The Other F Word is a 2011 American documentary film directed by independent filmmaker Andrea Blaugrund Nevins. The film explores the world of aging punk rock musicians, as they transition into parents and try to maintain the contrast between their anti-authoritarian lifestyle with the responsibilities of fatherhood, the titular «other F word». In addition to interviewing over twenty musicians^[1] from across the spectrum of the punk genre, including Mark Hoppus of Blink 182 and Fat Mike of NOFX, the film also includes other emblematic figures of subculture such as professional skateboarder Tony Hawk, in a chronicle of the struggles and rewards that accompany raising their children.

It was released in the U.S. by Oscilloscope Laboratories in 2011.

Premise[edit]

Primarily rotating around interviews of Pennywise lead singer Jim Lindberg, the documentary intermittently switches amongst different musicians, as it jumps between their travels on the road doing concert tours and time spent at home with their kids. In the course of the movie, the interviews are interspersed with archived concert footage of the punk rockers, from recent shows as well as their early years, to depict some of the challenges they face in their roles as parents — while at the same time maintaining their roles as anti-establishment figures for their punk rock fan following. Remarking that their adolescence often lacked much in the way of paternal guidance,^[2] the interviewees speak of how they earnestly are trying to be the supportive role models for their kids, that they themselves never had while growing up.

Production[edit]

The film’s first-time director Nevins, initially conceived of the idea for the documentary after reading a book by Jim Lindberg called «Punk Rock Dad»,^[2] that explored his own feelings of being the raucous punk rocker of his band Pennywise, while at the same time raising kids. Thinking of the punk rock and fatherhood combination as a «fun oxymoron», Nevins originally believed the film would be in the spirit of a comedy, but after realizing how layered and heartfelt the experiences of the men she interviewed really were, the direction of the film changed significantly. The relatively low-cost budget of the film was maintained by the use of its inexpensive camera work and a soundtrack that features most of the artists interviewed throughout the film.

Box office[edit]

The Other F Word garnered $53,200 in gross earnings, bringing in $13,286 with its opening weekend premiere in two theaters.

Critical reception[edit]

The documentary received generally positive reviews from critics, with Jeanette Catsoulis of The New York Times describing it as «a compelling and often touching peek at punk paternity»^[3] and Joe Heim of The Washington Post praising the film’s dual nature as «beautifully shot and requisitely gritty.»^[4] Rotten Tomatoes lists twenty-two fresh reviews of the film giving it a 76% overall rating.^[5]

Awards[edit]

The 2011 South by Southwest film festival nominated The Other F Word for its «Films Presented» award.

«People» — исчисляемое существительное во множественном числе, поэтому «another» с ним использовать грамматически неверно. Если быть точнее, «people» относится к группе коллективных существительных (они всегда во множественном числе), но это сейчас неважно.

The other

The other – другой, один из двух-трёх. Данное словосочетание используют только тогда, когда понятно, что объектов только два или (намного реже) три. Оно может ставиться перед существительными, местоимением «one» или употребляться самостоятельно (прибавляя окончание «-s«, тем самым становясь похожим на «The others«, но только внешне). The others

The others – оставшиеся другие из конкретной данной группы. Употребляется с существительными во множественном числе и когда ясно, что другие – это оставшаяся часть какой-то группы объектов/вещей, какого-то множества.

Those trees are oaks; the others are pines
Вот те деревья – дубы, все остальные – сосны

There were three books on my table. One is here. Where are the others?
На столе лежало три книги. Одна здесь. Где другие(остальные из трёх / из данной группы книг)?

We’ll stay here, the others will go there

Нередко слово «the other» означает «другие из той же группы, сообщества и т.п.», то есть становится очень похоже на «the others». Например:

The other people said…
Другие люди сказали…

Но какая тогда между «the other» и «the others» разница? После «the others» существительное не ставится. В то время, как после «the other» обычно (но не всегда) требуется существительное. То же самое относится к словам «other» и «others«.

«Other» и «Others»

Данные местоимения употребляются с исчисляемыми и неисчисляемыми существительными во множественном числе. Имеется в виду, что «другие» выбираются из неопределённого числа объектов/вещей, из неограниченного множества. Разницы между ними двумя по значению никакой нет, просто, когда перед местоимением «other» не ставится существительное, то к нему прибавляется буква «-s«. Вот и всё, сравните:

Take others

She has other interests

You have interests and she has others
У тебя одни интересы, а у неё другие

«Otherwise» и «Other than»

Следующие слова Вам могут показаться совершенно ясными, однако мне очень часто встречались люди, которые путаются в значении данных слов, то есть они не до конца понимали, что они значат и как их переводить.

• Наречие «Otherwise» переводится как «иначе«, «в противном случае«, то есть оно значит, если не будет сделано что-то, что было упомянуто раньше, то это что-то произойдёт в будущем:

Practice English every day; otherwise you won’t improve
Практикуйте английский каждый день, иначе не будете развиваться

То есть, всё очень просто: если не будете практиковаться каждый день, то не будете совершенствоваться в английском.

• Словосочетание «Other than» обычно значит «ничего, кроме » или «не более«. Например:

This company doesn’t make anything other than cars
Эта копания делает ничего, кроме автомобилей / только автомобили

То есть, данная компания специализируется только на производстве автомобилей, больше она ничего не производит. Иногда «Other than» означает «плюс ко всему ещё одно», то есть почти противоположность:

I took a shower, washing every body part with actual soap. I washed my hair with adult-formula shampoo and used cream rinse for that just-washed shine. Other than that, I’m in good shape.

• Type out all lyrics, even repeating song parts like the chorus
• Lyrics should be broken down into individual lines
• Use section headers above different song parts like [Verse], [Chorus], etc.
