The reaping system is unfair, with the poor getting the worst of it. You become eligible for the reaping the day you turn twelve. That year, your name is entered once. At thirteen, twice. And so on and so on until you reach the age of eighteen, the final year of eligibility, when your name goes into the pool seven times. That’s true for every citizen in all twelve districts in the entire country of Panem.

Решил значит познакомится с миром “Голодных Игр“. В своё время много слышал о книгах, фильмах, но только вот никак не могли добраться руки до ознакомления с тем, о чём же всё-таки речь, и с чем же “Голодные Игры” едят (no pun intended!).

Книга написана на американском английском (некотороый перерыв от Гарри Поттера и книг на британском английском в целом). Причём весьма кратким английском. Что это значит? Книга написана от первого лица (повествование от лица Катнисс) и насколько я понял, автор хотела такой вот своеобразной краткостью мыслей подчеркнуть уровень образования и восприятия человека, который бы вырос в Дистрикте 12. И несмотря на всё это, всяких разных интересностей и вкусностей на английском предостаточно.

С учётом всего вышесказанного, представляю Вашему вниманию некий глоссарий тех фраз и выражения (аж целых 142), которое были для меня новыми и интересными при прочтении книги “Голодные Игры” на английском языке.

Также замечу, что оставшиеся 16 “находок” (существительные, прилагательные, наречия и глаголы) я не стал включать в эту статью, поскольку не считаю, что они будут интересными для Вас (да и даже просто ради того, чтобы не утомлять Вас). Эти 16 “находок” весьма односложные и не представляют никакой трудности в понимании – достаточно воспользоваться силой воли и хорошим словарём.

Обращаю Ваше внимание, что, отбирая фразы, я руководствовался своим багажом знаний английского языка. Другими словами, если Вы будете читать книгу, то вполне вероятно, что, Вы столкнётесь с гораздо большим (или же меньшим) объёмом неизвестных слов, фраз и словосочетаний.

В любом случае, всё больше причин для того, чтобы Вы сами прочитали книгу “The Hunger Games” в оригинале на английском и сами составили свой “глоссарий” новых для Вас же слов и выражений на английском.

Значок * указывает на то, что я не сумел подобрать идеальный перевод для данной “находки”, но сумел предложить приближённое вспомогательное  значение. Это не означает, что я не понял, как использовать эту новую красоту на английском – как раз наоборот.

Будь вашей ареной джунгли, пустыня или непроходимый лес, существует восемь важных слов и выражений, необходимых для того, чтобы выжить в Голодных играх. Не забудьте, что их знание может спасти вашу жизнь! И пусть удача всегда будет с вами!

1) Reaping

Все начинается именно с этого, поэтому расшевелите свое серое вещество и включите свое внимание на полную мощность! Reaping (“Жатва”) — это торжественная церемония выбора трибутов: девушки и молодого человека с каждого дистрикта.  

Данное использование “reaping” представляет многие из значений глагола “reap”, которые восходят еще к Древнему английскому, включая самое популярное – собирать, получать награду (как Капитолий получает свою награду за победу над дистриктами). Оно также может ссылаться на выражение “to reap what one sows” (что посеешь, то и пожнешь), поскольку тот факт, что Капитолий забирает детей побежденных дистриктов, напоминает о плачевных последствиях их действий – расплату за бунт жителей Дистрикта-13 около 74 лет назад. 2) Tribute

Примеров подобных “star-crossed lovers” не счесть:  начиная с Тристана и Изольды, заканчивая Джеком и Розой в “Титанике”. 6) Cornucopia

По легенде им был рог козы Альматеи, вскормившей своим молоком младенца Зевса. Впоследствии он стал ассоциироваться с изобилием, богатством и плодородием.

7) Career

Небольшой совет относительно карьер – избегайте их во что бы то ни стало! В Голодных играх «карьерами» обладают сильные натренированные и смертельно опасные трибуты, как правило, из дистриктов 1 и 2. Хотя это противоречит законам, они тренируются всю жизнь и идут на Игры добровольцами с единственное целью – заполучить лавры победителя. В современном английском языке “career” обозначает продвижение в какой-либо профессиональной сфере деятельности, восходит к французскому «carrier» и впервые появилось в OED в 1927 году. 8) Muttation
