The Australian Tourism Office employs a new caretaker twice a year.

The Best Job in the World

Have you ever heard of the Great Barrier Reef? It is the world’s largest coral reef system along the eastern coast of Australia. In February 2009 an extraordinary position was advertised by the Australian Tourism Office. The advertisement ran that the Great Barrier Reef needed a caretaker for half a year. It was for a special person who would look after the Reef.

The job offered a large salary, free accommodation in a luxury villa, and transportation there and around the islands. All expenses would be paid: the winner wouldn’t need to spend any extra money on anything.

The job’s duties were pretty simple. You could only dream of such requirements. First, the person had to speak English and swim well. Second, on the island his responsibility included writing a weekly Internet blog. That’s right, weekly, not even daily! The job description also required the successful applicant to explore the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, swim, make friends with the locals and generally enjoy the tropical climate and lifestyle. A real dream!

Within the first 2 days of the contest, the tourism office received more than seven thousand online applications. All told, 34,000 people of all different nationalities applied. Each made and presented a 60-second video resume. They had to be creative and they were. In the end 16 people were chosen, who flew to Australia for the final selection. The candidates were interviewed and the winner was Ben Southall from the UK.

Ben greatly enjoyed the dream job he had got. He realised that people knew very little about planet earth and its treasures. Living in big cities, they forgot how important the flora and fauna of this world were. Every time Ben went outdoors, he could discover something new. “Every time I dived or went underwater, I forgot about all the troubles above water and concentrated on living in the moment. It was a good way to clean the mind and build respect for the natural world,” Ben said.

Ben’s life on the island was not just fun. It was very busy, busier than most people imagined, and certainly busier than Ben himself had imagined. He worked seven days a week and up to 19 hours a day. The Best Job included travelling to over 60 islands of the Reef almost every day. It was not just looking after the Reef, Ben had a lot of meetings, press conferences and interviews. He was getting a lot of attention all the time and he couldn’t get away from it. That was probably the hardest part of the job.

Moreover, any adventure has a certain degree of risk. Swimming and diving on the Great Barrier Reef was not different. Ben had to deal with whales, sharksand other huge sea creatures. Surprisingly, the most dangerous thing was a small jellyfish about the size of a little finger. It’s considered to be extremely poisonous and Ben was stung by it. He had to spend a couple of days in hospital but luckily recovered after a course of antibiotics.

Ben often says that the project has taught him a few valuable lessons. Working with the Internet is one of those jobs you can do 24 hours a day. Ben realised it was hard to separate life and work, but this he had to do. He also said: “I’ve learned that we get one life on earth so we have to use it. There’ll always be other countries to visit, other people to meet and other adventures to meet. This is what I wish to do. I’m planning to go to Asia in a few years time”.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 2009, Tourism Queensland promoted the Great Barrier Reef as a global tourism destination with a website encouraging people worldwide to apply for The Best Job In The World, to be a «Caretaker of the Islands» to «house-sit» the islands of the Great Barrier Reef for half a year, based on Hamilton Island.[1][2][3][4]
The winner was Ben Southall,
who beat over 34 thousand candidates.

Benefits[edit]

Job benefits included a large salary, free lodging in a multi million-dollar villa, and transportation there and around the islands. The application process required a web video to be submitted, available publicly for consideration for the position. The job duties listed were primarily publicity-related with web videos, blogging, and photo diaries. The submission web site crashed two days following the launch of the campaign, from excessive visits and application video uploading.[5]

Public interest[edit]

Interest continued for months. On 11 February 2009, Christopher Grima jumped off the South Causeway Bridge in Fort Pierce in Florida. The police report said that he «wanted to capture a video of himself jumping off the bridge, to gain attention of the recruiters» for this job. He quickly received a summons for breach of the peace / disorderly conduct.[6][7] More marketing-savvy applicants created blogs and established Facebook groups to create buzz about themselves. Two hoaxes also fueled interest. Tourism Queensland invested US$1m in the campaign and generated US$70m of global publicity just one month after the campaign’s launch.[8]

Applicants[edit]

Over 35,000 applications were received from over 200 countries, and whittled down to 16 finalists (including one chosen by an on-line vote). Finalists came from Australia (two), United States (two), United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand, Taiwan, India, China, Japan, France and South Korea. Ten were male and their ages ranged from 20 to 39. The candidates were interviewed on the island starting 3 May 2009. The United Kingdom finalist Ben Southall, 34, a charity fundraiser and ostrich-rider from Petersfield, Hampshire, UK, was appointed as the new caretaker of the island on 6 May 2009.[9][10]

The competition attracted 34,684 entries and after four months, Ben Southall was announced the winner of the Best Job in the World

Publicity[edit]

By the campaign’s end, it has generated more than $200 million in global publicity value for Tourism Queensland.[11] Brisbane advertising agency CumminsNitro [1] was awarded three top awards at the Cannes International Advertising Festival.[12][13][14] The campaign was acknowledged as very successful.[15] BBC Television made a one-hour documentary about the final stages of the campaign which was directed by Agnieszka Piotrowska. Narrated by Toby Stephens, the film was broadcast on 2 July 2009 on BBC1 at 9pm, achieving the highest viewing figures for the whole week.

Winner[edit]

The winner was Ben Southall, from the United Kingdom. In the last week of his paradise job, he was stung by an Irukandji jellyfish. Although lethal cases are known, he made a full recovery.[16]

The competition attracted 34,684 entries and after four months, Ben Southall was announced the winner of the Best Job in the World

Southall is now an Ambassador of Queensland Tourism and took residency in Queensland after the six-month period on the island had ended. Since then Ben has established himself as an adventure advocate in Australia taking on extreme adventures around the world including a 1600 km kayak along the Great Barrier Reef in 2011, running a number of marathons around the country. He set a world record to climb the tallest mountain in each Australian state (8) in the shortest ever time in April 2013 — the Aussie 8 expedition took 8 days. His website follows his adventures around the planet.

In 2008 Southall circumnavigated Africa in a Land Rover, known as Colonel Mustard, covering 65,000 km. He climbed the five highest mountains on the continent and ran five marathons in the year raising $50,000 (AUS) for charity.

He married Sophee McPhee in November 2012 back on Hamilton Island where he lived as the Caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef.

In 2010 the advertising campaign was awarded two prestigious D&AD Black Pencil Awards.[17]

Briton lands ‘world’s best job’ as caretaker of Australian island

Ben Southall beats almost 35,000 applicants from around world to land six-month contract on Great Barrier Reef island.

A British charity worker today landed what has been described as the “best job in the world” when he was awarded a A$150,000 (£73,000) contract to serve as the caretaker of a tropical Australian island.

Ben Southall, 34, staved off competition from almost 35,000 worldwide applicants to secure the post. He now has the chance to swim, explore and relax on Hamilton island, in the Great Barrier Reef, for six months while writing a blog to promote the area.

Southall won the six-month job after spending three days swimming, snorkelling, diving and lounging with 15 other finalists under the close scrutiny of Queensland Tourism officials who psychometrically tested the candidates. The finalists also had to demonstrate their blogging abilities and take swimming tests.

“I hope I can sell the reef as much as everybody is expecting,” said Southall today before being whisked away for dozens of interviews with local and international media.

In his 60-second video application Southall was seen riding an ostrich, running a marathon, trekking through Africa and kissing a giraffe. He described himself as “the adventurous, crazy energetic one”.

But today Queensland Tourism’s executive director, Steve McRoberts, balked at the description. “I think crazy is a bit heavy,” McRoberts said, adding that Southall’s self-motivation was one of his most impressive qualities.

“He’s a level-headed, well-grounded bloke,” McRoberts said of Southall, who told the Guardian in March, when he was chosen as a finalist, that he planned to win by just being himself.

But he appeared stunned by his own success. “Wow … to all of the candidates that stand behind me – every one there is an absolute winner,” he said.

The job is part of a A$1.7m tourism campaign to publicise north-eastern Queensland. With Queensland Tourism claiming to generate about A$100m in publicity with the competition so far, the state’s premier, Anna Bligh, flew to Hamilton island to make the announcement.

It was the “most successful tourism marketing campaign in history”, Bligh said.

He presented Southall with a dive suit and flippers and urged him to wear them every day while the 15 other candidates, who included students, journalists, TV presenters, photographers, a receptionist, radio DJ, teacher, and an actor, hugged him and cheered.

When Southall begins the job, he will travel throughout the Great Barrier Reef, writing blogs and being interviewed by the media. The rest of the time he will relax in a three-bedroom luxury villa and drive a buggy to explore the island.

The contest for the dream job attracted some controversy after being announced in January. Its website crashed due to a deluge of visitors, angering many hopefuls who could not lodge their video applications.

One finalist was ousted after it was revealed she had connections to the adult entertainment industry, and a prankster identifying himself as Osama bin Laden posted a YouTube video saying why he was the best man for the job.

Southall plans to bring his Canadian girlfriend with him to the island, when he starts work on July1.
