Дааа, мальчик из этого анекдота точно не знаком c фразовыми глаголами с предлогом down.
Что ж, пусть эта шутка про дауна и будет ассоциацией (хоть и не самой позитивной) для этих фразовых глаголов.
Что они означают — да главным образом, движение вниз. Точно также, как фразовые глаголы с предлогом «up», по сути, означают движение вверх. Элементарно, Ватсон!
В значении физическое движение вниз
1) Sit down — сесть
He sat down on the bed. – Он сел на кровать.
2) Lie down — лечь
He lay down on the sofa and fell asleep. – Он лег на диван и уснул.
3) Get down — пригнуться (to — приступить)
Get down! – Ложись!
4) Kneel down — становиться на колени
He knelt down on the ground to examine the tracks. – Он встал на колени, чтобы исследовать следы.
5) Come down — рушить, падать, про болезнь
I think I’m coming down with flu. – Я, кажется, заболеваю.
6) Settle down — осесть
It’s time to settle down. – Время осесть.
7) Stand down — уйти с должности
He stood down to make way for someone younger. – Он ушел с должности, чтобы дать дорогу кому-нибудь помладше.
Trickle down — просачиваться и стекать вниз

Break down
Meaning: if a machine stops working, we say that it breaks down.
- My car broke down in the middle of the road and I had to push it to the garage.
It also means to start to cry.
- When she read the letter Lorna broke down and cried for hours.
Burn down
Meaning: to destroy something with fire.
- Their house was burned down during the war.
- After being hit by thunder, the tree burned down.

Come down
Meaning: to move towards the ground.
- The monkey came down from the tree when it felt safe.
- Rain was coming down heavily all night.
It also means to become lower in value.
- I’ll buy that jacket when its price comes down.
Come down with
Meaning: to begin being ill.
- James came down with the flu.
- Our children came down with measles so they are staying in quarantine.
Cut down
To cut something down means to cut it at its base.
- The woodcutter marked the tree he was going to cut down.
It also means to reduce something in amount.
- They cut down the prices of fruit in this supermarket.
- I’m trying to cut down on sugar in my diet.
Die down
Meaning: to become less strong or loud.
- The applause in the theatre was dying down as the curtain closed.
- Mark thought it was better to be quiet until the scandal died down.

Get down
To get someone down means to make them feel sad.
- This music is so sad; it gets me down.
- The situation in the country during the war started to get him down.
To get something down means to write something down.
- Did you get his phone number down?
- We need to get down the information about the flat we want to buy.
Go down
Meaning: to move to a lower level, to go south.
- They took the lift to go down.
- The Titanic went down on April 14, 1912.
- We are going down to the Mediterranean.
Also: to swallow.
- He had a glass of wine to make the food go down easier.
Keep down
Meaning: to control the number or size of something and not let it increase.
- Laura is trying to keep her spending down.
- Will you please keep your voices down, I am trying to study here.
To keep someone down means to control them
- The police managed to keep down the protesters.
Put down
To put something down means to stop holding or carrying something and put it on some kind of surface.
- Brian put his bag down on a baggage carousel and walked to the plane.
- Sara put her phone down on the table.
To put someone down means to make them feel stupid, especially in front of other people.
- You shouldn’t have put me down like that in front of everybody.

Run down
Meaning: to criticise.
- My boss ran me down today for not meeting the deadline.
It also means to injure someone with a vehicle.
- Our dog was run down by a lorry.
If a machine runs down, it means that it will stop working because it has no energy.
- The battery in my phone is running down; I’ll have to charge it.
Shut down
Meaning: a shop doing business.
- Our favourite cafe shut down last week.
- The bank was shut down due to a lack of capital.

Phrasal Verbs consist of a verb plus a particle:
verb + adverb or verb + preposition or verb + adverb + preposition.
The meaning of this combination is mostly very different from the verb and the adverb or preposition alone.
There are no rules that might explain how phrasal verbs are formed correctly — all you can do is look them up in a dictionary and study their meanings.
In fact many phrasal verbs are metaphorical, and if you understand the metaphors they use, it will be easier to understand and remember their meanings.
Phrasal verbs are mainly used in spoken English and informal texts.
Many phrasal verbs are transitive, meaning that they take an object. Other phrasal verbs can stand alone (intransitive verbs).
Some phrasal verbs are separable (the verb and the preposition can be separated, putting the object in the middle), while others are inseparable (the object must come at the end because the verb and the preposition must stay together).
Separable verb:
Correct: Put on your coat.
Correct: Put your coat on.
Inseparable verb:
Correct: Get on a bus.
Incorrect: Get a bus on.
Phrasal verbs with DOWN, their meanings and examples
DOWN is a preposition opposite of UP.
The first and the most obvious usage of the preposition DOWN is MOVEMENT DOWN or ALONG:
It is used in situations such as:
Moving in or towards a low or lower position, from a higher one
Moving from above and onto a surface
Moving in place or into position
Can be used as an alternative to the «TO» in «go to», «went to». I went down the pub with my mates.
Bend down — Lower the top half of your body. She bent down to pick up the suitcase.
Blow down — When the wind forces something to fall. The tornado blew down many buildings.
Chop down — Fell or cut down a tree. Don’t chop down this tree!
Come down — Come to a lower point from a higher one/travel. When you’re next in London, come down and see us.
Fall down — Fall on the ground/Have a weak point. I slipped on the ice and fell down.
Go down — Go to a lower point from a higher one. Is this lift going down?
Get down — Lower your head and body. Incoming fire! Get down!
Kneel down — Put one or both knees on the ground. She knelt in front of the fire to warm herself.
Knock down — Demolish/Hit and injure someone. Sue was knocked do wn just yards from her home.
Lie down – Place the body in a flat, horizontal position/recline. Why don’t you lie down on the sofa for a while?
Move down — Cause someone or something to move farther down or along. Move down all these chairs. We need more space.
Peg down — Fasten something to the ground. After he had finished pegging the tent down, he built a fire.
Pop down (to) — Travel somewhere to visit. I’ll try to pop down tomorrow evening after dinner.
Put down — Stop holding/Put someone or something onto a surface/Kill an animal because it is old or ill. This box is really heavy — can we put it down on the floor for a minute?
Sit down — Help someone to sit/Be seated/sit on something/take a seat. Please sit down and make yourself comfortable.
Stand down — Withdraw or resign/End a state of readiness or alert/ Leave a witness stand. The judge allowed the witness to stand down.
Step down — Come down from something /Leave a job or position so that someone can take over. Please step down from the platform.
Run down — Hit a pedestrian with a vehicle. She got run down outside school.
Tear down – Demolish. They plan to tear the old building down and build a new one there.
REDUCE (in or towards a lower level, a smaller amount, or a simpler state)
Bargain down/Beat down — Persuade someone to drop the price of something they’re selling. If the price is too expensive, try to bargain it down.
Boil down — Simplify, reduce to the essentials. The manager just wanted to know what the report boiled down to meaning for the company.
Bring down — Make something cheaper/Reduce the rate, level, or amount of something. Our principal responsibility is to bring down the level of unemployment.
Calm down — Stop being angry or emotionally excited. Please try to calm yourself down!
Cool down — Get cooler/Become calm. Just try to cool down and think rationally.
Cut down — Consume less/Reduce a vertical thing to ground level by cutting. The doctor told him to cut down on his drinking.
Die down — Become much less noisy, powerful, or active. The wind died down during the night.
Draw down — Reduce levels/Get funding. Some firms have dealt with the problem by drawing down their cash reserves.
Dumb down — Make something simpler and easier to understand in a way that reduces its quality. The researchers dumbed down the report before releasing it to the public.
Go down — Decrease, get smaller/Sink/Be received by people, in terms of their reaction/Happen, take place. No one expects house prices to go down in the near future.
Grind down — Reduce or destroy someone’s enthusiasm. Ground down by years of abuse, she did not have the confidence to leave him.
Mark down — Give a student a lower grade for a particular reason/Reduce the price of something. They’ve marked down the shoes to £20 for this week only.
Narrow down — Remove less important options to make it easier to choose. We can narrow the choice down to black or white.
Play down — Try to make something seem less important. The Military spokesman tried to play down the seriousness of the disaster.
Scale down — Make something smaller than originally planned. Reduced funding forced us to scale the project down.
Slow down — Reduce speed/Become less active. The doctor has told him to slow down or he’ll have a heart attack.
Run down — Lose energy or power. The decision was taken to let the steel industry run down.
Simmer down — Become calmer; make less noise/Become less excited, noisy or angry. When tempers simmer down, we should be able to get an agreement.
Turn down — Reduce volume, temperature. Can you turn the music down a bit?
Water down — Make something weaker and less effective. The new laws watered down the power of the president.
Wear down — Make something weaker. They were worn down by the stress of feeding five children.
DEPRESS/UPSET/ILL (unhappy; unable to feel excited or energetic about anything)
Be down — Be depressed/Be reduced or less. He’s been down since his partner left him.
Be down on — Have negative feelings toward someone. It’s not fair of the boss to be so down on a new employee.
Be down with — Be ill. Kate is down with some bug and is off work today.
Break down — Stop working/End negotiations unsuccessfully/Start crying. When we gave her the bad news, she broke down and cried.
Come down with — Fall ill. I think I’m coming down with flu.
Get down — Make someone depressed, unhappy, exhausted. Doing the same thing every day can get you down.
Go down with — Fall ill/Find acceptance. She went down with a high fever.
Let down — Disappoint, fail to keep an arrangement/Make clothes longer. I was a bit late but I couldn’t let them down completely.
Look down on — Have a low opinion of. A lot of people look down on homeless people.
Pull down — Demolish/Make someone depressed. This fight with his parents is really pulling him down.
COMPLETE/RESTRICT/REJECT
Back down — Retract or withdraw your position or proposal in an argument. We will not back down on the decision to strike.
Burn down — Burn completely. The entire house burnt down in 20 minutes.
Clamp down on -Take strong action to stop or limit a harmful or unwanted activity. The government is clamping down on teenage drinking.
Close down — Close a shop, branch or business permanently. The health department closed the restaurant down.
Go down — Stop working, especially computers. The battery should prevent the computer system from going down in the event of a power cut.
Hold down — Stop someone or something from moving. Four people held him down.
Nail down — Succeed in getting, achieve/Understand fully/Secure something down by nailing it. I’ll nail down these floorboards.
Pin down — Get a fixed idea, opinion, etc, from someone/Discover exact details about something. She pinned down the cause of the accident.
Pipe down — Stop talking or making unnecessary noise. Will you please pipe down, you two? I’m trying to read!
Power down — Cut the electricity supply to a computer or electronic device. The crew powered down the right-hand engine of the aircraft.
Rub down – Sand, dry or clean something with a cloth. Rub the wood down with fine sandpaper till it is smooth.
Settle down — Start living a fixed and routine life. Are you ever going to settle down and get married?
Shut down — Close a business, shop, etc./Turn a computer off. The company plans to shut down four factories and cut 10,000 jobs.
Smash down — Demolish or break something down. The police had to smash down the door.
Sponge down — Clean something with a sponge. Give it a sponge with a damp cloth — that will remove the blood stains.
Tie down — Secure something to prevent it moving/Remove or restrict freedom. Tie down anything that might blow away in the storm.
Track down — Find after a long search. I finally managed to track him down in Manchester.
Turn down — Reject an offer, invitation. How could you turn down such a fantastic job?
Wave down — Make a hand signal to stop a vehicle. If a car comes along, wave it down.
Wind down — Slowly close a business or organisation/Relax. The factory will wind down production before closing next year.
CRITICISE/SHOW DISRESPECT
Come down on/upon — Criticise heavily. They’re coming down heavily on people for not paying their licence fees.
Put down — Criticise someone, especially when other people are present, in a way that makes them feel stupid. He’s always trying to put me down.
Run down — Criticise, disparage. You’re always running me down!
Stare down — Look at someone until they cannot look at you. He was angry but I stared him down and he left without saying much.
Talk down — Try to make something sound less important. He began his lecture by talking down the initiatives of a rival company.
Talk down to — Talk in a way to show your superiority, not communicate. I wish politicians wouldn’t talk down to us as if we were idiots.
EAT or DRINK, say that something is inside your stomach
Get down — Manage to swallow food or drink. He is having soup for dinner because can’t get solid food down yet.
Keep down — Keep food in stomach/Not vomit. He’s getting weak because he can’t keep anything down.
Slip down — Be enjoyable to drink or eat. The cold beer slipped down a treat after the walk.
Toss down — Drink quickly. I tossed a couple of drinks down before they arrived.
Wash down — Drink in order to swallow something solid. Supper was fresh salmon and vegetables, washed down with a bottle of white wine.
WRITE SOMETHING QUICKLY and without taking much care
Jot down — Make a quick note. I carry a notebook so that I can jot down any ideas.
Note down — Write something short like a phone number for future reference. I noted down his phone number.
Put down for — Make a record of what someone wants or has committed to. I’ve put you down for three tickets each.
Stick down — Write something quickly or without thinking about it/Join surfaces with glue. Just stick your details down on a piece of paper and I’ll get back to you.
Take down — Make notes or write down in full/Remove. The police officers were taking down the names of witnesses.
Write down — Make notes. I’ll write it down now so I won’t forget.
And finally, some useful phrasal verbs about RAIN:
Bucket down — Rain heavily. It’s absolutely bucketing down.
Lash down – to rain in large amounts and with a lot of force. It’s been lashing down for an hour.
Pour down — Rain hard. The rain poured down in torrents.
Rain down on — Fall in large numbers. The hail rained down on us—some of it quite large.

Hi there. We’re now going to look at some aspects about phrasal verbs and in particular phrasal verbs with DOWN.
They’re going to be quite a few phrasal verbs for the next four sections.
Phrasal verbs are made up by a normal verb, usually quite a simple verb like take, look or come followed by a preposition or even two prepositions.
When phrasal verbs have two prepositions, they’re called multi verb phrases.
Phrasal verbs are used in English a lot. So there’s something that you need to be aware of and how to use them particularly in your speaking English and also in your written English.
If you are doing exams like IELTS or the first certificate, there will be a requirement that you know phrasal verbs, you know how to use them and you know where to or not to include them.

Often it’s advised that phrasal verbs are informal language.
And, of course, they are. Any phrasal verb can be replaced by a more formal verb quite easily.
But it’s be wrong to think that phrasal verbs can only be used in an informal capacity.
Often when I read business letters or business reports, they will include from time to time phrasal verbs. So you can use them if it is appropriate to use them in the correct and right context.
Phrasal verbs will appear more frequently in informal books and writings and, of course, letters and now emails as people’s preferred choice of communication. Emails in themselves are much more informal now and therefore the English language that you see both in personal use and business use is of a more informal nature anyway so phrasal verbs come to the force. I wouldn’t get too hung up about them.
You don’t have to learn thousands and thousands of phrasal verbs because literally there are quite a lot.
But you do need to know how and when to use them.
So what I’m going to give you in these sections are a number of quite common popular English verbs and prepositions to form the phrasal verbs.
I’ll also give you examples with each of them so by the end of each of these sections hopefully you would have a better understanding of what a phrasal verb is, how to use it so that you can introduce it into both your written and your spoken English.

I will also give you some examples and some exercises that you can practise yourself.So let’s move on so the first phrasal verb and I am going to cover in this particular section are those phrasal verbs with the preposition DOWN.
I’ve got a number of verbs that we’re going to use. The first one is TO BREAK DOWN.
When we look at and use break down, you can use it to talk about some calculation, some mathematical equation. You can also use it in any other situation, formal or informal, where you want to break down a letter into its individual paragraphs, where you want to break down any type of calculation formula, any booklet concerning numbers, statistics, everything connected with that.
BREAK DOWN also has another meaning. When we talk about to break down a wall, to break down barriers perhaps.
For example, we’re trying to break down the barriers that exist between different communities.
Or if you’re trying to do some repairs or renovation to your home, you might also be talking about breaking down some walls to create more open space in your apartment or your home.

Next one TO CALM DOWN.
To calm down usually means to take things easy. Particularly we use to calm down when somebody’s getting very excited. They may be shouting and screaming. So a mother might say to a child:
Just calm down, take it easy we’ll talk about it. Everything is going to be okay.
So you’re trying to introduce an element of peace and quiet when somebody’s getting rather excited shouting and screaming. We ask them to calm down.
We can also use to calm down to describe the weather.
So there may have been a stormy night or day. Thunder, lightning, strong winds and when you come to the window, look out and you say:
Oh the weather has calmed down a little bit. We now only have a gentle breeze and there’s no further thunder or no further rain.
Next one TO COME DOWN
To come down is an instruction, an order, a command somebody might give to another person.
Please come down from that wall, you’re going to fall.
For example, a parent says to a child:
Come down at about eight o’clock and I’ll cook you dinner.
We can also say:
Come down to the city later on.
For example, if you’re living on a hill overlooking the city or some other place somebody you might say:
I’ll come down later on to the pub and I’ll buy you a drink.

The next one is TO CUT DOWN
This as it says would suggest something being brought down in size, perhaps a tree or a fence or something that is no longer required.
He cut down the trees in his back garden so that there was more light coming in.
I will cut down that fence because it is certainly blocking out the light.
We can also use to cut down a slightly different way.
To cut somebody down means to try and get them away from being a little bit pompous or a little bit superior.
You might make a comment that will cut them down to size. Meaning make them feel a little bit smaller, a little bit like the rest of us rather than being pompous and overbearing.
He quickly made a comment that cut him down in size and everybody laughed.
The next one we have is TO DIE DOWN
To die down refers to situations where they may have been some trouble.
So we’ve been watching a lot of problems in Paris France where these yellow vests people have been protesting against various issues to do with the government and they have been blocking the streets, breaking windows and has been generally a situation of unrest.
However, after a period of days or weeks the unrest disappears, discussions take place and the heat of the situation dies down.
So when something dies down, it becomes lower or it reduces in its intensity.
Like a fire that you like to keep yourself warm during the winter. We build it up during the day, put plenty of wood or whatever we are using as a fuel and then as the evening gets late we let the fire die down.
There could be situation, rumours in the newspaper about some business that’s is in trouble or somebody that has been doing something they shouldn’t have been doing. But when the journalist digs further, there’s no information or no truth to the rumours and eventually those rumours die down or go away.

Next one is TO GET DOWN
Again to get down is about some instructions so it’s usually said with a little bit of harshness in the voice.
Get down from that wall. Get down out of that tree.
A parent might insist that their son or daughter stop doing what they’re doing and get down immediately. So these are very strong or said in a strong way to give emphasis to the fact that it’s not really a request.
We can also use get down to instruct somebody else to do something that perhaps they don’t want to do.
Get down to your studies!
HOLD DOWN
Hold down means to stop something moving. You might be talking that say about a sport fixture, let’s say a rugby match which is very popular in the northern hemisphere particularly in those countries like Ireland England,Scotland, Wales and France where they play rugby to a high intensity.
During the rugby match one player held down another player and prevented him from releasing the ball.
Somebody might just ask you simply could you hold down something to stop it from moving.
Hold down that lid of the box whilst I tie some string around it.
We can also use hold down when we’re describing somebody who’s got a particular job. We mentioned that he’s been in this position for several years so we could say it quite informally:
He has held down a senior position in this company now for 10 years.
Meaning he’s well accepted, he is quite experienced and he has been in the company for some time, so he managed to hold down a job even though his bosses didn’t like him.
KEEP DOWN is the next one
To keep down can have several meanings. When we’re not feeling so well and we might be feeling nausea sand we might think we’re going to be sick, we might say to the doctor:
I find it very difficult to keep down food these days. Every time I eat I vomit. It’s always difficult for me to keep food down.
To keep down you can also use it again as an instruction.
In a war zone the captain or person in charge of the soldiers may shout an order to keep their heads down. To keep the heads down means to bend it sufficiently low not to make themselves a target for enemy and gunfire.
We can also say to keep your head down where when we’re talking metaphorically. It doesn’t literally mean to keep your head down but it means to keep out of trouble, not to let anybody notice.
My recommendation and advice to you is to keep your head down for a few months, just get on with the work and everything would be okay.

TO LET DOWN is our next phrasal verb.
Let down again has a number of meanings.
You can be let down by a colleague or a friend or a family member. Meaning they have disappointed you. They promise to do something and at the last minute they didn’t follow through and you feel let down.
For example, you were hoping to go to the big rugby match or football match and your colleague said that he would be able to get you tickets. However, the day before the match you find out that he didn’t keep his promise. So he let you down.
Oh dear, you’ve really let me down. I promised my son that I would take him to this game.
We can also use to let down when we’re referring to clothes alterations.For example, your son has grown several centimetres and you need to make his trousers longer. So you take them to the the tailor and say:
Is there any chance you could let down the hem of these trousers? They are too short.
The last one in this particular section is TO SETTLE DOWN
So again settle down has a few different meanings. It can be used when somebody finally decides that their life is about the family or that job or the career, so they decide it’s time to settle down. Means to stop acting like young man, stop travelling around the world, stop changes jobs.
It’s time for you to settle down, get yourself a permanent job,think about getting married and make something of your life.
We can also use settle down as an instruction where the teacher in a classroom comes in and there’s a lot of noise before the beginning of the the class. The kids are a little bit excited so she says:
Come on, settle down. Time to get your books out and start the work.

Фразовый глагол — это комбинация глагола и предлога, которая представляет собой одну смысловую единицу. Например, отдельно глагол look — это смотреть, а вот фразовый глагол look for уже имеет другое значение — искать…
Дааа, мальчик из этого анекдота точно не знаком c фразовыми глаголами с предлогом down.

Что ж, пусть эта шутка про дауна и будет ассоциацией (хоть и не самой позитивной) для этих фразовых глаголов.
Что они означают — да главным образом, движение вниз. Точно также, как фразовые глаголы с предлогом «up», по сути, означают движение вверх. Элементарно, Ватсон!
В значении физическое движение вниз
1) Sit down — сесть
He sat down on the bed. — Он сел на кровать.
2) Lie down — лечь
He lay down on the sofa and fell asleep. — Он лег на диван и уснул.
3) Get down — пригнуться (to — приступить)
Get down! — Ложись!
4) Kneel down — становиться на колени
He knelt down on the ground to examine the tracks. — Он встал на колени, чтобы исследовать следы.
5) Come down — рушить, падать, про болезнь
I think I’m coming down with flu. — Я, кажется, заболеваю.
6) Settle down — осесть
It’s time to settle down. — Время осесть.
7) Stand down — уйти с должности

Вы наверняка уже встречались с фразовыми глаголами в английском языке. Если нет, то вы, возможно, просто этого не осознавали. Фразовые глаголы встречаются практически повсюду, вы можете услышать их во многих фразах, употребляемых в разговоре каждый день.
Так что же это такое? Для тех, кто не знает, так называется особая конструкция, содержащая глагол и предлог. При этом предлог не всегда переводится буквально, а в совокупности с глаголом может образовать совершенно новое значение.
Так вот, в сегодняшней статье мы разберем несколько примеров фразовых глаголов с предлогом up. Как вы знаете, up указывает на движение вверх, однако в конструкциях с глаголами этот предлог зачастую утрачивает свое первоначальное значение, и выражение обретает новый смысл.
Давайте рассмотрим несколько примеров, чтобы было понятно.
1. Eat your soup!
2. Eat up your soup!

Вы заметили, что во втором предложении появился предлог up. Тем, кто плохо знаком с фразовыми глаголами, наверняка почует неладное: при чем здесь up? Как можно есть «вверх»? Да, действительно очень запутанная схема. Однако все становится на свои места, когда мы узнаем такое понятие как «фразовый глагол».
В первом предложении все понятно, оно переводится как «Ешь свой суп!». Второе же — «Доедай свой суп». Наречие up, входящее в состав фразового глагола, зачастую указывает на завершение действия. Еще один пример фразового глагола с предлогом up — «Button up your coat!». Эту фразу обычно говорят мамочки своим деткам, чтобы те застегивали свои куртки до конца — на все пуговицы.
Теперь еще один пример:
1. Helen has invited us to dinner but says we shouldn’t bother to dress up.
2. Helen has invited us to dinner but says we shouldn’t bother to dress.
В первом предложении говорится о том, что Хелен, пригласив их на обед, предупредила, что они могут особо не наряжаться, то есть прийти в повседневной одежде. Второе предложение может показаться ну очень странным, так как означает, что Хелен призывает гостей прийти к ней на ужин в чем мать родила. Вот видите, как всего 2 буквы могут кардинально изменить смысл предложения?
Посмотрим следующие примеры:
1. Andy went to his friend to tell him the news.
2. Andy went up to his friend to tell him the news.
Опять же разница в этих двух предложениях визуально незначительная. Однако смысл при этом существенно отличается. В первом предложении Энди пошел к своему другу, чтобы рассказать ему новость. А во втором случае Энди не пришлось далеко идти, так как друг находился рядом. Он просто подошел к нему, чтобы сообщить ему новость.

Fall out (with) – quarrel (with) – (поругаться с кем-л.)
Charles and Emily have fallen out again.
Pass out – to lose consciousness (потерять сознание)
Come out – 1. be published; 2. appear (1. выходить в печать, опубликовывать; 2. выходить, появляться, распуститься – о листьях и цветах)
All the flowers have come out.
My photos didn’t come out very well.
Her new book came out last week.
Look out – be aware (осторожнее, осторожно, быть на стороже)
Look out! There’s a car coming!
Bear out – confirm the truth (подтверждать чьи-л. слова, защищать, подкрепить)
Helen’s alibi was borne out by her sister.
Make out – 1. pretend (притворяться, делать вид)
Tim made out that he hadn’t seen the No Smoking sign.
2. manage to see or understand (понять, разобрать)
I couldn’t quite make out what the notice said.
Miss out – 1. fail to include (пропускать, опускать – строчку, слово и т.п.)
You have missed out a word here.
2. lose a chance – colloquial (упускать шанс/возможность)
Five people got promoted, but I missed out again.
Point out – draw attention to a fact (обращать внимание, показывать, подчеркнуть, напомнить)
I pointed out that I would be on holiday anyway.
Work out – calculate (рассчитать, решить, высчитать )
The hotel bill worked out at over £500.
Give out – be exhausted (обессилеть, иссякнуть)
When our money gave out we had to borrow some.
Wear out – make tired (изнашивать, изнурять, сильно устать)
This work has worn me out.
Carry out – complete a plan (довести дело до конца, завершать, выполнять)
The attack was successfully carried out.

Упражнения для запоминания самых необходимых фразовых глаголов. Эти упражнения позволяют научиться пользоваться фразовыми глаголами в разговоре.
Упражнение для тренировки фразовых глаголов ask out, blow out, break down, break up, fill in, fill out, figure out, fall down. Для того, чтобы запомнить эти выражения, проделывайте упражнение в течение нескольких дней. Вы можете выполнить его один раз письменно на листе бумаги, а затем свериться с ответами.
Также вы можете выполнять его устно: переводите русские предложения вслух и смотрите на правильный ответ. Необязательно каждый раз переводить предложения в том порядке, в котором они здесь представлены. Если у вас есть лишняя минутка на работе — сделайте хотя бы 3 — 4 предложения.
Важно
Главное — стараться тренироваться каждый день понемногу, и тогда слова запомнятся и перейдут в ваш активный словарный запас. Напишите или просто проговорите вслух собственные предложения с этими фразовыми глаголами. Они могут быть смешными, дурацкими и очень коротенькими.
Чем чаще вы будете их произносить вслух или писать, тем лучше вы их запомните.
