Pulling in tracks from his five piano specials and bringing in a few new cuts to keep old and new fans tempted, this look back at Kern’s recent past show that he’s been making the most of his talents.  A solidly stacked set that introspective piano fans will take to heart, this collection really shows him in a great light. Setting the stage for good things to come, this date has just the right stuff for a proper look back on board.

More than Words is a wondrous collection of favorites from pianist Kevin Kern, derived from his five successful previous releases. Anyone familiar with the compositions of Kern knows he has a gift for being able to uplift. As such, these beauties are sure to bring a little tranquillity to one’s life and remain in their head long after the first listen. Included are “Above the Clouds,” his rendition of the Beatles’ “In My Life,” “Twilight’s Embrace” and two exquisite new tracks: “Out of the Darkness Into the Light” and “Children at Play.”

Who’s going to argue with a new age pianist who puts the images of musical notes cascading down a mountain waterfall on the cover of his greatest hits package? That’s a good matching visual for his caressing but often powerful ability to tap into the listener’s emotions. Music catalog, mostly original compositions in addition to his gorgeous takes on “In My Life” and Elton John’s little recognized but gorgeous “We All Fall in Love Sometimes.” The wistful lullaby “Children At Play” is a new track, and he creates a new orchestration for the previously released “Out of the Darkness.” If Jim Brickman is too poppy for you, the quieter, less commercial, always exquisite intimacy of Kevin Kern just might be the ticket.

More Than Words is an enchanting «best of» collection from Kevin Kern’s five previous albums and includes two new pieces. My only argument with the selection of the fourteen tracks is the inclusion of both of the cover tunes Kern had on his «In My Life» album over any of his original work from that album. Both «In My Life» and «We All Fall in Love Sometimes» are great arrangements, but there was some beautiful original work on that album, too, and none of those pieces were included. Other than that, most of these pieces HAD to be on a «best of» collection — «After the Rain,» «Sundial Dreams,» and «Through the Arbor» from «In the Enchanted Garden» are pretty-much Kern’s signature pieces, as is «Twilight’s Embrace» from «Summer Daydreams.». «Above the Clouds» and «Blossom on the Wind» from last year’s «Embracing the Wind» open and close the collection with warmth and serenity. «From This Day Forward» from the same album was written for Kern’s wedding and is so warm and loving that my CD player almost smiles whenever I play it! «Out of the Darkness Into the Light» was composed for the «Freedom to Love» compilation, and appeared there as a piano solo. Kern orchestrated the piece, and included it on this CD — a beautiful tribute to those lost in the attacks of 9/11. The other new piece is «Children At Play,» is a wistful piano and guitar duet that is full of Kern’s trademark gentleness and warmth. Even if you have all of Kern’s albums, the grouping of the pieces on this CD is wonderful, making the pieces fresh and new again. If you are new to Kevin Kern’s work, this is an outstanding introduction! My only words of warning are to not use this CD in a wake-up CD player. I slept through 45 minutes of it one morning, and although I had some lovely little dreams in the process, woke up late and in a panic when I realized what time it was! Yep, the music is that peaceful! Very highly recommended for all other purposes!

I’ve been a fan of Kevin Kern’s piano music for a long time because he consistently delivers fine compositions along with his simple but effective arrangements. The romantic piano style of Kevin Kern is always relaxing, never rushed and has a very warm feeling throughout. The light orchestral accompaniments make each song sound like a movie theme, although on one of the older pieces from this anthology, the synthesized violins sound a little too synthetic for my taste. If you’re looking for a relaxing recording to mellow out to, look no further. More Than Words, by Kevin Kern keeps the mood quiet, simple and heartfelt throughout. His piano technique is nothing fancy, but the “feeling“ is always there. And that’s really what counts. Fourteen songs in all, including two new compositions written especially for this collection make More Than Words an uplifting and tranquil addition to any CD collection. Highly recommended.
