WHAT DOES PAPER MONEY MEAN IN ENGLISH?

paper money

Banknote

A banknote is a type of negotiable instrument known as a promissory note, made by a bank, payable to the bearer on demand. When banknotes were first introduced, they were, in effect, a promise to pay the bearer in coins, but gradually became a substitute for the coins and a form of money in their own right. Banknotes were originally issued by commercial banks, but since their general acceptance as a form of money, most countries have assigned the responsibility for issuing national banknotes to a central bank. National banknotes are legal tender, meaning that medium of payment is allowed by law or recognized by a legal system to be valid for meeting a financial obligation. Historically, banks sought to ensure that they could always pay customers in coins when they presented banknotes for payment. This practice of «backing» notes with something of substance is the basis for the history of central banks backing their currencies in gold or silver. Today, most national currencies have no backing in precious metals or commodities and have value only by fiat.

Paper Money in China

After dealing with commodity money for a long time, the people in China started to get tired from the weight of carrying metal coins around. Moreover, there started to be a shortage of certain metals. In the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) reign, many merchants started to keep their coins in a trustworthy agent’s custody.

In return, the agent recorded the number of coins submitted on a piece of paper which acted as a promissory note. The note could be used in trades and exchanged in return for coins from the agent.

Later on, the Song Dynasty saw the most earlier known appearances of paper notes backed by an authority. The dynasty issued paper money that had the backing of its administration and was named jiaozi. As the Chinese interacted with other cultures along the silk trail, other kingdoms and dynasties noticed the benefits of jiaozi and started adopting their own kind. With the changes in the dynasties, the money kept changing.

In December 1948, China saw its first renminbi (RMB), which translates to “people’s currency.” It was issued with the foundation of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC).  After the Civil War, the People’s Republic of China came into being, and the yuan earned itself the badge of being the only unified legal currency. Yuan comes in many denominations like the US denominations. The paper is made of the wood fiber.

Understanding Paper Money

The first recorded use of paper money was purported to be in the country of China during the 7th century A.D. as a means of reducing the need to carry heavy and cumbersome strings of metallic coins to conduct transactions. Similar to making a deposit at a modern bank, individuals would transfer their coins to a trustworthy party and then receive a note denoting how much money they had deposited. The note could then be redeemed for currency at a later date.

Example of Paper Money

In the U.S., paper money is considered fiat money. This means that it has no actual value except as an accepted medium of exchange. Before 1971, this was not the case; U.S. banknotes were backed by a certain amount of gold, which was dictated by the Federal Reserve.

The U.S. dollar has been the dominant reserve currency since the end of World War II. Prior to World War II, the British pound was the dominant reserve currency.

More than 350 million people around the world use the dollar as their main form of currency—and more than $17 trillion of economic activity is accounted for with U.S. paper money. U.S. paper money is the official currency in a number of countries and areas outside of the territorial United States. These countries include Ecuador, El Salvador, Zimbabwe, Timor-Leste, Micronesia, Palau, and The Marshall Islands. The dollar is also used in all U.S. territories, including Puerto Rico and Guam. Turks and Caicos and the British Virgin Islands, both British territories in the Caribbean, also use U.S. paper money as their currency.

There are also countries that regularly use the U.S. dollar alongside their own local currency, including Bahamas, Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis, Belize, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Liberia, as well as several Caribbean territories.

The euro is another form of paper money that is used in multiple countries. As of 2020, 19 of the 27 member states in the European Union (EU) use the euro as their official currency.

Special Considerations

While paper money is the most accepted medium of exchange, companies often issue shares of their own company to purchase other companies and reward their staff. Shares are units of ownership in a company that entitle the shareholder to an equal distribution in any profits. Of all accepted mediums of exchange, shares are closest to paper money because they can be exchanged on the open market for cash.

A rage for paper money, for an abolition of debts, for an equal division of property, or for any other improper or wicked project, will be less apt to pervade the whole body of the Union than a particular member of it; in the same proportion as such a malady is more likely to taint a particular county or district, than an entire State.

The fictional element of paper money referred to the text printed on every banknote issued by the Bank of England, «payable to the bearer on demand in gold.» As everyone knew that this promised exchange of paper for gold was neither realistic nor even possible, the words, or story, printed on the banknote functioned as a brief work of fiction, but the promissory phrase was also a legally binding contract, meaning that the Bank of England had been operating one rush-on-the-Bank away from insolvency for years.

Mihm points out that colonial North America was the world’s most tolerant society regarding paper money. Some even considered counterfeiting to have beneficial effects, a view which persisted well into the nineteenth century.

When teaching an intermediate class recently, I was surprised to find that very few of the students (who were from various parts of the world) knew how to say prices, so this blog will explain this very basic function and also look at some other vocabulary connected with money.

First, the prices. There is more than one correct way to say a price, but the most common one is simply to say the number of pounds followed by the number of pence (or the number of dollars followed by the number of cents):

£3.50 ‘Three fifty’

$4.95 ‘Four ninety five’

Sometimes we also say the words pounds, pence, dollars, or cents in the price. There is no difference, and neither way is better or worse. In American English, if you use these words, you have to say and in the middle. In British English, you can say and or leave it out:

£1.45 ‘One pound and forty five pence’ or ‘One pound forty five pence’

$20.80 ‘Twenty dollars and eighty cents’

If the price is an exact number of pounds or dollars, you must use those words:

£50.00 ‘Fifty pounds’

$760.00 ‘Seven hundred and sixty dollars’

We often say a instead of one before prices of £100, £1,000, etc. and also any price from £100 – £199:

£1,000,000 ‘a million pounds’ or ‘one million pounds’

$134 ‘a hundred and thirty four dollars’ or ‘one hundred and thirty four dollars’

If a British price is less than a pound, we can pronounce it in two ways:

50p ‘Fifty pence’ ‘Fifty pee’

For an American price less than a dollar, use cents.

If you are in Britain, you should also be aware that we often use informal words for money. For instance, we say quid instead of pound: I spent fifty quid on food today.

The usual British word for paper money is note. However, we often call a five pound note a fiver and a ten pound note a tenner. There is no common informal word for a twenty pound note.

To talk about coins, we often use the word piece, or more informally bit: a fifty/twenty pence piece

Americans call paper money bills, and a 10 cent piece is called a dime.

One final word of warning: do not – as my students tried to do – use the word ‘point’ when you are saying a price such as £2.30 – that is only for mathematics!
