The Last Word is an exotic hand cannon. It can be purchased from Xûr, obtained as a random completion reward, from raids, or from the Prison of Elders.

Within Destiny 2, The Last Word was given by Shin Malphur to an unnamed Guardian in their attempt to slay a Hive Weapons Master during an exotic quest. The Guardian kept the weapon as a gift, bringing about the scrutiny of The Drifter (Character), due to The Drifter’s allegiance with the Guardian and his hatred for Shin Malphur.

In Year 1, I do remember having The Last Word for a short time. I don’t remember how I got it, but I remember taking one look and deciding the weapon wasn’t really for me. (Some may call this a handicap, but «shooting from the hip» doesn’t really fit my playstyle and TLW heavily favors players who do.) So, I dismantled it since I never planned to use it and Vaults weren’t really that spacious back then.
Now we’re in Year 2 and The Taken King is here. Along with it, a quest called «Jolly Holliday» which requires TLW in order to be completed. I’m really hoping Bungie didn’t give this to us without also giving us a relatively easy way of getting TLW. Considering that many Year 1 players — even some of the most devoted Day 1 veterans — wouldn’t have gotten Gjallarhorn without Xur’s help, it seems absurd to make any quest rely on a player having a specific Exotic.
So, I know this is a stretch but, I’m really hoping someone can help me out here. Is there any method — short of waiting for Xur to stock it — that gives a substantially higher-than-random (if not guaranteed) chance of spawning TLW? Or am I just stuck with this quest in my queue until I get that lucky?

The upgraded version of one of Year 1’s best weapons is on sale this week.
Xur has the Year 3 version of The Last Word on sale this weekend in Destiny. If you’ve played the game at all during its first year, you will know how formidable The Last Word was.
In Year 2, it remained a very strong PvP weapon. In fact, it was among the best — if not the best — 1v1 weapon in the Crucible. You’ll often see Trials of Osiris players in particular use it, just because of how effective it is.
To this day, you can still find it among PvP player’s regular inventory.
The Fan Fire perk allows you to fan the hammer and fire all bullets quickly, and maybe pretend you’re a space cowboy. Paired with the named perk, you get accurate hip fire and do good damage.
That said, it’s not the best hand cannon for PvE. It’s only worth avoiding if you’re a strictly PvE-only player, otherwise it’s a strong recommendation.

- Visit The Drifter. Unlike past Destiny 2 quests, The Last Word quest is available for pickup directly from The Drifter. No need to wait on an RNG drop from Vex or anything like that.
- Kill Hive. This step requires players to kill Hive in three different ways: The player needs hive kills with solar damage, 75 kills of Hive, and kills on 3 Hive bosses.
- Return to the Drifter. Now the Gambit vendor will give players the next steps in the quest.
- Crucible Kills. This is likely to be the first roadblock for players on the way to The Last Word. Players will need to accrue Crucible kills while avoiding deaths.
- Titan Mission. Head to Titan and complete the story mission. It’s 500 Power Level and the key mechanic is to kill the Wizards before you can get to the boss.
- The Big Step. This step requires a lot of things. First, players need to earn 50 tokens by killing Hive via precision kills. A precision kill does not guarantee a token, though, so it will likely take more than 50 kills.
- The Conversation. Make your way through this mission defeating enemies. Take note that the Attrition modifier is active so the only way to replenish your health is by picking up the little wells of light.
