years. Incidentally, this attack has the danger of becoming impossible to control, which might be why it is taboo.

Character Ability

Capable of destroying absolutely anything

Expand

An incredibly threatening ability, as the name suggests. Flandre once used this ability with Remilia to destroy a meteorite aimed at the Scarlet Devil Mansion. The range of the ability, how it destroys, and the cost for using this ability is not clear, but apparently, every object has something called an «eye» which is where its tension is highest. By moving this eye into her hand and squeezing it, Flandre is able to destroy the object the eye belongs to. Just hearing about this ability is enough to make anyone’s chest feel tight.

Immune to Barrier Status: Blind. When attacked with Blind, Spirit Power 0.20 UP.

When using Boost, own Yin ATK 1 level UP (1 turn).

Character Analysis

Flandre Scarlet was released on June 4th, 2021 in Waltz of Madness.

The Sister of the Scarlet Devil, Flandre Scarlet is a vampire with a dreadfully powerful ability and nearly no self control. It’s for these reasons that she often remains within the Scarlet Devil Mansion, rarely going out as she might wreak devastation without being careful. This lack of self control combined with her ability to destroy absolutely everything makes for a flawed, but potent B Tier Friend

For farming, Flandre is completely unsuited. Whilst her Solo Last Word can do some serious damage, even at 1 Power, its base 50% Accuracy means she can’t hit 100% Accuracy, even with a Story Card that provides 3 Levels of Accuracy Up — the highest a Story Card can provide. This introduces enough variance that she will occasionally fail to clear a stage by herself, although this factor can be mitigated if you provide her with a teammate to support her.

For challenge quests, Flandre requires a lot of support to outperform other attackers, and her Solo targeting Last Word does make her usually outclassed by All attackers. Due to the unusually inaccurate nature of her Last Word, she cannot hit 100% Accuracy even with 10 Levels of Accuracy Up/Evasion Down — which is the cap of Accuracy buffs. She will require Paralyze Barriers to be applied on her target to be fully accurate, which means she will never be 100% accurate against a target under Full Break, as you cannot apply Paralyze Barriers if there are no Barriers to Paralyze. She also provides almost no Break support, — of her attacks, she’s only able to hit 1 Fire Break with her second Spell Card at 0 Power, and 1 more at 3 Power.

With that said, she can still put in some serious work, and especially shines in fights with 1 or 2 priority targets, being able to annihilate one with her Last Word and apply 3 Levels of Yin DEF Down on another. Her Last Word is so devastating in fact, that even making it fully accurate alone will make it deal over four times what the likes of Yuyuko can do — if you also provide her with Crit Accuracy and Damage support, she can deal millions of damage, shattering the visual damage cap. Usually hilariously overkill, but there are occasionally fights that justify that sheer amount of damage.

Overall, Flandre requires a lot of support, she’s a smidge situational even then, and she’s never going to be a good choice for solo farming, but for harder fights nobody can match her sheer damage output against a single target. She really can destroy absolutely anything.

Story Card Recommendations

(Card recommendations last updated on October 31, 2022)

Spell Card

Due to her extreme hunger for Accuracy, on top of needing 3 Power to fully utilize her Last Word, Flandre wants at least one Spirit Power UP card, and a card that provides 3 Levels of ACC UP for 2 turns. If you can provide her enough Accuracy otherwise that she doesn’t need it from her Story Cards, look for YIN ATK UP cards instead. Unlike many other characters, you’ll probably never use stat sticks on Flandre, as she always needs time to set up, but if you have a free slot look to Story Cards that boost YIN ATK.

Last Word

When it comes to Flandre’s Last Word, you have two options, depending on what kind of support you provide her. You can opt to using her best in slot card, which is Unknown Barrier Team if you are able to successfully provide her with enough accuracy support. If you do not have this card, you can use YIN ATK UP cards such as Overwhelming Firepower instead.

With the amount of Friends present in the game right now, getting enough Accuracy support from the team through their skills has been easier. However, if you have limited amounts of Friends that can provide this, a story card that gives 3 ACC UP, such as Valued Tools of the Trade at max limit break, will be your best bet.

Character Strengths

+ Devastatingly powerful Solo Last Word — at max potential.
+ Reasonably solid team support for Yin attackers with 3 Yin DEF Down against a single target.

Character Weaknesses

— Due to unusually low accuracy, she requires heavy accuracy support.
— Requires 3 Power for maximum potential.
— Unusually poor access to elements, having only 1 Fire Break on one Spell Card at 0 Power and 2 Fire Breaks at 3 Power.

Latest Content

Lady Flandre Scarlet is the younger of the Scarlet sisters and an inhabitant of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. She is not currently obtainable as a party member, but can be both battled as an enemy and played as a temporary unit. She will temporarily become avaliable between the 4th and 11th of June, as part of an event-based prayer called Waltz of Madness; it is unknown when she will return as a standard obtainable unit.

Flandre is very childish, and has the mental age of a young girl. She is often petulant, but is just as quick to snap back to eagerness and playful intent. She is very enthusiastic about battling and games, often laughing loudly as she goes about her business. Unfortunately, Flandre has all the enhanced strength of a vampire, as well as the ability to crush anything she wishes, causing her to be exceedingly dangerous to go up against, even in a «game». While generally helpful and sweet, Flandre also has moments of instability in which a maniacal or sadistic side slips out, manifesting in a wild cackle and powerful, sometimes uncontrollable attacks. Flandre is very close to her sister, Remilia, and also enjoys the company of her head maid, Sakuya. She also appears to enjoy teasing Meiling.

Description[]

Flandre is a vampire girl from the West, though she currently resides in Gensokyo. She has shoulder-length blonde hair and scarlet eyes, and is rather slight, being built comparably to a fairy. She possesses a pair of wings on her back. These are composed of what appears to be dark reddish-brown bone across the top, with the bulk of the wing structure made up of eight crystals that move through the following colours: icy-blue, cobalt blue, violet, orchid-purple, orange, sunshine yellow, bright green, and aquamarine. Although Flandre’s eyes are by default drawn with the same deep gradient as the other characters, when using her powers, they begin to glow scarlet, causing them to become almost completely bright red as her pupils constrict into lines and the shadows vanish from her eyes.

In her base costume, Flandre’s attire is oddly reminiscent of Reimu’s, with the same red-and-white colour scheme with yellow/gold accents. She wears a red bodice with white collar and puffed white elbow-length sleeves, and gold trim along the bottom hemline. A yellow scarf is tied beneath the collar. This is connected to a red skirt with white underskirts by a white sash, tied with a bow at the left hip. Her red skirt also has gold accents along the edge. She also wears a white cap with red accents on the edge of the brim, and an reverse-colour-scheme scarf. Her bangs fall across her forehead and are gently swept to the left, and she has a waist-length portion of hair tied back and let fly at the back of her head. Notably, the sash around her waist features trailing ends that become tattered and stained with what is presumably dried blood. The few highlights on her portrait are a bright shade of turquoise.

In her maid outfit, Flandre’s attire changes from red-and-white to hot pink-and-white, with a two-button polo collar rather than an ornamental ruffled one. She also wears an apron with two gold buttons that covers the front of the bodice down to the skirt, and wears white button-up cuffs on her wrists and a small, thin, orange-and-yellow striped pussycat bow. It is far less of a deviation from normal attire than any of the other maid outfits, possibly because Flandre is a lady of the house, as well as a small child playing a game and not an actual maid.

Battle[]

Flandre is a destroyer unit. Her passives and status effects are focused almost solely on increasing attack power, sometimes at the cost of Flandre’s own health or participation in battle. Her temperament is Sekki, and her attacks are either null-element or Fire.

Shots[]

Flandre’s Spread Shot, E. M. Spectrum, consists of a base 5 Yin attacks at power 5.25 and accuracy 60%. Unfortunately, these stats don’t get much better, with a single Boost yielding 2 Yang attacks at power 3.93, a second adding 2 Yang attacks at power 4.25 and 2 Yin attacks at power 4.58, and a third adding 2 Yang attacks at power 4.91 and 2 Yin attacks at power 3.60. Her accuracy also plateaus out at 75% across all extra Boost shots. However, Flandre has an unusually high critical rate, at 20% unboosted, and 10% for all Boosted attacks but for the last, which has a full 60% critical rate.

Flandre’s Focus Shot, Sephirothic Fruit, consists of a base 2 Yin attacks at power 14.58 and accuracy 60%. Boosting once adds a single Yin bullet with power 8.73, Boosting twice adds 2 Yang bullets at powers 9.45 and 10.18, and Boosting a third time adds 1 Yin bullet at power 10.91 and 1 Yang bullet at Power 4.00. The critical rates and accuracies are laid out the same as in her Spread Shot.

Spell Cards[]

Flandre’s first Spell Card, Taboo: Kagome, Kagome, has a base 10 Yin attacks of power 8.40 and accuracy 60%. Boosting once adds 2 Yang bullets of power 12.57, a second time adds 2 Yang bullets of power 13.61 and 2 Yin bullets of 16.80, and a third adds 4 Yin bullets split half-half at powers 15.71 and 19.20. The accuracy and critical stats are as above, apart from the final shot, which, instead of being 75%/60%, instead mimics the initial 60%/20% configuration. This Spell Card is listed as having a Firepower of 83, and also imparts Flandre with +1 Yin ATK and +1 Yin DEF for 3 turns.

Flandre’s second Spell Card, Taboo: Lavateinn, has a base 6 Yin-Fire attacks of power 8.15. Boosting once provides 1 Yang attack of power 16.76, twice adds 1 Yin attack of power 18.15 and 1 Yang attack of power 19.55, and thrice adds 1 Yang attack of power 20.95 and 1 Yin-Fire attack of power 27.93. Accuracy and Critical Chance stay stable at 75%/10%, apart for the final attack, which only has an accuracy of 60%. This Spell Card is listed as having a Firepower of 56.

Flandre’s Last Word is called Closing Schwarzschild Radius. This attack has a Max Boosted Firepower of 599.

Abilities, Skills, and Passives[]

Flandre is capable of destroying absolutely anything, granting her immunity to the Blind status effect. When attacked by this, her Spirit Power increases by 0.20, and when using Boost, her Yin ATK increases by 1 level for the turn.

Flandre’s Frenzied Eyes skill drops the target’s Yin DEF by 1 level for 3 turns, with an additional +1 to the effect 30% of the time. Her Innocent Rampage skill increases her CRIT ATK by 2 levels for 2 turns, though it drops her Yin DEF by 2 levels for the turn, with an additional +1 to the effect 80% of the time. Her Vital Check skill increases her CRIT Accuracy by 2 levels for 2 turns, but drops her Yang DEF by 2 levels for the turn, with an addition +1 to the effect 80% of the time.

Flandre’s Destructive Impulse passive has a 50% chance of dropping the target’s Crit DEF by 1 level for 3 turns each time a wave starts. Her Devil’s Little Sister passive causes her CRIT ATK to have a 25% chance of increasing by 1 level for 3 turns whenever she is attacked. Her Magical Girl Nature passive causes her CRIT Accuracy to have a 15% chance of increasing by 1 level for 3 turns whenever she is attacked.

Flandre’s Switch Effect is Power Link.

Flavour Text[]

When introducing herself:

«Were you looking for me? I’m Flandre! The vampire named Flandre Scarlet. Are you my new toy?»

When attacking with Taboo: Kagome, Kagome:

«Kagome, kagome… who’s standing… behind you?»

When attacking with Taboo: Laevatienn:

«I don’t care if you burn right up! KYAHAHAHAHA!»

Trivia[]

  • Both her main Shots are Touhou Lost Word originals.
  • According to the description, E.M. Spectrum was created by Flandre so she could play with the fairies at the lake, and is based on Starbow Break. She came up with the name after Sanae commented that it looked like an electromagnetic specter.
  • According to the description, Sephirothic Fruit was created by Flandre so she could battle with Marisa and the other characters. Patchouli, who had been supervising her, suggested that Flandre use the name of the tree of life, since the shot was based off the Forbidden fruit.
  • Flandre’s Taboo: Kagome, Kagome Spell Card is speculated to mimic Flandre’s own situation with being stuck in the basement for 495 years.
  • Flandre’s Taboo: Laevateinn Spell Card is named after a weapon appended to the Poetic Edda, created by Loki. The card is apparently a counterpart to Remilia’s Gungnir, and its Yang attacks are supposedly «…effective against older sisterly presences.»
  • Flandre’s Closing Schwarzschild Radius Spell Card is named after the size an object must be crushed to in order to become a black hole, possibly referencing her ability to find the eye of any object and destroy it.
  • As of Touhou Lost Word’s original continuity, Flandre appears to be free to wander around the mansion, although Sakuya has to keep an eye on her. She enjoys chasing the various staff of the mansion and battling with them, but enjoys stronger opponents more, since they don’t «…fall apart…».
  • Neither Flandre nor her sister, Remilia, abide by the normal rules of strengths and weaknesses. This is speculated to be due to their foreign origin.
  • Flandre is apparently incapable of setting the table without breaking the plates.

Update!

«Waltz of Madness,» featuring Flandre Scarlet and Hong Meiling, has come to LostWord! Drop rates for these two friends are increased from June 4th to June 11th UTC. That and more are covered in the maintenance summary here.
