Technology and education word formation listening

At a recent family dinner my mother was struggling to remember an actor’s name. Doing what seemed natural, I took out my smartphone, searched for the movie she was talking about and voila! Benedict Cumberbatch. This series of events, which might seem completely (worth) of comment for most of us, (complete) blew my mother away.“How did you know to do that?” she asked, while I tried to explain that it was simply second nature. But, later, it got me thinking; thinking about how we use technology in so many different aspects of our lives. Planning, socialising, communicating and banking – just some of the things that we now tend to do through our gadgets. However, there is one particular group for which technology has had a (benefit) and profound impact on students. Going back to my family dinner, and chatting about university life, it didn’t take too long for the phrase “you kids have it so much easier these days” to feature. But, to be completely fair on my mother, she has a valid point.

While we still have all the same (education) benefits as those of the previous generation, we have so many more as well. We still have libraries available to us, but we also have (count) virtual libraries that exist on the Internet.

Student faculty (interact) is another area that has benefited from technology, for both parties. Nowadays, we can communicate from the comfort of our homes, or even while we are on a bus, through mail, instant messaging or even Instagram.

It’s amazing to actually look back, compare,  and take on board the (advance) that have been made and the benefits we are reaping as a result.

Smartphones, projectors and smart speakers are already a common sight in lecture halls, and why shouldn’t they be? The (replace) of textbooks with e-books on phones allows students the luxury of having up-to-date, interactive or even personalised learning materials.

There might be some interesting features in pronunciation. For example, chemist-chemical-chemistry, we read ch as [k]. Also, technical [ˈteknɪKl]-technician [tekˈnɪʃən]; here the letter c has different sounds. Letters –ci together give sound [ʃ] the same as sh in ship, shop. Learn more about pronunciation rules by reading interesting texts about music here.

TEXT I.

WHAT
DO YOU THINK of SCIENCE?

Modern
technology is rapidly spreading all over the earth. Scientists, researches,
engineers and designers are eager to emulate the material achievements and
living standards of the industrially advanced countries. One can hardly imagine
our present day life without such trivial gadgets as air conditioners, TVs,
computers, mobile phones, MP3 players, etc. Every office is equipped with a PC,
a fax machine, a photocopier, etc. Every teenager is able to use a tablet PC, a
smart phone, etc.

I’m
absolutely sure that all these things make our life more exciting, save a lot
of time and help to avoid health problems. For example, most of my friends have
a microwave in the kitchen. We use it almost every day without realizing how
considerably it revolutionized the way food is cooked both at home and within
food industry. Although it met with the disapproval of many top chefs, when
invented, it is becoming an increasingly common sight in many restaurant
kitchens. Its greatest advantage is a huge reduction of time needed to prepare
a dish. Secondly, it’s easy to clean and high temperatures minimize the risk of
infection. It ‘s also a great time-saver for those who don’t wish to waste
their time sweating over a hot cooker or use cancer causing fats when frying.

When
Charles Babbage (1792 – 1871), a professor of mathematics at Cambridge
University invented the first calculating machine in 1812 he could hardly have
imagined the situation we find ourselves today. In fact, the PCs are being used
in almost every field today for the simple reason that they are more efficient
than human beings, doing 500,000 sums in a fraction of a second. They can pay
wages, reserve seats on planes, control sputniks in space, work out tomorrow’s
weather, play chess and compose music. They even help police fight crime,
saving the policeman from checking the information, identifying the
fingerprints or making a photorobot. It’s needless to say that speed there is
very essential.

Moreover,
scientists predict that virtual reality will soon be a part and parcel of life.
This amazing thing allows us to experience another dimensions. It is not quite
as immediate as the real world, but it is startling and experts say that in a
few years every home will be using a VR set. I must say that it is already used
in Japan to sell kitchens. Instead of renting huge displays, companies can do
with one small office. VR goggles and gloves allow the customers to build their
own kitchen from thousands of options. In fact there are countless applications
for VR. Say, children will be taken to visit castles of the past and medical
students will be able to practice without using real people.

However,
as the technologies advance people inevitably face various problems. This
certainly causes a good deal of disenchantment among the specialists and
consumers. For example, when nuclear power was discovered everybody thought it
to be a clean and cheap alternative to bring coal, fuel and natural gas. This
seemed to be solving the problem of air pollution, wasted lands and health
hazards.

George
Bernard Shaw used to say that maximum of opportunities is always combined with
maximum of temptation. This saying can be fully applied to technical progress.
It was really very tempting to grow enough food and save crops with the help of
pesticides and fertilizers. But years later humanity had to recognize such
horrifying consequences as damaged ground and water supplies, dead soil and
even genetic changes. Nowadays people tend to grow ecologically clean food and
use natural fertilizers.

Chemical
industry undoubtedly brought new medicine, sprays, pills and medications, but
alongside with these caused acid rain, that is gradually killing forests and
lakes.

But
it is my sincere belief that people will be able to cope with all the
ecological problems. It’s not accidental that we are called HOMO SAPIENS.
Nowadays people are getting more and more concerned about the future of our
beautiful planet. Chemical plants install filters on the industrial stacks.
Strict fines are introduced to control pollution. Research is going into
renewable sources of energy: wind, water and sun. Medicine turns to healing
blooms and herbs as many of them have anti-cancer properties and help against
leukemia. Many countries have adopted the laws for the new cars to run on
unleaded patrol. Scientists are intelligent enough to recognize the risks of
computer- or VR-addiction, genetic manipulations and ozone layer damage, waste
and the necessity of recycling.

I’m
absolutely positive that by the power of positive action the humanity will be
able to use technology only in peaceful purposes and to turn our planet into an
oasis of life in the solar system. As D.H. Lawrence said:”Humanity seems to
have an infinite capacity for remaining the same — that is, human”.

TEXT II.

The Progress of Science
in the 20th Century

Our
century has seen great changes in the life and living conditions of people.
Less than a hundred years ago, many of the things that we do now seemed
impossible. No one could imagine that people could fly, or that we could listen
to music thousands of miles away.

You
can clearly see that technology affects everything from travel and health to
music and communications. When you wake up with your alarm clock, open the
fridge for a glass of milk, get on the school bus, or write down your homework
– you’re using technology! Someone thought of the idea, did something about it,
and now we all benefit from it.

The
history of technology goes all the way back to when man first began to use
stone knives to hurt for food. People discovered how to metal and soon they
were creating weapons, jewellery, and tools. Wheels, levers, screws, and
pulleys are technologies that we still use today.

Imagine
a man of Dickens’ time in our modern world. In the sky, he sees people flying;
in tremendous “birds”. At home, we turn a switch and the dark room immediately
becomes light. But the greatest surprise is the Internet. Today it serves many
purposes besides pleasure and entertainment.

Among
the most important scientific discoveries are new medicines. Many illnesses
that people died from fifty years ago are no longer dangerous. People today
have a better chance of living long.

The
little electron is the giant of modern times. Scientists are moving forward
towards a better understanding of its laws. The wonderful bird in the Russian
legend could warn people of coming danger. Electronic means were used during
World War II to learn of coming airplane attacks, and many lives were saved.

Electrons
do wonderful things in calculating machines; which besides working hundreds of
times faster than any mathematician, can feel, touch, smell, hear and see. It
is difficult to imagine how we could calculate the orbits of sputniks and
spaceships without using electronic calculating machines. More and more often,
we hear of scientist using these machines in new fields, it was with the help
of an electronic calculating machine that scientists succeeded, in reading the
language of the Mayas, the ancient people of Mexico. Scientists of many countries
had tried in vain to do this for many, many years. The machines can tell us
what to plant in fields under different climatic conditions, they can tell us
when an earthquake is coming, and where.

In
the old days, chemists tried to make gold in their laboratories. The synthetic
products created by chemists today are more wonderful and more important than
gold. Chemistry has had a new birth in our century, especially organic
chemistry. The new light clothes that are so popular everywhere in the world –
dresses and blouses, shirts and socks, coats and jackets – are often made out
of synthetic, man-made materials based on cellulose. Beautiful paints,
plastics, cosmetics and many medicines are all based on cellulose. What is most
important is that there is cellulose in all trees, vegetables and fruits;
cellulose is easily found everywhere in nature in all things that grow. Every
day chemists are finding new uses for this wonderful material.

You
have to keep your eyes open and be willing to think of a fresh approach to
solving a problem. You also have to learn from your mistakes. In fact, many
technologies were discovered completely by accident! John Walker was trying to
scrape some chemicals off a stick when they burst into flame – and he ended up
with a match. Robert Green ran out of cream for his drinks, so he used
vanilla-ice cream instead – and invented the ice-cream soda. Harry realized
that some metal in the scrap pile didn’t rust – and so used that recipe to make
stainless steel.

Mention
often leads to another. Writing led to printing, which led to books,
newspapers, and magazines. Glass led to lenses, which led to spectacles,
microscopes, and telescopes. Many new technologies build on old ones, which is
why we have so many tools today.

Technology
sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? And in many ways, it is. But while technology has
helped us in many ways, there’s another side to new technology – one that many
people don’t like. New chemicals and pesticides can pollute the environment,
and may be dangerous for people. Some new technologies  — like early cars –
weren’t very safe. And some people think that animals shouldn’t be used in
medical experiments.

There’s
another reason people may not want new technology. Back in 1812, a group of
people called Luddites destroyed the machines in the factories where that
worked because they were afraid the machines would take away their jobs. Today,
there are still people who fear the changes that are brought about by new
technology.

But
for all the jobs that technology has taken away, new ones have opened up – jobs
that many people fear are just as good, if not better. Thanks to technology, we
enjoy air conditioning, monies, space shuttles, antibiotics, and much, much
more.

The
twenty-first century is already here. What new technology we are looking
forward tomorrow?
