15:3 Behold to me thou hast given no seed — Not only no son, but no seed. If he had had a daughter, from her the promised Messias might have come, who was to be the Seed of the Woman; but he had neither son nor daughter.

15:5 And he brought him forth — It seems, early in the morning, and said, look now toward heaven, and tell the stars: so shall thy seed be — So innumerable, for so the stars seem to a common eye. Abram feared he should have no child at all, but God tells him his descendents should be so many as not to be numbered. So illustrious, as the stars of heaven for splendour; for to them pertained the glory, #Rom 9:4|. Abram’s seed according to the flesh were like the dust of the earth, #Ge 13:16|, but his spiritual seed are like the stars of heaven.

15:6 And he believed in the Lord — That is, believed the truth of that promise which God had now made him, resting upon the power, and faithfulness of him that made it: see how the apostle magnifies this faith of Abram, and makes it a standing example, #Rom 4:19 |- 21. He was not weak in faith; he staggered not at the promise: he was strong in faith; he was fully persuaded. The Lord work such a faith in every one of us. And he counted it to him for righteousness — That is, upon the score of this he was accepted of God, and, by faith he obtained witness that he was righteous, #Heb 11:4|. This is urged in the New Testament to prove, that we are justified by faith without the works of the law, #Rom 4:3|,Gal 3:6, for Abram was so justified, while he was yet uncircumcised. If Abram, that was so rich in good works, was not justified by them, but by his faith, much less can we. This faith, which was imputed to Abram for righteousness, had newly struggled with unbelief, #Ge 15:2|, and coming off, conqueror, it was thus crowned, thus honoured.

7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid(N) of them, for I am with you(O) and will rescue(P) you,” declares the Lord.(Q)

“I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied.

12 The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching[b](X) to see that my word is fulfilled.”

“I see a pot that is boiling,” I answered. “It is tilting toward us from the north.”

14 The Lord said to me, “From the north(Z) disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. 15 I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms,” declares the Lord.

“Their kings will come and set up their thrones
    in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem;
they will come against all her surrounding walls
    and against all the towns of Judah.(AA)
16 I will pronounce my judgments(AB) on my people
    because of their wickedness(AC) in forsaking me,(AD)
in burning incense to other gods(AE)
    and in worshiping(AF) what their hands have made.(AG)

17 “Get yourself ready! Stand up and say(AH) to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified(AI) by them, or I will terrify you before them. 18 Today I have made you(AJ) a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you but will not overcome(AK) you, for I am with you(AL) and will rescue(AM) you,” declares the Lord.

Then the word of the LORD came to him:

“Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.”

So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?”

As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.”

“As surely as the LORD your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”

Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.

14

For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land.’ ”

15

She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family.

16

For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah.

The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.

Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.

Then the word of the LORD came to him:

The question that we are concerned with is, “What is the meaning of the phrase, Word of the Lord?” This brief study will explain its meaning in the Old Testament and what it means in the New Testament.

“Word of the Lord” In The Old Testament

The meaning of the phrase “Word of the Lord” is illustrated for us in Genesis 15:1-4. In this passage God is speaking to Abram.

After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying,
“Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you;
Your reward shall be very great.”
Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Since You have given no offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir.” Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.” Genesis 15:1-4. Notice that in verse 1 we are explicitly told that the Lord spoke to Abram in a vision. We are also told that when God spoke these words it was called “the word of the Lord.” Verse 4 illustrates the same point.

Some select examples of the Lord speaking to someone and it being called “the word of the Lord” can be found in Deuteronomy 34:4-5; 1 Samuel 3:1-9;  1 Kings 6:11; Isaiah 39:5; Jeremiah 1:4-8; Ezekiel 6:1-7; Hosea 1:1; Joel 1:1; Jonah 1:1; Micah 1:1; Zephaniah 1:1; Haggai 1:1 and Zechariah 1:1. In each one of these passages the Lord speaks directly to a prophet.

“Word of the Lord” In The New Testament

In the New Testament, the phrase “Word of the Lord” did not change its fundamental meaning. It now had an added nuance in understanding. In Luke 22:61-62 the phrase was still used to refer to God and it referred to our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly. Luke 22:61-62 (NASB)

You will notice that Peter remembered Jesus’ comment to Him, that is recorded in Luke 22:34, that he would deny Christ three times. In this instance the phrase “Word of the Lord” referred to the words of Jesus. Acts 11:16 also used the phrase in reference to Jesus’ words.

Beginning in Acts and running through 1 Peter, the phrase frequently had another slight nuance in meaning. It now also referred to the Scriptures because they are the “Word of the Lord.” The Bible does not contain the Word of the Lord; it is the Word of the Lord (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21). 1 Peter 1:23-25 gives us an explicit statement that reveals the Word of the Lord also refers to Scripture.

. . . through the living and enduring word of God.
For,
“ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS,
AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS.
THE GRASS WITHERS,
AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFF,
BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER.”
And this is the word which was preached to you. 1 Peter 1:23-25 (NASB)

This means that Word of the Lord can be oral or the written record of God’s communication which we call Scripture. Some other passages that reveal “Word of the Lord” refers to Scripture are Acts 12:24; 13:44, 48-49; 15:35-36; 16:32; 19:10, 20;1 Thessalonians 1:8; 4:15 and 2 Thessalonians 3:1). Every time in the New Testament the “Word of the Lord” refers to the authoritative and inspired words of God.

Conclusion:

Have you ever wished you could hear the Lord speak? Then open the Bible and read it. It is the Word of the Lord. The Bible is often called the “Word of Truth”  (Psalm 119:43; 2 Timothy 2:15). It is also called the “word of God.” When you read the Bible, imagine God or Christ speaking to you. It is the very words of the Lord.

For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NASB)

One of the most important “Words from the Lord” is that He calls us to believe in Christ. For He says,

Behold, now is “THE ACCEPTABLE TIME,” behold, now is “THE DAY OF SALVATION” 2 Corinthians 6:2 (NASB)
