- Make sure that when you spell out words, you place letters in a horizontal row or a vertical column rather than in a diagonal line, which is not allowed.

Set up the Scrabble board, letter racks, and letter tiles. Lay out the board, put all 100 letter tiles in the cloth bag that’s included with the game, and put out 1 letter rack per player. Make sure each letter rack is placed in front of 1 of the 4 sides on the board.[1]
- Give everyone a piece of paper and a pencil, too. That way, they can keep track of all their points.
- If your crew wants to be extra fancy, each player can bring their very own Scrabble score notebook.

Agree on a dictionary to use for challenges. At some point during the game, it’s possible that someone might play a word that another player thinks is invalid. In this kind of situation, you’ll need to look up the word in a dictionary. Make sure everyone is on the same page about the dictionary you’ll use, then refer to it whenever challenges come up. Or, use the official “Word Checker for Scrabble®” app instead. Words that are always off limits include:[2]
- Proper nouns—nouns that are always capitalized—like names and places.
- Abbreviations, like “CIA,” “FBI,” or “USA.”
- Prefixes or suffixes by themselves, like “anti-” or “-ful.”
- Hyphenated words, like “short-term” or “old-fashioned.”
- Any other incomplete and unofficial English word, like “ridic” (for “ridiculous”).

Put all 100 tiles in the bag and shake it. To make sure you randomize all the letters so no one knows what they’re pulling, fill the bag with all the tiles, use the drawstring to close it, and shake them around. Whoever goes first is based on the tile they pull, which is left up entirely to chance.

Pull a tile to decide who plays first. Pass the bag around the table and let each player draw 1 tile. Next, each person places their tile face up on the table. The player with the letter that is closest to the letter “A” makes the first Scrabble play. If anyone draws a blank tile, they automatically start the game.[3]

Fill your rack with 7 tiles. Let the person who drew the tile closest to “A” go first. Hold the bag above eye level so they can’t see any of the tiles. Once everyone else takes out 7 tiles, make sure they put them onto their tile rack. Then, have them pass the bag to the next player until everyone has drawn their letters and filled their tile racks.[4]
- Do not show your tiles to your fellow players. Part of the fun in playing Scrabble is all the fun surprises when you see what someone else spells out (or when you dazzle everyone with an epic word choice).

The goal of Scrabble is to earn the highest score by the end of the game. You earn points by spelling words with letter tiles. There all sorts of strategies you can use—for example, you can spell words with high value letters like «Q» and «Z» (both of which are worth 10 points each), or you can earn an enormous amount of points by placing letter tiles on big-ticket «Premium Squares,» like Triple Letter Bonuses or even Triple Word Bonuses. - Scrabble is finished once all the players have used all their tiles, all the tiles in the bag have already been drawn, or there are no longer any words that can be played.

Play the first word if you chose the tile closest to “A.” The word must use at least 2 tiles, and 1 of them must be placed on the star square in the center of the board. The word can be laid out vertically (from top to bottom) or horizontally (from left to right), but it can’t go diagonally across the Scrabble board.[6]
- Keep track of the points for each play! More on that in the Scoring section.
- The star counts as a “Premium Square,” and it doubles the score of the player who places their first word. For example, if the total value of the first word played was 10, then the player actually doubles that and collects 20 points.

Draw new tiles at the end of each round. After you’re done with your turn, grab new tiles to replace any that you just played. For example, if you played 3 of your tiles to form a word during your turn, pull out 3 new tiles from the bag at the end of your turn. Place these new tiles on your rack.[7]
- Pass the bag to the next player so they can draw new tiles at the end of their turn, too.
- Make sure that everyone has 7 tiles again by the end of their turn unless there aren’t enough tiles left in the bag to make this possible.

Go clockwise to give the next player their turn. Once the first player has made their move and ended their turn, the person to the left of this individual follows suit. When this player finishes up with their turn, then the person to the left of them makes their play, and so on.[8]

Build off another player’s word when it’s your turn. When it’s your turn again, make sure to keep adding onto the words that other opponents have just played. Just like the case is for every round, you aren’t able to create a “freestanding” word on the board that doesn’t work off of someone else’s word. For a word to be valid, all tiles must be connected on the board.[9]
- Make sure to consider all the connected tiles. If you add tiles to someone else’s word on the board, the tiles must create 1 new word. However, if your tiles touch other tiles somewhere else on the board, these connections need to also make valid words for your play to count.
- For example, build the word “noisy” by using the «n» in another player’s word, “pension,” to connect all of the words.

Challenge a player if you think their word is invalid. Whenever you genuinely believe that a player has placed down a word that doesn’t exist or is misspelled, challenge that player. Look up the word in the dictionary everyone’s chosen and check whether it’s valid or invalid.[10]
- Just be careful—if the word is in the dictionary and the player has spelled it correctly, then the word stays and the player gets the points. As the challenger, you’ll lose your turn.
- If the word is not in the dictionary or the player has spelled it incorrectly, then the player must remove the word from the board. The player gains no points and loses that turn.

Exchange tiles if you want different ones. At some point during the game, you might decide that you want to exchange some or all of your tiles for new ones. You can use a turn to get new tiles. Just discard the tiles that you no longer want into the bag, shuffle the bag and draw the number of tiles that you got rid of.[11]
- Just keep in mind that you can’t play a word in addition to drawing new tiles, so this move counts as your turn.
- There’s also a chance that you might draw some of the letter tiles you were trying to get rid of, especially if the number of tiles in the bag is running low.

«Pass» if you’d prefer to neither place a word nor exchange tiles. Sometimes, you might feel like you’ve run out of options for that turn. You may also think your current tiles might pay off on another round, so you don’t want to exchange them for new ones. If that’s the case, just ask to «pass» and let the next player make their move.[12]
- Keep in mind that the game ends if all players choose to «pass» for two consecutive turns in a row.

Keep track of your points after each play. Once you put down a word, make sure to take out your paper (or notebook) and a pencil. Look down at the lower right-hand corner of each of the tiles you laid down—you’ll find the points they’ll each give you. If you placed a tile on a Premium Square, then adjust your score based on the bonus it gives you. Write down the total points you earned for the turn.[13]

Collect points from Premium Squares when you place tiles on them. You only earn a bonus from a Premium Square during the turn that you laid a tile over it. You won’t be able to take advantage of a bonus from a Premium Square that you used in a previous turn or that was already counted by another player.[14]
- Double Letter Score: A letter placed on this square is double (x2) the number of points shown on the letter tile.
- Double Word Score: A word that is made up of a letter placed on this Premium Square receives double (x2) the number of points than it otherwise would.
- Triple Letter Score: A letter placed on this square is triple (x3) the number of points shown on the letter tile.
- Triple Word Score: A word that is made up of a letter placed on this Premium Score receives triple (x3) the number of points than it otherwise would.
- When tallying the bonuses for plays with multiple Premium Squares, use an order of operations—add the letter bonuses before the word bonuses.[15]
- Example: If you lay down 5 letter tiles to spell the word «aroma,» and «m» is on a Triple Letter Bonus, while the entire word is on a Double Word Bonus, first calculate the bonus for the letter (3×2=6), factor it in when getting the score for the total word (1+1+1+6+1=10), then use the Triple Word Score to trip that sum (10×3=30) to arrive at your final score (30) for that turn.

Get a 50-point bonus if you use all 7 tiles in 1 turn. This incredible move and amazing bonus is also known as a “Bingo.” If you manage to lay down all 7 tiles from your rack and play a word, tally up the total value of your word plus any bonuses earned from Premium Squares, then add 50 points on top of that—lucky you![16]
- Example: If you lay down all 7 tiles to play the word “detainer,» and both «e» and «n» are on Triple Letter Bonus Squares, factor in the bonuses for «e» (1×3=3) and «n» (1×3=3), total up the score whole word (1+3+1+1+1+3+1+1=12), then add your 50-point «Bingo» (12+50=62) to receive your final score for that turn (62).

Calculate each player’s score at the end of the game. As the scorekeeper tallies everyone’s points, each player announces the points value (if any) of the tiles left over in their rack. Deduct this value from each player’s points total to find out each player’s final score.[17]
- If a player tallied up 100 points, but they have 2 tiles left in their rack which have a combined points total of 9, then they’ll end the game with 91 points (100-9=91).
- If a super fortunate player ends the game with 0 tiles in their rack, then they get the sum of all other players’ unplayed tiles added to their score.
- If there were 3 other players, and they each had 5 points left in their racks, then the player with 0 tiles gets to add 15 points (5+5+5) to their total score.
- If there’s a tie, then the player with the highest score before any deductions wins.
- If Player A and Player B are tied with points, but Player A had 119 points before deducting 1 point and Player B had 120 points before deducting 2 points, then Player B wins.

Announce the winner. After the scorekeeper has added each player’s scores and deducted the values of any unused tiles, it’s time for them to congratulate the victor. The person who has the highest score wins the game; second place goes to the person with the second highest score, and so on. Playing Scrabble is probably a whole lot easier than it looks when you are sitting on the outside looking in. When you are involved in the game and used to the gameplay, you will find that it becomes increasingly easy.

Playing Scrabble – Step By Step
If you follow the 11 simple steps above, you can learn how to play Scrabble the right way in a jiffy. Before you know it, you will be playing Scrabble like a pro. Let us take a closer look at each of the steps and what they involve.
1. Set up the board (and racks) and prepare to play.
Preparing for the game means that you get everything you need ready. Make sure that you have a game board, that there are 110 tiles available in the bag, that there is a rack for each player, and of course, that you have willing people to play with. Each person should get a rack and a comfy position at board. Place all of the tiles into the bag and shake it to mix them up nicely. You are now ready to play Scrabble. The next step is to decide who starts the game off.
2. Determine who starts the game.
In order to decide who goes first, each of the players must draw a random tile from the bag. The player who draws the tile letter that is closest to A is the player who will go first. The direction of play is meant to go in a clockwise direction. If any of the players draws a blank tile, it automatically means that they get to start the game. Now that you know who will play first, each player needs to get sufficient tiles to play the game.
3. Each player draws tiles.
Player 1 gets to draw tiles first, followed by the rest of the players, in a clockwise direction. Each player must draw 7 tiles randomly from the bag. It is important that you do not let any other players see what tiles you have. Drawing one tile at a time is helpful as you can place each one onto the rack. When you are done, pass the bag to the next player so that they can do the same.
4. Each player gets a turn to play a word.
Player 1 gets to create the first word. The first word must be at least 2 letters long, and one of the tiles for the word must be placed over the star square that is found in the very middle of the board. This is the starting point.
You cannot play a diagonal word, but you can position the word vertically or horizontally as required. Each player then has a turn to follow suit. It is important to note that the starting word comes with a double score attached. If a player is unable to play a word, he or she can skip a turn. A player cannot skip 2 turns in a row.
Going round after round in a clockwise position makes sense, but when is the game over? The game is over when all letters have been drawn and one of the players has used his/her last letter; or no more words can be played.
5. Tally up the scores.
At the end of the round, the scores need to be tallied up. When you play a word, make a note of the points that the word is worth. You can find little numbers printed on the bottom right corner of each of the tiles. Add these up and keep a note of it. At the end of the game, the person with the highest score will win.
It’s important to note that if a player uses all of his/her 7 tiles in one round, he/she gets 50 bonus points added to their score.
6. Draw new tiles.
Every time you play a set of tiles to make a word, you need to draw new tiles (the same amount as you have just played). The new tiles must be placed onto your rack and the bag of tiles must be passed onto the next player.
7. Build on the existing words on the board.
As each player adds to the board, there are new opportunities to create new words that crop up. With every turn, you get to build on the existing words on the board. You cannot create a word on its own that is not connected to the words that are already on the board. Your added tiles must create a new word. And if your new word connects with other tiles on the board; where they connect has to make sense and be a valid, acceptable word.
8. Focus on getting the highest scores possible on each turn.
As you play, you need to focus on playing tiles that ramp up your score tally as quickly as possible. Really scrutinize the board to ensure that you are seeing all possible options and that you are playing those that earn you the most points. You will notice that there are premium squares available on the board. These are indicated on the board, so if you can play them, do so! These include the following:
- Double word score: words that are placed on this particular area have a double score attached to them. Look at the number printed on the tiles and multiply that by 2 when you are tallying up the score.
- Double letter score: letters that are placed on this particular square will receive a double score. Check the number that is printed on your tile and then make sure that you double that score when you tally up.
- Triple word score: any word that includes the letter tile that is placed on this particular square is liable for a triple score. That means that you multiple the tally for that word by 3.
- Triple letter score: a letter tile that is placed on this particular square can enjoy a score that is tripled.
9. Challenge other players on their words.
While you are playing Scrabble, there might be a word that crops up that you do not think is a real or accepted word. You can then challenge the word. When doing so, you will need to look up the word in the Dictionary to confirm whether it is legitimate or not.
What happens if you are wrong? If you have challenged a word and it turns out that the word does exist and that it is spelled correctly, the player will receive his/her points, and you will lose your turn. If the challenger is correct and there is no such word or it’s misspelled, then the word is removed from the board. There are no points awarded, and the player misses his/her turn.
10. Exchange tiles that you do not want.
There will probably come a time in the game when you feel like there is nothing you can do with your existing tiles. You can then exchange them for new ones, although it is not recommended to do this on a whim. You can do this quite simply by using your turn to discard the old tiles into the bag, shaking it up, and then drawing at random the same amount of cards. If you end up with some of the same tiles, that is just the luck of the draw. If you do this, you do miss your turn to play a word. Exchanging tiles is considered a turn.
11. Finishing the game: Calculate each player’s score.
The game is over when all tiles have been drawn and one of the players has used his/her last letter; or no more words can be played (or made). To calculate each player’s final score, add the points of all of his/her rounds, and then subtract his/her unplayed letters. If a player has no letters left, he/she gets the sum of all the other players’ unplayed tiles added to his/her score. The player with the highest score at the end is the winner. In case there is a tie, the player with the highest score, before deduction, wins.

Подготовка к игре «Scrabble»
Прежде чем приступить к игре, приготовьте лист бумаги и ручку. Страницу нужно будет разделить на столько столбцов, сколько игроков, и подписать их. Здесь будут фиксироваться заработанные очки.
Все костяшки с буквами ссыпьте в мешочек и перемешайте. Каждый участник вытягивает вслепую по одной фишке – у кого окажется фишка с буквой, ближайшей к началу алфавита (имейте в виду, что «пустышка» идет раньше, чем «А»), тот ходит первым. Далее – по часовой стрелке.
Пригодится и специальный словарь «Эрудита» или «Скрабл», где перечислены допустимые слова. Подойдет и обычный орфографический словарь. Пользоваться им при составлении лексем нельзя – только при проверке в спорных случаях.
Участники кладут перед собой подставки для костяшек, по очереди не глядя берут из мешочка по 7 костяшек (вытянутую при жеребьевке убирают назад) и размещают их на подставке.
Цель игры
Цель игры – набрать как можно больше очков. Для этого нужно не просто составлять слова, но и с максимальной выгодой размещать их на поле, чтобы заработать больше. Каждый из игроков старается положить свои костяшки на бонусные клетки, а следующий игрок – воспользоваться промашками противниками или появившимися возможностями.
Взаимная помощь и игра «Скрабл» («Эрудит») не совместимы, если только это не обучающая партия. Игрок может видеть только свои фишки и только ими оперировать.

«Scrabble» – правила и стратегия игры
Классическая «Scrabble» – настольная игра с жесткими условиями. Правила «Скрэбл» подразумевают не только составление словечек из букв – делать это полагается строго определенным способом.
В Scrabble правила ограничивают выбор разрешенных слов. Используемая иностранная лексика должна быть зафиксирована в русском написании в словаре, а не опираться на произношение и транскрипцию. Так, можно составить «pen» или «cafe», если вы играете в «Скрабл» на английском, но если она у вас не «english», а «русская», то придется писать перевод – «ручка» и «кофе», а не «пэн» и «кафэ».

Как играть в «Скрабл»
Участвуют от 2 до 4 человек. Они пишут фишками на доске взаимосвязанные слова по принципу кроссворда.
При выкладывании необходимо соблюдать важные условия:
- Располагаться буквы должны строго по горизонтали или по вертикали, пересекаясь с уже выложенными;
- Допускается наращивание одного слова так, чтобы получалось новое полноценное («лес» – «лесник»). Но нельзя прибавлять буквы к середине слова и иметь на выходе бессмыслицу («рука»+«лач»= не «калач», а «рукалач»);
- Нельзя сдвигать уже лежащие фишки, чтобы, например, превратить «рука» в «ручка»;
- Можно одним махом выкладывать два слова, если позволяет удачное соседство. Одно будет читаться сверху вниз, второе слева направо;
- Разрешается делать «мостик» между параллельными рядами, достраивая нужное слово;
- «Пустышка» заменяет любую букву и остается лежать на поле. Ее стоимость равна нулю.
Почти все эти правила не применимы к «Скрабл. Неожиданные повороты» («Scrabble Twists Turns»).
Партия заканчивается, когда израсходованы все фишки или участники больше не могут сделать ни одного хода.

Пояснения для спорных случаев
Все соприкасающиеся по прямой костяшки должны составлять одно слово. Нельзя написать «каша», если после второй «а» стоит «п» от перпендикулярной «шляпы» – иначе выйдет «кашап»;
допустимо повторять одно слово дважды;
в отличие от «Эрудита» «Скрабл» разрешает использование множественной формы существительных и остальные части речи;
буквы можно наращивать с обеих сторон слова («дом» – «придомовой»);
бонусные клетки срабатывают только в тот ход, когда на них ставится фишка;
если игроку удалось составить несколько слов за ход, то он получает очки за каждое по основным правилам;
словарь нужен только для проверки – искать в нем слова на своем ходу нечестно.
Механика
В «скрэббл» механика основана на случайности, знаниях и находчивости участников. Технически ее можно описать как выкладывание слов из случайно выпавших элементов.
В счет идет каждое слово
Каждое новое слово может радикально повлиять на счет, если удачно ляжет на доску. Поэтому будьте внимательны каждый ход.
Маленькая подсказка: можно за ход составить несколько коротких словечек. Даже если они будут дешевые сами по себе, но на них уйдут все фишки, вы получите бонусные баллы.

Подготовка к игре
Перед началом партии в «Скрэббл» подготовьте лист бумаги и ручку. Положите игровое поле, определитесь, кто будет ходить первым, и наберите стартовые 7 костяшек (их добирают после каждого хода).
Подсчет очков
Система, по которой подсчитываются очки, кажется запутанной, но только на первый взгляд.
На каждой костяшке с буквой указана ее «цена» – то, сколько очков принесет ее использование. В зависимости от частоты употребления буквы в языке это значение меняется:
- А, В, Е, И, Н, О, Р, С, Т – 1 очко;
- Д, К, Л, М, П, У – 2 очка;
- Б, Г, Ё, Ь, Я – 3 очка;
- Й, Ы – 4 очка;
- Ж, З, Х, Ц, Ч – 5 очков;
- Ш, Э – 8 очков;
- Ф, Щ, Ъ – 10 очков.
Когда буквы не попадают на цветные клетки, то их «цена» просто суммируется. Например, короткое «щука» – 10+2+2+1= 15 очков. А длинное «корова» – 2+1+1+1+1+1=7 очков.
Если фишка попадает на светло-синюю клетку, то количество очков буквы умножается на два, если на темно-синюю – на три. В «щука» «щ» попадает на темно-синюю клетку – 10*3+2+2+1=35 очков.
Если слово перекрывает светло-красное поле, то не количество очков буквы умножается, а сумма за все слово умножается на два. Темно-красное поле – на три. «Щука» – (10+2+2+1)*3=45
Слово попадет одновременно на несколько цветных клеток? Сначала умножаем стоимость букв, потом все суммируем, потом умножаем всю сумму.
Те, кто смог за один прием израсходовать все свои семь костяшек, получают дополнительные 50 очков.
За один удачный ход можно заработать до 200 очков.
После финала из общего счета участника вычитается стоимость всех букв, которые остались у него на руках. А если он потратил все фишки, то ему прибавляется сумма штрафов противников.
Обмен косточек
Бывает неудачный ход, в который не удается сложить ни одного самого маленького словечка. В таком случае правила «скрэббл» позволяют пропустить ход и обменять любое количество костяшек вслепую.
Пас и пропуск хода
Участник может не выкладывать ничего и не менять костяшки, а просто сказать «пас». Он получает ноль очков, а ход переходит к следующему. Когда все игроки по очереди сказали «пас» дважды, партия заканчивается – потому что не может продолжаться с игроками-призраками.
Составление первого слова
Составление первого слова, с которого начнется настольная игра, доверяется игроку, выигравшему жеребьевку. Основное условие: минимум две использованные буквы и пересечение центральной клетки со звездочкой. Иногда правило усложняют: первое слово должно быть минимум из пяти букв или из двух слогов.
После этого игровое поле переходит в распоряжение следующего игрока – слова, которые он составит, должны пересекать или соприкасаться с начальным.

Разрешенные слова
Допустимы все слова, которые есть в словаре того языка, на котором вы играете (в нашем случае – на русском). Почти все. Нельзя использовать имена собственные, сокращения, приставки, суффиксы, слова, пишущиеся через дефис или апостроф. Можно использовать форму единственного и множественного числа.
Правила ФСР строже – только существительные в именительном падеже единственного числа, никаких глаголов и прилагательных, никаких уменьшительных форм.

Какие еще бывают наборы
«Скрабл джуниор» – специально рассчитан на начинающих игроков в возрасте от 5 до 10 лет. На поле уже написаны слова – необходимо только выкладывать по ним фишки из тех, что на руках.
Комплект «Скрабл дорожный» несколько меньше по формату, чем базовый сет, – удобнее класть с собой в сумку. Основное отличие – пластиковое поле с ячейками, из которых фишки не будут выпадать или съезжать.
«Скрабл. Неожиданные повороты». В нем нет поля и даже системы подсчета очков, зато добавлены фишки действия. Фишки с буквами круглые и с выемкой сбоку. Можно выстраивать их в любом направлении, хоть по кругу, хоть справа налево. Задача – избавиться ото всех своих букв, поэтому основная стратегия – составлять слова не с редкими буквами, а максимально длинные.
Фишки действия могут заставить отдать часть своих фишек противнику, пропустить ход или даже вынудить продолжать не по, а против часовой стрелки.
Подарочный набор у «Скрабл» в русскоязычном издании не предусмотрен, но зато такой есть у «Эрудита». Он отличается большой красивой коробкой, бархатным мешочком для костяшек и наличием словаря имен существительных.

Тематические. Для усложнения процесса можно очертить тему, и все слова должны придумываться только на нее или за тематические начислять дополнительные баллы.
С двойным мешочком. Для упрощения буквы раскладывают на гласные и согласные в два разных мешочка. Какая нужнее, из того мешочка и тянут.
Наоборот. Когда партия закончена, не спешите ссыпать костяшки в мешочек – теперь попробуйте не выстраивать, а убирать слова с доски. Очки считаются по номиналу букв.
Для одиночек
Несколько странно играть в одиночку, скажете вы? Руководство «Федерации Скраббл России» так не считает. Игрок может прекрасно соревноваться сам с собой, оттачивая технику и стремясь побить свои или чужие рекорды, набирая максимум очков.
«Скрабл джуниор» – два в одном
Классический «Скрабл» для детей тяжеловат – его рекомендуют с 8 лет. Поэтому в пятилетнему лучше купить «Скрабл джуниор» с уже написанными словами.

What is Scrabble?
Scrabble is the most popular and recognizable word tile-based game in the world. This modern classic’s origin begins in 1938, where Alfred Mosher Butts, an American architect, created the first iteration of the game. At this point, the now-ubiquitous 15×15 board and addictive gameplay was already in place. It was in 1948 where the rights to the idea were bought, and the name Scrabble was introduced.
Scrabble is a boxed-board game for 2-4 players,
and all you need to play is included in the box. The 15×15 board and the 100
letter tiles are all you need to play, and the complementary tile racks ca be
used to hold the tiles.
The game is designed for 2-4 players, but competitive settings are often 2-player affairs. There are also variations of the rules that allow for 2 teams of two. Regardless, the rules and instructions remain identical.
Pre-game
The set-up of the game is simple. The 100
letter tiles are put into a provided opaque bag to ensure fair drawing. A
dictionary or word list is specified to settle potential disputes regarding the
validity of words that may occur throughout the game.
Turn order is determined with each player
drawing one tile. The player drawing a letter closer that occurs earlier in
alphabetical order will go first. Blank tiles will win when drawn against an
‘A’ tile.
Each player the draws 7 tiles from the draw
bag, and places the tiles such that no other players can see the tiles.
Gameplay
The main gameplay in Scrabble involves the
arranging of tiles to form words. The player going first is required to play a
word with a minimum of two letters, and must come into contact with the centre
square (H8).
On the following turns, all words must use
parts of the words already present on the board. Every subsequent word must use
at least one letter from the words on the board. Words can be formed so long as
they read from top to bottom or left to right.
Each player can choose from three options
during their turn. They can play to the board, forming words with a
corresponding granted score. A player can also opt to swap out tiles from their
hand with the same number of tiles from the draw bag. If desired, a player can
also choose to forfeit their turn by passing.
There are 2 blank tiles in the total of 100
tiles. These tiles can be used as a substitute for any letter, but they have no
point value.
If a player plays out a word during their
turn, they call out the calculated score value of the played word. Scoring is
discussed in the Value, Points and Scoring section of the guide. A player then
refills their hand from the draw bag, returning to a total of 7 tiles. Once
tiles are drawn from the bag, the play cannot be changed.
How does Scrabble
End?
Based on the official tournament rules, a game of Scrabble ends when a player plays all tiles from their rack, and there are no more tiles in the bag to replenish their hand. Also, a game can end when both players go through 6 turns of both sides passing.
At the end of a game, the scores are calculated, and the winner is the player with the higher score.
Scrabble Rules
With scoring being a major factor in Scrabble, there are rules in place to smoothen the gameplay process. The following discussion will be based on the official Scrabble rules used in tournaments.
Valid Words
In general, all words in the dictionary of choice are valid. However, players in tournaments do not have a dictionary on hand to check. Instead, players operate with their inherent knowledge. As the norm, proper nouns, hyphenated words and acronyms are not allowed, barring those that find usual use. For tournaments, there are two main word lists used, the Tournament Word List (TWL) and the Collins Scrabble Words (CSW).
Challenges
On an opponent’s play, a player can
challenge the validity of the played word, provided the opponent has not yet
drawn tiles to refill their hand. The challenger then looks up the word in the
agreed upon sources. If the word is found to be a fake word, the opponent will
be forced to remove the played tiles, and the turn then passes to the next
player.
If a challenge is unsuccessful, where the
challenged word is found to be valid, penalties may or may not be imposed,
depending on the rules being used for said game.

Value, Points and Scoring
Scrabble scoring is simple. All letter tiles have Scrabble letter values that describes the point value for each tile, which is also based on the letter distribution. You simply sum up the Scrabble points for each letter in the word. This includes any previously played tiles as well. For example, if a player adds an S tile to a previously played DICE, making DICES, the player gets the score for all 5 letters, not just his/her S tile.

On the board, there are special squares
which grant bonuses to players who manage to cover them with letters. These
squares include the “Double Letter”, ‘Triple Letter”, “Double Word” and “Triple
Word”. The letter squares double or triple the score of the letter placed on
that tile, while the word squares do the same, but for the entire word. Each of
these squares can only be used once. For example, in the DICE example, if the
DICE word covered a Double Word square, the player will get double the score
for the DICE word, whereas the player adding the S tile will not benefit from
the doubling.
At the end of the game, if a player manages
to clear all tiles from their hand, they will have ‘gone out’, and they get the
sum of the opponent’s remaining tiles added to their score. To keep score, a Scrabble score sheet can

Strategy and How to Win
The following are some tips to win and get better at Scrabble:
- Memorize two and three letter
words, this is the key of Scrabble
strategy. - Manage your S tiles carefully,
as there are only 4 S tiles in the game, and they can be used to make two words
at once. - Learn to hook, which is
extending words (adding S to RING to make SPRING), while also making another
word at the same time (FAST with the S extending RING to SPRING). - Learn the “Q-without U” words,
there are 17 valid words in the TWL. - Play to the high scoring
squares. If you can capitalize on the Triple Word square, you can get massive lead
on your opponent. - Save extensions. The S tile is
not the only way to extend words, “ER”, “ED” and “ING” can be used as well.

Как появилась игра Scrabble
Игра имеет американское происхождение. Ее изобретатель — архитектор Альфред Баттс, большой любитель настольных развлечений. - Составлять желательно «дорогие» слова — длинные и с максимальным количеством обозначенных на фишках баллов. Чем реже данная буква встречается в употреблении, тем больше очков она принесет.
Важно стараться активировать цветные клетки игрового поля, они дают игроку больше бонусов и баллов:
- голубая клетка — значение фишки удваивается;
- розовая клетка — удваиваются баллы за всё слово;
- синяя клетка — значение жетона утраивается;
- красная клетка — баллы за всё слово утраиваются.
Игра считается законченной, если в мешочке больше не остается фишек, либо игроки, каждый по очереди, дважды пропускают свой ход. Победителем считается тот, кто набирает максимальное количество баллов, поэтому для подсчета следует заранее приготовить листок с ручкой.

Существуют некоторые «секреты» игры, позволяющие приблизить победу и оставить позади своих соперников:
- Постарайтесь побыстрее использовать фишки с редкими буквами. Они, конечно, и приносят неплохие баллы, но и могут стать якорем, тянущим на дно.
- Контролируйте количество фишек с гласными и согласными буквами.
- Старайтесь за один ход составить сразу несколько слов, пусть даже и коротких.
- Максимальное количество очков подарят именно бонусные квадраты, и потому их необходимо, по возможности, занимать первым.
- Если не получается активировать цветную бонусную клетку, то нужно постараться хотя бы заблокировать ее для соперника.

«Скрабл Джуниор»
Набор предназначен для маленьких игроков от 5 до 10 лет. Игровое поле изначально заполнено словами, ребенок должен лишь постараться выложить их. Баллы получает тот, кто первым закрывает нужное слово полностью. С обратной стороны представлено стандартное игровое поле, так что это развлечение из серии «два в одном».
«Дорожный Scrabble»
Данная версия немного меньше по размеру в сравнении с базовым набором. Игровое поле выполнено из пластика для удобства использования в путешествии или поездке. Оно дополнительно оснащено бортиками, чтобы фишки не сползали во время игры.
«Скрабл Неожиданные повороты»
В наборе отсутствует игровое поле, а сами фишки имеют круглую форму с небольшой выемкой сбоку.
Основная цель здесь — как можно быстрее избавиться от фишек на руках, составляя по возможности длинные слова. Нестандартное оформление игры привлекает тех, кто устал от строгих правил, а также любителей сложных слов.

Игру можно усложнить, если очертить рамки каждого тура определенной темой. Если слово все-таки выходит из тематического круга, оно не приносит игроку баллы.
Конструктор слов «Эрудит»
Эрудит — это русскоязычный вариант игры, правила которой значительно строже. Если американская версия развлечения допускает некоторые вольности при составлении слов, то здесь необходимо использовать только имена существительные единственного числа в именительном падеже.
Другие отличия «Эрудита» от «Скрабл»:
- большее количество фишек, их цифровое обозначение тоже отличается;
- фишку-джокер в «Эрудите» можно использовать повторно;
- отсутствует буква Ё;
- разная цветовая гамма игрового поля и бонусных клеток.
У игры есть своя вариация — «Математический Эрудит», где вместо слов необходимо составлять арифметические действия. Еще один собрат «Скрабл» и «Эрудита» — это «Словодел».
Существенных различий здесь нет, принципы игры совпадают. Отличаются лишь производители, а значит, и внешнее оформление игрового пространства и фишек.
Положительные стороны Скрабл
Игра из разряда интеллектуальных, априори, несет только пользу. Это всесторонне развивающее развлечение, которое формирует внимательность, память, грамотность, логику, пространственное мышление и значительно расширяет лексический запас. Для ребенка это идеальный тренажер по изучению алфавита и правописанию. Игра помогает научиться коммуницировать друг с другом, избегая ссор и конфликтов.
Есть ли минусы у «Скрабл»? Вряд ли вы их обнаружите. Замечания игроков касаются лишь оформления игры, да и то они незначительны и несущественны. Кому-то хочется более яркого оформления, другие желают расширенного игрового поля, третьи хотят большего количества фишек.
Некоторые считают стоимость игры завышенной, но это уже вопросы не к самому развлечению, а, скорее, к производителям.
Скрабл — отличный вариант семейного досуга. Игра сближает, укрепляет внутрисемейные отношения и позволяет с пользой провести свободное время.
