The word of notch

The Word of Notch was Notch’s Tumblr-powered personal blog, which functioned as a development feed for Minecraft. The Word of Notch could be used to view old Minecraft blog posts that go all the way back to May 13, 2009, when Minecraft began development,[1] up to around the Adventure Update, when update content posts from Notch became less frequent. When the blog was no longer used for Minecraft development, it was removed from the Official links section on the Minecraft website.

The Word of Notch contained information revealing future updates, as well as daily happenings at the Mojang office and behind-the-scenes posts about Minecraft’s history and technical aspects. The blog also contained a direct feed from his Twitter account. After Notch stopped working on Minecraft, his posts were made up of his opinions and daily thoughts or focuses, which were only posted about once every couple of months.

The last post on The Word of Notch was from August 19th, 2013, titled «So that’s what I’m going to do», detailing what his plans were after he cancelled development on the unreleased game 0x10c.

On August 26, 2021, it was discovered that the blog had disappeared, for reasons unknown. Possible explanations may include manual deletion by Notch himself, or Tumblr removing the blog due to it being inactive. Image links from the blog were replaced with disclaimers stating that the content had been removed for «violating Tumblr’s community guidelines».

Слово Нотча — The Word of Notch

level 1

Based on this statement:

The code I write to support that will also be possible to reuse in the future for things like books and notes written by players, and possibly even custom paintings/hand drawn signs.

I’m really hoping that we can take maps and place them on walls the way we can currently use paintings. Imagine a command and control center at the center of our secret fortress with a wall-to-wall map of our domains!

level 2

Wall-to-wall maps of our domains that show the positions of our minions! (As long as they are holding map copies)

Finally a practical way to command an evil army in Minecraft.

level 2

One of the most exciting things about this (besides how awesome maps are) is the possibility for editable paintings. Lots of possibilities there.

level 2

Or… Minecraft Capture-the-Map server games. Team-based PvP where the objective is to find the enemy’s map.

Edit: I am chastened. Objection -> Objective

level 2

I geeked out over the thought of crafting atlases with multiple maps. Imagine uses for bookshelves! Imagine stumbling upon a shack full of rows and rows of maps of different areas!

Oh man… geek geek

level 2

This could make minecraft one of the best modding games ever. Imagine a a war with this.

level 2

This is a fantastic idea. It would be awesome if hanging a map would stop it from updating. I would love to have a map of my freshly created world, and the subsequent changes I have made to it!

Notch has really outdone himself with this idea.

level 1

I like the idea of how it’s actually a map with borders and not some magical automap

level 2

the «magical automap» is kinda what I was afraid of, but I like this. It requires you to use it like a legit map. I just hope we can clone them and apply them to a section of wall, like paintings. That way we can take one out exploring, and if we die we can check the map at the command post to see where the corpse of Clone STV-127 lies.

level 2

To add to that I find it very interesting there is no you are here markers on the map. Makes getting your bearings with the map a bit trickier and really adds a sense or realism.

level 1

It would be cool if maps could also be used as thumbnail icons for saved worlds…

level 2

This is a fantastic idea. Would really help me remember which is which, given the incredibly obscure names I give them.

level 1

Will there be underground maps also? What about using the map underground? Will I be able to cheat by using a map underground in a place I’ve never been above ground and see if there is a lake above my head?

level 2

You can’t map a 3D environment like that to a 2D plane. Even using Minecraft Xray (a 3D viewer) it can be difficult to find your bearings.

level 2

Notch says the idea is «interesting». I hope he seriously considers it!

level 1

Anyone else think it’s really cool that you have to look down at your map? Little things.

level 2

Makes me think of the map in Far Cry 2, which was always right in front of your face. Nice to have a difference.
