Hello, please what does the expression «to play house» mean?
I think that it’s not quite a good thing but it’s the title of a famous country song and i’m so curios about the correct meaning!
thanks

Children «play house» when they pretend to be adults, and enact the daily rituals they see their parents perform. (In this day of video entertainment, I’m not sure how prevalent «playing house» is, but it was common when I was a child!)

However, in the context of the country song (which I’m not familiar with) it might refer to a couple who live together and «pretend» to have a marriage-like relationship, but who don’t really take it seriously. Just a guess! :)

I concur with Elizabeth. To «play house» is an innocent thing. Whereas to «play doctor» might be a suggestive activity and perhaps not so innocent.

«Giocare al dottore» probably. I presume that was the one you were interested in?!!!

P.S. Giocare al dottore e all’infermiera might be the complete name of the game.

Thanks to you all. «to play house» as a children’s innocent game could be traslated in Italian also with «giocare a mamma e papà» or «giocare alla famiglia».
But in the song of Tammy Wynette it seems not to be such a good thing because she says «when my mummy played house my daddy said goodbye..».
Perhaps I’m catty … but why should had he gone away if it’s only an innocent thing ?

I suppose it means that the man in the song didn’t like family ties nor being a husband and a daddy, so he ran away as things got demanding!

Forse dipende dalle zone d’Italia non so.

«Giocare a negozio»? «Giocare al negozio»? «Giocare a fare negozio»? «Giocare a fare negoziante e cliente»?
