One word for success in business

It’s been my observation over the years that the single key element to a successful business is not hard work or innovation or variety.  Hard work doesn’t necessarily make a business successful as not all work is difficult or laborious.  You could put in 16 or 20 hour days in your business and not be successful.  All this kind of «hard work» will do is burn you out.

Innovation is not the key because often too much innovation ignores what works.  That old saw, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it is a good one. My dad loved the breakfast cereal Cheerios.  He liked the taste and that it didn’t get soggy right away while he read the morning paper and also the fact that the bowl he had in 1950 was pretty much the same as the bowl he had in 1990.  It was consistent quality.  The new flavors that came out over the years, innovations if you will, didn’t impress him at all…he stuck with the original.

Variety isn’t always a key to business success as it is possible to diversify your product offerings to the point your business no longer makes a profit…no one buys any one product in great enough quantity.

It’s been my observation that consistency is a true key to business success.

CONSISTENCY is an element not easy to maintain.  As example, are you able to give good customer service on a consistent basis?  Is every product you sell of  consistently good quality?  Can your product or service be counted upon to be of the same [or better] quality from one purchase or use to another?

Using the food service industry as an example, imagine a restaurant that has both dine-in services and take-out delivery services.  What business practices could give this restaurant a reputation for consistent quality of service regarding its take-out delivery services?

  1. Providing timely, friendly delivery — every time – the food arrives within the time-frame advertised and/or promised at the time the order is taken; and the food is still warm and is freshly prepared.  A restaurant that provides take-out delivery service that can achieve consistency in this area will both retain customers and gain referral customers.  Providing this type of service over and over again can equal business success.
  2. The food is delicious — every single time – there are several elements that can negatively affect this part of the restaurant’s reputation: (1) using less-than fresh ingredients; (2) skimping on ingredients; (3) cooking items ahead of time and keeping them in warming trays…food does go stale.  If you have a favorite recipe at this restaurant and you order it as part of your take-out order multiple times AND if it is delicious each and every time…you can be assured that this restaurant is following good business practices.  Consistently delicious food equals business success.

With consistency, your customers know that with every encounter with your business they will receive:

    • friendly, helpful service
    • quick and helpful answers to questions and concerns
    • products and/or services that deliver what they are supposed to deliver
    • follow-through on delivery times and dates
    • quality that does not waver from use to use

There are no guarantees in business as in life [except maybe death and taxes] but keeping a watchful eye out for what works in your business and specializing in that gives you your niche…and what your business becomes known for: consistently fine quality and service.

    Keys To Success In Business

Starting a business is something millions of people dream about, but few go further than their thoughts. Many are unsure of what are the keys are to success in business.

If you have decided to move forward with this goal and have taken it seriously, you also may be wondering what makes some people succeed at their business while others fail.

Fortunately, there are tons of resources available that can help you figure it all out.

Whether the business you wish to start is building websites, selling cupcakes or financial services, furniture, or IT services, you definitely need to learn all you can about that particular business and business in general.

If you want to greatly increase your chances of success, here are some keys to success in business that apply across board that you should follow.

    1. Make Sure You Know Your Competition

    Success in business

One of the keys to success in business is to know your competition.

Don’t be afraid of this step.

If your competition has been around for a while, they have to be doing something right, so it’s best to study what that is.

Yes, they are your competitors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn something from them.

They are very likely doing something you can imitate so that you, too, can be successful.

Study and analyze your competition at every opportunity so that you can be successful as well.

    2. Make Sure You are Organized

    Blueprint for success business

This one is difficult for some people, but you have to be organized if you are the owner of a business.

When you’re organized, you are more likely to complete daily and weekly tasks and stay on top of that “to do” list.

In fact, if you create a to-do list every single day, that alone can help you become more organized.

When you complete one of the items, check it off of your list.

This will help you stay focused as well as be a constant reminder of what you are accomplishing and what you are forgetting.

Eventually, your business will not only survive but grow and thrive as well.

    3. Get Creative!

    Business Success Tips

Creativity is one of the keys to success in business.

You need to demonstrate creativity in constantly looking for ways to improve your business and help it stand out from the others.

You have to be open to new ideas and new approaches to doing business.

That starts with admitting that you don’t know everything.

This should lead you to learn continuously.

Continuous learning is a very important part of your job as an entrepreneur, as is self-improvement and self-reflection.

Creativity starts with having an open mind and constantly learning what to do to become a better business owner.

The more you learn, the more ideas will pop into your head.

As a result, you will constantly improve your business skills and therefore, your business.

    4. Accept the Fact That You’re Going to Have to Make Sacrifices

    Small business tips for success

You might think that all of the preparations you’ve made before your business opens its doors is a lot of hard work.

The truth is, your work is only beginning.

In fact, you often have to put in more time once your doors are open than you ever did working for someone else.

This means that initially at least, you may be spending less, not more, time with your family and friends.

It doesn’t mean that it is going to be this way forever; it just means that you need to prepare to make a lot of sacrifices until you have been in business for a while.

    5. Be Consistent

    Secret to success business

There’s a saying that says, if you continue to do what you’re doing now, you’ll continue to get the results you’re getting now.

In other words, start doing the right thing for your business, and do it consistently day after day.

Your business is not likely to make money right away, but it is important to remember that if you stick with what works and never give up, your business will eventually be a success.

Being consistent is one of the keys to success in business.

Consistency creates long-term positive habits that, if practiced consistently, will produce the results you were hoping for so that you can eventually make some money.

    6. Make Sure You Keep Very Detailed Records at All Times

    Business tips for success

There is no such thing as your records being too detailed, so make them as detailed as you possibly can.

Record everything in writing, every purchase, every sale, every improvement to the building.

There are many software programs that can help you keep track of everything, and most of them have the capability of producing reports from various points of view.

Ideally, you should be able to print out a report at any time and learn which direction your business is going in.

This is only possible when you keep detailed records.

This includes recording everything either in a written manual or through a competent software package.

    7. Don’t Forget About All of the Risks and Rewards

    Success business tips

Taking calculated risks is one of the keys to being a success.

For every potential risk,  you should also be asking yourself, “what is the downside?” Your answer to that question should not make you afraid.

Instead, it will give you an idea of the worst-case scenario, which can produce great results in the end.

If you look at the whole picture, in other words, both risks and rewards, it is easier to make the right decision.

If you need help, seek it out from others with more experience, or research it online.

You may decide, after considering what could go wrong, that you don’t want to perform this certain task because the risk simply isn’t worth it.

However, at least you’ll know what your options are, and, once you know your options, it is easier to make the right decision.

    8. Remain Focused at All Times

    Tips for success in business

You shouldn’t expect your business to be a success overnight.

The chances of making real money right away are very low because you need time to let people know that you exist.

Stay focused on your short-term goals, and never lose sight of your ultimate goal, which is to be successful.

In the meantime, stay focused on your business, and eventually, you should succeed.

    9. Place a Lot of Emphasis on Great Customer Service

    Tools for business success

Without attention to the customers, your business will always fail.

If you look at the reasons for business failure, you’ll find that most businesses simply didn’t put the customer first.

Consistent, top-notch customer service is the most critical thing you can do to improve your business’s chance of success.

There is no substitute for excellent customer service, so concentrate on this before you even open the doors each day, and, eventually, you’ll move closer to the success you’ve always wanted.

    10. Don’t Be Thin-Skinned!

How to run a successful business

During the course of your business, you will suffer adversity.

The better you handle it, the better it is for both you and your business.

You may have a brand-new product that is taking longer to develop than you thought it would.

You might have a website that isn’t ready to go like you thought it would be.

The bottom line is, these things are going to happen; that is a guarantee.

People will disappoint you, vendors and wholesalers won’t come through, but, at the end of the day, it is your reaction to these things that counts the most.

This is why you should learn to handle the adversity of all types, which can make you a stronger businessperson and a stronger individual.

    11. Accept the Fact That Often, Your Best Ideas Will Come When You’re Not at Work

How to have a successful business

If you have an important decision to make and can’t seem to come up with the best solution, take a shower, take a walk, or listen to some music.

Your best decisions could come while you’re not concentrating on them.

In fact, taking a mental break from the office could increase your creative juices so that, in the end, you come up with a better solution than you would’ve had if you remained in the office and concentrated exclusively on the problem.

    12. Be Aware of the Traps That Success Can Put You In

How to build a successful business

Once you become successful, don’t let it overpower you or allow you to become overly confident.

Success can make a fool out of you if you let it.

As Bill Gates once said success could make successful people feel like they can never lose.

Even if you have been successful for years, that could end without notice for many reasons, including a bad economy.

Success can make you feel undefeatable.

It can even make you think that you are better than your peers.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy your success.

    You can.

It simply means take it with a grain of salt.

    People make mistakes.

They make the wrong business decisions.

When this happens, it can be very difficult for an entrepreneur who has never experienced failure.

If you know what failure tastes like, you can pick yourself up and try again.

Many successful business people, in fact, think that the most dangerous thing in the world is for a business owner to never experience failure.

Success isn’t bad, but the results of this success could be bad if you don’t handle it right.

    13. Make Sure You Unplug from Everything Once a Week

Successful business tipsTo stay focused, you have to remain clear-headed.

One of the best ways to do this is to unplug from everything at least once a week.

This means to unplug from your cell phone, computer, tablet, and everything else.

You need at least one day a week to concentrate on things other than your business.

If your business is open seven days a week, consider taking off one day a week and leaving a manager in charge.

If that is impossible, at least unplug for an hour or more once a week.

Unplugging from the digital world on a regular basis is good for the soul, and, in the end, it will make you much more creative.

    14. Never Stop Learning

How to be a successful business owner

This is one of the keys to success in business that many entrepreneurs forget about.

    No one knows everything.

This is a good thing to always keep in mind.

Learn about your business, marketing, promotion, the world in general, and anything you can.

Just make sure you are continuously learning something.

The more you learn, the better you will be at any business you’re a part of.

Learning is easier than ever nowadays.

Take a night class, an online class, or take an occasional trip to the library.

All of these tasks will result in learning more than you knew before, which can contribute to your business’s success more than you thought.

    15. Always Have a “Plan B”

    Building a successful business

Setbacks are a part of every entrepreneur’s life, but what can set you apart is your ability to respond in the right way to these setbacks.

For example, if you feel that you need to borrow more money because of extra production or inventory costs, don’t automatically assume that you’ll have to borrow up to your limit.

Research your books and go over your finances with a fine-toothed comb.

You may be able to cut out some expenses that will reduce the amount you intend to borrow.

In other words, look at all of your alternatives, not just one.

Don’t assume that there is only one way out.

    16. Consider Yourself Already Successful

    Build a successful business

Chances are that if you can picture yourself being a successful entrepreneur, you are going to achieve that goal a lot sooner.

    The opposite is also true.

If you think that you are going to fail or not make much progress, that is exactly what will happen.

Regardless of your talent or how hard you work, what you think is going to greatly affect the outcome.

Your attitude can affect everything from developing a creative idea to dealing with the people in your organization and even concentrating on analytical issues.

Thinking “failure” stops you dead in your tracks.

In turn, you are less able to focus on your goals and develop creative ideas.

There are, however, tips that help you “think” success, and below are a few of them.

    • Celebrate all of your achievements
    • Learn from and Shrug off all setbacks;
    • Have a five-year success plan
    • In tough situations, always brainstorm possible solutions
    • Be continuously open to new ideas
    • Always operate with integrity and honesty
    • Always keep in mind that it’s you who ultimately controls your chances of success – not others
    • Keep yourself in great shape physically
    • Make sure you always have a support system
    • Keep in mind that with each day, you have new opportunities to succeed.

Starting a business can be nerve-wracking.

Learn from other businesses’ successes, even if they are competitors.

Keep researching and learning what to do to become successful in your business.

    Most importantly, never give up.

These are just a few keys to a successful business that will help you in your journey.

    1. “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” – Winston Churchill

Churchill lead Britain through one of its darkest periods. With enemies threatening to advance across the English Channel, bombing London daily, the pressure to survive was paramount. But Churchill, like any entrepreneur worth their salt, understood that failure was part of the process. One learned from their mistakes, and the greatest lesson was that there was always another day to fight on.

    winston Churchill business quote

    2. “Play by the rules, but be ferocious.” – Phil Knight

The brand that gave us “Just do it!” qualifies that tagline, which always felt a bit broad, to include boundaries. You can’t “just do it” without regard to the rules, as Knight clearly states. Those rules are what level the playing field and protect fair competition. But rules have nothing to do with the passion in which you play within them.

    Phil knight business quote

    3. “Business opportunities are like buses, there’s always another one coming.” – Richard Branson

Branson’s Virgin has proven that from record labels to airlines, where there is a will there is a way. The door isn’t always open, but sometimes it’s ajar or the key is on the floor. All you must do is pick it up and turn the lock. Basically, the right environment for success ebbs and flows, but a keen businessperson is never passive.

    4. “Every problem is a gift—without problems we would not grow.” – Anthony Robbins

The idea that one can go through life without conflict or issues arising is unrealistic. Some might dream of a frictionless ride through the world as the ideal journey, but without some form of pushback, growth is impossible. It is these problems that we face which build our character, engage our creativity and build humility.

    5. “You only have to do a few things right in your life so long as you don’t do too many things wrong.” – Warren Buffett

The idea of right and wrong is a construct, of course, and it might feel overly simplistic to suggest that making the right choices will smooth the path forward. But the famous investor is merely noting with this business quote that avoiding a wrong decision is as important as making the right one. Avoiding bad decisions is aided, of course, with careful planning.

    Warren Buffett business quote

    6. “Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.” – Henry David Thoreau

Philosopher, naturalist, essayist, etc.—Thoreau knew a thing or two about productivity. He wisely saw that those who are seeking success are more likely romanticizing the idea and not doing the hard, practical work necessary to achieve it.

    Henry David Thoreau business quote

    7. “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” – Anaïs Nin

Nin was no stranger to the creative act. As a writer, she had to take pen to paper or her stories would remain phantoms in her mind. It is safer to keep these ideas to oneself. There’s no rejection or criticism that way, but there’s also no way to hone one’s skills and produce something of value.

    Anais non business quote

    8. “There’s no shortage of remarkable ideas, what’s missing is the will to execute them.” – Seth Godin

Writer and former dotcom businessman, Godin is saying that talk is cheap, but in a nicer way. Yes, ideas are a dime a dozen, but the real meat on those bones comes from trying to realize them. It is only then that the problems show up and the real work of resolving them starts.

    9. “I owe my success to having listened respectfully to the very best advice, and then going away and doing the exact opposite.” – G.K. Chesterton

Chesterton, a writer of paradoxical stories, is the contrarian on our list. He speaks for the pig-headed and visionary alike. Sometimes one must buck the conventional wisdom. The hard part is knowing whether you’re acting out of conviction for your ideals or if you’re just being deluded by ego.

    g.k Chesterton business quote

    10. “I don’t know the word ‘quit.’ Either I never did, or I have abolished it.” – Susan Butcher

She’s not being literal, but rather exaggerating to make a point. There comes a time in everyone’s life where the idea of just throwing in the towel is attractive. You’re exhausted. The obstacles feel insurmountable. But those who can reject the idea of quitting and tap an unforeseen reservoir are usually those who cross the finish line.

    Susan butcher business quote

    11. “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” – Theodore Roosevelt

People get caught up in the product and forget the worth of anything lies in the process. Win or lose, it’s the fact that you tried, with all you could offer, to do the best at something you feel is of value. That alone is rewarding.

    Theodore roosevelt business quote

    12. “If you really look closely, most overnight successes took a long time.” – Steve Jobs

We only see the success after it’s been reached. Like a tree that reaches the clouds, the roots that hold it up are invisible. They’re beneath the ground, having spent years digging through the hard ground to stabilize and feed the tree’s growth. It is also so with business.

    Steve Jobs business quote

    13. “Almost everything worthwhile carries with it some sort of risk, whether it’s starting a new business, whether it’s leaving home, whether it’s getting married, or whether it’s flying into space.” – Chris Hadfield

True, but not all risks are created equally. Going into space feels like a bigger risk than starting a company. That puts things in perspective, though, and acknowledges the fact that nothing is without risk, therefore, don’t try to completely bubble-wrap your enterprise. Play it safe, of course, but not to the point of inertia.

    Chris Hadfield business quote

    14. “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” – Will Rodgers

America’s ambassador of good cheer did more than pass out smiles in his life. He offered practical business advice: complacency is death. Even if you’re doing the right thing, if you’re not moving forward, constantly pushing yourself to reach beyond your comfort zone, then you’re in trouble. The competition will overtake you.

    will Rodgers business quote

    15. “The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won’t. It’s whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to persevere.” – Barack Obama

The president knows a lot about failure and success. The Affordable Healthcare Act was more than once dead in the water, but the president didn’t give up. He compromised, he convinced and he labored, but not once did he allow himself to become embittered.

    16. “Forget past mistakes. Forget failures. Forget everything except what you’re going to do now and do it.” – William Durant

There is only the present, so the enlightened ones tell us, and we cannot allow ourselves to become tied to the past or enchanted by the future. There is only the here and now. We must concentrate on that and act. This quote doesn’t reject the lessons of the past or the plans for the future, but we only have this moment, so do your best in it.

    William durant business quote

    17. “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.” – Albert Einstein

You’ll have noticed that often one inspirational quote contradicts the next. That’s because it is in these paradoxes that real wisdom is born. There is never just one way to look at something and with perspective comes opportunity. Ideas might be nothing without execution, but without those ideas the execution is empty.

    Albert Einstein business quote

    18. “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired and success achieved.” – Helen Keller

People should take failure as a badge of honor. It’s a crucible that burns things down to their essence and shows us what we’re really made from. If the path to success was clear, then everyone would be one it and success would lose all meaning.

    Helen Keller business quote

    19. “The first one gets the oyster, the second gets the shell.” – Andrew Carnegie

It sounds brutal, and one doesn’t become a steel baron without nerves of steel, but there is a harsh truth in this statement. Resources are exploited by businesses to achieve their goals. They’re not a collective, sharing the wealth, so like the early bird, if you want the worm, then get up early.

    Andrew Carnegie business quote

    20. “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” – Walt Disney

The more business quotes from these masters of industry and history, the more you notice a common thread knitting them together. They tend to same things only in different ways. That alone should make it clear that actions speak louder than words, to use another old axiom.

    Walt Disney business quote

    21. “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right!” – Henry Ford

This statement might confuse at first, but once you get it, like a Zen koan, it makes perfect sense. What the father of automotive automation is imparting with this quote is that success is as much a mind game as it is determined by fate. With the right attitude you can do almost anything.

    Henry ford business quote

    22. “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure.” – Colin Powell

Inspiration is great, but there’s no point in reinventing the wheel. The general is right. Success is being prepared, working hard and learning from mistakes, as many others have also stated. If we can edit the quote a wee bit, we’d add luck to fill out the recipe for success. There’s always an unknown element in the mix.

    23. “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” – Albert Schweitzer

Many people have it backwards, struggling to achieve success in order to feel good about themselves. But the irony is that it’s in the doing, not the goal, where the happiness resides. Even if you fail at your enterprise, if you enjoy the process, then you’ll be happy.

    Albert Schweitzer business quote

    24. “Success is often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable.” – Coco Chanel

If you’re keeping your eyes on what can go wrong, it will go wrong. Successful people strive to move on. They aren’t ignorant of failure, but they’re also not stymied by it. They don’t know what failure is, because to them it’s merely a bump in the road, not its terminus.

    coco Chanel business quote

    25. “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” – Thomas Edison

The famous story about Edison and the incandescent lightbulb, which took thousands of tries to find a filament that would burn but not extinguish, is proof to the pudding of his statement. You just never know what’s around the corner until you get there.

    Thomas Edison business quote

    26. “I feel that luck is preparation meeting opportunity.” – Oprah Winfrey

We spoke of luck as a crucial element to any success. There are always those forces beyond our control, but there are also those forces which are within our ability to regulate. If opportunities are rare, then one must be ready for them when they come in order to take advantage. That might not be the definition of luck, but it does feel like good fortune.

    Oprah Winfrey business quote

    27. “I never dreamed about success. I worked for it.” – Estée Lauder

People can get lost in thought. In their mind’s eye success is clearly laid out. It’s as if they’re already there. Daydreaming might be creative, but creativity takes work. You’re not going to get anywhere standing in place.

    28. “Yesterday’s home runs don’t win today’s games.” – Babe Ruth

This has been said in many ways, but sometimes it takes the sports analogy to get it to sink through. Of course, for Ruth this wasn’t a metaphor but fact. However, it also applies to business. We can’t rest on past glory.

    29. “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.” – Vidal Sassoon

It’s a funny way to look at things, but there’s truth in the fact that success is not something we are handed. It is something we must work at. Success isn’t inheritance. While we might get handed great wealth, power and prestige, it’s what we do with it that counts.

    30. “The only way around is through.” – Robert Frost

What the great America poet is saying is that there is no way to avoid what must be done. We cannot go around the difficulties in our life or business but face them head on and work through them. Just having the courage to do that is the hallmark of success.
