Looking for a fun way to teach the AN Word Family? Today, I’m sharing a FREE reader and other resources for the AN Word Family from Unit 1 of Learn to Read. This the third short a word word family reader from Unit 1 of Learn to Read.

AN Word Family Reader & Activities
For each lesson, we do a few word family and sight word activities before she even reads the reader for the week. This helps to introduce the sight words and word family pattern.
Our rainbow roll & write is a good example of one of the ways she is introduced to the two new sight words. {If your child needs to review some of the words from Reading the Alphabet that are in the readers, check out my free rainbow write set for those 26 sight words.}
To introduce our word family words, one of the activities she has lots of success with are our word family puzzles. We don’t just use the puzzles one time either. On our 2nd day, I added some of our short a word family puzzles from the AT Family and AD Family to give her an extra challenge. {These are all free to download.}
Before she reads, we often go through the book and look for the word family pattern. This time, we underlined them on each page, like you see in the first image of this post, but we don’t always do this.
Another fun activity that we do later in the week is our Roll, Read, & Find. This time, she used our dot paint markers and dotted the words instead of tracing them. I had planned for her to trace them {to sneak in some handwriting practice}, but being flexible as a teacher sometimes trumps the best-planned lessons! Amen?
*I’m often asked how to assemble the books. I walk you through it a bit here. Once the books’ pages are in order, I use a long-armed stapler to make it look more like a “real” book.
More AN Word Family Activities
All of the activities shared below are from my Learn to Read Unit 1 {Short a} Pack which can be purchased at my shop or at my Teachers Pay Teachers Store.
In each pack, there are sight word cards with review words as well as new words. One of the easiest activities ever is to simply let her build them with magnetic letters.
She loves doing the sight word maze, too. Often, she’ll do them with Power Magnets first.
Then, on the same day {or another day}, she’ll do them with dot paint. These are challenging for her and I love that she really has to focus on the letters of each sight word in order to get through the maze correctly.
There are several different activities to choose from with the AN word family. One day, I printed out the AN word family playdough mat for her to work on. It helps to slip this one into a plastic sleeve protector first. The student says the word, spells the word with playdough, then writes the word with dry erase marker.
One of the last activities we do during the week is the If I Can Spell… because it really stretches her ear for word family words and beginning sounds. Together, we go through the beginning sound chart {free to download on my blog} and blend the onset and word family together to make words. We write the real words down, but it’s fun to make silly words, too!
*Note that all download links EXPIRE IN 5 DAYS. Please download and save to your computer right away! Please do not use hotmail or aol email addresses, as these older email servers cannot support the download links.
Purchase at my Teachers Pay Teachers Store.
