About Prefix and Suffix Words

This page lists all the words created by adding prefixes, suffixes to the word `again`. For each word, youwill notice a blue bar below the word. The longer the blue bar below a word, the more common/popular the word. Very short blue bars indicate rare usage.

While some of the words are direct derivations of the word `again`, some are not.

You can click on each word to see it’s meaning.

Today we will focus on the prefix re-, which can mean “back” or “again.” Prefixes are morphemes which begin words, attaching to a word’s main part, the “root” or “stem.” For instance, in the word return, re- is the prefix, and “turn” is the root or stem.

One meaning of the prefix re- is “back.” For instance, when you reject a plan, you throw it “back.” When a man’s hair recedes, his hairline continues to move “back” as he loses hair. When you reduce the amount of money you spend, you lead it “back” to a smaller amount. When light reflects off a surface, it bends “back.” When you are returning home from an outing, you are turning “back” home. And when a criminal reverts to being good again, he turns “back” to morally upright behavior.

Another primary meaning of the prefix re- is “again.” For instance, when you rearrange the furniture in a room, you arrange it “again” into a different configuration. A marathon runner can become rejuvenated or etymologically made young “again” by sleeping and eating after a long race. Some newts regenerate limbs once they’ve lost them; that is, they grow them “again.” When a teacher recapitulates something she’s just taught, she goes over it “again” by summarizing it. Some religious faiths believe in reincarnation, or the taking of a body “again” after death to live another life.

In a few rare instances the prefix re- adds a “d” to make a word easier to say; this occurs before some vowels some of the time. The word redeem, for instance, as in to redeem a coupon, adds a “d” because reeem would have an unpronounceable 3 es. In the same vein, redundant is much better than “reundant.”

Now your brain will never reject that the meaning of the prefix re- is “back” or “again.” Reflect upon re-, and your vocabulary prowess will never regress!

  1. reject: throw ‘back’
  2. recede: move ‘back’
  3. reduce: lead ‘back’
  4. reflect: bend ‘back’
  5. return: turn ‘back’
  6. revert: turn ‘back’
  7. rearrange: arrange ‘again’
  8. rejuvenate: make young ‘again’
  9. recapitulate: say ‘again’, going ‘back’ to the head of what you’re saying
  10. reincarnate: return into a body ‘again’
  11. redeem: buy ‘back’
  12. redundant: flow ‘again’ unnecessarily

Can the Prefix RE be used with any verb?

The prefix RE- can be used with many verbs in English, but not all of them. The use of re- with a verb usually indicates that an action is being repeated or done again, or that something is being returned to a previous state. For example, “rewrite,” “rebuild,” “reconnect,” and “rethink” are all examples of verbs that use the prefix RE- to indicate repetition or restoration of something.

However, not all verbs can be used with the prefix RE-, as it may not make sense to repeat or restore certain actions. For example: If we drive somewhere again we don’t redrive there. This word doesn’t make sense.

Is the Prefix RE always used to indicate repetition?

Remember, this post is a true list of words that add RE to another word. All the words in this post are proper root words whose meaning becomes – root word again after adding the prefix RE.

There are some examples of words that begin with RE that don’t mean do again, but these are not “true” root words the way I am using them.

For example, re- is used in the words like rejoice (to feel great joy) or reverberate (to echo loudly). We can find the word joy inside rejoice to give us a clue to its meaning, but JOICE is not a word used by itself.

Verberate is actually a real verb from the past that means – to lash, beat, or whip. This verb is obsolete and not used anymore.

The meaning of reverberate is closer in meaning to the noun reverb (short for reverberation) which is when a sound occurs in a space that sends sound waves outwards in all directions. This meaning is much more closely related to the meaning of reverberate.

Can “re-” be used with adjectives and nouns as well as verbs?

Yes! This blog post contains a collection of words from each of these word categories.

Adjective Reusable – that can be used again

I always bring reusable chopsticks to Japanese style fast-food restaurants.

Noun Reunion – a social occasion or party attended by a group of people who have not seen each other for a long time

Verb Recreate – to make something that existed in the past exist or seem to exist again

The Prefix RE – Conclusion

The prefix RE means again or back. It is used a lot with verbs to mean “DO THAT VERB AGAIN.” I hope that the definitions and examples have helped you understand this prefix and given you the tools to use it in your own English conversations.

However, there are times when it’s necessary to use a hyphen to avoid confusion. Take a look at this example:

  • I resent my parents for being so strict.
  • I re-sent the message.

If you didn’t use the hyphen in the word “re-sent”, it would be spelt “resent”, which is a totally different word, meaning “feel angry or bitter about something”.

 Another example:

  • The director had to resign after the scandal.
  • I can’t find my copy. Could you re-sign this contract for me, please?

Resign means “announcing that you are leaving your job”. If you mean “sign again”, you need to hyphenate the word so that it doesn’t get confused with “resign”.

On a recent programme, we explained that knowing merely a few root words in English can assist you understand the meaning of hundreds more words.

To refresh your memory, a root discussion is the simplest class of a discussion. For instance, two forms of the root for the word «meet» are vis- and vid- such as in the words «television» and «video.»

Today, we will tell you about prefixes and suffixes – groups of letters that appear at the beginnings and endings of words.

Learning the meanings of common prefixes and suffixes tin can aid you understand unknown English words you lot come across. It can besides help you become better at spelling words.

Prefixes

Let’due south start with prefixes.

A prefix is a alphabetic character or a group of letters that we add to the beginning of a discussion. Prefixes change the meanings of words. For case, the prefix un- (or u-n) tin mean «not,» «remove,» or «opposite.» Calculation united nations- to the word «happy» gives you lot the discussion «unhappy,» which ways not happy.

U-n and r-due east (or re) are the two nearly common prefixes in the English language. Re- means «over again» or «back,» such equally in the words «rethink» «redo» and «repay.»

Hither are a few things to remember when learning prefixes:

  1. Different prefixes in English language can have like meanings, such every bit un-, in- and non- all of which hateful «not» or «opposite of.» Also, the prefixes mis- and ir- mean «wrong,» «wrongly,» or «incorrectly.»
  2. Notice that double letters are possible. For instance, when you add the prefix im- to words that begin with the letter «grand,» you get two «m»due south as in «immeasurable.» That’due south as well true when you add un- to words that begin with the alphabetic character «due north,» equally in «unnoticeable.» The same is true for many other prefixes.
  3. When adding a prefix to a word, the spelling of the base word never changes. For case, the prefix un- did not change the spelling of the give-and-take «happy.» And, the prefix re- would not change the spelling of the word «live» in «relive.»
  4. Watch out for «lookalikes» – words that look similar they contain prefixes just, in fact, practise not. For example, the un- in the give-and-take «uncle» is not a prefix, nor is the re- in the words «reach» or «real.»

Suffixes

Now, let’s turn to suffixes.

A suffix is a letter of the alphabet or grouping of letters added to the cease of a give-and-take. Suffixes are commonly used to show the lexical category of a word. For example, adding «ion» to the verb «human action» gives u.s.a. «action,» the noun class of the word. Suffixes also tell us the verb tense of words or whether the words are plural or singular.

Some common suffixes are -er, -s, -es,ed, -ing and —ly.

Here are a few things to remember when learning suffixes:

  1. Some suffixes have more than 1 meaning. For example, the suffix -er may suggest a person who performs an action, like a teacher. Merely «er» is also commonly added to the ends of adjectives and adverbs. They compare two things and testify that one is «more» than the other, such as in «faster» and «stronger.»
  2. The spelling of a base of operations give-and-take can change when a suffix is added. This is truthful of nigh base words catastrophe in the letter «y.» For example, when nosotros add together the suffix -ness to the word «crazy» to make «craziness,» we supercede the «y» with an «i.» This dominion is as well true of many base words catastrophe in a silent «e» when the suffix begins with a vowel. For example, in the words «write,» «make» and «manage,» we drop the «east» in the words when we add -ing to brand: «writing,» «making» and «managing.» We also ofttimes drib the silent «e» before the suffix -able such as in «usable.» Be careful, though, considering with some words, nosotros go on the «eastward,» such as in «child-bearing» and «loveable.»

At that place are boosted suffix rules, but they deal with spelling and can be learned with fourth dimension and practice.

A affair to go along in mind almost both prefixes and suffixes is that some are only used with some words. For instance, we add the suffix -ful to some nouns to mean «full of,» such every bit in the words «beautiful» or «helpful.» Just, nosotros cannot add -ful to just whatever noun. You could not, for example, say «loveful» to mean full of beloved.

So, what are some ways that you tin practise common prefixes and suffixes?

Ane way is to utilise online flashcards from websites like Quizlet. You lot can choose sets of cards that are already made or create and use your own sets. Or, yous tin brand your own flashcards with pieces of paper.

Once you’ve spent time practicing, take a news story or folio in a volume and look for words that take the prefixes and suffixes you learned. Then, employ what you know nearly the meaning of the root words to guess the meanings of those words.

Learning prefixes and suffixes will non merely build your vocabulary only can make unfamiliar English words a lot less frightening.
