Word-formation
is the system of derivative types of words and the process of
creating new words from material, available in the language after
certain structural and semantic formulas and patterns. A distinction
is made between two principal types of word-formation:
word-derivation

and word-composition.
The basic ways of forming words in word derivation are affixation
and conversion.
Affixation is the formation of a new word with the help of affixes
(f.e.
heartless; overdo
).
Conversion is the formation of a new word by bringing a stem of this
word into a different formal paradigm (f.e.
a private, to paper
).
The basic form of the original and the basic form of the derived
words are homonymous.

Conversion
is
one of the principal ways of forming words in Modern English. It is
highly productive in replenishing the English word-stock with new
words. Conversion consists in making a new word from some existing
word by changing the category of a part of speech; the morphemic
shape of the original word remains unchanged (f.e. paper – to
paper).

The
new word acquires a meaning, which differs from that of the original
one but it can be easily associated with it. The converted word
acquires also a new paradigm and a new syntactical function which are
peculiar to its new category as a part of speech.

Among
the main varieties of conversion are: 1 – verbalization (f.e. the
verb to
ape
from
the noun ape);
2 – substantivation (f.e. the noun a
private
from
the adj. private);
3 – adjectivation (f.e. the adj. down
from the adverb down);
4 — adverbalization (f.e. the adverb home
from the noun home);

The
2 categories of parts of speech especially affected by conversion are
nouns and verbs. Verbs made from nouns are the most numerous among
the words produced by conversion. (f.e. to eye, to monkey). Nouns are
frequently made from verbs. Verbs can also be made from adjectives.
(f.e. to yellow). Other parts of speech are not entirely
unsusceptible to conversion (f.e. to down, to out). In case of
polysemantic words one and the same member of a conversion pair may
belong to several groups.

Diachronic
approach of conversion

The
causes that made conversion so widely spread are to be approached
diachronically. Nouns & verbs have become identical in form
because of the loss of endings. When endings had disappeared,
phonetic development resulted in the merging of sound forms for both
elements of these pairs. The similar phenomena can be observed in
words borrowed from the French language.

From
the diachronic point of view distinction should be made between
homonymy word pairs which appeared as a result of the loss of
inflections and hose formed by conversion. The diachronic semantic
analysis of the conversion pair reveals that in the course of time
the semantic structure of the base may ( ) a new meaning or
several meanings under the influence of the meanings of the
conversion word.

Basic
criteria of semantic derivation in conversion.

There
are different criteria of differentiating between the source and the
derived word in a conversion pair.

  1. The
    criterion of the non-correspondence

between the lexical meaning of the root-morpheme and the part of
speech meaning of the stem in one or the two words in a conversion
    pair. In the pair father
    – to father

the noun is the name for a being. The lexical meaning of the
root-morpheme corresponds to the part of speech meaning the stem.
The verb to father denotes a process therefore the part of speech
meaning of its stem doesn’t correspond to the lexical meaning of
the root which is of a substantive character. Here the verb to
father can be considered the derived member in the conversion pair.

  2. The
    synonymity criterion.
    This
criterion is based on the comparison of a conversion pair with
analogous synonymous word-group. E.g. comparing the conversion pair
    chat(v)-chat(n)
with the synonymous pair of words to
    converse – conversation
    ,
it becomes obvious that the noun chat
is the derived member as the semantic relations in the case of to
    chat – chat

are similar to those between to
    converse – conversation
    .
The synonymity criterion is considerably restricted in its
    application.

  3. The
    criterion of derivational relations.

    In
the word cluster, for instance, hand(n)–hand(v)–handful-handy
the derived words of the first degree of derivation have suffixes
added to the nominal base: handful, handy. Thus, the noun hand is
the center of the word cluster and the word ‘to hand’ is the
derived member in the conversion pair under analysis.

  4. The
    criterion of semantic derivation.

    This
criterion is based on semantic relations within conversion pairs.
The existence of relations typical of denominal verbs within the
conversional pair proves that the verb is derived member, the
existence of relations typical of deverbal substantives marks the
noun as the derived member.E.G.: the semantic relations between
    crowd(n)
    crowd(v)
    — ‘an object and an action characteristic of the object’. This
fact makes it possible to conclude that the verb crowd
    is the derived member.

  5. The
criterion of the frequency of occurrence.
    A
lower frequency value testifies to the derived character of the word
in question. The noun is the derived member.

  6. The
    transformational criterion.

    The
application of the transformational procedure may be illustrated by
a change of a predicative syntagma into a nominal syntagma.E.G.: Roy
loves nature – Roy’s love of nature
    .
    The noun love
    is the derived member.

Essentially, it’s a word maker from letters device that creates all the possible choices from the available letters. This includes developing other words from the letters in existing words.

How to Use a Word Solver Website — 3 Easy Steps

Websites that feature a word maker from letters tool can be great fun to use! Some are more intuitive than others but, generally, this is how to use them:

Step #1: Research & Choose

You have to prepare before you start your game. Try a few word solver websites first to see how they work and stay with the one you like the most. Keep it open while playing.

Step #2: Find the appropriate tool.

For example, if you’re trying to solve an anagram, you can click on our Anagram Solver.

Step #3: Enter the letters

Type in the letters of the word that you’re working with.

Say that you have the following word ─ DESSERT. Once you enter it, the anagram solver will present this word ─ STRESSED.

Don’t forget that you can use the advanced filter function. It will help you zero in on word options that start or end with particular letters or contain certain letters or any wildcards.

Wordsolver Apps

You can also download a word generator app to your cell phone. There are some very cool ones out there. Basically, you just go to the app store on your phone or find an online app store, browse what’s available and download the one that you like best. Wordmaker apps operate similarly to those that you find online on websites.

Make Words for Scrabble & WWF
