1. The delicious object of adoration

2. Used for many purposes

3. Discovered by chance

4. Threat of getting poisoned

5. Selected for decoration

6. Several names for one fruit

7. Acquired by a spy

8. Nutritious varieties

A. Kiwifruit, shortened as kiwi, was named after the bird of the same name due to its fuzzy brown resemblance. The curiously shaped birds are endemic to New Zealand, and you’d expect the fruits to be, too. However, kiwifruit actually originated in China under a name that translates to ‘macaque peach’ due to its popularity with the local monkeys. First, New Zealand changed the name to ‘melonettes’, but that failed. Finally, the goose was reasonably replaced with New Zealand’s national bird and the berry broadened into fruit.

B. For centuries, everyone involved in the pineapple’s colonial trade absolutely adored it. The earliest records involve Carib Indians, expert navigators who traded and raided across the islands to collect all manner of bounty. When it was brought back to Europe, the pineapple was regarded as nature’s culinary masterpiece, a tropical delight reserved for English royalty. The women of colonial America competed with each other in arranging creative displays of food on their tabletops, with the sharp pineapple being king of the decorations and undeniable proof of wealth.

C. By now, it is common knowledge that the tomato has a tainted past. Being a member of the notoriously poisonous nightshade family, the bright red tomato was thought by wary Europeans to be toxic for over two centuries. But this was no simple assumption on appearance. Affluent Europeans did die of poisoning after eating tomatoes on their pewter plates. The acidity from the fruit released lead, a component metal of pewter alloy at the time, producing a deadly combination of tableware and tomato.

D. Humans raised and ate chili peppers specifically for their natural flame, producing varieties so intense that they blister skin and blind if exposed to the eye. In the records of conquistadors, the Aztecs and Maya ate chilies with anything and everything. Chilies were believed to have medicinal properties to cure various sicknesses. The smoke was used as a highly effective pest deterrent. If not practicing abstinence from chilies for religious or health reasons, a person who didn’t eat chili peppers would straightaway be presumed a witch!

E. Uniquely, ancestral strawberries originated in both Europe and North America. The French selected wild strawberries for sweetness, but the fruit was still small. King Louis XIV of France desired the Spanish throne, so he assigned a spy, Frezier, to study Chilean and Peruvian fortifications. But Frezier’s duty was not only to discover the military strength of the colonial Spanish. Previously, another dispatch had found unexpectedly large Chilean strawberries. A military engineer posing as a merchant, Frezier purchased the strawberries and brought them back to France.

F. Our favourite squash, the pumpkin wasn’t always able to be carved into sturdy, smiling Halloween decorations. However, even Pilgrims praised the pumpkin’s long storage time and sweetly nutritious flesh. Europeans were incremental to the creation of the modem pumpkin. The earliest jack-o’-lanterns were made from lit coals placed in hollow root vegetables such as turnips and potatoes. As Celtic tradition arrived in America, the pumpkin was grown through artificial selection to become the greatest carrier of fire and light.

G. Breadfruit was discovered by a scientific crew in Tahiti, an island located in the centre of the South Pacific. Eighteenth-century Europeans had gathered to witness the transit of Venus, an extremely rare astronomical event which is similar in nature to a solar eclipse by the Moon. With them was botanist Joseph Banks, who correctly and impressively identified the breadfruit as a cheap and nutritious fruit, albeit for the mistreated slaves of the sugar plantations. King George III directed Lieutenant William Bligh to gather this potentially valuable fruit.

“Buy land — they aren’t making it any more,” quipped Mark Twain. It’s a maxim that would certainly serve you well in a game of Monopoly, the bestselling board game that has taught generations of children to buy up property, stack it with hotels, and charge fellow players sky-high rents for the privilege of accidentally landing there.

The game’s little-known inventor, Elizabeth Magie, would no doubt have made herself go directly to jail if she’d lived to know just how influential today’s twisted version of her game has turned out to be. Why? Because it encourages its players to celebrate exactly the opposite values to those she intended to champion. Bom in 1866, Magie was an outspoken rebel against the norms and politics of her times. She was unmarried into her 40s, independent and proud of it, and made her point with a publicity stunt. Her aim, she told shocked readers, was to highlight the subordinate position of women in society. “We are not machines,” she said. “Girls have minds, desires, hopes and ambition.”

In addition to confronting gender politics, Magie decided to take on the capitalist system of property ownership — this time not through a publicity stunt but in the form of a board game. The inspiration began with a book that her father, the anti-monopolist politician James Magie, had handed to her. In the pages of Henry George’s classic, Progress and Poverty (1879), she encountered his conviction that “the equal right of all men to use the land is as clear as their equal right to breathe the air — it is a right proclaimed by the fact of their existence.” Determined to prove the merit of George’s proposal, Magie invented and in 1904 patented what she called the Landlord’s Game. Laid out on the board as a circuit (which was a novelty at the time), it was populated with streets and landmarks for sale. The key innovation of her game, however, lay in the two sets of rules that she wrote for playing it. Under the ‘Prosperity’ set of rules, every player gained each time someone acquired a new property, and the game was won when the player who had started out with the least money had doubled it. Under the ‘Monopolist’ set of rules, in contrast, players got ahead by acquiring properties and collecting rent from all those who were unfortunate enough to land there — and whoever managed to bankrupt the rest emerged as the sole winner.

The purpose of the dual sets of rules, said Magie, was for players to experience a “practical demonstration of the present system of land grabbing with all its usual outcomes and consequences” and hence to understand how different approaches to property ownership can lead to vastly different social outcomes. “It might well have been called ‘The Game of Life’, ‘remarked Magie’, “as it contains all the elements of success and failure in the real world, and the object is the same as the human race in general seems to have, for example, the accumulation of wealth.”

The game was soon a hit among Left-wing intellectuals, on college campuses including the Wharton School, Harvard and Columbia, and also among Quaker communities, some of which modified the rules and redrew the board with street names from Atlantic City. Among the players of this Quaker adaptation was an unemployed man called Charles Darrow, who later sold such a modified version to the games company Parker Brothers as his own.

Once the game’s true origins came to light, Parker Brothers bought up Magie’s patent, but then re-launched the board game simply as Monopoly, and provided the eager public with just one set of rules: those that celebrate the triumph of one over all. Worse, they marketed it along with the claim that the game’s inventor was Darrow, who they said had dreamed it up in the 1930s, sold it to Parker Brothers, and become a millionaire. It was a rags-to-riches fabrication that ironically exemplified Monopoly’s implicit values: chase wealth and crush your opponents if you want to come out on top.

So next time someone invites you to join a game of Monopoly, here’s a thought. As you set out piles for the Chance and Community Chest cards, establish a third pile for Land-Value Tax, to which every property owner must contribute each time they charge rent to a fellow player. How high should that land tax be? And how should the resulting tax receipts be distributed? Such questions will no doubt lead to fiery debate around the Monopoly board — but then that is exactly what Magie had always hoped for.

12

12

2) the principles of a real estate agency organization.

3) one of the rules taught at modem school.

4) the main principle of the game of Monopoly.

2) the values of the game have been turned upside down.

3) the influence of the game is reduced.

4) the players are encouraged greatly to buy it.

14

3) WTien a player acquires a new property, it gives him some disadvantages.

4) Every player gains each time someone acquires a new property.

17

17

According to Magie, the dual sets of rules were created because …

1) she wanted to show how to accumulate the wealth.

2) players could create the strategies useful for real life.

3) she wanted to show advantages and disadvantages people faced in the real world.

4) players could find special approaches to property ownership.

18

18

What are the implicit values of the modem Monopoly relaunched by Parker Brothers?

1) To become a millionaire and celebrate the triumph.

2) To distribute tax receipts wisely.

3) To accumulate wealth and destroy the opponents.

4) To charge rent and contribute social development.

The first maps were drawn by explorers to help them find their way home and show people where they had been. The maps showed the shape of the land, distances between places and special features such as caves and old trees.

Nowadays, maps show the towns and villages, and the roads, railways, rivers and mountains. Symbols are used to show all the different things on a map and there is a key to explain what the symbols stand for.

Over the centuries, people explored most of the Earth and put together the map of the world we use today. Maps of the world or large areas are often either pohtical or physical. The political map shows territorial borders. The purpose of the physical map is to show features of geography such as mountains, soil type or land use including roads, railroads and buildings.

When Andrew Garter was offered the position of Senior European Sales Manager in a large, successful multinational corporation, he A21 jumped at the chance. One of the main

reasons for his immediate acceptance was the opportunity for a large amount of foreign travel. He could see himself relaxing in a cafe by the Seine after a hard day’s business, before jetting

A22  off  to an important meeting the next morning in Prague. How romantic it all seemed.

And yet now, only eight months after his first day in the job, how different his emotions were. For Andrew Carter was experiencing what many international business travellers had experienced before him, and will experience for years to come, that a life  A23 spent on planes and in hotels is lonely, dull and exhausting.

He longed to be back at home, and dreamt of the simple pleasures of having someone to watch television with, of being asked how his day was. As he lay on the bed in his luxurious, yet strangely soulless hotel room, he A24 dreaded  the empty evening ahead of him. ‘What’s the A25 point,’ he asked himself, as he had done so many times, ‘of going out this evening?

I won’t talk to anyone. I won’t have anyone to enjoy it with. Every city’s the same when you’re alone.’ Not wanting to sit alone at a table in the hotel restaurant, he decided to have his evening meal delivered to his room by room service. Leafing through the menu, Andrew was

A26  struck by another desire — for some simple, home-cooked food. He sighed.

And then he thought the unthinkable. ‘I don’t have to A27 go on like this,’ he said out loud. ‘I’m still young. My whole life’s ahead of me. I could quit my job and do something I really enjoy. So what if I don’t make so much money? Money isn’t everything.’

It would take several years, and a number of A28 false starts, but finally Andrew Carter did leave his highly-paid position. He was scared, but for the first time in his life he was truly content.

Use the words in brackets to complete the abstract.
Scientists use both meteorological (meteorology) methods and historical records for
determination (determine) of the greatest amount of precipitation which is _ theoretically
(theory) possible within a region. The historical data consists of point precipitation amounts measured at rain gages
throughout the region being studied, or a region with very similar topographic characteristics. These rainfall data are
subsequently (subsequent) maximized through «moisture maximization» and other numerical methods.
Moisture maximization is a process in which the maximum possible atmospheric moisture for a region is applied to
rainfall data from a historic storm. This process increases the rainfall depths (deep), bringing them closer
to their potential maximum.

Functions of computers
Computer is one of the inventions of the 20th century that changed the world greatly. The first computers of the 1940th were enormous. But now they are almost in every family and in every office building. Some machines do only one job, some of them are multifunctional, but no device is as multifunctional as computer. The parts of the computer (or its hardware) remain the same, you change only the program (software) and your computer immediately learns to do various things. A browser program is designed to look at pages on the Internet (you can also say «to browse», this accounts for the word «browser»). A word processor program lets you print texts and then change styles of fonts and sizes of pages. A database program is used for searching and sorting records. Such programs are used at shops, libraries, hospitals, accountant offices and many other places. They make work with great amounts of data much quicker. Computers are found everywhere and used in every sphere of life. At a plant one can make a computer model of a car or plane and check its resistance to stress. Such calculations without a computer could have taken several months. Computer is also used at school: children watch presentations, films and web pages. This help them to study effectively. Computers also have some disadvantages. there is a famous joke that computers are designed to solve problems but half of the time they are the problem. As computer is a complicated device, one small breakage may stop its work. Moreover, the equipment is soon out of date. Besides, there is a problem of compatibility. First of all, there are hardware devices which cant work with the old operating system, such as a processor, a hard disk drive, a video card, etc. Then, there are programs which need more resources than computer actually has. Thirdly, computers become more and more complicated, and much effort is required to learn how to work with them. Fourthly, computer viruses cause a lot of trouble – they can spoil, remove or steal computer data, and every user knows it well from his personal experience. And on top of all, computer is a multifunctional device, as we already know, so it can be used both to do work and to entertain oneself. Children often fall prey to computer and Internet: they play computer games, spend their free time chatting with friends on the Internet and doing practically nothing. This aspect cant be denied. To crown it all, computer is a useful device like many others, designed to help people. But its our own free will that lets us use it in order not to waste time but to get best results
