The Birthday Girl (episode) is episode 9a of Season 1 of WordGirl.

Summary

Becky and her friend Violet meet Eileen, a.k.a. The Birthday Girl, who enlarges and turns green whenever she doesn’t get her way. When Eileen steals Huggy out of greed, WordGirl must use Violet’s help to teach The Birthday Girl to be generous in order to rescue him. However, in their quest to find Huggy and his captor, they seem to be exaggerating to a lot of busy people.

Plot

Becky and Violet are flying their kites in the park. When the wind blows on Violet’s kite dragging her with it, they meet a ten year old girl named Eileen. When she sees Violet’s kite, she asks her if she could fly it, and Violet lets her. Eileen tells Violet and Becky that today is her birthday and she shows her her necklace. However, when Violet then asks Eileen if she can have her kite back, she tells her «no», as she states it’s now her kite since Violet gave it to her for her birthday. Eileen then asks Violet if she could have it, saying «pwetty pwease» instead of «pretty please» (which Becky tries to correct her into saying) and Violet decides to let her telling her «Happy Birthday». Eileen thanks Violet and tells her she’s her bestest «fwend» ever. Eileen then sees a charm bracelet on her arm and asks if she can have it too, however, as soon as she asks her, Violet tells her «no». As soon as Violet says it to her, she then says, «mine, mine, mine!» and she grows an inch right in front of Violet and Becky. Just as Eileen was about to say «I want that bwacelet!», she then sees Bob and starts wanting him. Becky tries to tell Eileen that she can’t have her pet monkey and Violet stands up to her telling Eileen to back off, which is something Becky never seen Violet like before. Eileen then gets very mad saying «that monkey» is hers and she says, «Mine, mine, mine, MINE!» and she grows to the size of a house and her skin turns green and she shoves Becky and Violet out of the way and grabs Bob and takes him with her. Becky then tells Violet they should split up and Violet hurries off and Becky transforms into WordGirl to rescue her monkey sidekick.

At Eileen’s house, Eileen gives Bob cookies and she decides to let them play tea party together. Eileen gives Bob a dress to wear. Bob refuses to wear it, but Eileen tells him she’ll give him more cookies if he does, so Bob decides to wear it. While Eileen was gone, Bob tries to escape, but comes back into the room when he hears her saying she’s got chocolate chip cookies. So Bob puts on the dress Eileen gives him and starts enjoying the cookies she gives him.

At the Ye Olde Fancy Shmancy Jewelry Shoppe, Violet asks Reginald if he’d seen Eileen, when WordGirl comes in, making Violet excited to see her. WordGirl asks Violet if she had any luck, but see tells her she couldn’t find Eileen and Bob anywhere. WordGirl then tells Reginald that they say that a diamond on his desk is as big as an elephant, they’re exaggerating, it’s a big diamond, but not as big as an elephant. Reginald however refuses to believe there is a house-sized ten year old girl running around Fair City and asks them to leave if they’re not going to buy anything. So Violet leaves the store dragging WordGirl with her to set off to find Eileen.

Back at Eileen’s house, Eileen shows Bob gold stars she got on her school papers, which is something she loves. Eileen then accidentally pours tea onto Bob’s dress making a stain on it. Eileen apologizes to Bob for it and she takes him with her to the Debbie’s Darling Dresses to get him a brand new one.

Meanwhile, WordGirl was flying while carrying Violet, when she suddenly spots a trail of giant footprints, so WordGirl and Violet follow it. They head into Eileen’s house and look in her room. They find the dress Bob was wearing and see the tea stain on it, so Violet thinks they went off to get a new dress for Bob. WordGirl sees the dress is from Debbie’s Darling Dresses, which is she and Violet’s favorite store, so they head off there.
At Debbie’s Darling Dresses, Eileen gives Bob a new dress, but he refuses to put it on. When Eileen tells Bob to put it on, he just grabs the dress and drops it on the floor. Eileen then angrily states that she always gets her way and she again says, «Mine, Mine, MINE!» and she grows even more bigger and turns more greener. This forces Bob to put on the dress for Eileen. After Bob puts on the dress, he looks in a mirror and Eileen tells him he looks so pretty.

Eileen carrying Bob in her hand then heads back to her house to get back to their tea party. But just as Eileen was about to head back to her house with Bob, she suddenly sees a giant gold star on the top of a building. She loves the gold star finding it beautiful and she says, «And it’s going to be mine, mine, Mine, Mine, MIIINNE!», and she grows more bigger and turns more greener. Eileen now a green giant puts Bob in her dress pocket and walks towards the building with the gold star on it’s roof, when WordGirl and Violet arrive. Violet spots Eileen and she and WordGirl see her climbing the building to get gold star on top. WordGirl then lands on the building’s roof and tells Violet to distract Eileen while she zoom in to rescue Bob. As WordGirl flew around Eileen, she tries to grab her. Eileen then finally reaches the top of the building as Violet asks her if she’d like to have her charm bracelet, saying in an echoing voice, «Gold star mine! GOLD STAR MINE!».

Just as WordGirl was about to reach Bob, Eileen grabs her in her hand. Violet gets horrified by this and wonders what to do. Violet then suddenly has an idea and she calls out to Eileen telling her she’s her bestest friends in the whole wide world. When Eileen hears her say this, she gets happy and asks Violet if she’s really one of he bestest «fwends», and Violet tells her she is. When Eileen asks what do bestest friends do, Violet tells her they give each others presents. Eileen then decides to give Violet a present and she takes off her necklace and gives to her. As soon as she does, Eileen shrinks back down to her normal size and her skin turns back to tan. Eileen and Bob then start to fall down the building, but WordGirl swoops down and saves them and puts them on the building’s roof. Violet then sees that she guessed right, since being greedy made Eileen get bigger, she figures if she was generous, then she’d shrink, as generous means to be very giving, which the exact opposite of greedy. WordGirl then tells Violet she did a great job and Violet wishes that Becky were with them to see what she just did, stating that she won’t believe what she just did, but WordGirl tells her that she has a feeling she will. It was now time for WordGirl to go and tells Violet it was great teaming up with her and WordGirl then leaves.

As soon as WordGirl left, Becky shows up on the building’s roof and Violet asks her where has she been, which Becky states to her «around town». Violet then tells Becky that she and WordGirl teamed up together to rescue Bob and Becky gets happy to see Bob again. Becky then tells Eileen that she hoped she learned her lesson, as she couldn’t just go around taking people’s monkeys or any of their other stuff. Eileen then tells Becky that she did «wearn» her «wesson», and Becky corrects her saying she «learned» her «lesson». Eileen then tells Becky, Violet and Bob she must now go home and get some sleep cause tomorrow’s her birthday. Becky gets confused by this saying that she thought today was her birthday. Eileen tells her it is and so is tomorrow and she tells them her mommy told her that everyday is her birthday and she says, «Bye bye» to them and she heads home, leaving Becky, Violet and Bob with shocked looks on their faces.

Original airdate: December 8th, 2007

The Birthday Girl: WordGirl meets the Birthday Girl — a spoiled brat who enlarges when she doesn’t get her way. This part’s associated vocabulary words are «generous» and «exaggerate».

Granny-Sitter: Granny May answers an ad to be the Botsfords’ new babysitter. This part’s associated vocabulary words are «investigate» and «accelerate».

«The Birthday Girl» contains the following tropes:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: The store Eileen gets her dresses from is called Debbie’s Darling Dresses.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Reginald finds the idea of a house-sized ten-year-old girl running around to be farfetched, even though giant robots regularly cause havoc in the city and he’s been robbed more than once by a man with the power to summon meat products from thin air.
  • Dragged by the Collar: After Reginald proves to be of no help in Violet and WordGirl’s hunt for Eileen, the angry Violet drags a slightly stunned WordGirl away by the arm to continue their quest.
  • The Dreaded Pretend Tea-Party: Eileen throws one with Bob as the unwilling guest after she kidnaps him. He’s happy about the cookies she’s serving, but less so about the pink, frilly dress she makes him wear.
  • Food as Bribe: Bob very reluctantly puts on the pink dress Eileen wants him to wear at her tea party in exchange for a plate of chocolate chip cookies.
  • «King Kong» Climb: The roles are reversed as Eileen, in her giant green form, climbs a tower with Bob the monkey in her hand. A witness lampshades this, asking if it should be the monkey holding the girl.
  • Ludicrous Precision: By smelling the tea in Bob’s abandoned coffee cup, WordGirl is somehow able to tell that it’s been cold for 32 minutes and 16 seconds.
  • Medium Awareness: When Violet asks how WordGirl knew she was at the jewelry store, WordGirl replies that it was thanks to her super hearing. And that they need to keep the story moving.
  • Reflective Eyes: When Eileen sees a giant gold star on a building, it gets reflected in her eyes, making them look like star-shaped Wingding Eyes.
  • Running Gag: Becky/WordGirl getting more and more frustrated at Eileen’s Elmuh Fudd Syndwome.

«Granny-Sitter» contains the following tropes:

  • Ambiguous Syntax: Mr. and Mrs. Botsford are going to see the cat art exhibit at the museum. When Becky notes that that’s a lot of pictures of cats, Mrs. Botsford replies that it’s not paintings of cats, it’s paintings by cats.
  • Angry Fist-Shake: Granny May does this gesture as she’s being arrested.
  • Brick Joke: The dummy that Granny May sets up in the Botsford residence to cover for her going to commit crimes comes back at the end of the episode, where Mr. Botsford mistakes it for the real deal and tries to pay it for the babysitting job.
  • Does This Make Me Look Fat?: Bob asks this about the dummy of himself he’s inflating. Considering the dummies are a good deal rounder than the originals, he’s not entirely off.
  • Dramatic Drop: Becky drops the book she’s holding when she finds out that Granny May is going to be her babysitter.
  • Loud Gulp: Bob loudly swallows the grapes he’s eating when he first finds out that Granny May is the Botsfords’ babysitter.
  • Not-So-Innocent Whistle: Mr. Botsford does this when he accidentally knocks over Granny May’s inflatable dummy (which he thinks is the real thing).
  • The Quiet Game: When a bored TJ says through the wall that he wants to play a game with Becky, she suggests this so she can turn into WordGirl and fly away to stop Granny May without him suspecting anything.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: When Becky and TJ have been sent to their rooms for a third time by Granny May:

    TJ: Becky? I’m. Still. Bored.

  • Rule of Three: After sending the children she’s babysitting to bed, Granny May makes three different attempts at stealing the Maz-o-car, being stopped by WordGirl each time. WordGirl finally apprehends her at the third attempt. WordGirl also has to come up with a new excuse so TJ won’t notice her leaving all three times.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Subverted. The solid gold Maz-o-racer car doesn’t move at all, which the driver says is because all the gold is weighing it down. Then it turns out the emergency brake is on. Once he releases the brake, the car takes off like any other sports car.
  • We Will Meet Again: When Granny May is arrested at the end of the episode.

Granny May: You may have gotten me this time, WordGirl, but I’ll be back!
