Today, we’re going to look at the difference between fun and funny. Many non-native English speakers have trouble with these two words, the most common mistake being that people use ‘funny’ when they should be using ‘fun’. While both words sound positive, they have completely different meanings and, when used in the right way, will stop any confusion and help you to sound like a more natural English speaker.

So, what’s the difference?

‘Fun’ is an uncountable noun that can be anything that you find enjoyable or pleasurable. Let’s look at some example sentences:

We had so much fun together at the beach yesterday. We went swimming and then we had a picnic and some ice cream.
I hope you have fun this weekend. You haven’t had a day off work for ages!
It was really good fun at the leisure park. We went on huge roller coasters and water slides, and I even won a giant teddy bear!

‘Fun’ is also an adjective. In informal English, it can be used to describe something that you really enjoy or enjoyed doing and it can describe people who love to have fun too!

My job is great fun. I work with my friends and we’re always laughing and joking together.
I love my little brother. We have such a fun time together. He’s a really fun guy to be around.
Learning a language doesn’t have to be boring. We can make it fun by using games and music.

‘Funny’ is an adjective and you can use it to describe any thing, person, or situation that makes you laugh.

My teacher is so funny; she’s always telling jokes in class.
The movie I watched last night was really funny. I couldn’t stop laughing!
Can you recommend any funny YouTube videos to me? I’ve been feeling a bit depressed and I could do with a laugh.

Remember: fun = enjoyment and funny = laughing

There are some negative uses of ‘funny’ that depend on the situation or context. Here, we can add the word ‘feeling’ before funny. If you feel funny or a something feels funny, it means that something isn’t quite right – you may be feeling sick or uncomfortable with a certain situation.

I feel funny so I think I’m going to go to bed and lie down.
I don’t think I’ll buy that car; something feels funny about it.
Sonia isn’t coming to the party tonight. She said she feels funny about her ex-boyfriend being there.

With this usage, you don’t need to put ‘feel’ before funny every time. Without the word ‘feel’, funny means ‘strange’, ‘surprising’, ‘awkward’, ‘unexpected’, or ‘difficult to understand or explain’.

Hey Mum! My sandwich tastes really funny. I think there’s something wrong with the cheese!
I thought it was funny that my boss didn’t tell anyone he was quitting his job.
