17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
There are four key words used in Ephesians 3:18:
- breadth
- length
- depth
- height
Breadth
This word means breadth or width. It is used four times in three verses in the New Testament.
- Ephesians 3:18 – breadth
- Revelation 20:9 – the breadth of the earth
- Revelation 21:16 – length as large as the breadth; the length and breadth and height are equal
Length
This word means length. It is used three times in two verses in the New Testament.
- Ephesians 3:18 – length
- Revelation 21:16 – length as large as the breadth; the length and breadth and height are equal
Depth
This word means depth or deep. It is used in nine verses in the New Testament.
- Matthew 13:5; Mark 4:5 – seed had no depth
- Luke 5:14 – launch the boat into the deep (water)
- Romans 8:39 – nor height (G5313) nor depth … can separate us from the love of God
- Romans 11:33 – O, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God
- 1 Corinthians 2:10 – the Spirit searches the deep things of God
- 2 Corinthians 8:2 – their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the wealth of their liberality
- Ephesians 3:18 – depth
- Revelation 2:24 – the depths of Satan
Height
This word means height, elevation or altitude. It is used in six verses in the New Testament.
- Luke 1:78 – from on high
- Luke 24:49 – until you are clothed with power from on high
- Ephesians 3:18 – height
- Ephesians 4:8 – when he ascended up on high
- James 1:9 – let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted
- Revelation 21:16 – the length and breadth and height are equal
Conclusion
Dimensions in Ephesians 3
The depth and height are part of the same dimension, the vertical one – one goes up and one goes down. In the diagram above, the height and depth have arrows each going in only one direction, whereas the length and breadth extend in both directions.
So my conclusion is that there are not four dimensions in Ephesians 3:18. One of the dimensions is just split into two parts, i.e. the vertical dimension is split into height (going up) and depth (going down).
