If you were surprised by the number of two letter words, the number of three letter words allowed in Scrabble will blow you away. But first, let me explain why you should do your very best to master them…
Three Good Reasons to Master
The Three Letter Words
Here are some very good reasons to start learning the three letter words right now…
FIRST Many of the unusual three letter words contain at least one mid to high-scoring tile. These words can make very decent scores with easy ‘double-crossings’. In fact, even with one point tiles you can garner some surprisingly high scores by spotting sneaky ‘parallel plays’.
SECOND Three letter words can perform miracles when it comes to clearing out those nasty vowel-ridden or consonant-ridden racks. An opening rack like this one won’t raise a sweat if you know BRR (the sound you make when you’re cold)…
Likewise, you won’t be too bothered by awkward vowel combinations once you have words like EAU and ULU under your belt.
THIRD Most satisfying of all, knowing the unusual three letter words will enable you to play that bingo that you thought was unplayable. For sneaking in bingos it’s especially important to know the three letter words that are surprising ‘hooks’ of two letter words, like BY to ABY and IS to ISM.
All Three Letter Words Allowed in Scrabble
Here is a list of all the three letter words allowed in Scrabble. Along with each word, I’ve included the word’s part of speech (in italics) followed by its meaning, inflections, and variant spellings (if it has any, of course).
- NOTE — In the list below, all the three letter words allowed in North American Scrabble are colored BLACK — that is, these are all the valid three letter words contained in the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary. The additional BLUE words are also allowed if you are using the international Scrabble dictionary — that is, Collins Scrabble Words, which is used outside of North America.
