Such pastime as playing video games is gaining more and more popularity nowadays all over the world. There are numerous reasons for this and, first of all, playing computer games is the best way for many people to forget about their routine job and everyday problems they have to face in real life.

The first prototype of modern computer games was invented in 1947 at the moment there are a lot of companies focused on development and production of computer games. There are game designers and programmers, sound designers and musicians, graphic designers and producers. They are all called game developers. It takes a lot of effort and money to produce a game and it is a serious business.

Nowadays, when nearly everyone has PC or a notebook with the Internet connection, online games become more and more popular. Some of them imitate real life in many aspects, as the player can communicate with characters and other players, they can marry and sometimes even have children while there are still battles and guests for those who are not interested in starting relationship.

Being a wonderful way to relax and spend free time playing computer games may also become a serious problem when a person gets too addicted to it or obsessed with the world on the screen. Some people may consider real life too dull and boring, compared to the exciting adventures they have in the game, and it may even lead to associating oneself with the favorite character. Spending a lot of time in front of the screen may also cause problems with eyes and spine.

B. What’s for breakfast?                      F. The school
system

C. Mexican-American War                  G.

D. The City of Angels

1. Los Angeles is America’s second largest city.

Its name comes from the Spanish for “the City of Angels”, because the land was originally claimed for Spain by missionaries in 1781. It
became an American city in 1850 when California became a part of the United States after the Mexican-American War.

Approximately 3.5 million people live in Los Angeles. It is a popular place because of its pleasant semi-tropical climate and
beautiful Pacific coast. Almost everyone drives to work on the miles of
freeways that connect the different areas of this sprawling city. There are
about four
million private cars in Los Angeles, often backed up in long traffic jams. The
level of air pollution is one of the highest in the country.

Suburbs like Hollywood, the center of the movie
industry, and Beverly Hills, where famous actors and other celebrities live,
have also made Los Angeles a tourist attraction.

2. The expression “as American as
apple pie” means something that is typically American, but even apple pie came
from somewhere else. The only true American
foods are those that the Native Ameri
cans gave the first settlers,
including corn, squash, pumpkin, turkey, and buffalo. Roast
turkey, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie are still eaten at Thanksgiving.

Immigrants have brought all kinds of dishes with
them from their home countries. People
enjoy tasting new dishes and often exchange recipes with friends. A typical
family may eat tacos (originally from Mexico), pizza (from Italy),
or apple pie (from England). Steaks and hamburgers are popular, although for
health reasons many people eat less red meat than they used to. Fried chicken
is also a favourite, especially in the southern states.

Americans love desserts. The standard dessert is a
pie. You can have fruit pies made from
apple, peach, rhubarb, apricot, or cherry, or berry pies with blackberry, raspberry,
or blueberry.
A piece of a pie is often served with ice-cream.

3. People eat on the go because of busy work or social
schedules don’t have much time for cook
ing at home. Takeout
meals from restaurants, pizza parlors, and delicatessens (also called delis)
have become a regular part of everyday life. Food can be picked up at a
restaurant, or people call in orders by phone and the takeout meal is delivered
to their homes.

Ready-to-eat and instant processed foods that are
quick to prepare are very popular. TV
dinners are complete dinners on a tray that
you take from the freezer and heat up in the oven
or microwave. Snacks and junk food
like doughnuts, popcorn, cookies, or potato chips are also easy to eat.

4. The day starts with breakfast. During
the week this might be something quick: cereal with milk, a muffin or toast
with coffee, tea, milk, or juice to drink. On the weekends when people have
more time, breakfast might be pancakes, waffles, an omelet, or bacon and eggs.

Lunch at work or school is usually between 12 am
and 1 pm. Some people prefer to
bring their lunch from home. Tuna fish, sliced meat called cold cuts, or peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches are kids’ favorites. Most schools and some
businesses have cafeterias that serve lunch.

Dinner, the biggest meal
of the day, is generally at 6 or 7 pm. A typical dinner includes a hot
vegetable, a salad, meat or some kind of vegetable protein, and a potato or
pasta dish. Stew (meat cooked with vegetables) and soup are also favorite
dinner foods.

5. The word
“school” can mean anything from elementary school to university. Adults of any
age can study for a high school or college diploma, and many public schools
offer adult-education classes during the evening and on weekends.

All American children
have the right to thirteen years of free education at a public school.
Approximately 11 per cent of children go to private schools, because the class
size is smaller
or academic standards may be higher. Some
private schools offer religious teaching that is not avail
able in public
schools.

Each September, more than
fifty million students between the ages of five and seventeen start the new
school year. The first year is called kindergarten, and each of the following
years has
a grade number up to 12. Students attend classes for an average of five hours a
day, five days
a week Monday through Friday, and they have homework
assignments to complete after school and on the week
ends. The school
year ends in June.

Students are encouraged
to ask questions and discuss their ideas with their teacher and classmates.
This method works better in smaller classes (up to twenty-five students).

6. To
graduate from high school, students have to complete a course of study that
leads to
a diploma. Anybody who wants to go to college
must have a high school diploma and take the SAT (Scholas
tic Aptitude
Test). The SAT checks maths and
English-language skills through multiple-choice questions marked by computer.

A student starting high
school is called a freshman and becomes a sophomore in the second year.
Eleventh-grade students are called juniors, and twelfth-grade students are
seniors. There are eight classes a day, usually from 8 am to 3 pm.

Students take classes in
major subjects such as English, maths,
history, and science.
They must also take classes in physical
educa
tion and a foreign
language. Then they can usually choose
an elective in subjects like art
or music.

At the end of term
students get a grade of A, B, C, D, or F (fail) for each subject. Grades are
based on test scores, class participation, and class and homework assignments.
As they finish each class in a subject, students get a credit. When they have
enough of these, they can graduate.

Terrible news

“Where were you when you heard
that President Kennedy had been shot?”

This is a question that most
people who were alive at the time can answer. It is one of those moments that
they can remember clearly, and will never forget.

On the morning of
November 22, 1963, the President of the United States of America, John F.
Kennedy, arrived in Dallas, Texas, with his wife, Jacqueline, on an official
visit. It was a beautiful sunny day. At 11.50 am they left the airport at Love
Field, and crowds stood along the streets
of Dallas to watch the open-topped presiden
tial car go past. They waved and shouted their good wishes to
the young presi
dent and his lovely wife, while millions more watched on
television. In the same car were John Connally, Governor of Texas, his wife,
Nellie, and two Secret Service men.

“You can’t say Dallas doesn’t love you,” Mrs Connally told the Kennedys, as they listened
to the shouts and saw the smiling faces.

At 12.30 the car turned
from Houston Street into Elm Street. It was moving very slowly. One of the
buildings which had a view over Elm Street was the Texas Book Depository, a
large building full of schoolbooks.

Mr
Kennedy was waving at the crowds when there was the sound of a gun shot. The
presi
dent’s hand stopped moving and then, as a second shot was heard, went to his neck. There was a third (and perhaps
a fourth) shot, and his head was suddenly covered in blood. John Connally, who
had also been shot in the back by one of the bullets, fell to the floor of the
car.

The car immediately raced
away to Parkland Memorial Hospital, with Jacqueline Kennedy holding her husband’s
wounded head in her arms.

“Oh my God, they killed
my husband!” she cried.

The cry was echoed
through the crowd. “They’ve killed the president!”

And at one o’clock America
and the rest of the world heard the news that President John

Honest, Simple and True

After N. Kidd

In Amish communities, many modern things, like
TVs and computers, are nowhere to be seen.
That’s because Amish ______live by
a set of beliefs that’s more than a religion – it’s a sim
ple way of
life
centred around faith and family.

They even speak a language called Pennsylvania
Dutch, or Amish, which sounds like German.

FAMILY

Most Amish families make their _____ by
farming, and they won’t let technology into their barn or home.

LIVE

Amish families follow a
strict Christian religion that stresses  the ___________
of keeping
oneself separate from the modern world. They keep electricity out of their
homes, for example, because they don’t want TVs, radios, computers, and other
modern gadgets to change their simple way of life.

Their religion also stresses that the needs of
others are more important than your own. Amish kids learn a rhyme that helps
explain it:

I must be a Christian child,

Gentle, patient, meek, and mild;

Must be honest, simple, true

In my words and actions, too…

I must cheerfully obey,

Giving up my will and way.

IMPORTANT

Amish
women and girls wear plain dresses because patterned clothes are considered
______
. They also wear aprons and bonnets as
a sign of their respect for God.

If an Amish woman is
married, she wears a black bonnet. If she is single, she wears a white one.
And they never wear jewellery or make-up. Amish girls never cut their hair,
so brushing it is a job in
itself. They wear their hair in a bun on the back of the head and cover it
with a bonnet.

Men and boys wear
dark-coloured suits, plain shirts, suspenders and black or straw
broad-brimmed hats. Belts, sweaters, ties and gloves are forbidden.

MODEST

They do not have
moustaches, but they grow beards after they get married.

Amish boys and girls go
to public schools where the students are all Amish.

The teachers are
non-Amish, or, as the Amish call them_______.

ENGLAND

Though the children
speak Amish at home, they are expected to use English at school.

Their ______is like
most American kids’. But there’s one big difference: Amish children go to
school only for eight years. That’s because Amish parents say too much
education makes children too “worldly”, or sophisticated.

And they should be
honest, simple and true.

SCHOOL

That’s because Amish
parents say too much _____________makes children too “worldly,” or
sophisticated.

Halloween in America

Halloween is celebrated by nearly all American
children, and over 70 % of adults also
32_________ some Halloween activity. College
students and other young adults may attend
masquerade parties or Halloween parades. Many families carve pumpkins and
decorate the outside of their homes with the traditional Halloween symbols.
Businesses
33_______ the act, too. Store windows display
jack-o’-lanterns, scarecrows and witches. Servers in restaurants and
salespeople in supermarkets and bookstores are often in costumes. Many
nightclubs and bars encourage customers to come in costumes 34___________
prizes for the best disguises.

Part of the fun of Halloween is to
get scared out of your wits. This can easily be done by visiting a haunted
house. Supposedly, the spirits of dead people “live” in haunted houses. These
spirits try to scare away living residents or visitors so that the spirits can
enjoy their afterlife (which really means a life after death) in peace. Why do
spirits hate the living? The living always want to clean up and brighten their 35__________,
while ghosts and skeletons prefer dust, spiders, cobwebs, and darkness.

These days,
it’s hard to find a real haunted house. But every year shortly before
Halloween, many charities and communities create fake haunted houses. They hire
actors to dress up in scary costumes and hide inside. Customers pay a few dollars
each to walk through these places and have “ghosts” surprise them with a loud
“Boo!” and “skeletons” clang chains in their ears. Children usually love these
haunted houses, but sometimes their parents are scared to death!

For those who
have no haunted house nearby, another way to share a good scare is to go with
friends to see a horror movie in a theatre or rent one and watch it together on
Halloween night
(in a dark room, of course).

Most American children have a
wonderful, exciting day on Halloween. If Halloween 36_______ a schoolday, they sometimes bring their
costumes to school and spend the last few hours of the schoolday with spooks
instead of books.

After school and perhaps in the
evening, they go trick-or-treating. Often, there’s a party at
a friend’s home or at the local community centre. At most Halloween parties,
prizes are 37_____
the best costumes. Bobbing for apples,
telling fortunes, playing scary games, and snacking on cara
mel apples, candies, apple cider, and pumpkin pie are
all part of the fun. Some communities build a bon
fire, just as the Celts
did. Children may 38___________the

hot dogs or toasting marshmal

Halloween, which began hundreds of
years ago as an evening of terror, is now an occasion
of great fun.

for Ann she phoned three times…

Write a letter to Peter.

In your letter

– answer his questions;

– tell him about your attitude to the
problem of his classmate;

– ask 3 questions about Ann
and her new school.

Write 100–140 words.

Remember the rules of letter writing.

Раздел 5. УСТНАЯ ЧАСТЬ

Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your
friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you
want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text
silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5
minutes to read it.

Scientists say that in the future people will live
longer. With healthier lifestyles and better medical care the average
person will live to 90 or 100 instead of 70 and 75 like today. When the
human genome is decoded, we’ll probably live up to 150. Incurable diseases
will be cured and “bad” genes replaced.

But that’s tomorrow. And today, we continue to
stuff ourselves with fast food – chips and pizzas, hamburgers and hot dogs.
We are always in a hurry.

We have no time to enjoy a home-cooked dinner with
family and friends. We want to eat now and we want to eat fast.

What is tasty is not always healthy. Doctors say
that chips and pizzas are fattening, cola spoils our teeth and coffee
shortens our lives.

If we eat too much, we’ll become obese, and
obesity leads to heart disease, diabetes and other serious illnesses. But
the world today is getting fatter and fatter. America is the world’s leader
in obesity, but Europe is quickly catching up.

Task 2. Study the advertisement.

You are
considering visiting the city and now you’d like to get more information. In
1.5 minutes you are to ask five direct questions to find out the following:

1) dates for
departures;

2) hotel
facilities;

3) if breakfast is
included;

4) number of city
tours;

5) discounts;

You have 20
seconds to ask each question.

Task 3. Imagine that while travelling during your holidays you took some
photos. choose one photo to present to your friend.

You
will have to start speaking in 1,5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2
minutes (12–15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about:

– when you took
the photo;

– what/who is in
the photo;

– what is
happening;

– why you took the
photo;

– why you decided
to show the picture to your friend.

You
have to talk continuously, starting with: “I’ve chosen photo number …”.

Task 4. Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be
ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

– give a brief
description of the photos (action, location);

– say what the
pictures have in common;

– say in what way
the pictures are different;

– say which of the
concerts presented in the pictures you’d prefer;

– explain why.

You will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15

  1 HOW WE
KEPT MOTHER’S DAY (
After S. Leacock)

Speaker A

We
decided to have a special celebration of Mother’s Day. We thought it a fine
idea. It made us realise how much Mother had done for us for years, and all the
efforts and sacrifices that she had made for our sake.

So
we decided that we’d make it a great day, a holiday for all the family, and do
everything we could to make Mother happy. Father decided to take a holiday from
his office, so as to help in celebrating the day, and my sister Ann and I
stayed home from college classes, and Mary and my brother Will stayed home from
High School.

Speaker B

It
was our plan to make it a day just like Christmas or any big holiday, and so we
decided to decorate the house with flowers. We asked Mother to do it, because
she always does it.

The
two girls thought it would be a nice thing to dress in our best for such a big
occasion, and so they both got new hats. Father had bought silk ties for
himself and us boys. We were going to get

Mother a new hat too, but it turned out that she liked her
old hat better than a new one.

Speaker C

After
breakfast we decided that we would hire a motor car and take Mother for a
beautiful drive away into the country.

But
on the very morning of the day we changed the plan a little bit. We all felt
that it would be nicer to have a definite purpose. It turned out that Father
had just got a new rod the day before, and he said that Mother could use it if
she wanted to: in fact, he said it was practically for her, only Mother said
she would rather watch him fish than fish herself.

Speaker D

So
we got everything arranged for the trip. Mother cut up some sandwiches and
packed all up in a basket for us.

When
the car came to the door, it turned out that we couldn’t all get in.

Father
said that he could stay at home and work in the garden. The girls said that
Mother had only to say the word and they’d gladly stay at home and work.

Speaker E

In
the end it was decided that Mother would stay at home and have a lovely restful
day round the house. It turned out anyway that Mother didn’t care for fishing
and also it was just a little bit cold and fresh out-of-doors, though it was
lovely and sunny, and Father was afraid that Mother might take cold if she
came.

We
had the loveliest day. Father and the boys fished, the girls met quite a lot of
people. We all had a splendid time.

Speaker F

It
was quite late when we got back. We sat down to dinner. It was grand. When it
was over all of us wanted to help clear the things up and wash the dishes, only
Mother said that she would really much rather do it. When we all kissed Mother
before going to bed, she said it had been the most wonderful day in her life and
I think there were tears in her eyes.

WHAT IS A TRUE AMERICAN?

Mary. Look, Nick! Is this a portrait of Daniel Boone, the
legendary 18th century conqueror of the wilderness? He was the prototype for
Leather Stocking in Fenimore Cooper’s «The Leather Stocking Tales».
You won’t believe how enthralled I was while reading all these novels.

Nick. Were you? I remember dozing -from the start. I could
never get past the first novel, you know. The Wild West heroes are another
pair of shoes. They had to fight against other men rather than mastering the
harsh challenges of the wilderness like Daniel Boone. True, they lived in
another epoch, from 1860s to 1890s, I believe. To make a long story short, I
prefer seeing westerns to reading about Indians.

M. No way! That’s just not true. There is nothing like
reading. It’s much more absorbing than the abridged screen versions. While
reading your imagination is restricted neither by actors’ appearances nor by
their way of doing things. I’m virtually never satisfied with the screen
versions, for the producer’s vision seldom coincide with mine.

N. I see your point, but you can’t deny that westerns are
far more dynamic and thrilling. They show you male strength in fist fights,
gun fighting, and horse riding skills, hardiness and courage, real manhood, a
true American, in a word.

M. Oh, that’s your ideal of manliness and your idea of a
true American, is it? Why, your hero seems to lack intelligence and moral
sensitivity, doesn’t he? As for a true American, we’d better ask Mr Warner
and David.

N. Sure. I’ve been arguing with Mary about true American
character. You see, the English are said to be prim, the French are
considered full of life, the Finnish are believed to be taciturn, the Spanish
are known to be proud, the German-pedantic, the Russian — hospitable and so
on and so forth.

M. That’s true. There certainly exist features common to
all Americans in spite of their personal differences. They are our common
national values and beliefs, and those wishing to become Americans have to
accept them.

N. But a certain stereotype does exist. Many think
Americans are open-hearted, straightforward, cheerful, relaxed and tough.

M. It seems to come from the westerns idealizing
«macho-men». A macho-man is a physically tough and rugged guy
standing alone. He can meet all the dangers of life and is strong enough to
protect not only himself. And this beloved character lives on in detective
films, thrillers and melodramas.

N. This idea is not groundless. It stems from the early
stages of American history when the first immigrants stepped on American
soil. They came with the aim of becoming free, independent and happy. They
wanted to obey no one, neither government nor church. They sought individual
freedom, equality and prosperity for everyone regardless of background and
birth. But first they had to settle in the unexplored land, develop it by
conquering the wilderness which had many dangers and surprises in store,
including the hostile Indians. It was only natural that in those conditions
people respected the ability to win, to be energetic, and valued what a
person can do in the here and now by himself, not the kind of family he had
come from. They also valued the ability to invent and experiment while
overcoming difficult obstacles, with no tools at hand, the only tools being
one’s head and hands. This is where the main traits of the American national
character, values, and beliefs come from.

M. So it was values that made character. Sometimes it’s not
easy to understand what values stand for.
We are glad you are
telling us,
Nike.

On
and off Broadway

New York is the American theater
capital. The main theater district is based around part of the long avenue
called Broadway. Many big plays and musicals open there. It can cost more than
a million dollars to produce a play or a show on Broadway, so ticket prices can
be very high; some start at $60 or more.

Smaller or more experimental plays are shown
off-Broadway, in smaller theaters around
Manhattan. If a play is off-off-Broadway, it is in a theater that is very
small and out of the way.

Every year outstanding
Broadway playwrights, actors, musicians, lyricists, directors, choreog
raphers, and
technicians are nominated for Tony Awards. August Wilson, an African-American
playwright, has received both a Tony and a Pulitzer Prize for his play Fences.
It is about a first-class baseball player who can’t make it to a major
league team and his struggle with the difficulties of everyday life. Wendy
Wasserstein, a female playwright, won a Tony for The Heidi Chronicles, which
was later made into a movie. The play follows the life of a well-educated,
middle-class single woman growing up in the 1960s, and her life in the 1970s
and 1980s.

The
movie business

Have you seen a Hollywood blockbuster recently? Hollywood is the center of the
international movie industry, and American movies are distributed all over the
world. They are made in English, but often
dubbed into other languages. In some countries, 90 per cent of the mov
ies
that people see are US productions. Sometimes, a film is not very popular with Americans, but people in
other countries like it.

The first films were made in Hollywood in 1911.
Between 1930 and 1945, the five largest Hollywood film studios produced most of
the movies and owned most of the movie theaters in the United
States.

Making films is expensive. On the average, it
costs 36 million dollars to produce a movie. Some of this goes to pay the
salaries of well-known movie stars, and large sums can be spent
on special effects like computer-generated imagery (CGI). Marketing the movie to
the public may cost another 17 million dollars or more. To cover these costs
film companies receive money for movie theater tickets and the sale or rental
of videos. They also sell CDs of the soundtrack, and toys, books, or clothes
associated with the movie.

Public
holidays

Americans usually have only two to three weeks’
paid vacation a year, so they make the most of public holidays. Often public
holidays fall on a Monday so people have only a minimum of extra time off.

Public holidays are the same
throughout the country, although some states like Massachus
etts and Maine have an extra holiday. They celebrate
Patriot’s Day on the third Monday in April
to re
member the first battle of the American Revolution.

Memorial Day and Labour Day mark the beginning and
end of the summer. Many people take short vacations over the long holiday
weekends. Others enjoy picnics or barbecues.

The first holiday, Memorial Day, honours American
soldiers who have died in wars. Labour Day is a holiday to honour working
people all over America.

Independence Day, also known as the Fourth of
July, comes in the middle of summer. It is another time to celebrate with
barbecues and picnics, and many towns and
cities across the nation have excit
ing fireworks displays in the
evening. The Fourth of July is the day in 1776 when the
Declaration of Independence was signed and Americans started to fight for
independence from the
British.

Autumn
and winter

On Halloween (October 31) children wear costumes
and go trick-or-treating. At each house they visit, they shout “Trick or
treat?” Usually, people give the children candies, because they don’t want to
have a trick played on them.

On Thanksgiving Day,
families and friends share a big meal of roast turkey and pumpkin pie. They
celebrate the first feast that the English settlers, the Pilgrims, shared with
the American
Indians in 1620.

After Thanksgiving,
preparations for the winter holiday season begin. Christians celebrate the
birth of Christ on Christmas, and families and friends exchange cards and
gifts. Houses are
decorated with Christmas trees and coloured lights. On Christmas Day, children
find presents from Santa Claus under the Christmas tree.

The eight days of
Hanukkah in December celebrate the religious freedom of the Jews from oppression.
Jews light a candle for each night of Hanukkah to remember the miracle of the
sacred lamp that burned for eight days on only one day’s worth of oil.

Kwanzaa
is a seven-day African-American holiday from December
26 through January 1.
A candle is lit on each of the seven days of Kwanzaa.

A few years ago, while I was on holiday in the Himalayas, I stopped

for the night in a small village. It was a very poor place and there was no

proper hotel, but the owner of a restaurant offered me a bed for the night.

»Please wait here,» he said, pointing to a table just outside his

restaurant, «while I prepare your room.»

It was a beautiful evening. The sun was setting behind the dark

mountains and the stars were just beginning to come out. The villagers

were lighting fires for their evening meals and there was a. pleasant

smell of wood smoke in the

;

air.

Then I noticed that I was no longer alone. Someone was sitting at the

table beside me. It was an old man, with a long white beard. His clothes

were dirty and almost in rags.

What do you want?» I asked. «Let me tell your fortune, sir,» he said.

I laughed. «I don’t believe in that sort, of thing,» I told him. All the same,

the old man took hold of my hand. «I can tell you your future,» he said. I

tried to take my hand away, but the old man held on to it, gently but very

firmly.

«Very well,» I said. «But first of all tell me about my past. If you can

tell me about that, I’ll let you tell me about the future too.» The old man

looked hard at my hand for a long time without speaking. I smiled to

myself. «He can’t do it,» I thought.

Then, in a low soft voice, the old man began, to tell me about my

childhood. He talked about my family and the town I used to live in. He

went on to tell me about my life in different parts of the world.

Every word he said was true! «Stop!» I said. «How can you know all

these things?» «I know about the past and the present,» the old man

replied. «And I also know about the future. Are you ready to hear about

your future too?» I hesitated. Did I really want to know? Just at that

moment, the owner of the restaurant came out. «Your room is ready

now, sir,» he said. «Oh! I thought I heard voices. Were you talking to

someone?»

I looked round. The old man was not there. «Yes,» I said. I described

the old man. «Oh, him!» the owner of the restaurant said. «That’s the

village lunatic! He thinks he can tell people’s fortunes! I hope he wasn’t

a nuisance.

It was my birthday last Thursday and I decided to celebrate it by

inviting a few friends out to supper. I chose a restaurant in a quiet part of

town. It is one of my favourite restaurants because the food is good and

the waiters are friendly. It is hardly ever crowded, however, because few

people know about it, so it is not usually necessary to book a table. In any

case, Thursday is not a busy evening as a rule.

When we entered the restaurant, I was surprised, therefore, to find it

completely full. I looked around — but not a single table was free. One of

the waiters recognized me. He came across and explained the situation.

“A party of tourists came in about half an hour ago,» he said. «It was like

an invasion! Suddenly the place was full! We can hardly manage!»

The waiter then pointed to a table in the corner. «The people there are

just about to leave,» he said, «just hold on and you’ll find a place there.»

He was right. Fifteen minutes later, the people at the corner table paid

their bill, got up and left. I led my friends across and we all sat down.

Unfortunately, our table was almost out of sight. We tried to attract the

attention of the waiter who sent us there but he, like all the other waiters,

was busy with the party of tourists. They ordered enormous quantities of

food. But at last, nearly an hour later, the tourists were finishing their

meal and looking very pleased with life. The waiter, now very tired,

appeared at our table. I advised my friends about the best dishes and

finally the waiter went off with our order.

A few moments later he came back to our table. We could tell from his

face that he had bad news for us. Full of apologies, he informed us that

there was no meat or fish left. «All we can offer you,» he said, «is an

omelette!»

  • This test is for upper intermediate students of schools, collages, institutes.

  • The short story will help you understand english.
Это задание подойдет для тех кто хоть немного может читать или понимать на слух английскую речь.
    Уровень:  Elementary

  • This test is for the 10th form. Unit 6 «Art»

    90% = A1 (Breakthrough level) = Начинающий
    75% = A2 (Waystage) = Элементарный
    55% = B1 (Threshold) = ОГЭ (9 класс)
    35% = B2 (Vantage) = ЕГЭ (11 класс)
    10% = C1 (Effective proficiency)
