  • Hi

My setup is: Windows 7 Ultimate x64, Office pro 2010

I have a problem where my right click mouse og select text isn’t working in Word and Outlook. My keyboard os working fine, and my mouse cursor moves fine, but if I try to select text with the mouse og rightclick to copy/paste something nothing happens. Its
    driving me crazy.

I have searched the web and found some different solutions but none seems to work permanently.

One option is to use Internet Explorer Settings > advanced > Reset to default.
Another is to delete the Word / Data key from Registry editor
Now I can start Word and start typing in a single line…and it works… until I hit enter the first time. then the mouse isn’t working again. the same thing happens in Outlook when writing an email.

I have tried running the Office 2010 repair tool with not effect.

Please help — this is driving me crazy

Best regards and feel free to ask you need me to clarify someting or test something.

  • Hi,

Have you tryed changing the hive Office to Office.old in the registry yet?

    1) Regedit

    2) HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> SOFTWARE >> MICROSOFT

    3) Inside the hive MICROSOFT  righ click the hive Office and rename it to Office.old

    4) Exit Regedit and try with a new doc/e-mail

This will reset your Office settings at the user level, no danger.

Mouse Not Working, Can’t move insertion point or select text Word
Symptoms

1) The common fixes from the past do not resolve this problem on Windows
64-bit

2) When you open an existing Word document you are able to use the mouse a
usual to move the insertion point cursor to different sections of th
document, to select objects (like pictures) within the document, and t
highlight existing text as expected. As soon as you type anything ne
anywhere in the document the mouse can no longer be used to move th
insertion point to another location in the document nor can it select text o
objects. The arrow and shift keys still allow you to move around th
document and select objects

3) When you create a new document you are able to type normally and use th
Enter key to add text to the Word document. As soon as you type anything i
the document the mouse can no longer be used to move the insertion point t
another location in the document nor can it select text or objects. Th
arrow and shift keys still allow you to move around the document and selec

4) You CAN use the mouse to select Word menus and buttons on the ribbon ba
but you cannot use the mouse on or inside the Word document itself once th
condition occurs after typing begins. The mouse works fine and as expecte
in Excel and every other application

5) As soon as ANY open Word document is impacted by the «mouse stoppe

until Word is closed and you start the tests over again

Solutions that did not work for me

Similar symptoms have been reported by others using Word 2007 and 2003 o
Windows 7, Vista, and XP but I have not found an acceptable solution to thi
problem with this system configuration. It seems related to some kind of UA
or permission problem or is 64-bit specific but I am not certain

I have already tried the following

— Rerun Office Suite 2007 SP2 to confirm it was installed

— Tried (twice) to rename the original
«HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice12.0WordData» registry key a
suggested in these posts. The new Data key gets created by Word and ne
values are added to the registry key but problem remains

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vistawu/thread/c64e9c05-2bc4-4837-aec1-fb675120403

— Other posts out there blame various Word Add-ins for the problem and hav
had success disabling or removing them
http://www.itwriting.com/blog/140-annoying-word-2007-problem-cant-select-text.htm

I only had 3 Add-ins showing as active, all from Microsoft. Two Visua
Studio Tools for Office COM Add-ins and one Smart Tag «Person Name» add in
I ran Word as admin so I could disable both of the COM Add-ins. I rename
the FNAME.DLL file so the «Person Name» Add-in would not load because th
Word GUI had all Smart Tag options dimmed and would not let me uncheck that
Add-in from the UI. I restarted Win, launched Word, and it showed no Active
Application or Document Related Add-ins. No luck, mouse problem still
present with all Add-ins removed.

Bad Workaround:

— The only way I have found to USUALLY get the mouse to behave as expected
and eliminate the problems described here is to force Word to «Run this
program as administrator???. I opened the properties of the «Microsoft Office
Word 2007″ shortcut in the start menu, chose Compatibility tab, and chose
that option under privilege level. Without running Word as administrator I
have been unable to eliminate these mouse problems.

— Once you force Word to Run as admin, you now get the annoying warning
prompt from Windows that asks you if it is okay to run as admin every time
you start Word. This would be an almost tolerable workaround if all you ever
did was create brand new Word documents. If you want to work on an existing
Word document this solution is not a good one, here is why:

1) If you want to open an existing Word document from either the Windows 7
recent jump list menu or by double-clicking a Word doc file, the delay caused
by the UAC prompt every time you start Word generates an error of, «There was
a problem sending the command to the program.», and the document you wanted
to open is not loaded into Word. You get the Word shell launched with no
document. The only way to open an existing document while running as admin
and getting the UAC prompt is to launch Word with no document or a new blank
document and then manually open the existing document you really wanted via
the Word menus.

2) As a temporary option I tried to disable User Account Control (UAC)
completely by telling it to NEVER notify me about anything. You would think
that this would allow you to run Word as admin without the delay caused by
the UAC prompt and then Word would open existing documents from the taskbar
or by double-clicking as desired. I did the required restart after disabling
UAC and confirmed that Word was still set to «run as admin». To my surprise,
when UAC is totally disabled and no longer prompts you for permission each
time you launch Word, the «run as admin» trick STOPS working. The existing
documents now load from the taskbar or by double-clicking as desired because
the UAC prompt delay is gone BUT the mouse problems come back!

3) I have no idea why «run as admin» ONLY works if UAC prompts you for
permission first and does NOT work if you tell it not to prompt you but that

**Update to the «Bad Workaround» section: I experience the EXACT samebehavior
**Update to the «Bad Workaround» section: I experience the EXACT same
behavior if I do NOT «run as admin» but instead tell the shortcut to Word to
run in «Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode». Everything described above acts
the same if I use either «run as admin» or «act like XP», this method ALSO
required UAC to prompt me in order for it to work. If I tell UAC to not
prompt me then the XP mode fails just like run as admin did. I am not sure
what «run as admin» and «XP compat» have in common when running with UAC
turned on but using either method results in the mouse working.

Also, the latest nVidia Video Driver for Windows 7 64-bit installed
(v8.16.11.8694), that version is in Windows Update and on Lenovo site.

Can someone please help?? I am using Windows Vista, but my question is about Word 2007. For some reason, I can’t click anywhere in my document. The cursor stays at the top of the screen and I have to use my arrow keys if I want to move the cursor. I also can’t right click, it’s as if it doesn’t recognize my house, even though it works in every other application as well as working with the icons in Word….

Very strange.

Please help!

kindly,

Hi Liz,

I have this exact problem everytime there’s a new windows update. Very annoying! Here’s what works for me:

hold down the windows key+R. This opens the ‘Run’ box. Type: ‘Regedit’ (without the apostrophes) then hit ok. This opens the Registry Editor.

In the registry editor open the following folders:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Microsoft / Office / 12.0 / Word

Then find the folder called ‘Data’. Right click on that folder, choose Rename and add a number to it i.e. ‘Data1’, then click off it so that the new name is saved. Try opening word again and test the rightclick

Hope that works for you too.

Cheers

If you have just installed an AddIn or the vendor of a software product installed an update with an AddIn this may be your problem.

In my situation:

It looks like Snagit (a screen capture program) sent out an update recently. I installed the update and Word would not allow the mouse to copy or paste text.

The problem was that Snagit automatically installed it’s Word Add In. (I had fixed this problem when I originally installed Snagit)

To fix this problem go into Word safe mode: Run > winword /safe (space after winword but not after forward slash) and when Word launches go to Window icon at the top left, select Word Options at the rectange button at the Bottom, select Add In and then remove the Add In’s.

Hi Neil,
This happened to me too! Couldn’t right click to spell check, copy, etc in Word. By following Neil’s directions- I can now fix it. Remember if you can’t right click just hold down your left mouse to change the file name to Data1.

Thanks so much for your input.

I cannot select text with my mouse in Word and Outlook. I can for a little while, then I can’t, so, I close and restart the applications again and all is well. This also means that I can’t drag anything like text that I have selected with the keyboard or table widths or tabs in the ruler bar…

The cause was unknown until today when I narrowed it down to the Ctrl key.

That is, as soon as I use the Ctrl key (for copy, paste, undo or even by itself for the purpose of this test), my ability to select and drag is gone.

There are no sticky keys. I am using Office 2010 (Professional 14.0.6112.5000 32-bit on Windows 7 Pro SP1).

I have uninstalled and re-installed Office. I have tried several registry edits offered by my findings with no luck.

Any ideas?

I found this question when my user was having this same problem — only in Outlook, they could not select text or move the mouse in any new message after using the CTRL key once while writing one (although the mouse worked for moving between fields in the new message, like From, to, Subject, and in all other applications). Was shocked to discover that it immediately worked again after right clicking in the message body.

As for why/how this fixed the issue or the root cause — I haven’t got a clue.

Hope this helps someone.

Instead of re-installing Office, you can use the Office diagnostic tools which may repair the problem. There should be a button…In the Word Options window click on the Resources option and then click the Diagnose button next to the ‘run Microsoft Office Diagnostics’ option. It may take a while to complete the diagnostic tests so be patient. Also make sure you are connected to the internet in case the diagnostic application has to connect the Microsoft servers.

Check if your mouse or some of your keys are locked or unlocked. For ex: your NUM LOCK key or your Caps key. Which can interfere and can be a pain. Hope it helps :)

I had a similar problem, not involving Ctrl key, but this was the first thing that came up in Google when I searched for help so thought I’d post my solution here for others.

Drag-select of words in Microsoft Word was inconsistently not working — the word would highlight, then on releasing the mouse button, the highlight was lost about 50% of the time — highly irritating.

I finally tracked it down to the fact I’d disabled my touch pad as was using a mouse — re-enabled the touch pad, problem solved!

This tip applies to Word 2007

Marlene notes that her touchpad and mouse do not work in Word 2007, but they do in all of her other Office 2007 programs. She has opened Word in safe mode and it showed that the OrgPlus plug-in was deactivated in safe mode, so she uninstalled OrgPlus. The touchpad and mouse still won’t work, and only in Word. She also reinstalled Word, but to no avail.

It is a good thought to start Word in safe mode and disable any add-ins that could possibly be causing the problem. In this case, however, the problem seems to be with Word itself. What you are experiencing is a symptom of data key corruption in the Windows Registry. It is caused when Word does an automatic update of the program and Word was running while the program was installed and the system restarted. (Sounds like a strange confluence of events, huh? Such is the wacky, fascinating world of technical support.)

This problem is described in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940791

Interestingly enough, Microsoft includes a «let us fix it for you» link on the site, so you don’t have to get your hands dirty messing in the Registry. If you prefer to edit the Registry yourself, instructions are included for that method, as well. (Editing the Registry to fix this problem is easy; you just need to delete a single data key.)
