Nordine is far better known for his voiceover work than for his albums, but those who do know the albums know the Word Jazz series best. This 1990 compilation gathers together a good selection of the earlier material, recorded between 1957 and 1960. It has a beatnik sensibility, with rhythmic poetic lines underpinned by hip cool jazz backing. It would be a fruitless pairing if it wasn’t for two key things: First, Nordine’s voice is amazing, polished by years of professional work behind the microphone. Secondly, Nordine’s storytelling is solid, and you find yourself being pulled into his world despite the offbeat nature of the material. When you are offered a tour of his brain, as in the CD-only «Looks Like It’s Going to Rain,» you’re glad for the chance to go. A great overview of the crucial formative years.

Even if you aren’t sure who Ken Nordine is, you have heard his voice in a variety of contexts from NPR to innumerable commercials. «The Best of Word Jazz, Vol. 1» is an early album of musings from the late 1950s ranging from the lighthearted and ridiculous «My Baby» to the dark «Confessions Of 349-18-5171.» Exploring a whole range of emotions with his unbelievable baritone unleashed with occasional instrumental accompaniment on every subject under the sun, this CD never ceases to entertain. My personal favorites are «The Vidiot,» a satirical critique of addiction to television (if only he knew: this was long before video games,) «Bury-It-Yourself Time Capsules,» which makes an amusing but quirky commentary on people’s personal histories, and the jazzy, hilarious, and supremely peculiar opinion on aesthetics «I Used To Think My Right Hand Was Uglier Than My Left.»
This is a great CD and serves as an excellent introduction to the entire genre of word jazz that Nordine created. While «Colors» is my all-time favorite Nordine album, this one is not as one-dimensional, and will please word jazz aficionados regardless of their previous conscious knowledge of Nordine’s works.
Enjoy Nordine’s treatise on sitting-down showers in «Down the Drain» («I lie there and let the shower rave on the nape of my neck, right there where the hypothalamus is and the medulla oblongata…») and relax to the sonorous tones of his deep voice. It’s utterly relaxing if you can stop yourself from laughing. Highly recommended!

The first Ken Nordine word jazz album I got, and still one of my favorites..a great all-around introduction to what the master inventor and creator of this art form does; amazing tracks of creativity and musical genius, that transport you to another place and time. Wonderful musicians, and the captivating baritone voice of the incomparable Nordine make this a must-have collection of his greats.

I’d never heard of this before. I love Ken Nordine. My hubby is 21years older than I & hooked my on this word jazz. It reminds my of the time frame of the phrase—«Cool, Daady-O, cool». A bunch of «hip cats» sitting around wagging their heads and snapping their fingers to this type of music. Definitely worth a listen to see if you might like it.

I can see this style of sound coming back in, say, commercials perhaps first and then people finding out how to buy it. You just gotta hear it.

I used to listen to Word Jazz and shows they had on NPR, like Ear Play. It is a shame they don’t do those anymore. This is a great album.

I’d never heard of Ken Nordine until just recently. Someone online suggested I give him a listen, so I bought this CD. It’s a bunch of spoken word pieces recited by Ken Nordine, some with sound effects and music. Some of it’s funny, and some just stupid. The language is interesting, though, since much of it is from the beat subculture of the 60s. You don’t hear people talk like that anymore except in TV reruns. Or on Ken Nordine’s CD.

I love Ken Nordine. Excellent to listen to while cooking up some dinner. I recommend this to any fans of hip spoken word accompanied with some excellent jazz music.
