«Дедушка, почему ты всегда выглядишь таким грустным когда смотришь на это большое золотое кольцо со змеями?», спросил меня сегодня мой маленький внук Марк. Я не могу рассказать ему это сейчас. Эта история грустная. Но я старый, мое время подходит к концу. Когда Марку будет одиннадцать он получит это кольцо и письмо. Тогда он поймет.
Я был рожден в Риме в 41 и для меня это было лучшим местом во всем мире. Но когда мне было пятнадцать моя семья переехала в Великобританию — опасный остров полный диких кельтов. Мы жили рядом с Кембриджем в маленьком доме. Недалеко от нашего дома была большая стена. Римская территория кончалась там. Стена была высокая. Кельтское племя иценов жило рядом с этой стеной. Они не были врагами, но и не были друзьями.
Однажды, я сидел рядом со стеной, когда камень приземлился на мою ногу.
«Римская свинья! Уйди с нашей земли!» прокричал кто-то. Я посмотрел наверх и увидел девочку, стоящую на этой стене. Внезапно, она подскользнулась и упала. Она не двигалась. Я подумал он была мертва. Но она открыла глаза и улыбнулась.
«Со мной ничего не может случится», сказала она, «Я ношу кольцо моего отца». Она показала мне большое золотое кольцо на ее пальце.
«Кто твой отец?»,спросил я.
«Он друид!»
Тогда я был очень напуган. Мой дедушка рассказывал мне о друидах. Он был с Джулиусом Цезарем когда римляне впервые пришли к британским островам. Мой дед никак не мог забыть высоких злых мужчин с длинными белыми волосами и длинными белыми одеждами. «Они прокляли нас! Мы стали друзьями и встречались у стены или в лесу. У нас были замечательные разговоры обо всем в мире. Я знал пару кельтских слов, но латынь Хилори был лучше, поэтому мы разговаривали на латыни. Хилори рассказывала мне о деревьях, птицах и животных в Великобритании, а я рассказывал ей о Риме и великих Римских дорогах и мостах.
Было лишь одно облачко на горизонте. Мать Хилори была сестра Будикки, королевы полемени иценов. Хилори любила ее тетю.
«Она сильная, умная и справедливая», говорила Хилори. «Она всегда будет бороться за нашу свободу».
Мне не нравилось когда Хилори говорила о римлянах и кельтах и о проблемах между ними. Однажды, я понял почему:
Я был влюблен в нее. Я хотел взять ее в жены. Когда я сказал Хилори о своих чувствах, она сказала:»Я тоже люблю тебя. Давай поженимся». Три месяца спустя у нас была секретная свадьба. Мы не сказали нашим родителям и друзьям. Но наше счастье было недолгим. Я был в армии и наш легион должен был двигаться на север.
Когдя я говорил последнее прощай Хилори, она внезапно сказала:»Возвращайся живым, Патрик. Прийди за своим сыном».
Я был на севере, когда услышал страшные новости. Римляне начали войну с иценами. Они убивали их мужчин, женщин и детей.
«Вы должны отдать нам ваши деньги и землю», говорили римляне королеве Будикке. Будикка начала революцию. Она сожгла столицу Рима, Колчестер и убила всех римлян. Затем она сожгла Лондиниум. Женщина была беспощадна, но я мог ее понять. Наш легион поспешил назад в Колчестер. Когда мы были совсем рядом, мы увидели, что пришли слишком поздно. Наши семьи и друзья были мертвы. Было только одно, что мы хотели сделать — найти Будикку и ее людей и убить их всех. Наш легион выдвинулся на следующее утро. Я должен был пойти. Я был солдатом. Мы нашли иценов недалеко от Лондиниума. Там была ужасная схватка. Римляне и кельты гибли вокруг меня, но я не смотрел по сторонам. Я боролся за мою мать, за отца и за моих пятерых маленьких сестер. Внезапно я увидел Хилори. Она была под большим дубом. Старый друид стоял рядом с ней. Римские стрелы летали вокруг него, но он не замечал их. У него было что-то в руках.
Я побежал к ним. Хилори была в крови, но она улыбнулась, когда увидела меня. «Почему кольцо твоего отца не защитило тебя?» — кричал я.
«Я больше не нуждаюсь в нем», сказала она, я увидел слезы в ее глазах. «Моя жизнь заключается в жизни ицени, наше племя умрет вместе. Мы не можем изменить этого! Но есть надежда — наш сын. Он на половину римлянен, на половину кельт. Береги его! Прощай, моя любовь!» И она умерла.
Внезапно, друид заговорил.
«Ты не нравишься мне, молодой римлянен. Но я не могу ненавидеть тебя. Ты отец моего внука. Моя дочь любила тебя. Вот твой сын. Будь хорошим отцом для него. Возьми кольцо тоже. Магия друидов защитит тебя». Он дал мне моего сына. Затем он снял кольцо со своего пальца и вложил его в мою ладонь. «Спаси своего сына», сказал он. «И помни о друидах».
Я убежал в лес. Мой сын плакал в моих руках. Когда я оглянулся назад, я увидел друида под большим дубом. Он был мертв.
