<<How to answer «May I have a word with you?»>>
This is a question from an English test paper in China. The three choices «I’d like to» , «What’s that?» and «Sorry, I’m too busy now» all sound ok to me. Please tell me the right choice and why the others are wrong. Thanks!

To me, «I’d like to» is short for «I’d like to have a word with you», so it is a very polite answer; «what’s that» is just straightforward, though it may not sound that good sometimes; «sorry, I’m too busy now» is the answer when you are really busy. So all these three are correct answers to me.

I suppose that in the real world you can can create scenarios where all three might be correct, but for a test, I would only choose #3: «Sorry, I’m too busy now.»
Generally, when someone asks to have a word with you, you either accept or decline. Accepting often means no answer at all – you just listen attentively or you follow the person for the word he or she wants to have with you. I’ve never heard anyone be enthusiastic, i.e. «I’d like to» or «I’d like that.» And «What’s that?» might be said if you didn’t hear the request in the first place and would like it repeated.

As with your other post today regarding «how do you feel,» this is an impossible question posed by a clueless test writer.
All we can do is wish you luck until you can escape ..

«What’s that?» could mean «I didn’t hear you. What did you say?» This could be appropriate, but is not really an answer.
