Able → unable — неспособный
Believable → unbelievable — невероятный
Certain → uncertain — неуверенный
Comfortable → uncomfortable — некомфортный
Forgettable → unforgettable — незабываемый
Friendly → unfriendly — недружелюбный
Helpful → unhelpful — бесполезный
Interesting → uninteresting — неинтересный
Usual → unusual — необычный
Prepared → unprepared — неподготовленный
Ее часто можно встретить в прилагательных с суффиксами -ed and -able.
Приставка in- (Prefix in-)
Многие прилагательные добавляют к себе приставку in-.
Это вторая по популярности отрицательная приставка в английском:
Accurate → inaccurate — неточный
Eligible → ineligible — непригодный
Organic → inorganic — неорганический
Decent → indecent — неподобающий
Sane → insane — безумный
Formal → informal — неформальный
Adequate → inadequate — неадекватный
Complete → incomplete — незавершенный
Correct → incorrect — неправильный
В английском есть много слов, которые начинаются на in-, однако это не является отрицательной приставкой:
Incline — наклонять, склонять
Indulge — потворствовать, потакать, баловать
Insist — настаивать
Invoke — просить, умолять
Interesting — интересный
Примите во внимание, что в некоторых случаях приставка in- не делает слово противоположным по значению:
Inflammable = flammable — легко воспламеняющийся, огнеопасный, горючий (их антоним — это nonflammable)
Inhabitable = habitable — пригодный для жилья, заселения (антоним — uninhabitable)
Invaluable = valuable — ценный. Invaluable даже сильнее, чем valuable, потому что обозначает «бесценный».
Приставка in- имеет вариации im-, ir-, il-. Эти приставки «адаптируются» под слово, служат для лучшего звучания, и по первой букве основы можно определить, какая приставка нужна.
Эти приставки мы тоже обязательно разберем.
Разница между приставками in- и un- (Difference between prefixes in- and un-)
Я считаю очень важным обратить ваше внимание на разницу между приставками in- и un-.
Когда много лет назад я готовилась к экзамену FCE, где одно из заданий посвящено именно словообразованию, я столкнулась со сложностью: как же отличить, когда использовать un-, а когда in-?
Часто одно и то же слово можно найти в словарях с разными приставками, причем оба варианта правильны и между ними можно поставить знак равенства:
Например:
Inalienable = unalienable — неотъемлемый, неотчуждаемый
Inadvisable = unadvisable — нерекомендуемый
Un- обычно встречается с прилагательными с окончаниями -ed или -ing, которые образованы от причастий:
Undeveloped — неразвитый
Undisciplined — недисциплинированный
Для тех, кто, как и я, любит углубиться в этимологию корней слов, интересным будет тот факт, что к словам германского происхождения чаще добавляется un-, а к словам латинского происхождения — in-:
Unfriendly / inamicable (inimical) — недружелюбный
Unteachable / ineducable — необучаемый
Unbelievable / incredible —
Mobile → immobile — неподвижный
Moral → immoral — аморальный
Perfect → imperfect — неидеальный
Possible → impossible — невозможный
Mature → immature — незрелый
Balance → imbalance — неустойчивость
Так и хочется добавить в этот список important, но в этом слове im- не является отрицательной приставкой, слово без нее не используется вообще.
Обратите внимание, что не к каждому слову, которое начинается на m или p, можно добавить приставку im-:
Unpack — распаковать
Unpaid — неоплаченный
Unmarked — непримечательный
Unmask — разоблачать
Приставка ir- (Prefix ir-)
Слова, которые сочетаются с приставкой ir-, начинаются на букву r:
Rational → irrational — нерациональный
Regular → irregular — неправильный
Resistible → irresistible — непреодолимый
Responsible → irresponsible — безответственный
Приставка il- (Prefix il-)
Слова, которые принимают приставку il- обычно начинаются с буквы l:
Legal → illegal — незаконный
Legible → illegible — неразборчивый
Literate → illiterate — безграмотный
Logical → illogical — нелогичный
Legitimate → illegitimate — противозаконный
Исключение:
Loyal → disloyal — нелояльный, неблагожелательный
Приставка a- (Prefix a-)
Этa приставка обозначает отсутствие какого-то признака («без» чего-либо) и добавляется к прилагательным, которые оканчиваются на -al:
Moral → amoral — аморальный
Political → apolitical — аполитичный
Social → asocial — асоциальный
Приставка de- (Prefix de-)
Эта приставка добавляется к глаголам и обозначает обратное действие
Activate → deactivate — деактивировать
Code → decode — раскодировать
Construct → deconstruct — деконструировать, разобрать
Form → deform — деформировать, исковеркать
Frost → defrost — размораживать
Value → devalue — обесценивать
Приставка dis- (Prefix dis-)
Приставка dis- близка по значению к приставкам de- и un-.
Affected → disaffected — недовольный
Agree → disagree — противоречить, не соглашаться
Agreement → disagreement — разногласие
Honorable → dishonorable — бесчестный, подлый
Loyal → disloyal — предательский, нелояльный
Tasteful → distasteful — неприятный, противный
Приставка mis- (Prefix mis-)
Приставка mis- ассоциируется прежде всего с чем-то ошибочным, неправильным, неверным. Но иногда она может обозначать и простое отрицание.
Рассмотрим примеры:
Conduct → misconduct — плохо себя вести
Diagnose → misdiagnose — поставить неправильный диагноз
Inform → misinform — дезинформировать
Lead → mislead — сбивать, вести не туда
Place → misplace — положить не на то место
Take → mistake — ошибка
Trust → mistrust — недоверие
Understanding → misunderstanding — неверное понимание
Кстати, недавно в блоге я рассказывала о том, как описывать ошибки на английском, о разнице между словами mistake, error, fault, inaccuracy, slip, blunder и другие. Советую почитать, если вы пропустили этот урок.
Приставка non- (Prefix non-)
Эта приставка самая дружелюбная, так как она может присоединяться практически к любому существительному, прилагательному, глаголу, и её сложно перепутать с другими приставками.
Приставка non обычно делает слово полностью противоположным по значению к исходному слову:
Conformist → nonconformist — нонконформист
Essential → nonessential — несущественный
Fiction → nonfiction — документальная литература
Sense → nonsense — ерунда
Existent → nonexistent — несуществующий
Resident → nonresident — нерезидент
Smoker → nonsmoker — некурящий
Stop → nonstop — без остановки
Еще одна особенность non- — для ее добавления иногда нужен дефис, однако в разных словарях можно встретить слова с non-, написанные слитно. Spelling-checkers (программы, которые выполняют проверку текста) могут отмечать ошибку в использовании дефиса. В этом случае рекомендую пользоваться надежными и проверенными словарями онлайн и находить варианты написания нужного вам слова.
Приставка anti- (Prefix anti-)
Приставка anti- обозначает «против»:
Racist → antiracist — антирасист
War → antiwar — антивоенный
Depressant → antidepressant — антидепрессант
Perspirant → antiperspirant — антиперспирант
Government → anti-government — антиправительственная
Что касается написания этой приставки: с дефисом или без, то большинство слов могут писаться как с дефисом, так и без него. Основное правило — старайтесь избегать дефиса, если это возможно и проверяйте написание слова по словарю.
Исключения
В основном, отрицательные приставки выполняют ту же функцию, что и слово not. Поэтому закрепляется стереотип, что слово с отрицательной приставкой по значению тождественно прилагательному с not. Во многих случаях это действительно так. Например:
Nonessential = not essential — несущественный
Unfriendly = not friendly — недружественный
Disagree = not agree —

2 Common English Expressions with NONE
Jack of All Trades – Master of None
This English expression is used to describe a person who has dabbled in many skills, rather than gaining expertise by focusing on one.
Source: Wikipedia Jack of All Trades
- My friend Peter can do many things, but not he’s really great at any of them. Jack of all trades master of none.
Do you know what the verb dabble means?
dabble – verb – to take part in a sport, an activity, etc. but not very seriously
“She is a talented musician but happy to just dabble.”
*NOTE – If we shorten this expression it can have a positive meaning.
- “My Dad built a bed for my nephew and he can fix his own car. He is a Jack of all trades.”
If we don’t add “master of none” to the end we are making a positive statement about someone’s ability to do many different things.
None of your business
None of your business means it’s not your concern, or it has nothing to do with you so you shouldn’t worry about it. This is a common expression used when someone asks questions that are too personal.

B: None of your business. That was a private conversation.”
- “My relationship with her is none of your business.”

None OF (something)
Remember that none is a pronoun so we don’t use it with a noun. However, we can say none of something.
Please look at the following examples:
“My brother has many sweaters. There are 6 sweaters in our closet and none of them are mine.”
After none of we can use plural countable nouns [none of the stores], a pronoun, [none of them] or uncountable nouns [none of my furniture].
Plural means more than one – none of the cars, sweaters, people, none of them, those etc.
Do you want to know more about using singular and plural nouns? You will find lots of helpful examples here: Singular and Plural nouns – 50 examples (worksheet PDF)
- “I want to go to the mall on Christmas, but none of the
- stores are open.” -The word stores is plural.
“I invited 4 friends from my soccer team to my party but none of them are coming. They’re playing in a school tournament on Saturday.” – Them = 4 friends (more than one)
We can also use uncountable nouns with none of.
- “We just received feedback from our customer survey. Unfortunately, none of it is good.”
Feedback is also an uncountable noun. Feedback has no plural form.
- “There was a big earthquake in March, luckily none of my furniture was damaged.”
*Furniture is an uncountable noun. Furniture has no plural form.
Advanced grammar – None of is or are?
Here is a grammar puzzle I had to research. Should we say None of my friends is coming or are coming? The answer surprised me!
None of is or are? Quick answer – both versions are used. The definition of NONE has a plural and a singular form. None can mean not one (singular) and none can mean not any (plural).
Look at this grammar:
- Not one of my friends is coming. – None of my friends is coming.
- Not any of my friends are coming. – None of my friends are coming.
In this example, I prefer to use the pronoun NONE as a plural –
None of my friends are coming.
When I type ~ None of my friends is coming ~ into my computer, my grammar software wants to correct it.
I’m not saying this is correct! Some people feel that NONE is a contraction of NOT ONE so it should always be treated as singular. For me “None of my friends are coming.” is natural but both uses are okay.
Remember when none of is used with an uncountable noun we have to use singular grammar.
None of my furniture was broken. *Not were broken.
None of the feedback is good. *Not are good.

Non or None
NONE is a pronoun that means: not one of a group of people or things; not any
“NONE of my friends were there.”
NON is a prefix that means: not – The prefix NON is used with nouns, adjectives, and adverbs.
“All of my friends are NONsmokers.”
The prefix non~ can show a “lack of‟ a quality: for example, a non-smoker is someone who does not smoke.

The prefix NON~ advanced grammar
The quality of non- of denoting contradictory opposition is essential when unambiguous distinction is required.
- from academia.edu article “Observations on the pejorative aspect of the English negative prefix non“
This quote above simply means that: We use the prefix non~ to describe an opposite when the meaning must be clear and easy to understand. Compare:
Nonliving VS. Dead
The word nonliving is the direct opposite of living, the word dead can also mean nonliving, but the adjective dead can only be used to describe something that was once alive.
- Glass is a nonliving material.
We can say that glass is a nonliving material but we wouldn’t say it is dead because it was never alive. Nonliving is a better choice in this sentence because the meaning is clear.
How to use Nobody/no-one – Nothing – Nowhere
These words [Nobody/no-one – nothing – nowhere] can be used at the beginning of a sentence or you can use them by themselves as answers to questions. (Just like none.)
Please read the following examples:
- “I knocked on the door but no-one answered. Maybe nobody was home.”
Not one person was at home.
- “I opened the store early today but nobody came until after 10:00.”
Not one person came to the store before 10:00.
- A: “What did you do yesterday?”
B: “Nothing. I was too tired.”
I didn’t do anything.
- “Nothing is happening this weekend. Everyone is staying home because of the quarantine.”
Not a single thing is happening due to the quarantine.
- A: “Where will you go during the summer holiday?”
B: “Nowhere. I will stay home and save money.”
I will not go anywhere.
- “This road goes nowhere.”
This road doesn’t go anywhere.
Be careful of this common mistake!
We don’t use nobody/nothing/nowhere with a negative verb – isn’t/didn’t/can’t etc.
Look at these examples:“
- I saw nothing.” NOT
I didn’t see nothing.
- “I may change jobs this summer but I need to keep it a secret. No-one can know.”
NOTNo-one can’t know.
These incorrect examples are called double negatives. Sometimes double negatives can be used in casual conversation, but not always. Learn more about Double Negatives here. LINK

- “It was a nice day and suddenly dark clouds and rain came out of nowhere.”

В английском языке существует несколько способов словообразования и один из них — добавление приставок к той или иной части речи. Если в русском языке мы легко можем образовать отрицание всего лишь одной приставкой -не, то в английском языке дела обстоят немного сложнее. Сегодня мы разберемся в отрицательных приставках, а также правилах их употребления.
English language is a language of variety, and it works like a machine where you can put parts together to build a specific shape or structure. In English language, we can find a variety of rooted words that can have different synonyms or antonyms, and to vary the way we write or speak, we can also use some techniques such as affixation.
An affix is a morpheme that can be divided no further, it’s a small part of language that can be added to a rooted word to modify the meaning and to convey it into different parts of speech; such as adjectives, adverbs, nouns, and verbs. For example,
Expect (root in verb form) — Ожидать (основное слово)
Expected (adjective) — Ожидаемый (прилагательное)
Unexpected (antonym adjective) — Неожиданный (прилагательное-антоним)
Unexpectedly (antonym adverb) — Неожиданно (наречие-антоним)
Expectation (noun) — Ожидание (существительное)
The affix that we add to the beginning of a rooted word is called prefix and the affix that we add to the end of the word is called suffix. In this article, we will be delving into how we can make negative forms and antonyms using the commonly known and most used negative prefixes.
NON-
Non- is a prefix that shows the meaning of “absent” and it can be used with nouns or adjectives. For example:
Smoker — non-smoker
Sense — nonsense
Alcoholic — non-alcoholic
He used to be an alcoholic, but now he consumes only non-alcoholic beverages.
Раньше он был алкоголиком, но теперь он употребляет только безалкогольные напитки.
DIS-
Dis- is a prefix that comes with the usage of making antonyms, and it is very common among native speakers and writers. For instance,
Regard — disregard
Charge — discharge
Connect — disconnect
Comfort — discomfort
Loyal — disloyal
We sensed that he was disloyal and would eventually turn on us.
Мы чувствовали, что он ненадёжен, и в конечном итоге нас выдаст.
IM-
Im- comes after rooted words that start with “m” or “p”, and it is usually used to show negation or antonyms.
Possible — Impossible
Mortal — immortal
The noise made sleep impossible.
Из-за шума было невозможно спать.
IN-
In- so similar to im- and is used for the same purposes, an example for that:
My friend had been active on social media for years, but now he’s inactive.
Мой друг был активен в социальных сетях в течение многих лет, но сейчас он неактивен.
Other examples include:
Appropriate — inappropriate
Secure — insecure
These are just example to show you briefly, but be sure that you’ll find so many words that are used with the prefix in-.
UN-
For this negative prefix, it might be the most commonly used among above examples, and it is used to demonstrate antonyms of rooted words of course. These are words like:
Finished — unfinished
Done — undone
Stoppable — unstoppable
What is done cannot be undone.
Сделанного не воротишь.
To summarize, the rules here very simple and they can be used very easily for those who would like to beautify their language by making it richer in vocabulary, the examples above are for demonstration; and of course, there are plenty of other negative prefixes that you might find very useful in the next steps of developing your language skills as an ESL (English as a Second Language) learner. The most important point is that English is a living language that runs dynamically and smoothly.
- Words beginning with certain letters
- Words with the prefix «non-«
This morpheme tends to mean «completely not«. Some of the most representative words that include it are: nonsense, nonrefundable, nonprofit

Today we will focus on the prefix non-, which does “not” “not” mean “not.” Let’s check out a good number of English vocabulary words that have non- in them so as to make its meaning henceforth nonperishable in your memory!
Terms that describe food often use the prefix non-, “not.” For instance, let’s say that the label on a container of yogurt claims that it is nonfat; you would expect that yogurt “not” to have fat in its list of ingredients. If a food item is nonperishable, such as canned food, it will “not” go off or spoil in a short period of time, but rather remain edible over an extended period since that type of food has a long shelf life. You also want to be very sure that you always eat nonpoisonous food, or that food which does “not” have poison in it! You can then cook all that nonfat, nonperishable, and nonpoisonous food in a nonstick teflon frying pan so that it will “not” stick to it when it’s cooking!
Most people these days agree that it is nonsensical to smoke, or does “not” make good sense. That is why more and more people are becoming nonsmokers, people who do “not” smoke. Perhaps one day smoking will be completely nonexistent, “not” being anywhere.
Imagine if you had an interest in nonflying birds, or birds whose wings are “not” used for flying, such as the following flightless birds: penguins, dodos, moas, ostriches, and emus. To discover which of these birds are extinct and which are still around, you could read a nonfiction book about flightless birds, or a book that does “not” deal with fiction but with facts about them.
Two fairly common Latin phrases in widespread use today contain the Latin word non which means “not.” A non sequitur, for instance, is a statement that does “not” follow logically from known information. A sine qua non part of an organization is an essential part of it, something without which it will “not” function.
A surprise word from baseball that came from the Latin word non is the word “umpire.” Etymologically, an “umpire” is a neutral official in a game, “not” equal or on a par with either side, but rather completely unbiased.
Now that you know that the prefix non- does “not” not mean “not,” you will “not” be fooled by any words that have non- in them, and so will “not” make the mistake of buying a nonreturnable item that you’re “not” sure you want in the first place!
