At times when you, or others around you, are facing life’s challenges, receiving a word from God can bring great comfort.

Here are some thoughts from the story and example of the Prophet Habakkuk, to help you receive your own word from God for yourself and others in times of need.

How to Receive a Word from God

1. Position Yourself to Hear from God

‘I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts’ (Hab 2:1a)

Habakkuk used the imagery of going to a fortress, a place positioned above and apart from the everyday activities of the city, to wait on God in a secure place. This also represented his position as prophet, hearing from God for the nation of Judah.

In times of trial or distress, God Himself is your refuge and your fortress; a safe strong place. (Psalm 91:2)

When you desire to hear from God, then like Habakkuk, be intentional about being positioned in such a way that you can hear His voice.

  • The first place to go is to Scripture—as you read and meditate on God’s Word, allow the Holy Spirit to minister a fresh word to your personally
  • You may have a regular place where you pray and meet with God
  • Be open to the Holy Spirit’s call to take special times apart when you need to hear a word from God

2. Take your Problems and Questions (and those of others) to God

‘I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint.’ (Hab 2:1b)

Communication in a relationship is two-way, involving both talking and listening. The book of Habakkuk records the prophet’s discussions with God.

Habakkuk’s conversation with God was raw, honest and authentic. He did not hold back when he had questions and complaints. Sometimes we feel that we can only go to God once we are already uplifted in our faith, forgetting that He longs to do that for us!

God is your help, your strength and your comforter—and He can only be those things to you as you take your pain to Him.

It was only as Habakkuk asked the difficult questions that he could foresee Judah crying out during the future trials, that He was able to hear of God’s plans for the coming redemption.

The name ‘Habakkuk’ means ‘embrace’, or ‘to hold close’ (Strongs 2265), and because the prophet allowed God to fully minister to him, he was in turn able to supply the comfort and encouragement of God to a nation.

‘But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.’ (1 Cor 14:3)

3. Go on a Journey with God

‘How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save?’ (Hab 1:2)

Your communications with God and your conversations with Him, will be a journey. Hearing from God is not like taking aim and hitting a target or bullseye. The heart of God responds to those who seek Him—and that takes time.

Don’t be content with a small snippet, or piece of revelation, when God desires to speak more to you.

Learn from Habakkuk, who went on a journey, complaining, crying out, conversing, waiting and listening until he reached a place of faith and heard all that God had to say to him.

Habakkuk’s journey throughout this small book is one where he progresses from a viewpoint of desperation, to one of trust and victory. The last chapter of Habakkuk is directed as a Psalm set to music.  It inspires those listening to hope in God despite the circumstances.

‘The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.’ (Hab 3:19)

4. Pay Attention to the Unique Way God Speaks to you

‘I will look to see what he will say to me.’ (Hab 2:1)

Habakkuk used visionary language to describe how he listened to God. For those of us who are seers and visionaries, listening to God also means watching.

God is Spirit, and has many ways to communicate. Take into account your gift and the unique way you connect with God.

Be open to receiving impressions from the Holy Spirit and dig deeply into God’s Word.

5. Record what God is saying

‘Then the Lord replied: “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.”’ (Hab 2:2)

As with Habakkuk, there are times when a message from God is prophetic and concerns His intention and His future outcome. As you record a communication from God—whether it is a prophetic insight, a dream, Scripture or Word, it gives clarity in the journey, both for yourself and others you may minister to.

Having a written or audio record of your word from God gives you something tangible to celebrate.

Glory is given to God when it comes to pass.

Recording what God is saying allows you to pray about it, weigh it up and if it goes beyond general encouragement, to submit the word to oversight for confirmation (1 Cor 14:29, 1 Thess 5:19-21). Accountability gives us security in our journey of learning to hear God’s voice.

Finally, as Habakkuk reminds us, the ultimate test of a word from God is whether or not that word comes true.

‘For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.’ (Hab 2:3)

Notes:
In preparing for this study, I read Habakkuk in different translations and also listened to Habakkuk several times using an audio Bible App. I mention this because I encourage you to do the same as you study God’s Word. Take time to connect fully with what He is saying and also to be further enriched by discovering what is happening in the background culturally and historically.

Jeremiah 32:6-8

What does the Bible say about getting “a word” from God? Here are 5 things that often happen when you’ve actually received an authentic word from God.

1. A Word from God Often Comes to Us at the Exact Right Moment and Relates to a Very Specific Issue We Are Having

What do I mean by this phrase “a word from God”? I’m not talking about “the word of God,” meaning the Bible. The Bible alone is inerrant. So any form of communication with God that occurs outside of the Scriptures must be used wisely and tested through a biblical lens.

So by this phrase “a word from God,” I’m talking about God communicating with you in a personal way, usually through a short statement. Perhaps you have been asking God if you should switch jobs and in prayer you feel like is saying, “Stay.” Or maybe you are praying for a loved one’s health and you read a passage in Scripture about healing and you feel a peace sweep over you. Or maybe you are asking God about someone you really like and then you see one of my videos and it’s titled, “3 Signs God Is Telling You to Date Someone.”

Are these kinds of experiences “a word from God”? They might be. They might not be. One way you can tell is if the timing matches up with your need and the wisdom offered in that word relates specifically to the issue you are currently dealing with.

For example, a lot of people just look at the titles of my videos and believe they are signs from God because the timing is perfect, but if you watch the videos and you go through the points in the videos and the content really doesn’t relate, that would not be a sign from God. But if you are asking God about someone and then a video of mine points you to a biblical truth that helps you know what God is actually saying to you about this relationship question, then that would be good evidence God is actually giving you a word.

As Psalm 34:4 says, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” God’s deliverance matched the timing of the need for deliverance and the request for deliverance.

When the timing is perfect and the word is relevant, this is a good sign it’s actually a word from God to you.

2. A Word from God Will Sometimes Be What You Want to Hear and It Will Sometimes Be What You Don’t Want to Hear

A lot of Christians fall into one of two camps when it comes to hearing from God. Some Christians tend to believe every word that matches what they want to hear is always God. These Christians are often falling into the trap as outlined in 2 Timothy 4:3, “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions . . . .”

On the other hand, other Christians tend to believe if a word does match what they want to hear this must not be God. Some people feel like God will never give them what they want because God will always be calling us to make a sacrifice. While God will call us to sacrifice some desires, we also need to remember that if a desire is biblical that desire is from God and thus God wants us to pursue that desire because he gave it to us.

One common example of this occurs when it comes to marriage. Some singles really want to be married but they feel like God is telling them to sacrifice this desire and pursue singleness. But according to 1 Corinthians 7, God is the one who gives this desire for marriage and if you are called to singleness you will be happy to be single like Paul was.

In 1 Corinthians 7:7 Paul wrote, “I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another.” Notice Paul was called to singleness and he was happy about it. When he said “I wish that all were as I myself am,” he was saying he was happy to be single and thus he wants everyone to experience this happiness. But notice that he recognized that not all have the same desires as him and thus he knew not all would be happy to be single, which is why he then says, “But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another.”

My point is, if you are someone who always hears God tell you exactly what you always want to hear, you are probably not hearing God correctly. Likewise, if you never hear God tell you what you want to hear, you too are not hearing God correctly. Sometimes a word from God will be what we want to hear and sometimes it won’t be.

May God grant us the humility to follow him always in truth.

3. A Word from God Will Guide You and Not Confuse You

I’ve had a lot of people tell me something they feel like God told them but then they ask me, “What does this mean?” In my opinion and in my view of Scripture, if God actually said something to you, it’s unlikely you will need someone else to tell you what it means. God knows how to communicate his truth to us in a way that we understand.

If you think you got a word from God but you don’t know what that word means, you probably didn’t get a word from God. As the Bible explains:

  • “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace,” (1 Corinthians 14:33). A word from God will bring you peace, not more confusion.
  • “Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you,” (Philippians 3:15). Hearing God properly is not solely dependent on us. God himself knows how to make us hear him correctly.
  • “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path,” (Psalm 119:105). A word from God will bring more light, not darkness.

the one

4. A Word Is Really from God When Things Outside of Your Control Happen That Need to Happen If This Word Was Really from God

Many people get confused because they are only looking to themselves as the evidence for what God may have said or may not have said. But we need to remember that God is sovereign over everything; therefore, if he says something to you personally, he has the power to confirm that word to you through things in the world that are completely outside of your control. As Jeremiah 32:6-8 recounts:

Jeremiah said, ‘The word of the Lord came to me: Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you and say, “Buy my field that is at Anathoth, for the right of redemption by purchase is yours.”’ Then Hanamel my cousin came to me in the court of the guard, in accordance with the word of the Lord, and said to me, ‘Buy my field that is at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for the right of possession and redemption is yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.”

Jeremiah did not have control over whether his cousin would come and ask him to buy a field. The word spoken to Jeremiah occurred like God said it would. Thus Jeremiah knew this was truly a word from God because things outside of his control occurred that confirmed this word was true.

We can control our thoughts, our feelings, and even things like our dreams can be influenced by our thoughts throughout the day before we went to bed. But when it comes to other people, places, and things, God alone will have to move the proper pieces to confirm his word. God will never speak something and then not accomplish it. If what you heard does not happen, God did not say it because God never lies (Hebrews 6:18).

Therefore, you will know a word was really from God when the things outside of your control happen that would need to happen to make this word come true.

5. A Word Is Really from God When It Is Consistent with The Word of God

The clearest way to know if a personal word from God was really from God is to compare this word to “the” word of God. We are fallible. The Bible is infallible. Our personal communication with God does not have more authority than the actual word of God given in Scripture. While God does speak to us personally, God will never contradict what he has already said in the Bible.

As Isaiah 40:8 states, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”

UhDum…you might want to look at this thread first.

Since most of us (liberal or conservative) are expository preachers; I think it’s safe to say that we all start with prayerful consideration of the text.

Personally, if I start following a road that doesn’t say what the text says or try to acomplish what the text acomplishes; then I realize that the ideas are coming from me and not from God.

Personally, I think the real miracle is not how God speaks to us as we prepare our sermons, but the way God can use even our worst sermons to speak to someone’s heart.

I think it was John Wesley who told the story about the lay preacher who preached on the text «For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow» and expounded on the fact that the man was «an oyster man» and explained the symbolism of the oyster man who every day dealt with sharp oyster shells that cut his hands; but he was a type of Christ for inviting suffering for the good of others. Story goes that Wesley couldn’t bear to correct the preacher because of the impact it had on the congregation.

Then again, there’s the case of a lay preacher I once heard who talked at length of Jesus’ eating with «Republicans and sinners,» explaining the degredation it must have been to be seen talking with the hated «Republicans.»

I’m not a preacher but have observed many over the years many. I heard one old sister tell a minister one time I didn’t get a thing out of your sermon this morning. The minister said well maybe you didn’t bring anything to get it with.

Men are selected by God to bring out those wonderful Gospel truths but unless the sheep have hearing ears, and seeing eyes, and God has prepared their hearts for the message, you might as well be preaching in the cemetary.

I read a lot of sermons over the years and most of the sermons are from those that are dead. When I read these sermons I think to myself what was the attitude of the congregation at that time. What miricles was the Lord working in the hearts of his children then. Who was brought to the realization of his salvation at that time and what was the change in their individual lives.

I think of the sermon spoken by I believe it was George Whitefield «Children In The Hands Of An Angry God» if you never had a chance to read that sermon and the effects of it by all means read it and you will see what I mean. God empowers men in his time not according to when they want it but how he will use them to instruct his children. The ministers I’ve known have always felt unworthy to even speak in his name and thats the exact type he uses to fill with his Holy Spirit. God makes sure its all of God and none of man! When preparing a lesson or a sermon — sometimes I used to find myself just paralyzed, waiting for «guidance» as to what scripture, what words to say and use. On the other hand, when preparing a lesson from a scripture already chosen, the ideas and insights will just flow, and as I work to get them together, there will come a calm assurance of the Lord’s participation in the result. Sure, the Lord has given me explicit direction in advance a time or two but those occasions are rare — rather, its normal to prepare in a workmanlike fashion and find that the Lord is blessing me as I put things together.

And then there are those precious moments when He just surprises us all with His giving of an insight and a revelation.

By way of example, once I was teach a passage on prayer and we were talking about why God wants us to pray for others. After all, He already loves them, and He already knows we love them also .. what’s the purpose of suggesting we pray? So in my human wisdom (as it seemed when I started the thought) I speculated out loud for the class, well, perhaps its because He wants us to have a share in the giving of blessings, so He reserves some blessings to be released by our prayers for others. And as I just mentioned this by way of speculation, there came an overwhelming sense of the presence of God assuring me, YES, THAT’S IT! and I had to pause, I couldn’t even continue for a couple of seconds, it was such an overpowering moment . . .

That’s the way it goes, as far as I know. So I quit worrying about selection of the text and main points. Just pick something reasonable and trust the Lord to infuse His word with His Spirit.

I agree Tom, when one is preaching in their home pulpit. But there are times when one guest preaches or fills in, and you can’t be in the middle of a series. At those times I have found that a certain passage was accentuated for me a week or two ahead fo time, and when the preaching day came, it was the perfect passage for the occassion.

    God is good! ;)

  7. TYCATES

I’ve been preaching since I was 13 so for 10 years now I’ve had 4 years of Bible college at Hyles-Anderson and I’ve picked up a few pointers along the way.
I was eating dinner with a great man of God Dr. Roberson and he said «in all of his life the greatest thing he’s ever known was that Jesus Christ died on the cross and came out of that tomb for our sins he said so always take them to the cross.»
Don’t show them what you know as you stand and preach God’s word. I used to prepare a long outline on what I was going to preach and I still do my last one was 5 typed pages but I’ve learned to leave them at my seat before I get up. The first few times was scary for me I still get nervous even after ten years but I’ve seen him work before and that’s how you develop Faith and Trust that it’s God and not you up there.
Don’t be worried about being afraid I get worried when I’m not afraid but that’s why God said he chose the meek and foolish things of this world to confound the wise.(that’s you and me)
Be yourself everybody has their own style of preaching you’ll find yours just stick with it

Actually, it’s «Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God» and it’s by Johnathan Edwards (no, not the psychic guy!!). Rev Edwards was not known for sermon topic of «God loves you». In fact, Rev Edwards’ sermon was written from a point of view that God hates us.

The sermon is very fiery and foreboding. It was reported that many people who heard it ran out of the church screaming.

I heard in college that Edwards read his sermons from a manuscript, barely above a whisper, and it terrified his congregation.

«Brothers and sister, God will kill you now… Amen!»

Two points: John Piper notes that «Sinners…» was somewhat atypical of Edwards in that he was a very pastoral preacher. Second, I believe Ellsworth has documented that Edwards also did not rely as much on a mss for preaching as is commonly thought.

Very interesting… I suspected my source (an American Lit Professor) was simply quoting what she heard when she was in college.

No matter what you think of his sermon style, God greatly used Edwards and others like him to transform North America.

I must say I’ve matured quite a bit since I started this thread…

I must admit, I have a hard time of just sitting and letting God speak to me. But you all are right…you do KNOW when He has spoken. :D

You can’t know, it is by faith only. This should put some at ease that it was ok that you have sometimes «blew it» in the past and will again in the future.

Last night I received a Word from God: He told me to test the spirits because they might be flashy, but they can still be wrong. No, I didn’t hear an audible voice telling me this. No, I didn’t see this in a dream. I sat in a service while the preacher gave me a Word From God. Let me explain.

The invitation was a surprise—just like all the other times I went to these sort of things. The lot was filled, just like always. The small, family filled chapel was packed—still unsurprising. And up front was the standard energetic speaker saying things like “You guys are enjoying this. I know that. My Spirit tells me.” and “Come on, now” and “Can I hear you say ‘WOW!’” and even “I want my spirit to wash over all of you.”

The hour long message spring boarding off Gideon was about depression, how we all have our terebinth trees where we thresh wheat where we shouldn’t, in hiding. How sometimes being a believer isn’t enough, how sometimes the word of God isn’t enough, sometimes all of his past promises aren’t enough; that at those times we need a sign from God. And God provides the sign (Come on, now). God comes to where Gideon is (can I hear an ‘Amen’?) in his state of depression and hiding and agrees to give him a sign.

But God doesn’t  stop there there (no he doesn’t: come on, come on!) sometimes we have our own little stupid ideas, the ideas we don’t share with anyone else, our own little stupid piece of wool and we bring it to the Lord to Do Something with it—and He does (come on, Amen? Come on, now). Water, in the Bible, stands for his word, for life and for grace: and your stupid little idea is drenched in Water (Can I hear you say ‘wow!’ Come on, now: say “WOW!”). And not only that, God will make sure to drench not only your idea but all those around you because it’s all about Grace (I know you guys are enjoying this) because I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for grace, I wouldn’t be a pastor if it wasn’t for grace, I wouldn’t be preaching around the world if it wasn’t for grace: Grace (congregational: amen.), Grace(congregational: Amen!), GRACE (congregational: AMEN!), GRACE (congregational: YES, LORD!), GRACE! (Can you feel it? I want my spirit to wash over all of you. I wanna’ hear you say “Wow” Come on, now)(congregational: AMEN! THANK YOU LORD! THANK YOU GOD! GRACE! GRACE!)

Well, after managing an entire meeting without mentioning Christ, the Gospel of God, or pretty much anything else based on its proper context; and while simultaneously spending more time talking about himself being a benefit for us and quoting Elijah 2 Kings 5:8, he started the prophecy hour. This is the hour where his message is confirmed by the miraculous way that he gets an impression about people and gives them a Word from God.

First were the impressions about people with depression that needed to be freed. He summoned catchers, which was good since one lady fell down in a Spiritual Swoon (although she had the presence of mind to pull up her pants and adjust her shirt so that we don’t see any unnecessary tail). Then God gave him an impression of people with headaches and high blood pressure who needed to be freed. He summoned catchers while speaking in tongues (and pointing unnecessarily, I guess).

Next God gave him an impression about Me, Rey. I knew it was going to happen, of course. Every time I’m in a charismatic church, the speaker, the pastors, the leaders, or the people are always led by the Holy Spirit to pray for me. I have one of those faces that need a blessing and unshackling, I guess.

So he came down the aisle, asks me my name, if I go to church, and if he can pray for me. First he revealed his anointing by unveiling everything I ever did. Okay, not really but he did tell the congregation that I (the guy who was sitting on the first seat inside the aisle who didn’t clap, amen or laugh once during the meeting) am strong-willed,  decisive, that I know want and I do it, that  I’m a leader and I’m in ministry. Then he proceeded to pray.

After the meeting, my friend told me that this was only the second time at this church but since the guy so called me out and totally nailed who I was, the message was confirmed: it was a speaking of God and he’d have to stick around with this church.

I told my friend “Just remember to test the spirits.”

“Totally and a test is if they’re doing the same miraculous things Christ did—that sure looked like it!”

“Well, that might be part of it” I said ignoring making a sticking point about the very  minor part of the whole thing “but really examine the spirit behind the message. Is it the message that Christ would have preached? Would it have consumed the apostles?”

So yeah, God spoke to me last night. He said to watch out with this stuff where people use signs and wonders to confirm the preaching of Anything.

For you recall, brethren, our labor and hardship, how working
night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed
to you the gospel of God. 10 You are witnesses, and so is God, how
devoutly and uprightly and blamelessly we behaved toward you
believers; 11 just as you know how we were exhorting and
encouraging and imploring each one of you as a father would his own
children, 12 so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God
who calls you into His own kingdom and glory. 13 For this reason we
also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God
which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men,
but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its
work in you who believe. 14 For you, brethren, became imitators of
the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, for you also
endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own countrymen,
even as they did from the Jews, 15 who both killed the Lord Jesus
and the prophets, and drove us out. They are not pleasing to God,
but hostile to all men, 16 hindering us from speaking to the
Gentiles so that they may be saved; with the result that they
always fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon
them to the utmost.

As we began prayer week with a call to be devoted to prayer from
Romans 12:12, so we end prayer week with a call to embrace the
Bible as the very word of God. My emphasis, just like last week,
will be on the practical: How? How do you receive the Bible as the
word of God?

My text is 1 Thessalonians 2:13, «For this reason we also
constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which
you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for
what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in
you who believe.» From all the things we could talk about here, I
want to focus on the words «you accepted it not as the word of men,
but for what it really is, the word of God.»

I would make three observations about this. 1) The apostolic
word is the word of God. 2) When it comes to us objectively, we
should accept it subjectively in the right way. 3) The way to do
that in 2003 is to embrace it as precious, pleasant, and practical,
which means, in practice (five M’s): to memorize it, meditate
on it, make music with it, minister with it, and mind it.

The Apostolic Word Is the Word of God

Paul says in verse 13, «When you received the word of God which
you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for
what it really is, the word of God.» Paul claims that his apostolic
teaching is the word of God.

That is what it meant for Jesus to choose and appoint apostles.
The words of an apostle, when he teaches or writes as one of
Jesus’ apostles, is the Word of God. The definition of the
word «apostle» is one who is sent to represent another person with
authority. Jesus said to the apostles in John 16:13, «When the
Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he
will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will
speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.»
Jesus made plans that would insure the truth of the apostolic
teaching about himself in the early church. And that is what came
to be written down in our New Testament for our rule and
authority.

The way this worked itself out in Paul’s experience is
described in 1 Corinthians 2:13, where Paul says, «And we impart
this [wisdom] in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the
Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.»
This meant that Paul’s teaching was in fact the word of God.
It had divine truthfulness and divine authority. Two times in 2
Corinthians Paul refers to this God-given authority that the Lord
had given him as an apostle. For example, 2 Corinthians 10:8, «For
even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord
gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be
ashamed» (see 13:10).

We can see this divine authority in action when Paul writes to
the Corinthians about people who were claiming to have revelatory
experiences. He puts his authority over against theirs and says
that his teaching as an apostle is the measuring rod. «If anyone
thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge
that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. If
anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized (1 Corinthians
14:37-38).

Peter confirms this divine authority that Paul had as an apostle
by describing his writings as in the same category with the
inspired scriptures of the Old Testament. You recall that 2 Timothy
3:16 says, «All Scripture is inspired by God.» Then Peter says in 2
Peter 3:15-16, «Our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you
according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters
when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in
them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable
twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.»
«The other Scriptures» shows that Peter put Paul’s letters in
the category with God’s inspired and authoritative
scriptures.

I know this is not a proof from outside the Bible that the Bible
is the word of God. It is a claim within the Bible that that is
what the Bible is – the word of God. That is where I leave it
this morning. But if you want to ponder more on why we believe the
Bible is the word of God, plan to come to that TBI seminar that I
teach, and read some good defenses of the Scriptures in our
bookstore, and consider this summary statement from the old
Keach’s Catechism:

The Bible evidences itself to be God’s Word by the heavenliness
of its doctrine, the unity of its parts, its power to convert
sinners and to edify saints; but the Spirit of God only, bearing
witness by and with the Scriptures in our hearts, is able fully to
persuade us that the Bible is the Word of God.

There are many kinds of arguments for embracing the scriptures
as God’s word. But this morning my point is to simply show
that the Bible teaches that the apostolic word is the word of
God.

When the Word of God Comes to Us Objectively, We Should accept
It Subjectively in the Right Way

Again 1 Thessalonians 2:13, «When you received the word of God
which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men,
but for what it really is, the word of God.»

The words for «received» and «accepted» are not the same. They
«received» the word of God means that it came to them in objective
form. It was handed on to them like a tradition. Paul preached it
objectively. It would have been the word of God whether they
accepted it or not. There is an objective word of God. That’s
one of the differences between an orthodox view of Scripture and a
neo-orthodox view which says that the word of man becomes the word
of God if we receive it as such. But it is not the word of God
objectively until we receive it that way.

That is not what Paul says in verse 13. Paul says that his
preaching was «really» or «truly» the word of God and they
«accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the
word of God.» The word of man does not become the word of God
because it is accepted as the word of God. We accept it because it
is the word of God. The apostolic word really is the word of God,
objectively, apart from our subjective attitude toward it.

Our accepting it does not make it the word of God, we accept it
because it is the word of God. The word «accepted» means more than
«receive» as we receive a tradition handed on to us. It means
«welcome.» It means «embrace» as what it is. We can see this use in
1 Corinthians 2:14. Right after Paul says that he teaches in words
taught by the Holy Spirit he adds, «The natural person does not
accept [same word] the things of the Spirit of God, for they are
folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they
are spiritually discerned.»

So the point of 1 Thessalonians 2:13 is that there is a right
way to accept or welcome the teachings of the Bible when we receive
it. And the right way is to accept it for what it really is, the
very word of God. We should embrace it and welcome it as the word
of God, because it is the word of God. It is God’s truth and
has God’s authority. It is the rule for all other claims to
truth and the rule over all other authority. We should embrace it
that way.

Now how do we do that? What does it look like to welcome the
Scriptures as the word of God? I have a three-fold answer from the
context of Thessalonians and a five-fold answer by implication
based on what the Bible says elsewhere about how to use it.

The Way to Welcome the Word of God in 2003

Embrace it as precious, pleasant, and practical, which means, in
practice (five M’s): to memorize it, meditate on it, make
music with it, minister with it, and mind it.

Let’s start with the three fold answer from the
context.

Notice the link between the context of verse 14 and the context
of 1:6-7. Verse
14 says that the evidence that the Thessalonians
accepted the word of God for what it really is was that they
suffered for it. «For you, brethren, became imitators of the
churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, for you also
endured the same sufferings at the hands of your own
countrymen.»

Now compare that to 1 Thessalonians 1:6-7 and you will see that
we are in the same context: «And you became imitators of us and of
the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the
joy of the Holy Spirit, 7 so that you became an example to all the
believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.»

Notice three things about how they received the word.

1.They received the word even though it meant
«much affliction.» From that I infer that they welcomed the word as
precious. To have it and believe it and trust in it was worth more
than comfort and safety. It was a treasure. They accepted suffering
rather than give it up. So the right way to accept the word of God
is to accept it as precious – more precious than possessions
and life.

2.They received the word in this affliction
with the «joy of the Holy Spirit.» From that I infer that they
welcomed the word of God as pleasant. It produces joy. Precious and
pleasant.

These two words remind us of what Psalm 19:10 says about
God’s words: «More to be desired are they than gold, even
much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the
honeycomb.» Gold is precious. Honey is pleasant. When we experience
the word of God as more precious than gold and more pleasant than
honey we will have embraced the word of God the way we should.

3.Third, they received the word as practical.
It changed their lives in visible ways. I infer that from verse 7.
«So that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia
and in Achaia.» This is what Paul’s word did when they
received it as what it really was, the word of God. It was
practical and life-changing.

So the answer to the question, «How do your accept or welcome
and embrace the Bible as the word of God the way you should?» is
accept it or embrace it as precious, pleasant, and practical. More
precious than gold, more pleasant than honey, practical enough to
change your life.

Now let’s get as practical as we can for what we should
actually do with the Bible this year. If the aim is to embrace it
as precious, pleasant, and practical, what would you do with
it?

The way to welcome the Bible in 2003 as precious, pleasant, and
practical is to memorize it, meditate on it, make music with it,
minister with it, and mind it.

1. Memorize It

If the word of God is more precious to you than gold and more
pleasant than honey and more practical than all human counsel, then
you will want to memorize it. And the reason is that the
preciousness of it is not mainly in having it in a book, but having
it in your mind and in your heart – that’s where you
experience its preciousness.

And the pleasantness of it is not that it lies in a book, but
that it lies in your mind and in your heart so that you can taste
it any time you want. Honey will not do you any good at all in a
jar in the cabinet. It is good on your tongue. That is where the
sweetness of Scripture is when you memorize it.

All the other ways of welcoming the word that I am about to
mention are helped and advanced by this one. Memorizing the word
helps you meditate on it day and night. Memorizing helps you make
music with it. Memorizing helps you minister it to others in needs
when there is no Bible to read. And a word of Scripture from your
heart is more powerful in ministry any way. And memorizing helps
you mind Scripture.

Psalm 119:11 says, «I have stored up your word in my heart, that
I might not sin against you.» So memorizing and treasuring the word
in your heart helps you triumph over sin. Just like John writes in
1 John 2:14, «I write to you, young men, because you are strong,
and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil
one.» When the word of God abides in us we have a tremendous
advantage over sin and Satan. Jesus put Satan to flight every time
in the wilderness by quoting memorized Scripture.

Use the Fighter Verse
program with the list of verses given out today and how to do
it. Or go beyond that and get the little booklet by Andrew Davis, «An
Approach to the Extended Memorization of Scripture,» and let
him show you how to memorize chapters and books of the Bible.

One of the clearest links between last week’s sermon and
this one is that our prayers are made more powerful when they are
saturated with the Bible and that happens for people who memorize
scripture. People who don’t memorize scripture generally pray
in clichés. And their language of prayer tends to be the way
an unbeliever would pray. Those who do memorize scripture are
always enriching their prayers with the very word of God. Remember
Romans 8:27: God hears the prayers of the Spirit on our behalf
because he prays «according to God.» A believer should distrust his
needs and seek God’s word for what he really needs and pray
for that.

2. Meditate on the Word of God

Psalm 1:2 says that the blessed man – the man whose life
is like a fruitful tree planted by streams of water –
delights in the law of the Lord, «and on his law he meditates day
and night.» To meditate means to read it, ponder it, think about
it, query it, and relate it to as many other truths as you can.
Paul puts it this way in 2 Timothy 2:7, «Think over what I say, for
the Lord will give you understanding in everything.» The Lord gives
understanding, but we must think, that is, meditate.

From all the Scripture that you read in the morning, I suggest
that you take one verse in your mind, memorized – and perhaps
on a small piece of paper in case you need review. And let that be
the focus of meditation all day long. Come back to it again and
again. Relate it to all you do.

And meditation is not just intellectual. It is emotional.
Meditation is cherishing the gold and savoring the honey. If you
don’t feel this cherishing and savoring, ask the Lord to
waken the spiritual taste buds of your soul. He won’t do it
apart from the word. The word is part of what creates the taste for
the word. Put it on the tongue of your soul. He wakens your heart
to taste Christ in his word. So take the honey of the word into
your mind and ask him to create a taste for it.

3. Make Music with It

I get this from Colossians 3:16. «Let the word of Christ dwell
in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,
singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in
your hearts to God.» Notice how the word is to dwell richly in you:
namely, by «singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.»

Sing the word to yourself. And sing the word in your family. And
sing the word in church. Most good hymns and worship songs are
permeated with Scripture. We will sing one in just a few minutes:
«Thy Word Is a Lamp Unto My Feet,» which is based on Psalm
119:105.

4. Minister with the Word

I don’t have preachers in mind here. I have you all in
mind and what the Bible says every Christian should do for other
Christians (and unbelievers) day in and day out (on the phone, in
an email, on the street, in the office, in small groups, in the
hospital, in the living room with the family). «Take care,
brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart,
leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one
another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’
that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin»
(Hebrews 3:12-13). What do you exhort with? Not your wisdom. That
is hopeless. We exhort with the word of God. Faith comes by hearing
and hearing by the word of God. So speak it to help people in the
fight of faith.

Oh, how important it is to store up the Word of God in your mind
and heart if you want to minister to people and help them fight the
fight of faith day by day. Parents for children, children for your
friends. Small groups to each other. Students to roommates. What we
need from each other is the word of God. When I am confused, give
me the word of God. When I am arrogant, give me the word of God.
When I am lustful, give me the word of God. When I am frightened,
give me the word of God. When I am suffering, give me the word of
God. When I am angry, give me the word of God. When I am dying,
give me the word of God. Minster to me. I plead with you. All who
have any access to me, give me the word of God.

5. Mind the Word of God

That is, obey it. This is part of the great commission. «Go
therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you» (Matthew
28:19-20).

Right after saying that the word is more precious than gold and
sweeter than honey Psalm 19:11 says, «Moreover, by them is your
servant
warned; in keeping them there is great reward.» The word of
God is not a burden to those who love God. Here is the great test:
Do you love God? 1 John 5:3 puts the test plainly. «This is the
love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments
are not burdensome.»

This is my prayer for 2003, that we will
welcome the Bible as the word of God. That we will embrace it as
more precious than gold and more pleasant than honey and more
practical than all human wisdom.
And as an expression of
that embrace and as a means to that embrace that we would memorize
it extensively, and meditate on it day and night, and make music
with it from our hearts, and minister with it to sustain each
other’s faith, and mind it without it being burdensome.

I close with this one last observation from the text. Paul said
in 1 Thessalonians 2:13, «We also constantly thank God that when
you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted
it not as the word of men.» He thanked God they embraced his
message as the word of God. That means we can add one more «M» to
our list of five. Embracing the Bible as the word of God is a
«mercy» from God. It is a merciful gift. And for that I pray.

This article will serve as a good followup to an an article we just released titled, “How to be Led by the Holy Spirit.”

In that article, we gave you 8 basic ways in which the Lord will use to supernaturally communicate to us in this life.

In this new article, I now want to take you one step further and show you how to properly test any type of supernatural communication you may receive so you know for sure the word you are receiving is really coming from the Lord and not from your own imagination or from a demon.

Many Christians do not properly test any type of supernatural communication they receive and as a result, they sometimes get duped by a demon who is trying to masquerade as the Lord with the message he is giving to them.

Below I will give you 8 very basic tests that you can use to test any type of supernatural communication you think you are receiving.

The word “test” means to carefully analyze, scrutinize – to prove and to try.

Remember, if you are receiving any type of supernatural words or messages, it is either coming from one of three sources:

  • From the Lord Himself
  • From your own mind and imagination, as the OT has told us how some prophets would prophesy out of their imagination
  • Or it could be coming from a demonic spirit who is trying to knock you off course

As we have said in our first article on how to be led by the Holy Spirit, do not be afraid if sometimes you miss this, as all of this is a learning process with the Lord.

You will learn how to hear from God through a process of trial and error with Him. And just because demons can try and mess with us at times does not mean you want to totally shut God down with the different ways He will use to supernaturally communicate to us in this life.

God was constantly communicating to His people back in both the OT and NT, and He still wants to do it in this day and age since He is the same today as He was yesterday. We just have to learn how to do this with Him.

Now I will break down these 8 different ways on how to test a word from the Lord so you will know for sure that the word you are receiving is really coming directly from Him and not from your own imagination or a demon.

How To Test Any Type of Supernatural Communication You May Receive

Before I get into the 8 different ways in which you can test any type of supernatural, divine communication you think you may be receiving, here are a few good verses from the Bible showing us that we have to test these kinds of supernatural things out when we do receive them.

  • “Test all things; hold fast what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21)
  • “For Satan himself transforms himself into an ANGEL OF LIGHT. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.” (2 Corinthians 11:14)
  • “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, BUT TEST THE SPIRITS, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.” (1 John 4:1-4)

The first verse hits the nail right on the head when it tells us to test all things. And all things means any kind of supernatural communication you think you are receiving, including those that are coming direct from the Lord.

God will not be offended if you attempt to test what He is trying to tell you. He will want you to test it, otherwise He would have never put the above verses in His Word. Too many Christians have been seriously hurt over the years because they have never stopped to test the words they were receiving.

Here are the 8 basic tests you can use to test any type of supernatural communication you think you may be receiving. I will first list them out in a bolded, numbered format so you can have them right at the top of this section. Here they are:

  • Does the Word Line Up With Scripture?
  • Does the Word Line Up With the Character of God?
  • Does the Word Line Up With What God is Doing With Your Life?
  • Does Your Spirit Bear Witness With the Word?
  • There is Safety in the Multitude of Counselors
  • Ask God to Confirm the Word For You
  • Will the Word Glorify God?
  • Will the Word Produce Liberty or Bondage?

Now here is a breakdown on each one of these 8 tests so you will know how to use each one of them to properly test any type of supernatural word you think you may be receiving from the Lord.

1. Does the Word Line Up With Scripture?

This is without a doubt the first test you must use to make sure that what you are receiving is truly coming from the Lord. If the word or message does not pass this first test, then you have to immediately throw it out, as it is no longer trustworthy.

This first test is that the word and message that you are are receiving has to line up with the Word of God – the Bible. God will never go against His own Word. And if the message you are receiving is not lining up with Scripture or is blatantly going against Scripture, you have to immediately discard it – no questions asked!

Here are some examples of where you can receive a false word that will not be lining up with Scripture:

a)  If you are dating a girl and all of a sudden you think you are receiving a word from the Lord that it would be alright for you to start having sex with her, that word will not be from the Lord.

This would be the sin of fornication and this sin is specifically mentioned in the Bible numerous times. Thus the word you are receiving cannot be trusted as being a pure true word from the Lord, as God would never go against one of His own basic commands in the Bible.

Demons love to try and get people off track by committing these types of sins, so do not fall for it if you think that type of word is coming in on you. Immediately rebuke the demon and tell him to leave you in the name of Jesus if you ever feel that kind of false word is coming in on you.

b)  If you are married and you are starting to have some troubles in your marriage, and then all of a sudden you feel like you have received a word that it would be alright to start having an affair with someone else because you are no longer happy and fulfilled in your marriage – again, do not fall for for it.

This would be adultery, and the Bible has the sin of adultery listed as one of the 10 commandments. Again, God would never, ever tell you to commit this sin, as this would be going against His own direct Word on this topic.

Believe it or not, we have heard from numerous Christians over the years who felt they were receiving this kind of word and release from the Lord due to the bad state of their marriage.

In each case, we told these people that God would in no way authorize this kind of sinful behavior and that they could not act on it, as this word was not coming in from the Lord. This word was either coming in from their own imagination and their own desires, since they were no longer happy in their marriages, or it was coming in from a demon.

c)  Another very interesting area where this test will come into play is when a Christian is dating an unbeliever. They then all of a sudden think they have received a release and a word from the Lord to marry this person, even though their partner still has not been saved and still has not shown any interests on getting saved.

Again, the Bible tells us not to be yoked together with unbelievers, and if you marry this unbeliever, you are definitely going to be yoked together with them, thus violating this basic command from the Bible.

Unless God is making a strong move to get your dating partner saved, I would never commit to marrying this person, as the Bible is very clear on this command. Once again, here is this verse if you were not aware that it was in the Bible:

“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God.” (2 Corinthians 6:14)

I had a friend from work who married an unbeliever and within one year, the entire marriage blew up and she was divorced several months later. There was no anointing on this marriage because God never authorized it in the first place because she was violating this basic verse from Scripture on not being yoked together with an unbeliever.

I could go on and on with more examples, but the point to get is to make sure the word you are receiving is lining up with the Bible. If you are a bit weak in the Bible, then talk to your pastor or to another Christian who does know their Bible and then run the word by them. They should be able to tell you if the word is lining up with Scripture or not.

2. Does the Word Line Up With the Character of God?

Another basic test that you have to use is to make sure the word you are receiving is lining up with the character and personality of God Himself. In other words, is this something that God would really ask you to do or tell you to do? Is this one of His ways?

The closer you get to God in your own personal relationship with Him, and the more time you spend reading the Bible, the better you will get to know God. And the better you get to know God, the better you will be able to see and discern if a word is lining up with His character and personality.

Many Christians get burned in this area because they are not walking close to God nor have they spent much time in the Bible. As a result, they really do not know God and they thus are easier pickings for demons to give them false words of guidance.

Again, if you think you are receiving a word, but you may not be really close to God, ask several other Christians who do have close walks with the Lord and who do know their Bible and their God. They should be able to help you with the word you think you are receiving.

Where this particular test will come in is when you receive a word, but there is really nothing in Scripture on it. If there is nothing in the Bible on it, then you will really need to apply this test to it to see if the word is lining up with the character and personality of God Himself.

3. Does the Word Line Up With What God is Doing With Your Life?

Sometimes the word you may receive has to be analyzed to see if it will fit into what God has already been doing with your life. The Bible tells us that God is one One who will build the “house” of our lives. As a result, any word that you receive that has to do with your big picture with the Lord has to be carefully analyzed and see if it fits into what God has already been doing with your life.

If God is calling you to be an attorney, and He is building you up in that area so you can enter into that calling when the time is right, God is not going to be throwing you a curve ball and all of a sudden ask you to go off into the far reaches of Africa to do missionary work for the next 20 years of your life.

If God is going to put a call on your life, then He is going to carefully build you up in that call so you can enter into it when the time is right. Demons love to try and knock Christians off course by trying to give them a false word to try something else different so they can knock them right out of their calls with the Lord.

There have been documented cases of Christians thinking they have received a word from the Lord to go off and be missionaries. Without seeking or getting any type of confirmation that this word was really from the Lord, they immediately pack up their bags and leave for the missionary fields. And then a year or two later, they are flat broke, all beat up, and they then return back home with absolutely no success on the missionary fields.

The reason they were not successful was because God never called them to do this in the first place. And since God never called them to do this, there was no anointing on their efforts. And with there being no anointing to do this, they had no basic protection, provision, favor, money, or supplies coming to them when they were needing it.

In other words, there was no divine support for them because they were out of the will of God and they were either following their own imaginations and desires, or they got played and duped by a demon. That is why you have to carefully analyze and test any type of divine communication you think you are receiving – to make sure that it really is the Lord talking to you and not your own imagination and desires, or possibly a demon.

Again, if you are receiving a word from the Lord that has to do with what He is calling you to do in this life, make sure that you carefully analyze this word to see if it fits into what He has already been doing with your life and with what He has already built up in your life.

4. Does Your Spirit Bear Witness With the Word?

As we explained to you in our article, “How to be Led by the Holy Spirit,” the number one way the Holy Spirit will communicate to you in this life is through the inner witness – the inner knowing. If you are receiving a true word from the Lord, the Holy Spirit should be bearing witness with that word out of your own human spirit.

So the next test will be – does your own spirit bear good witness with the word, since the Holy Spirit lives in your human spirit and that is where He will be bearing witness at.

If you are not getting a good witness from the Holy Spirit, or the witness feels really flat and dull, then stop and ask God the Father for confirmation to make sure this word is really coming from Him. Not getting a good witness from the Holy Spirit is always a major red flag, since the Holy Spirit is always in perfect unity and harmony with both God the Father and Jesus Christ.

5. There is Safety in the Multitude of Counselors

Another test you can use is to run the word by a few other seasoned Christians who really know their Bible and their God. The Bible tells us that there is safety in the multitude of counselors. Sometimes another seasoned Christian will be able to see something with the word that you are not seeing.

Here are several good verses from the Bible telling us that we can do this with the Lord:

  • “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” (Proverbs 11:14)
  • “A wise man is strong, yes, a man of knowledge increases strength; for by wise counsel you will wage your own war, and in a multitude of counselors there is safety.” (Proverbs 24:5)
  • “Every purpose is established by counsel; by wise counsel wage war.” (Proverbs 20:18)
  • “Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established.” (Proverbs 15:22)
  • “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days.” (Proverbs 19:20)
  • “Cease listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.” (Proverbs 19:27)

As you can see from the way these verses are being worded, God does want you to consult with other wise and seasoned Christians from time to time depending on exactly what it is that you are dealing with.

And sometimes when you think you are receiving a word from the Lord, you may need to run this word by a few of these wise and seasoned Christians so you can make sure that you are reading the word correctly, and that the word is really coming in from the Lord and not from a demon or your own mind and imagination.

So if need be, do not be afraid to run your word by a few other wise Christians if you are not 100% sure the word is from the Lord. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes are needed to see what the real truth is and whether or not the word is truly coming from the Lord.

This is why the Lord has given us the above verses, to let us know that sometimes we will need help from other Christians due to our own imperfections and possible shortsightedness.

6. Ask God to Confirm the Word For You

Another big thing you can do if you are not quite sure the word is from the Lord is to just go back to God in prayer and ask Him to confirm His word for you.

This is one area that gets many Christians into major trouble. They receive a quick word, but instead of properly testing it and/or asking God to help confirm the word for them, they immediately take off running with the word. And if that word was not from the Lord, they then end up taking a major wrong turn in their life and serious damage can be done as a result.

Marrying the wrong person because you did not wait for more confirmation from God, or taking the wrong job at the wrong time could all lead to disastrous results. The bigger and more serious the word is, the more you have to properly test it and get God’s confirmation to make sure that it really is Him talking to you.

Many Christians have ended up marrying the wrong people in this life because they did not wait for God’s confirmation to the original word. Again, demons love nothing more than to try and knock you off course by trying to get you to marry the wrong person or take the wrong jobs in this life. This is why you should never be afraid to ask God to confirm His own word for you.

The way God can confirm His own Word for you can be done in many different ways.

The Bible says that out of the mouth of two or three witnesses every word will be established. What people have found out is that sometimes God will cause two or three witnesses to come up to you in close proximity and basically tell you the same thing that God told you in the original word.

These two or three witnesses could be total strangers or people you already know, but in either case, they will know nothing about the original word that was given to you by the Lord.

Another way God could confirm the word for you is through the gift of prophesy. All of sudden you will have someone prophesying over you telling you basically the same thing you were told with the original word. Many times prophecy is used by God to help confirm what was already given to you by Him. And the person prophesying over you will have no prior knowledge of the original word given to you by the Lord.

When you get a person prophesying over you, or two or three witnesses coming up to you who have no prior knowledge of what God had told you – and they then tell you basically the same thing that God had originally told you – this will be so supernatural, that is how you will know that it really was God talking to you in the first place and not your own imagination or a demon.

God can also use dreams, visions, or possibly a very strong witness from the Holy Spirit Himself to help confirm for you that the word was really from Him.

Again, just ask God to confirm the word for you if you are not sure, and then watch and wait for that confirmation to come to you if the word was truly from the Lord. You will know the confirmation when it does come to you from the Lord. You will not be able to miss it, because many of these confirmations will be so supernatural and “so in your face.”

7. Will the Word Glorify God?

Another test you will want to use is to make sure any words, messages, or guidance you are receiving from the Lord will always bring Him all of the glory. Always remember – we work, live, and die for the Lord. We work for Him in this life, not for ourselves or for our own glory.

Many secular men and woman in this world only work for their own self-interests and their own glory in this life. It is all about them, and anything they achieve and accomplish in this life is all for their own ego.

They work for themselves, they do not work for God. As Christians, we always have to remember that these divine calls and assignments are all coming direct from the Lord, not from us or the world in general.

As a result, we always have to remember that we work for the Lord in this life, not for ourselves, our parents, our friends, or the world in general. This is why you always have to make sure that anything you do in this life will always bring all of the glory to the Lord.

Demons are all about their own glory and their own self-exaltation, as that is what got Satan thrown out of heaven.

As a result, they will try to get people to think it is all about them rather than the Lord. Satan fell as a result of this kind of prideful, evil, and wrong thinking, and he still wants to try and bring down as many people as he can through this same type of prideful and evil thinking.

The devil’s tactics are always the same. Inflate the ego, get major pride worked into someone’s personality, and then it won’t be long until that person takes his eyes off God and then places it all on his own self. And from there, it will only be a matter of time before they fall and lose it all, as the Bible tells us that pride and a haughty spirit will come before the fall.

Here are 5 very good verses showing us that all of the glory always belongs to the Lord, not to us:

  • “I am the Lord, that is My name; and My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to graven images.” (Isaiah 42:8)
  • “Therefore let no one glory in men. For all things all yours …” (1 Corinthians 3:21)
  • “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
  • ” … that no flesh should glory in His presence.” (1 Corinthians 1:29)
  • “So on a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat on his throne and gave an oration to them. And the people kept shouting, “The voice of a god and not of a man!” Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died.” ( Acts 12:22-23)

The very last verse is rather bone-chilling, as an angel of the Lord literally struck a man dead as a result of him trying to steal the glory that only belongs to the Lord.

By always remembering to make sure that all of your activities for God always bring Him all of the glory, this will really help you in making sure that you never take your eyes and attention off the Lord and then start to place too much of it on your own self.

8. Will the Word Produce Liberty or Bondage?

The last test you will want to use on any type of word you think you are receiving is to make sure the word will lead to liberty and not to any type of bondage and fear.

The Bible says that where the Spirit of the Lord is at, there is liberty and freedom.

Here is this most important verse, along with two others that will show you that the Lord is all about liberty and freedom – not fear, intimidation, and bondage.

  • “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” (2 Corinthians 3:17)
  • “For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!” (Romans 8:15)
  • “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me … to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound …” (Isaiah 61:1)

If you are a Christian woman dating a Christian man, and this man has been severely verbally abusing you during most of your dating life, and then all of a sudden you think you are receiving a word from the Lord to marry this man, this word will have major red flags all over it.

If you are in a verbally abusive relationship, you are in a certain amount of bondage. And if you marry this man, you will go into even more bondage, as you will now have to put up with that verbal abuse 24/7 as compared to what you had to put up with in the dating relationship.

Unless God is making a strong move to get your partner cleaned up, I would not commit to marrying this kind of man, as many of the times the abuse will only get worse once you marry him.

Too many women marry abusive men thinking or hoping they will change once they get married. But most of the time they never do unless God Himself makes a strong move to convict them and get them cleaned up.

Again, demons would love nothing more than to try and get you to marry into an abusive relationship so they can use this abusive person to try and control you and completely destroy your life. That is why you always have to make sure that any words you are receiving from the Lord will lead to liberty and freedom, not to any type of bondage, fear, or slavery.

Conclusion

If you use the above 8 tests to test any type of divine communication you think you are receiving, they should for the most part be able to tell you what is truly coming from the Lord, and what may be coming from your own natural desires and imagination, or from a demonic spirit.

Again, it is extremely important that you test all supernatural communication you think you are receiving, as believing and acting on a false word could either destroy your life, or cause major delays to occur with what God is doing with your life.

If demons cannot kill you, they will either try and paralyze you, or knock you off the path that God has set up for your life.

That is why all supernatural communication has to be tested – to make sure that it really is coming in from the Lord and not from your own imagination or from a demon.

Many Christians have been seriously burned and hurt because they did not properly test a word that was coming to them. They have either married the wrong people, took the wrong jobs, or hung out with the wrong people.

As a result, they either lost their calls and their divine destinies with the Lord, or they lost valuable years in that call due to having to deal with the consequences and repercussions of making those wrong turns in the roadway.

And this was all because they jumped the gun too quickly and did not properly test the word they were receiving – especially words of actual guidance like who they should be marrying and what jobs they should be taking in this life.

We do not want to scare anyone away from learning how to hear from God and how to be led by Him in this life. Every Christian can learn how to do this, but you always have to remember that we still live in a fallen, cursed, and imperfect world with demons still being allowed to roam in the air.

As a result, we always have to filter any type of supernatural communication we think we are receiving through some of the above tests so we can make sure that we are on safe ground and that the word we have received has truly come to us from the Lord.

The spread of the coronavirus worldwide has undeniably become a global concern. That is why a Christian leader stood up for a call to prayer among Christians to end coronavirus.

Christian Doctor Who Discovered Novel Coronavirus Dies And Leaves A Tearjerking Poem

According to CBN News, author and prophet Cindy Jacobs of Generals International initiated the global day of prayer. She said she “received word from God.” A word urging believers to pray and a “subsequent message from the Holy Spirit directing that the effort be “a global gathering.”

Global Day Of Prayer To End Coronavirus

Hence, on March 3, the global day of prayer occurred. Every believer united in prayer addressing the unlikely impact of the coronavirus. It brought together Christians around the world regardless of church denomination.

“A coalition of Christians across denominational lines … to pray for an end to the coronavirus.”

Cindy revealed to CBN that “After seeking wisdom and prophetic counsel from prophets across the nation and world, we believe strongly that since this is a worldwide issue, it’s going to take the whole Church to cry out together for the mercy and healing power of God to contain it.”

This effort referenced from 2 Chronicles 7:14 in the Bible. And this was also the center verse on the day of the prayer.

“If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Prayer And Fasting

Moreover, Christian leaders are encouraging participants to fast as they pray for God to stop the spread of coronavirus. Also, to include in the prayer and fasting the healing of those directly infected. And comfort for those indirectly affected by its consequences.

Leaders also gave prayer points to global intercessors such as:

  • As you pray for your families and nations, center your intercession around the promise of Psalm 91: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
  • Petition the Lord to shield us from fear, and that we might invoke the reality of 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
  • As you intercede for our civil officials, health care professionals and law enforcement and emergency personnel, pray that they may lead with wisdom, work skillfully and be protected from the spread of the virus.
  • Pray that your fellow Christians will serve boldly and will courageously share the Word effectively as they encounter those with physical and spiritual needs during this time of crisis.

How to Receive God's Word

How to Receive God’s Word: Read, Study, Meditate

It is an amazing thing that God reveals himself to us by speaking.

Before we identify God’s word with a leather-bound Bible, first consider the concept of God speaking. He communicates himself — he reveals and expresses himself to humanity — not simply in a proposition, but in a person. That’s why Jesus is called the Word: “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was toward God, he was in the beginning with God.” Jesus is the full embodiment of God’s Word. When God has something to say — something to reveal, something to communicate to humanity — he reveals it in the God-man, Jesus. He is the climactic expression of God’s Word, the Word incarnate.

But there’s also the Word spoken. This is the way that Word is used most in the New Testament. Again and again, we find out that the Word (or the message of the gospel) is what has come to a people and been embraced for salvation. People have heard and believed this message about Jesus. So it’s not just this personal Jesus about whom we can make up our own message about. There’s a very particular message — a particular work and message — that goes with this person, Jesus. They’re bound up together. So the gospel word is essential to what God is communicating to humanity and expressing about himself.

Finally, there’s the word written. This is the word in Scripture — the Bible. How do we access the Word incarnate and the word spoken? We do so through the word written. That’s what God has given us this side of heaven. He has given us his word written to access the true message of the gospel and to access Jesus himself as the full expression of God’s Word.

The Word Consumed

But how do we take in God’s word? Let me give you three categories for how we receive his word as we begin to develop various habits of grace. The first is reading the Word. We read the Word when we take it in in real time. Whether someone else is reading it and we’re hearing it, or whether we’re reading it with our own eyes, taking it in at regular speed—that’s reading the Word.

Second, studying is where we slow down, ask questions, try to put pieces together, and see what we’re not getting when we’re reading. If the Bible really is a book from God, it wouldn’t make sense for we humans to understand every word of it the first time we heard it. For your whole life there will be things that you don’t understand in the Bible. So study is the way that we engage with it, the way we slow down and try to figure out answers to questions we have so we can better understand what we’re reading.

Finally, the third category is meditation. Meditation is very underrated, it’s often forgotten, and it’s actually the way that the Bible talks most often about how we are supposed to receive God’s word. Reading gets it into our heads, study clarifies the meaning, but meditation is when we chew on what God has said, when we marvel at it and when we apply it to our hearts. The highest point of hearing God’s word or taking in the Bible is meditation.

How do we put the three together? Here’s an illustration: I can rake the yard and, in a fairly short amount of time, the work is done. Raking is like reading. Digging is more like study; it takes more work and you’ll probably have a sore back the next day, but what you accomplish in digging can be much greater. Meditation is like sitting on the front porch with a glass of lemonade and enjoying the work that’s already been accomplished. Meditation is marveling — enjoying, sitting back, applying the message to your heart, appreciating what you’ve just seen in God’s word.

When it comes to reading and studying the Bible, we want to move toward the enjoyment of Jesus in the Word—toward marveling, toward being astounded by him.

Another way to put it this: reading is like watching a movie in real time. Study is like slowing it down, going into slow-mo, watching where the computer generated graphics are, where the person is coming in and out of the frame. It’s about trying to slow it down and understand everything a bit better. Meditation is like a freeze-frame. At a great moment, you pause the movie and reflect on what’s happened in the story. You reflect on that one moment and appreciate what’s happening.

To put it yet another way: reading is like surveying a forest. Study is like finding a tree, chopping it up into logs. Meditation is like putting them on a fire, in a nice cozy cabin, and enjoying the warmth in the middle of a cold, Minnesota winter.

What About Application?

You may be thinking, “What about application? You’ve been talking about reading and study and meditating; how about application? Shouldn’t we be finding things to do in the Bible everyday?” My advice would be not to have your external life be the conscious focus of your Bible time. I don’t think we need to feel like we have to come away from every day’s reading and studying and meditation with one clear, external “to do” for the day.

Rather, I would say that the way you engage in application in Bible meditation is by applying it to your heart. Try to apply it to your heart everyday. Don’t circumvent the heart and go straight from the head in reading and studying to external actions. Go from taking in the Bible to applying it to your heart in meditation. And then, let the good deeds flow. God will change our external lives in his perfect timing as his Word is applied to our hearts in meditation.

As you seek to cultivate your own “habits of grace,” I would encourage you to think outside the box when it comes to Bible intake. Receiving God’s word — hearing his voice in the Scriptures — isn’t just sitting at a desk and reading a Bible (though it can be that), or sitting at a desk with a pen or pencil doing a study. It could also be hearing God’s word read aloud. It could be biblically faithful preaching. It could also be biblically faithful books, articles, or other types of media. And most important of all, it is doing what it takes to pause and ponder, to stop and chew, to seek to apply God’s revealed truth to the your heart through meditation.

Think of ways to diversify the portfolio of God’s voice coming into your life, through reading and studying and meditating on the Bible itself, or through mediated biblical teaching and gospel truths through others.
