Our 10 Rock Bands With The Word “Pretty” In Their Name article presents a wide variety of groups and artists who are named after something “pretty.” One may think that there would be hundreds of bands that used the word pretty in defining who they were, especially during that glam era of the 70s and 80s. The truth is, there are not that many. Many of these bands also used famous song titles to name their bands. There are thousands of songs that use the word “pretty” in their titles.
The word pretty can also have many definitions. The word “pretty can be used as an adjective in defining something pleasant or moderately large or lacking, clever or more. It can be used as a noun in simply describing something or somebody beautiful. The word “pretty” can also be used as a verb as prettied. One will see in this article that many of these bands have used the word pretty in various degrees depending on the statement the band or artist was trying to make.
# 10 – Pretty Vacant
We open up our 10 Rock Bands With The Word “Pretty” In Their Name with the group called Pretty Vacant. The group was named after a classic Sex Pistols song, although the group sounds more glam than punk. Their album Walkin’ On A Tilt is well worth a listen. The group consisted of Kenny Vacant on lead vocals, Dave Trace on guitars Dave Belanger on bass and Marc Anthony on drums. Check them out.
# 9 – Pretty Wicked
The band Pretty Wicked was a glam metal band that missed the 80s big hair glam days by a couple of years. The group only released one album in 1992 entitled simply Pretty Wicked. The group consisted of Mark Hopkins on lead and backing vocals, Angelo Ballis on drums, Mark Moon and Geno Stevens on guitar and Silvio Valentini on bass. I like these guys. It would have been fun to have seen them live.
# 8 – Pretty Little Flower
After presenting two glam metal sounding bands we turn to some grindcore and death metal. The band Pretty Little Flower was formed in 1999 in the city of Houston, Texas. The group released two albums entitled Pulverizing Lethal Force in 2007 and Crushing Fury of Bastardization in 2008. If you listen to their sound you will probably understand why they changed their name to Pulverizing Lethal Force.
# 7 – Pretty Hate Machine
We jump from Houston, Texas in the number eight spot all the way across the world to Jakarta, Indonesia for our band placed at number seven entitled Pretty Hate Machine. The group definitely falls into the death metal category, while also exhibiting some piano riffs throughout their music. If you are into death metal, you might find this group very interesting as they do add original sounds to their compositions and recordings. We are guessing that they were named after the Nine Inch Nails album.
# 6 – Pretty Mouth
A very intense band from Toronto, Canada who has released a handful of full-length albums and multiple EPs. Their style is described as Mathcore which is a rhythmically complex progressive form of metalcore. Some people love this stuff.
# 5 – Pretty Ricky
Well, they may not be a rock band, but I think we need to take a much-needed break from all the metalcore and loud head-banging music to present an r&b band that also uses the word pretty in their name. The group Pretty Ricky hails from sunny Miami, Florida. The group released four studio albums between 2003 and 2009. Their single “Grind with Me” was a top 10 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2005.
# 4 – Pretty Maids
In the number four spot on our 10 Rock Bands With The Word “Pretty” In Their Name list, we take a look at the band Pretty Maids. The group hails from Horsens, Denmark. Pretty Maids have released fifteen studio albums between 1984 and 2009 as well as a couple of compilations. The group has a huge fan base in Japan and has toured with some of the biggest names in classic rock history. In the US they are best known for their album Future World which broke into the Billboard Top 200 albums charts in 1987. This is a band worth checking out.
# 3 – Pretty Boy Floyd
Pretty Boy Floyd remains one of those bands that everyone says, “hey remember that band Pretty Boy Floyd.” While maybe not a household name like Motley Crue, they had a huge fan base in the 1980s and 1990s. Named after a famous American Bank Robber, the group Pretty Boy Floyd hails from Hollywood California. The band had some commercial success with their album Leather Boyz with Electric Toyz. If you’re a fan of 80s hair bands, then you will love this group.
# 2 – The Pretty Reckless
One of our favorite bands with the word Pretty in their names is the fabulous group The Pretty Reckless. Led by the stunning Taylor Momsen, the group hails from our hometown of New York City. Taylor and her band released their first album in 2010 entitled Light Me Up. Since their debut album The Pretty Reckless have released three more studio albums with Going to Hell issued in 2014, Who You Selling For in 2016, and their most recent release Death by Rock and Roll in 2021. Their albums are full of no-nonsense great sounding modern rock and roll. Their album covers have also become collectible items for some fans as the provocative poses by Taylor Momsen on the covers have no doubt helped sell a few more records.
# 1 – The Pretty Things
Landing in the number one spot on our list is the well-known band The Pretty Things. The group was formed in the early 1960s in London, England. Their sound echoes the rhythms and melodies of many other bands from the UK during the dawn of the British Invasion. They have often been compared to the Rolling Stones in their sound and feel. The group has released fourteen studio albums and twice as many compilations. The band’s original singer Phil May still stands at the microphone fronting the band in the 2020s, just like Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones.

When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother,
♫ “What will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be pretty? Will I be pretty?» ♫
What comes next? Oh right, «Will I be rich?”
Which is almost pretty depending on where you shop.
And the pretty question infects from conception, passing blood and breath into cells.
The word hangs from our mothers’ hearts in a shrill fluorescent floodlight of worry.
“Will I be wanted? Worthy? Pretty?”
But puberty left me this fun house mirror dryad-
Teeth set at science fiction angles, crooked nose,
Face donkey-long and pox-marked where the hormones went finger-painting.
My poor mother.
“How could this happen?
You’ll have porcelain skin as soon as we can see a dermatologist.
You sucked your thumb. That’s why your teeth look like that!
You were hit in the face with a Frisbee when you were 6.
Otherwise your nose would have been just fine!»
“Don’t worry. We’ll get it all fixed!” She would say, grasping my face,
Twisting it this way and that, as if it were a cabbage she might buy.
But this is not about her. Not her fault.
She, too, was raised to believe the greatest asset she could bestow upon her awkward little girl was a marketable facade.
By 16, I was pickled with ointments, medications, peroxides.
Teeth corralled into steel prongs.
Laying in a hospital bed, face packed with gauze, cushioning the brand new nose the surgeon had carved.
Belly gorged on 2 pints of my blood I had swallowed under anesthesia,
And every convulsive twist of my gut like my body screaming at me from the inside out,
“What did you let them do to you!”
All the while this never-ending chorus droning on and on, like the IV needle dripping liquid beauty into my blood.
“Will I be pretty? Will I be pretty? Like my mother, unwrapping the gift wrap to reveal the bouquet of daughter her $10,000 bought her?
Pretty? Pretty.”
And now, I have not seen my own face in 10 years.
I have not seen my own face in 10 years, but this is not about me.
This is about the self-mutilating circus we have painted ourselves clowns in.
About women who will prowl 30 stores in 6 malls to find the right cocktail dress,
But haven’t a clue where to find fulfillment or how wear joy, wandering through life shackled to a shopping bag,
Beneath those 2 pretty syllables.
About men wallowing on bar stools, drearily practicing attraction and everyone who will drift home tonight,
Crest-fallen because not enough strangers found you suitably fuckable.
This, this is about my own some-day daughter.
When you approach me, already stung-stayed with insecurity, begging,
“Mom, will I be pretty? Will I be pretty?”
I will wipe that question from your mouth like cheap lipstick and answer,
“No! The word pretty is unworthy of everything you will be, and no child of mine will be contained in five letters.»
“You will be pretty intelligent, pretty creative, pretty amazing.
But you, will never be merely ‘pretty’.”
