New York, or the Big Apple, as the Americans often call it, is the largest city in the USA and in the whole world. It stands in the mouth of the Hudson River. The people of New York City (NYC) live within five boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Manhattan Island, the oldest part of the city, was bought from the Native Americans for the amount of goods worth $ 26. Now it is one of the busiest financial and cultural centre in the world, offering the visitors a unique collection o f experiences and at­tractions. There is a wide choice of internationally acclaimed theatres, restaurants and museums, historic parks and churches. Manhattan is also a district o f business and finance. In Wall Street there are offices of large companies and banks, as well as New York Stock Exchange, which dominates the business life o f the whole world. New York is an international city. On the map of Manhattan one can find Little Italy with the Italian restaurants and its own way of life, Brighton Beach, where the immigrants from the former Soviet Union live and Chinatown, inhabited by the Chinese. NY is also famous for its fine department stores and boutiques. In the evening you can enjoy one of its many nightclubs, the ballet, opera, a show or concert. Broadway is the centre of nightlife. It is the longest street in New York with many sights. The best way to go around NY is on foot. One word applies to driving your own car in Manhattan: don’t! Streets are jammed and the parking is scarce and astronomically expensive. However, NYC is a paradise for walkers, who enjoy the finest window shopping and peo­ple-watching. When proper caution is exercised, most areas are safe. It is best to use well-lighted, busy streets at night. You can also travel anywhere you want by subway and buses. Subway, though rather Inattractive and not so well organized as in Moscow, runs 24 hours a day. The fare is $ 1.50 for a single journey, payable with tokens. Free bus and subway system maps are available from hotels, tourist information cen­tres and subway stations. However one gets around New York, it is important to know some basic geography: Fifth Avenue divides the city between East and West. Street numbers begin at Fifth Avenue, so Two W. (west) 57th Street is just a few steps to the west of the Fifth Avenue, while Two E. (east) 219 57th Street is just to the east. Most streets in Manhattan are one-way. With a few exceptions, traffic on even-numbered streets travels east, and traffic on odd-numbered streets travels west. To New Yorkers, “downtown” does not connote the city centre. Rather, “downtown” simply means “south” and “uptown” means “north”. Thousands o f tourists come to New York every day to see the Statue of Liberty, which is situated on Liberty Island and is a symbol o f Amer­ican democracy. It has a torch of Freedom in her right hand. New York is famous for its skyscrapers, among which are the Chrys­ler Building and the Empire State Building. The unprecedented terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 disguised the face o f New York. Two twin towers, which used to form the World Trade Centre, were destroyed as the result o f the planes crash. This was the tragic day for the people o f the USA and for the whole world. Two towers were in ruins in the matter o f minutes. The life of the big city was paralyzed completely for more than a month. Now the WTC is under reconstruction

New York is the largest city in the United States. More than 8 million people live there. New York has very tall buildings like the World Trade Centre and the Empire State Building. New York is the biggest port in the world. Thousands of ships come to the port of New York each year. It has Macy’s, one of the biggest stores in the world. New York also has the largest lady in the world — the Statue of Liberty.

New York is a very cosmopolitan city. People from many countries came to live here. Three-quarters or 75 percent of the people of New York City belong to each of the five groups: the Afro-Americans, the Jews, the Italians, the Puerto Ricans, and the Irish. The other quarter, or 25 per cent, comes from other countries of the world.

New York City is the center of culture in the United States. It has the finest museums and best art galleries in the country. If you want to see a play, there are many theatres you can go to on Broadway. The street called Broadway is the center of theatre life in the United States.

People call New York City the “Big Apple”. Jazz musicians in the 1920s gave New York this name. Today New York is still the US center of art and business.

Why is New York City Called The Big Apple?

New York City has been called many things—“The Great American Melting Pot,” “Gotham,” “The City that Never Sleeps”—but its most famous nickname is “The Big Apple.” So just where did this now-ubiquitous moniker originate?

MAKING A BIG APPLE

Over the years, there have been many theories about how New York City came to be called “The Big Apple.” Some say it comes from the former well-to-do families who sold apples on the city’s streets to make ends meet during the Great Depression. Another account posits that the term comes from a famous 19th-century brothel madam named Eve, whose girls were cheekily referred to as her “Big Apples.” But the nickname actually springs from a catchphrase used in the 1920s by The Morning Telegraph sports writer John J. Fitz Gerald in his horse racing column, “Around the Big Apple.” Beginning on February 18, 1924, he began every column with the header, “The Big Apple. The dream of every lad that ever threw a leg over a thoroughbred and the goal of all horsemen. There’s only one Big Apple. That’s New York.”

At the time, the jockeys and trainers of smaller horses were said to want to make a “Big Apple,» which was their term for the big money prizes at larger races in and around New York City.

Fitz Gerald reportedly first heard «The Big Apple» used to describe New York’s racetracks by two African American stable hands at the famed New Orleans Fair Grounds, as he explained in his inaugural «Around the Big Apple» column: “Two dusky stable hands were leading a pair of thoroughbreds around the ‘cooling rings’ of adjoining stables at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans and engaging in desultory conversation. ‘Where y’all goin’ from here?’ queried one. ‘From here we’re headin’ for The Big Apple,’ proudly replied the other. ‘Well, you’d better fatten up them skinners or all you’ll get from the apple will be the core,’ was the quick rejoinder.” Fitz Gerald nabbed the colloquialism for his column, where it quickly took off.

CATCHING ON

Once the term entered the vocabularies of society up north, its popularity slowly spread outside of the horseracing context, and everything from nightclubs in Harlem to hit songs and dances about the city were named after “The Big Apple.” Most notably, New York jazz musicians in the 1930s—who had a habit of using the nickname to reference their hometown in their songs—helped the nickname spread beyond the northeast.

Throughout the mid-20th century, it remained New York City’s nickname until it was officially adopted by the city in the 1970s. The New York Convention & Visitors Bureau hoped that using the moniker would brighten the image of an economically downtrodden and crime-ridden city in decline and revive the tourist economy. In 1997, to give Fitz Gerald his (somewhat unjust) due, then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani signed legislation naming the corner where Fitz Gerald and his family lived at West 54th Street and Broadway between 1934 and 1963 “Big Apple Corner.”
