Hello,

there are two versions of the lyrics of a song of James Blunt (You’re beautiful). What does the «fucking high» version mean? Does it mean the same as «Flying high»? And is that a state of euphoria because «she is beautiful» or is he euphoric, especially from the effects of drugs or alcohol or something completely different?

<< Excessive quotation deleted. >>
She could see from my face that I was,
Flying high, [ — video/radio edited version]
Fucking high, [ — CD version]
And I don’t think that I’ll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

«Fucking» is an all-purpose adjective that often means «really»: I was fucking high. He’s fucking stupid, etc.

Both the cleaned-up version and the CD version mean the same thing. I get the idea that Blunt was referring to being under the influence of some drug rather than being intoxicated by her beauty, but that’s just a guess.

Well, but flying doesn’t mean the same as fucking, even in the context of these lyrics. In fact, that they don’t mean the same thing is especially true in the context of these lyrics since flying high is an idiom that means «to be elated.» You can certainly become elated under the influence of drugs, but there are other ways. Fucking in this context does mean, as Owlman said, very. So in santizing the lyrics, they changed the meaning slightly. This isn’t at all unusual, though.

I wouldn’t be so sure about the lyrics being changed, Kate, just sanitized, as you so aptly put it.

Flying high — one word conveying the idea of «being under the influence of drugs» — to fly (why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly), the other (high) employed as an intensifier
Fucking high — the same goes for this, but it’s the other way round. fucking used as an emphasis, high to convey the idea of…

But that’s only the way I see it.

No, you make a good point, Dreamlike. But what I’m saying is that however you define «flying high,» flying never means «very,» whereas fucking often does. So even if you ignore the idiom flying high, it does change the meaning slightly from «very high» to merely «high.»

    dreamlike

I see your point, you’re right :) But in the end, I think it hardly matters and we’re just splitting hairs (which is a fun to do I must say :D)

I agree with Owlman. The second expression just means, very here — very high, really high. The first expression does not necessarily have to be related to drugs. It may mean just simply euphoric, ecstatic, depending on the context.

    dreamlike

    • #9

It’s clear from the unedited, foul-language version that the state of euphoria was drug-induced. Besides, being on drugs is often referred to as «flying», for what I know.

    • #10

Flying high does not have to be drug related — this is why they allowed the phrase in the radio version.
