Meet the zyzzyva… a weevil that’s the new last word in the dictionary: Reign of ancient Egyptian beer zythum comes to an end after ten years

  • Ten-year reign of zythum will end in latest edition of Oxford English Dictionary
  • Zyzzyva is a genus of tropical weevils often found in palm trees in South America
  • Word will be last in list of 826,000 entries in English language according to OED

Published: 02:01 BST, 26 June 2017 | Updated: 10:42 BST, 27 June 2017

For ten years it has proudly claimed the title of being the last entry in the Oxford English Dictionary.

But the reign of zythum – which describes an ancient Egyptian malt beer — will finally come to an end today when it is replaced by zyzzyva in the latest quarterly edition of the reference book.

Zyzzyva is a genus of tropical weevils often found in palm trees in South America. According to the OED, the word should be pronounced Ziziva.

Try pronouncing that one! Zyzzyva is a genus of weevils found in South American palm trees

The word, which will now become the final listed among the 826,000 entries in the English language according to the OED, has previously appeared in a number of other dictionaries and will now finally receive recognition.

Fiona McPherson, new words editor, told The Times: ‘No one knows where zyzzyva came from.’

‘There are some sources saying it makes a reference to the noises made by the weevil.’

The OED tracks the changes and developments in word meanings over time and it the definite record of the English language.

Ending with style: Word will be last in list of 826k entries in English language according to OED

Zyzzyva’s first use is understood to have been by entomologist Thomas Lincoln Casey Jr in a book that was published in 1922.

Miss McPherson added: ‘A word’s inclusion in the OED does cement it. Once it goes into the OED it never comes out.’

With the Wimbledon tennis championship just a week away, more than 80 tennis related words and phrases have also made their way into the records, including ‘superbrat’, ‘continental grip’ and ‘tennis mom’.

The OED says the word ‘superbrat’ was ‘famously applied to the tennis player John McEnroe by the British press in response to outbursts on court.’

While ‘continental grip’ refers to a specific racket grip and a ‘tennis mom’ – English spelling ‘British mum’ – describes an enthusiastic supporting mother.

According to the newly-released list, one word, first defined in 1556 by J Heywood in Dialogue Proverbs has received a dramatic modern update.

For more than 460 years, the word bareback concerned riding a horse without the aid of a saddle. However, now the OED has added the term can refer to sexual intercourse ‘without using a condom’.

Superbrat: With the Wimbledon tennis championship just a week away, more than 80 tennis related words and phrases have also made their way into the records, including ‘superbrat’, which the OED says was ‘famously applied to the tennis player John McEnroe (pictured) by the British press in response to outbursts on court’
