Word of Mouth is the twenty-first studio album by the English rock group the Kinks. «Do It Again» was released as a single from the album in 1985.

Information[edit]

The track «Living on a Thin Line» by Dave Davies was played three times in the 2001 episode «University» of the American TV show The Sopranos. According to producer Terence Winter on the DVD extras, it is the series’ most asked-about song. The song was also played in the final episode of the HBO series Vice Principals.

The song «Good Day» includes an allusion to the death of actress Diana Dors.

The song «Do It Again» was featured in the film Click (released in 2006), and in trailers that were promoting the film.^[5] It was also used in TV ad promotions for the 2013 edition of the Tour de France.

Three tracks («Going Solo», «Missing Persons», and «Sold Me Out») were repurposed for Kinks leader Ray Davies’ solo debut album, the soundtrack to his concurrently produced, self-directed film, Return to Waterloo.

Commercial performance[edit]

The album spent twenty weeks on the US Billboard album charts and reached its peak position of No. 57 in February 1985.^[6]

  Hits hard like it’s s’posed to and just like the 80′ but with more presence. Get one.

  A friend and I both purchased this lp on first day of release. (Tower Records in Phoenix) Both copies have Ghostbusters labels. Within a day all of the copies were gone. I suspect Tower Records sent them back. It took a week or two before it was back in stock again and I bought another copy with correct labels. I’ll have to check and see what plant pressed the Ghostbusters label version.

  I have this record but the labels on both sides are for the Ghost Busters soundtrack lol. Does anyone else have this?

  It’s a better album than you might expect, even though Erlewine trashed it in his retrospective AllMusic review. The opener «Do It Again» is my favourite late-career Kinks song. Aside from that, Word Of Mouth is a very good ’80s new wave/power pop album which would probably be better regarded if it didn’t carry the baggage of being a Kinks album. The band here is at the end of the hot streak they started with Sleepwalker and Misfits in the last ’70s. And let’s be honest, it was as good a renaissance as many of their peers (like The Who) had. Just enjoy the record for what it is: A great band still writing above-average songs. Plus, Dave’s contributions, both in songwriting and soloing, are significant.

  Does anyone Else’s copy of this have a double thickness disc (appears to be 2 Discs stuck together)?

  In my opinion, Word of Mouth is the greatest Kinks LP from their later years.
