Here are 4 tips that should help you perfect your pronunciation of ‘sure’:

  • Break ‘sure’ down into sounds:
    [SHAW]

say it out loud and exaggerate the sounds until you can consistently produce them.
  • Record yourself saying ‘sure’ in full sentences, then watch yourself and listen. You’ll be able to mark your mistakes quite easily.
  • Look up tutorials on Youtube on how to pronounce ‘sure’.
  • Focus on one accent: mixing multiple accents can get really confusing especially for beginners, so pick one accent
(US or UK) and stick to it.

To further improve your English pronunciation, we suggest you do the following:

  • Work on word/sentence reduction: in some countries, reducing words and sentences can be seen as informal
but in the United States, it’s completely normal and part of everyday conversation (eg: what are you going to do this weekend →
what you gonna do this weekend). Check out gonna and wanna for more examples.
  • Work on your intonation: stress, rhythm and intonation patterns are not easy to master in English but they are crucial to make others understand
what you say. It’s what expresses the mood, attitude and emotion.

Hi,

I have noticed that in BBC English, the vowel in cure, lure, pure, sure and tour is [ʊə].
But in American English, the vowel in these words is [uɚ] or [ur].

So the beginning part of the vowel in BrE and AmE are different.
Do you think so?

Another point is that in American English, sure is the exception. Sure does not rhyme with lure or tour, but with shirt (without T).
Is this right?

Thanks a lot.

    Is this right?

Not when I say it. Shirt has a shorter vowel than the other words.

    I found a bad example.

How about this word: sir? Does sure rhyme with sir for you?

    • #4

Sure and sir rhyme for me. I do not know how widespread this pronunciation is, but I think it is just the natural consequence of ʊ becoming centralized before r. Some speakers have shifted tour, lure, and sure to [ɔɹ], but I don’t know how widespread it is since it is very uncommon in my region.

To you, do tour and lure have [ u ] or [ʊ] ?

Sure is pronounced many different ways by American speakers. You’ll never find a standard pronunciation.

    shur
    shoor
    shore (like the seashore)
    shuer

    are all possible.

    I have:
    Tour [ʊ]
    Tourist [ɚ] or [ʊ]
    Lure (verb) [ɚ]
    Lure (noun) /u/
    Pure [pjɚ]
    Cure [kjɚ]

I am sure you will find a lot of variation between different speakers with these words.

As is often the case for vowels, whether surveying AE or BE.

I pronounce them with a different vowel, but many people around here pronounce them the same.

I have no idea what you mean by these words. Let me guess.
shur: ur means the vowel in fur.
shoor: oo means the vowel in took.
    shuer: shoe + r

    I have:
    Tour [ʊ]
    Tourist [ɚ] or [ʊ]
    Lure (verb) [ɚ]
    Lure (noun)
    Pure [pjɚ]
    Cure [kjɚ]

There is no [ u ] in your realizations of this word. So [ u ] is not an option?

I am sure some people have [ u ] in sure, but in my experience I have not heard it. That is not to say that nobody pronounces it like that, but that I have not heard it in my experience. A pronunciation that is rare in one part of the world might be common in another part.

It seems we have covered most of the range of pronunciaiions of this word by native English speakers. It probably serves as a good illustration of the
«variety» often found and the futility of trying to nail down

    one

    form for AE and

    one

form for BE with any precision.

Some people even say it to rhyme with «show».

    I sure am = I sho am.
