When you attempt to print a Microsoft Word document or send the document as a fax, you may receive the following error message:
No printers are installed. To install a printer, point to Settings on the Windows Start menu, click Printers, and then double-click Add Printer. Follow the instructions in the wizard.
To determine the unique number that is associated with the message that you receive, press CTRL+SHIFT+I. The following number appears in the lower-right corner of this message:
600191
You may receive this message even though you have a printer installed.
What To Try
Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
There is no default printer driver installed
If you have a printer connected to the computer, but you do not have a default printer set up, use the Add Printer Wizard to install your printer and set it as the default.
If your printer is installed already, follow these steps.

On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
NOTE: In Microsoft Windows XP, click Printers and Faxes on the Windows Start menu.

A printer driver is damaged and requires reinstallation
You need your Microsoft Windows CD-ROM, the printer driver disk, or the CD-ROM from the printer vendor to complete this procedure.

Right-click your default printer, and then click Delete. If you are asked whether you want to remove extra files left on the system, click Yes.

Double-click the Add Printer icon, and then follow the instructions to reinstall your printer driver.
If you have a printer driver that is supplied by your printer manufacturer, or you need to obtain an updated driver from your printer manufacturer, refer to one of the articles that is listed in the «More Information» section for contact information.
The Win.ini file has incorrect, duplicate, or missing entries
You may need to correct the Win.ini file. To complete this procedure, you need to know the name of your printer driver.
NOTE: This cause does not apply to Windows Vista, to Microsoft Windows 2000, or to Microsoft Windows XP. The Win.ini file is used in Microsoft Windows 98 and in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) to load certain settings for the system. In Windows Vista, in Microsoft Windows 2000, and in Microsoft Windows XP, the Win.ini file is used for backwards compatibility.

Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

In the Named box, type Win.ini.

In the Look in box, click your local hard drive, and then click Find Now.
The Win.ini file is displayed at the bottom of the Find dialog box.

Check the file size in the Size column. If it is larger than 64 kilobytes (KB), the Win.ini file is considered large. A large Win.ini file may indicate duplicate entries, which can cause this error message.
NOTE: A very large Win.ini file may indicate a damaged Win.ini file. If you suspect the Win.ini file is damaged, see the «The Win.ini File Is Damaged, or There Are Other Problems with the File» section of this article.

Double-click the Win.ini file to open it. If the file is too large to open in Notepad, click Yes on the following message:

Look for duplicate entries or sections. If you find any duplicate sections, you can comment them out by placing a semicolon (;) in front of the duplicate lines.

The Devices section of the win.ini should list the friendly name of your printer, followed by an equal sign, the driver name, a comma, and then the port or network path.
If the Devices section is missing, add it, as in the following example:

After the computer restarts, attempt to print the document again in Word.
The Win.ini file is damaged, or there are other problems with the file
If the previous methods fail, you must create a new Win.ini file. Use this last method only after you attempt the previous methods.

IBM Client Access/400 software is installed
This error message can occur when you have the IBM Client Access/400 software installed. You can resolve the problem by uninstalling the IBM Client Access/400 software, but this may not be an ideal solution in most cases.
To help resolve this problem, contact IBM to determine whether you have the latest available patch.
There is a problem with the way that your fax software is set up
If you receive this error message when you attempt to send a fax, there may be a problem with the way that your fax software is set up. If your fax software is provided by a third party, refer to the documentation included with the software, or use the links in the «More Information» section of this article to locate the manufacturer of your fax software.

Hi All,
Been having a problem recently on many PC’s at a site where they run Windows 7 x64 with Office 2010 x86.
Printing usually happens with no issue, however sometimes when they click the print icon, (in the ‘file—>print’ section) it will display ‘word cannot print, there is no printer installed’.
The client tells me they can go to control panel and print a test page successfully, but word/excel will not print. In order to resolve the issue they close the program, reopen it and printing works straight away. Today I asked them to restart the print
spooler, instead of closing/reopening word, this did not resolve the issue. closing and reopening did fix the issue.So far they have experienced the issue with Word and Excel only, however they don’t use the other programs a great deal.
The printers are distributed with group policy. In addition to network printers they use PDF Factory (which is like PDF Creator).
I have been unable to reproduce the issue.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

ATK, I wondered, are you running x64 or x86 Office?

as we couldn’t get access to 64 Bit BCM, now we have 64 Bit BCM so we can try this out.-

Problem Description
After the installing KB3125574 “Convenience rollup update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1” on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 you can experience the following error messages if you try to print from Word, Excel, PowerPoint or if you click on the properties of a Xerox print queue object.
In our case it was a Xerox 3615 but this can happen with other Xerox Printer Models too.

Error Messages
- If you try to print from Word, Excel or PowerPoint you can receive the following error message ;
Word cannot print there is no printer installed.
- If you click on the properties of a Xerox Print Queue Object you can receive the following error message ;
The 'Xerox Global Print Driver PCL6' printer driver is not installed on this computer. Some printer properties will not be accessible unless you install the printer driver. Do you want to install the driver now ?
- If you try to install the ‘Xerox Global Print Driver PCL6’ printer driver you can receive the following error message ;
Windows can't install the Xerox Global Print Driver PCL6 kernel-mode print driver. To obtain a driver that is compatible with the version of Windows you are running. contact the manufacturer.
Root Cause
We have updated 180 Windows 7 SP1 PC’s with the KB3125574 and only on 25 PC’s we have experienced this problem. In our case we proceed as follows to figure out the root cause of these error messages and misbehavior. We have backed up the Spool folder before and after KB3125574 installation on the problematic PC’s.
Afterwards we have compared the Spool folders with an comparison tool and figured out that some printer driver components from Xerox 3615 “Xerox Global Print Driver PCL6” were definitely deleted. During the installation of KB3125574 on some Windows 7 SP1 PC’s something went wrong.
We still don’t know exactly why the Convenience Update misbehaved on some PC’s. But one thing is clear, its definitely a BUG inside KB3125574 . Further investigation is needed.

Solution
There are two solutions available. You can select one of the two solutions which best fits to you.
1. Uninstalling KB3125574 and restarting the PC or Server. This will fix the problem too because during the installation of KB3125574 Windows backups the whole spool folder and restores it back after the uninstallation of KB3125574.
2. You can use rundll32 to re-install the printer driver on to your affected PC. rundll32 is required because the driver installation via the wizard isn’t possible due to the remaining driver components and registry entries.

Microsoft Word is a popular word processing software developed by Microsoft. It comes with a lot of features that help you create a professional document. After creating a document, you can print it directly by giving the print command to Word. But for some users, the print feature in Word is not working as expected. According to them, whenever they give the print command to Microsoft Word, they receive the “We couldn’t print because there doesn’t seem to be a printer installed” error message. If you are also experiencing such a problem in Word, the solutions provided in this article will help you fix the issue.
Cannot print from Microsoft Word
When you encounter the “We couldn’t print” error in Word for the first time, restart your computer and check if the problem is fixed. Sometimes, problems get fixed simply by restarting the computer. One possible cause of the printer-related problems is the connection issues between your computer and the printer. Check if you can print from another software. If yes, the problem is associated with Microsoft Word. If you cannot print from software check your printer connections. Remove your printer and add it again to fix the problem.

You can update Office by launching any Office program, like Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc. To do so, open any Office program and go to “File > Account.” You will see the option to update Office there.
2] Print using another Office program
You can also try this simple fix. Close Microsoft Word and open another Office program, say Microsoft Excel. Create a new spreadsheet or open an existing one. Now, print the spreadsheet from Excel and see if you get the same error as Word. If not, close Microsoft Excel and open Microsoft Word. Now, give the print command to Word. See if the error occurs this time.
3] Run Microsoft Word as an administrator
Another fix to try is to run Microsoft Word as an administrator. The following steps will help you run Microsoft Word as an Administrator:
- Click on Windows Search and type Word.
- Right-click on Microsoft Word and select Run as Administrator.
If this does not fix your problem, try the next solution.
4] Change your default printer
The printer-related problems in Microsoft Office applications can be fixed by changing the default printer. The error “We couldn’t print because there doesn’t seem to be a printer installed” might be occurring because Word is not able to access your default printer. In such cases, change your default printer and see if this fixes the issue. Try to make virtual printers, like Microsoft XPS Document Writer as your default printer.
5] Check for problematic add-in
One possible cause of the problem is a problematic add-in. To check this, disable add-ins installed in Word one by one and print the document after disabling each add-in. This process will take some time but you will be able to identify the problematic add-in (if any).
The following steps will guide you on how to disable an add-in in Word:
- Launch Microsoft Word.
- Open a document or create a new blank document.
- Go to “File > Options.”
- Select Add-Ins from the left side.
- Select COM Add-ins in the Manage drop-down and click on the GO button.
- Deselect the add-in that you want to disable and click OK.
6] Troubleshoot in a Clean Boot state
One possible cause of the problem is a conflicting third-party background application. To check if this is the case with you, troubleshoot your computer in a Clean Boot state. In a Clean Boot state, Windows is launched only with essential services and apps. All other apps and services remain disabled.
After starting your computer in a Clean Boot state, launch Microsoft Word and print your document. See if it displays the error message. If not, a background app is causing the problem. To identify that application, enable some of the disabled applications and start your computer in a normal state. Now launch Word and print your document. See if you receive the error message. If yes, one of the applications that you have just enabled is the culprit.
Now, disable the startup apps one by one and print from Word after you disable each app. This will help you identify the problematic app. Once you find it, consider uninstalling it.
7] Repair Office
If some of the Office files are corrupted, you will get different errors in different Office programs. Such types of issues can be fixed by repairing Office. Run a Quick Repair and see if it helps. If Quick Repair does not fix the problem, run an Online Repair.
8] Uninstall and reinstall Office
If none of the above solutions fixed your problem, uninstall and reinstall Office.

Why does it say my printer is not installed?
The error “Printer is not installed” occurs when there are connection issues between your computer and the printer or the printer is not installed correctly. To resolve this issue, remove your printer from your computer and add it again. This process will reinstall the printer on your system. If this does not work, you can try some other fixes like running the Printer Troubleshooter, updating the printer drivers, troubleshooting your computer in a Clean Boot state, etc.
How do I reset my printer on Windows 11/10?
Resetting printers to the factory default settings is the easiest way to resolve printer-related issues. Printers of different brands have a different process to reset them. Hence, to reset your printer to factory default settings, refer to its user manual.

I have a user that just got a new HP P4015 using HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (v6.5.0) driver. (There are 7 other users with the same driver installed, working fine). These printers are managed by a 3rd party printer company, but we are running into an issue with one user. Windows 10 Pro v1709 with O365 Business Premium. When the user tries to print from Word she gets an error «We couldn’t print because there doesn’t seem to be a printer installed «.
Here are the details of what’s been tried and general info. If I think of anything else I’ll add it to the list.
- Other apps work fine, even when Word does not
- A reboot usually fixes the issue temporarily
- The printers are all managed from Server 2012 R2 Essentials
- Tried re-installing the printer numerous times
- Tried online repair for MS Office
- This printer is set as the default printer
- Uninstalled Sophos AV
- Printer connected via IP over the LAN
- Enable bidirectional support is NOT checked

Is there any change in behaviour if you turn off «SNMP Status Enabled» in the port settings for that printer?
And have you tried using the Universal PostScript driver?

I’ll try the SNMP status tomorrow. I am not sure on the PostScript driver. There are 7 other users with the same printer using the universal so this «should» work. I can try it though. I know the print management company was having trouble with different drivers since the users have duplex, envelope feeders and multiple trays.

Office and Windows are fully up to date. The repair was done when the AV was installed, I can run it again. System is 64bit, same as server. I haven’t tried XPS. The printer is installed through the server and the port is using TCP/IP.

SNMP is enabled as is the same with all other printers. I’ll disable it and see if it makes a difference. I think it’s a Windows 10 issue really since there are multiple other users with the same config and it works fine. Though the other users are running 10 as well. I think it’s local to the computer.
I’m going to run the Office Online repair again once the user leaves for the day. I’ll report back tomorrow after the user tries to print.

My profile works fine. Seems to be an issue with her account. I’m going to delete her domain profile from her computer and rebuild it. Hopefully that will fix it. Also, other users can print to her printer and she cannot print to other printers. So it seems to just be tied to her profile.

If folder redirection ‘n other typical domain stuff are in place, should be easy enough to blow away her profile and just log in again…get a fresh profile, and let it rebuild. Check to see what’s synced…save what’s necessary (don’t forget Outlook signature if she has one)

Hopefully should see folder redirection and the group policy that hands out printers.
Could also check and do some simple cleaning up of the local print spooler…blow out old/unused drivers, sorta let it start clean. Many times I»ll run into networks from other techs where they never clean out old drivers when replacing printers. (shame shame)

In this case there is no folder redirection, just mapped drives where they are supposed to store their data, but as usual there is some local. I also just created the group policy last night to deploy printers, before they were manually added to each machine. I’ll check print management on the local machine for extra drivers. I’m sure there are some, the printer management company doesn’t do any cleanup. Good thought.

Removed all old drivers in print management, same issue. Rebuilt user profile, which seemed to work for a day and back to getting the no printer installed error. Scheduled to pick it up on Thursday for N&P.

N&P going from Windows 10 v1709 to v1803 resulted in the same error after a day or two. The print management company put the old printer back in place, which was working perfectly fine before the new one was installed and the user is having issues with Word saying the printer is offline even though other apps work fine. I updated the BIOS today and will wait to see what happens with that.

I’d stick to PCL for most printing, HP’s Uni drivers are my preferred. I’ll load up PS drivers on the server share but usually only deploy those to users that do heavy graphics (like Adobe stuff)…as that’s what PS print drivers are more for.
For giggles if this user is not a member of the local Admin group on this PC…try doing that.
Although a band aid fix…can add the printer locally via its TCP/IP address and set it as the default…instead of going through the server share.
Another one I’ve seen happen once in a blue moon, user account on the server is a bit awry…we’ve had issues we’ve spend days chasing, ended up removing the user account on the server…(after backing up their data), removing that users local profile, create new domain user account for them, and then create fresh profile on that workstation.

I would agree it seems to be hardware based, but the only thing that is troublesome is the printer and MS Word.

My guess is bad printer, but failing that my next guess would be bad RAM in the unit.
We put the old printer back in place, which was working perfectly fine before the office had all new printers brought in and we had a similar issue. The only thing that remains the same is the physical computer and the user.

Well, when I tested from my account it was fine, however the issue doesn’t happen every day so this could have been a fluke that it worked at that time.
No one else has reported an issue when printing to this printer.
This is a law office and the user is an assistant. The attorney can print to this assistants printer no problem at any time.
All printers in the office have been setup through the 2012 R2 server using Print Management/Group Policy, however when the printer management company brought the old printer back in they installed the driver on the computer and it is not configured through GPO.
They are using the Universal PCL from HP, though they have tested several.
None of the users are local admins, but it’s worth a try. I’m going to wait a day or two to see if the BIOS update makes any difference, which I can’t see that it would.
