It’s time for another quick French lesson, so let’s get to it! The first way most of us learn to say “only” in French is by using the world seulement. But there’s another way to say “only” that was a little confusing to me at first.
Let me tell you about it…
Quick French lesson: How to say only in French
The French language is full of fun surprises! (and sometimes makes you want to run and hide)
Today’s quick French lesson is on the word “only.” This is not a comprehensive lesson, nor am I a French grammar expert, so if you want to get super technical and in depth, consult a French grammar book like this one for further info.
The most straightforward way to say only is by using the word seulement or in some cases, seul(e).
This is the first way I learned to say only in French. For example, if you want to say, “You are the only girl at the party,” you can say tu es la seule fille à la fête. (Keep in mind, seul(e} can also mean alone or even lonely, just to confuse you more. ;-)).
A case where you’d use seulement to mean only is if you want to say, “I only have 3 euros in my pocket.” That would be, J’ai seulement 3 euros dans ma poche.
That’s easy, right? Yes, and that’s how, even today, I probably say the word only in French 90% of the time.
Now, for today’s lesson:
The other, less logical, way for how to say only in French is to use the “ne… que” construction.
I learned this after moving here and not really understanding what people were saying.
So for example, le magasin n’a que des kiwis pourris (the store only has spoiled kiwis). Or il n’y a que des belles maisons dans cette rue.
Another one I hear frequently enough from shopkeepers is, je n’ai que ça (in natural speech, you’d drop the “ne” and hear j’ai que ça). This is in response to asking a shopkeeper if they have any other products or something along those lines, and if they don’t, they’d reply, “no, I only have this.” When I’d hear that, I’d be so lost thinking, “What? I have that it? That doesn’t make sense!” At that time, I didn’t realize the “ne… que” construction existed and was also a way to express “only.”
The reason why “ne… que” was confusing for me was twofold:
1) ne is first taught as a part of negative sentence construction, like “ne… pas” or “ne… jamais” to mean not or never. So je n’ai pas de chat. (I don’t have a cat.) Or je ne vais jamais à Paris pendant la semaine. (I never go to Paris during the week.)
2) que has a few meanings aside from “only.” Que can mean what as in que faîtes-vous ? or “that” or “than” depending on the context. Like here, il fera plus froid aujourd’hui qu’hier. (It’ll be colder today than yesterday)
I just didn’t know that “ne… que” meant “only” and when I’d listen for it (or see it written), I’d either see/hear the “ne” (though it’s often dropped) and think someone was negating something by saying “not” with a “ne…pas” except I’d never hear the “pas”. Or I’d only hear the “que” and think someone was saying “that” or “what” but I couldn’t quite piece it together. Little did I know they were saying ONLY! Ahhhhhhhhh!
The “ne… que” construction can get a bit complicated from here. Generally, the ne goes in front of the verb and the que follows it, but sometimes que can come directly before the word you’re looking to emphasize, like in this example: Il n’a bu que 2 verres de vin pour te faire plaisir. (He only drank 2 glasses of wine to make you happy.) There’s also the “ne… pas que” (not only) construction. But let’s leave it there for today, OK?
Learn from my mistakes, folks!
Even if you personally never use the “ne… que” construction, know that it exists and listen for it. It’s used quite often and is how you say only in French!

What has been tripping you up in French lately? Have you ever had a lightbulb moment while learning a foreign language? Hope you enjoyed my post on how to say only in French.
Happy learning! 😉

There are two common French equivalents for the restrictive «only» in English: seulement and ne… que. These two terms mean essentially the same thing, but seulement is an adverb of quantity while ne… que is a negative adverb, so they’re used a bit differently
Seulement: Only
The simplest way to say «only» in French is with the adverb seulement, which can qualify a noun, verb, or clause.
J’ai seulement un livre.
I have only one book.
Il voit seulement les films étrangers.
He only sees foreign movies.
Note how the placement of seulement can change the meaning:
J’ai lu seulement deux pages pour te faire plaisir.
I read only two pages to please you. (You didn’t want me to read more.)
J’ai lu deux pages seulement pour te faire plaisir.
I read two pages only to please you. (I didn’t feel like reading, but I did it for you.)
Il veut seulement travailler à la banque.
He only wants to work at the bank. (He doesn’t want to invest there).
Il veut travailler seulement à la banque.
He wants to work only at the bank. (He doesn’t want to work at the store).
Ne… Que: Only in the Negative
An equally common but slightly more complicated way to say «only» is with ne… que, which is used similarly to other negative adverbs: ne goes in front of the verb and que usually follows it.
Je n’ai qu’un livre.
I have only one book.
Il ne voit que les films étrangers.
He sees only foreign movies.
As with seulement, you can change the meaning by placing que directly in front of the word you want to qualify.
Je n’ai lu que deux pages pour te faire plaisir.
I read only two pages to please you.
Je n’ai lu deux pages que pour te faire plaisir.
I read two pages only to please you.
Il ne veut que travailler à la banque.
He only wants to work at the bank.
Il ne veut travailler qu’à la banque.
He wants to work only at the bank.
Note that indefinite and partitive articles do not change to de after ne… que, the way they do after other negative adverbs:
Je n’ai qu’un livre.
I have only one book.
Il ne veut que des idées.
He only wants ideas, He’s just looking for some ideas.
Negation: Not Only
To say «not only,» you can negate ne… que into ne… pas que, which can stand alone or be followed by additional information:
Je n’ai pas que 3 livres (j’ai 2 stylos aussi).
I don’t have only 3 books (I have 2 pens too)
Il n’y a pas que le travail (il faut vivre aussi).
Work isn’t all there is; there’s more [to life] than just work.
Il n’était pas qu’en retard….
He wasn’t just late (there’s more to it than that).
Seulement
Seulement has two negatives. The first one, ne… pas seulement is pretty much interchangeable with ne… pas que.
Je n’ai pas seulement 3 livres…
I don’t have only 3 books …
Il n’y a pas seulement le travail….
Work isn’t all there is…
Il n’était pas seulement en retard….
He wasn’t just late…
Non-Seulement
The other negative, non seulement, cannot be used in a stand-alone clause; it must be balanced with something like aussi, mais encore, etc.
Il y a non seulement le travail ; il faut vivre aussi.
Work isn’t all there is; you have to live too.
Non seulement j’ai 3 livres, mais aussi 2 stylos.
I don’t have only 3 books, I have 2 pens too.
Non seulement il était en retard, mais encore il était ivre.
He was not only late, but drunk (too). Not only was he late, he was (also) drunk.
«Only» might seem like a pretty lonely word, but there are actually several different ways of saying it in French: the adjectives seul(e) and unique, the adverb seulement and uniquement, and the verb phrase ne… que.
First let’s take a look at the words seul(e) and seulement:
Parce que le mardi, c’est le seul jour où je ne travaille pas.
Because Tuesday is the only day when I don’t work.

Seulement is the adverbial form of the adjective seul(e), which has another similar (and sadder!) meaning as well:
Alors je me retrouve un petit peu seul en ce moment.
So I find myself a little alone right now.
Caption 5, Hugo Bonneville — Gagner sa vie
Play Caption
Some other ways of saying «alone» or «lonely» are solitaire and isolé(e).
And seulement has some additional meanings of its own. It can be used to express a regret («if only…») and to mean «however»:
Si seulement je l’avais su avant.
If only I had known before.
Il veut venir, seulement il ne peut pas.
He wants to come, however he can’t.
Although unique and uniquement are most directly translated as «unique» and «uniquely,» they can also mean «only»:
Je suis un enfant unique.
I am an only child.
Ce que l’on demande, c’est d’avoir uniquement la photo de l’animal.
What we’re asking is to have only the photo of the animal.
Caption 17, Grand Lille TV — Des photos contre l’abandon des animaux

Now let’s look at a bit more complicated way of saying «only»: the verb phrase ne… que. As you might have guessed, ne… que is a negative construction, as in ne… pas (not), ne… personne (no one), and ne… rien (nothing). In these constructions, the two components go on either side of the verb:
Il ne mesure que soixante-dix mètres carrés,
It only measures seventy square meters,
Caption 8, Voyage dans Paris — Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Moi je ne parlais que français.
Me, I spoke only French.
Caption 10, Annie Chartrand — Grandir bilingue

Most of the time, ne… que can be replaced with seulement:
Il mesure seulement soixante-dix mètres carrés.
It only measures seventy square meters.
Moi, je parlais seulement français.
Me, I spoke only French.
Sometimes, que can mean «only» outside of the ne… que construction. For example, in an interview with Le Figaro, A-lister Ashton Kutcher laments being typecast as a jokester, declaring: «Je ne suis pas qu’un clown!» (I’m not only a clown!)
The ne in this sentence goes with pas (not), while the que stands on its own to mean «only.» Ashton (or his translator) could just as well have said, Je ne suis pas seulement un clown!
