The world would be a better place if we all spoke the same language. Do you agree? bOx3

As the world becomes more interconnected with the growth of the Internet and cheaper travel, it is important to examine the concept of a universal language. There are benefits in terms of travel and business, but a common language threatens a loss of culture and identity.
Firstly, a common language would mean there are no language barriers. Travelling to different countries would be easier and more accessible. In business, there would be less danger of misunderstandings. Furthermore, in situations of conflict where there are multiple troops from different countries, it would be easier for them to work together if they all spoke one language.
However, this would mean the loss of all other languages as they become unnecessary. Language is tied to culture. Through speaking a language one is projecting cultural history and identity. Moreover, the way language changes reflects both the history of a society and the current culture. Loss of a language means the loss of an important part of the culture.
Additionally there is evidence to show that language is linked to the way people think. People who speak multiple languages alter their thought process when they switch languages. The entire world speaking one language eliminates diversity of thought, threatening future development and invention.
In conclusion, although a universal language might make the world easier in terms of cooperation, it would not be a better place. It would mean the loss of culture, identity and diversity of thought. In the long term, these losses outweigh the benefits.

Those are some great examples, Peter.

Now, as to your language concern, you’ve definitely got a good feel for what’s going on. It’s no big mystery and really quite simple to explain.

If the speaker uses the indicative mood in a conditional sentence (will in one clause and the simple present in the other), he’s communicating a relatively high level of optimism. He’s saying that he sees this as a real possibility — perhaps a slight one, but real nonetheless.

If the speaker uses the subjunctive mood in a conditional sentence (would in one clause and the present subjunctive in the other), he’s communicating his feeling that this is very unlikely to happen or he doesn’t believe it will ever happen.

Look at these examples:

If I don’t post this reply to your question, you’ll never see it. (I am confident about this. I know it will really be this way.)

If I weren’t posting this reply to your question, you’d never see it. (I am confident about this. But I know it won’t be this way because I am posting this reply.)

I hope my explanation and examples help.

If people under 40 made the decisions, the world would be very different, good for some people and bad for others, because at each age people think differently. Older people are usually more responsible than youngsters. Moreover, the cultural and educational level is also important.

This statement is something real, but there are some young people who are very mature and hard-working, so we can think they may be prepared to make important decisions.

In a survey on this topic people from Spain showed that they didn’t like this statement because they disagree with the idea that states that youngsters can not make correct decisions. I believe this statement is difficult to defend.

I think that older people are much more experienced, they have been on this world longer and know the consequences of actions. This is why they may know the final result of these actions.

Younger people can think that older people don’t know about new or modern life. However, they have essential values of life to offer to younger people to behave correctly everyday.
