Hello everyone,
I wonder if it’s correct to use ‘no longer’ as it is used in the following context.
I would consider leaving my family to work overseas for a year or two, but no longer. I think it is important for families to stay together, so I would only want to go overseas for a short time.
Shouldn’t it be not longer instead?
-
#2
No, it shouldn’t — “no longer [than that]” is perfect in that sentence.
No longer can mean “not any more” or “not as before”. But it also means “not for any longer time”.
-
#3
Thank you, lingobingo. Would not longer be incorrect in that place?
-
#4
Not longer can also be used, as can not any longer.
-
#5
OK. Would not longer mean the same as no longer if it was used in that place?
-
#6
Yes. (What else could it mean?)
-
#7
I see. So it looks like no longer and not longer are interchangeable in this kind of context.
Thank you very much for your help!
