Phonics worksheets: rhyming words in pictures
Rhyming is important in early literacy as young students’ literacy skills are to listen and speak, rather than read and write. The auditory understanding of sounds and rhyming patterns help students as they later start putting sounds together to read words. In these visual worksheets, students identify which picture of the 3 shown rhymes with the first picture. Rhyming exercises without written words emphasize the phonetic nature of rhyming.

5 Rhyming Worksheets for Similar Sounding Words
Anyone who is learning to speak, read and listen in English knows how important vocabulary and pronunciation can be.
Whether you focus on syllable segmentation or if you target mouth anatomy, this list of rhyming worksheets can help put the concepts into practice.
Besides, how cool would it be if you could rhyme like your favorite musicians or poets? And really, some of the greatest storytellers use rhyming all the time in their books.
So let’s practice with these 5 rhyming worksheets. And all are ready to print and free to use.
1. Pass the Ball
In this activity, students have to think of as many rhyming words. First, the teacher starts the music and someone starts with a ball.
When they come up with a word, they pass the ball to another student. This process continues but they can’t repeat something that has already been said.
When the music stops, it’s the end of the game.
2. Rhyme Time
First, put your students into groups. Next, hand out the Rhyme Time activity sheet. Now, bring out your stopwatch and get your students to think of as many rhymes as possible for each group. Finally, the group with the most rhymes wins.
Your students are poets and they don’t even know it. Review the rhymes and have a classroom discussion on rhymes. For example, when do you hear rhymes? How about in songs poems?
3. Picture Rhymes
This is one of the funnest ESL worksheets in here.
If you’re practicing listening and speaking in English, then we all know how important vocabulary and pronunciation can be.
Whether you focus on syllable segmentation or mouth anatomy, this list of rhyming worksheets can help put the concepts into practice.
For the picture rhymes worksheet, each picture is a rhyme. What is it?
4. Roses are Red
Who knew rhymes could be so much fun? Finish the rhyme from the classic poem “Roses are red, violets are blue…”.
I love Valentine’s day and so will your kids with this ESL activity sheet.
5. Rhyming Word Search
One of the tougher rhyming worksheets, where students have to find rhyming words in the puzzle. We have underlined the rhyming syllable to help find the rhyme word in the word search puzzle.
For example, the “tomorrow” rhymes with “sorrow”. Instead of finding “tomorrow”, you have to find the word “sorrow” in the rhyming worksheet.
Can you find the rhyming words?
In these 5 rhyming worksheets, you’ve learned to match similar-sounding words.
If you can’t think of a word, just make one up as long as it had the rhyme in it.
We’ve found rhyme to work well in Kindergarten classes, but can really with for any age group.

Rhyming worksheets will help children improve their auditory skills. Have them say the words out-loud so they can hear that words that begin with different letters can have the same sound at the end. Practice will also help children when they learn to read and understand word families. An example of a word family is «at». Add one letter and you’ll have cat, bat, hat, sat, fat, mat, etc.
To print, simply click on the printable of your choice. This will open the file in PDF format. Please keep all copyright information intact.
The set of worksheets below asks the children to circle the picture in each row that rhymes with the first picture.
This series involves drawing a line from the picture on the left of the page to the picture that rhymes on the right side.
Here’s a fun cut and paste activity for rhyming. Cut out the six
pictures on the second sheet. Look at the picture in the first row on
the main worksheet and paste the two pictures that rhyme with it in the
boxes provided in each row.
Here’s a couple of worksheets that involve words that rhyme. Each of the
boxes contain three pictures. Two of the pictures rhyme. Have the
children circle the pictures that rhyme.

This rhyming activity can be challenging for young children, so start
with one page at a time. Cut the page into nine individual cards. Let
the children say the name of each picture out loud and «match» the
rhyming words.
When children understand the concept of matching sounds, remove one of the 3 rhyming cards from each set above (so there are pairs of rhyming cards) or use the pairs of rhyming cards below. Shuffle the cards, turn cards over face down and lay out in a grid on the table to play «Memory Match» by turning over two cards to see if they rhyme. If they do, the player gets to keep the cards. If not, they have to turn them back over and it is the next player’s turn. After turning one card up, if they can remember where they’ve seen a card that rhymes, they can turn it over and take the pair. Whoever ends up with the most pairs when the table is cleared wins!
Print on card-stock paper
so the cards are thicker and will not be see-through. Depending on the
ability of your child, play one, two or all three sheets.
