The Word Alive are an American metalcore band hailing from Phoenix, Arizon. They have been together since 2008 and are signed to Fearless Records.
The Word Alive was founded in 2008 by Craig Mabbitt on lead vocals, with Tony Pizzuti on rhythm guitar and Zack Hansen on lead guitar. They formed of a band called Syrens and Clouds Take Shape. Mabbit later recruited Dusty Riach on keyboard, Tony Aguilera on drums and Nick Urlacher on bass, unfortunately due to contrasting schedules, Mabbit was forced to leave the band and focus his attention on Escape the Fate. They later employed Tyler “Telle” Smith who was once upon a time the front man of band In Fear and Faith.
It was with Smith fronting that gained the attention of labels, as they wrote a few tracks that would later become components of the EP entitled “Empire”, which was released on July 21st 2009 and reached No. 15 on the Billboard Heat seeker chart. Their leading single “Battle Royale” was very successful, being feature in the Rock Band series of games. It also made the tracklist of the 2010 Vans Warped Tour Compilation and fast became the band’s signature song.
Following numerous tours that year, they began working on what would be their debut full-length album, “Deceiver”, which was released on August 31st 2010 through Fearless Records. The title comes from the lyrics to a chorus of a song called “The Wretched” The album earned the band a lot of positive acclaim, and reached 97 on the Billboard 200 chart, number 37 on Rock Ablums and number 15 on Top Independent Albums. Their following album “Life Cycles”, reached number 50 on the US Billboard 200 with it’s heavier and more mature sound. It sold 10,000 copies in its first week.
Most recently the band released an album entitled “REAL” on June 10th 2014, which was produced by John Feldmann and Cameron Mizell. Its their self proclaimed heaviest album yet, but apparently their most melodic too.

Performed better than expected. Compared to the last time I saw them in November, they greatly improved in their performance as it was much smoother this time. They did perform a cover which, in their own words, was better than the original (totally forgot the song…) and also their latest single they just released. TWA did promise they had a new album coming up for release in a few months. The crowd was pretty wild for them up until the lead started thanking the other bands & crowd as he mentioned the old folks were here for PE. He even made a cougar joke! It was interesting that this time the lead made no mention of mental health where in November he went on a well-spoken mini-rant. TWA started on time, had great crowd interaction and played near continuously. They also had AV’s lead sing with them during a song and it was pretty adorable watching the two leads dance together. TWA’s lead did a super high jump at one point. Once again, they were pro-other bands and pro E27 staff, asking the crowd to remember tipping merch sellers & bartenders. TWA’s backdrop was a simple gif loop of their name. My only two mehs were the bassist kept taking puffs off vapes from crowd randos and vocals. The crowd would throw their vape to him, he’d catch, puff, then throw back out. Gross. I did feel like the lead’s voice could’ve been brought out more above the instruments. Other than that, it was a great performance & I would want to see them again. Maybe I’ll get a t-shirt next time?

I love seeing all the opening acts because you find ‘diamonds in the rough’ like The Word Alive. They put on a headliner performance and laid the path for Pop Evil. The lead singer, Tyler Smith reminds me of Noah Sebastian from Bad Omens. The range they have and the stage presence is incredible. I look forward to more shows and more music in the future.

They mainly played a lot of new stuff. Which isn’t the best but not the worst either. I’m more of the old school the word alive from warped tour days. Those days were the best. I’ve seen them live 3 times and they always put on a great show. Only if they would mix it up and play new and old songs. Then it would have been a better show.

About The Word Alive
Since emerging in 2009, their first decade comprised Deceiver [2010], Life Cycles [2012], Real. [2014], and Dark Matter [2016], reaching a high watermark on Violent Noise in 2018. Bringing their total streams past 100 million, the latter included “Why Am I Like This?” [9.7 million Spotify streams] and “Red Clouds” [4.7 million Spotify streams] in addition to garnering acclaim from the likes of New Noise who asserted, “Their excellent and engaging Violent Noise has all the hallmarks of a band at the peak of its powers.” After a triumphant decade anniversary tour, the group once again set their sights on the future cast in fire on the 2019 single “Burning Your World Down.” Produced by Erik Ron [Panic! At The Disco, Godsmack], it teeters between synth swells, gut-punching riffs, and a hypnotic hook, igniting a new era for the band and setting the stage for their sixth full-length—out now.
