Make spelling word sentences

Many teachers assign homework with their list of weekly spelling words. The assignment may be to use their spelling words in sentences or to write a story using their spelling words. Both of these assignments can be daunting for a lot of kids. So, what can you do to make these assignments easier?

Writing Sentences with Your Spelling Words

The first step is to list the spelling words on a separate sheet of paper. For younger students, sometimes, it is easiest to write the list for them. Once they use a word, make sure to mark an ‘x’ or checkmark next to it. This makes it easy for your kids to keep track of which words have been used.

Then, create some leading questions to help your kids start generating sentences using the words on their list. Ask them where, when, how, why, or what regarding the word always sparks a response. Sometimes kids are able to tie one sentence into another using several of the words.

Be silly and have fun! Let the kids be creative. Write down the ideas that are brought up by the kids from their list of words. Before you know it, the ideas using the spelling words make sentences that just need to be recopied. And, in the process, you will have some great one-on-one time.

Example spelling words: high, near, every, west, lives

Prompt

Sentence

What is something that is high in your room? My china doll is on the high shelf in my room.
Who is someone near you? My best friend Marcos lives near me.
When do you do something every day? I brush my teeth every morning.
Where is west? Or who lives in the west? My uncle lives on the west coast in San Francisco.

Writing Stories with Your Spelling Words

The same process can be applied to story writing as well. Keep in mind when kids try to write at the same time as they are creating their story, they typically create ‘holes’ in the story, places where words have been left out. This is because their brain is working faster than their hand. They typically write the first few words of the first thought down and then the second thought comes to them and they start writing it as the second half of the first sentence. It helps to have them re-read their work and to even re-write the ‘draft’ of the story. This way, they will likely even catch their own errors.

Simple Ways to Write a Story Using Your Spelling Words

  • Start the same way as writing individual sentences with your spelling words by having your word list next to you.
  • Talk about where the story would take place, the time of day, who would be in the story, and what the character might be doing. that covers the who, what, where, and when that is needed when writing a story.
  • As you talk about those things, write down the ideas.
  • Then have the child tell the story, putting in the spelling words. Write the story down as it is being told to you.
  • Every once in a while they may get ahead of themselves and you may say, “Wait a minute, how did he (the character) get from here to here? You need to tell us.”
  • So, then the transition needs to be filled in.
  • Double-check to be sure that all of the words are used (check them off your list next to you as you go), adding any that needed to be added.
  • After this session (about 20 minutes), the story is done.
  • Then, have the student recopy it to be turned in the next day.

Asking learners to write sentences with spelling words is one of the most common spelling assignments. While we definitely want to include lots of hands-on spelling activities and word study, spelling sentences have been around since the dinosaurs… and I don’t think they are going anywhere anytime soon.

My 2nd grader is attending a hybrid school this year {2 days in class, 3 days at home} and he came home last week with the assignment to use some of his spelling words to write sentences. Knowing that this kind of spelling activity {while beneficial} can be a little on the dry side, I decided to add a little fun with this Roll & Write page.

Roll & Write Sentences with Spelling Words

All you need for this Roll & Write spelling activity is a list of spelling words, paper, pencil, a die {these look fun & quiet}, and my Roll & Write page.

“Play” is simple, too! The learner just rolls the die and matches the number to the sentence writing activity on the page.

writing sentences with spelling words using roll and write activity page

Then, he thinks of and writes a sentence that includes the spelling word on his paper.

The Roll & Write Activities are:

Roll 1 – Use 2 adjectives in your sentence. {Instead of saying, “I saw a cat,” the learner might write, “I saw a little, brown cat.”}
Roll 2– Ask a question.
Roll 3– Use ”  ” to show someone is talking.
Roll 4– Add but, then make your sentence longer. {I took a bath, but I am still dirty.}
Roll 5– Write a silly sentence.
Roll 6– End with an !

roll and write sentences with spelling words in color

The free download has 4 color pages {2 boy / 2 girl} and 4 black & white ones that you can color in yourself, if you’d like! If you plan on using this at a spelling center, I’d highly recommend laminating it so it can be used over and over.

A Few Random Thoughts

  • Model this activity with the learner before expecting him to use it independently. Think of sentences together and provide extra support before you set him free to do it on his own. For example, he may not understand how to use quotation marks or what an adjective is. Model, model, model.
  • If any of the activities don’t apply well to the spelling word, roll again.
  • Don’t force this Roll & Write page on any learner. If the child wants to write his own sentences without the page, let him! This isn’t meant to add stress, but make writing sentencs with spelling words a little more fun.

Here are some fabulous ideas for
helping your children practice their
spellings at home!
Please help your child practice their
spellings every night in preparation for
their weekly spelling test.
Draw and colour a picture. Hide your
spelling words inside your picture.
Show your picture to someone
and see if they can find your
hidden words!
Write silly sentences
using a spelling word in each
sentence. Make sure you underline
your spelling words!
Example: My dog wears a blue and
purple dress when he takes a bath.
Write your spelling words forwards
and then backwards. Write neatly!
Example:
where
erehw
“Pyramid write” your spelling words.
You must write neatly!
*Example:
home
h
ho
hom
home
Choose one of your spelling words.
Write an acrostic poem for that word.
You must also ILLUSTRATE your poem.
*Example:
fly
Fun in the sky.
Laps around clouds.
Yes! I’m free!
Write your spelling words in bubble
letters. After you write your words in
bubble letters, colour your words with
a crayon or colored pencil.
Write a story using ALL of your
spelling words. Be sure to underline
your spelling words in your paragraph.
You could even type your story like an
author!
Write a riddle for each of your spelling
words. Don’t forget to add the
answers to your riddles.
*Example- I cry when I am hungry. I wear
nappies. I am cute and cuddly. What am I?
*Answer - Baby
Each letter has a value.
*Consonants are worth 10.
*Vowels are worth 5.
Write your spelling words. Then add up
the value of each spelling word.
Examplesaid- 10 + 5 + 5 + 10 = 30
First write each word in pencil.
Then trace over each word three
times. Each time you trace, you
must use a DIFFERENT colour
crayon. Trace neatly and you will see
a rainbow!
Your job is to write a creative letter
to Superman (or another super hero).
In your letter, you must use each of
your spelling words. Be sure to
underline your words as you use them.
Write a poem using several of your
spelling words. Underline the words
that you use. Illustrate your poem.
You can write any type of
poem that you like. Enjoy!
Find a countertop or flat surface that can
be cleaned easily. Spray a small amount of
shaving cream and spread it out.
Write your spelling words in the
shaving cream and be sure to clean up
afterwards! Make sure you ask an
adult first!
Write ten of your
spelling words in dots.
Then connect the dots by tracing
over them with a coloured pencil.
Write each of your spelling words.
Next to each word, write a rhyming
word. If necessary, your rhyming word
can be a nonsense word (as long as it
follows the same spelling pattern).
*Example:
cries
tries
Come up with a code for each letter of the
alphabet. Write down your code.
*Example: a=
b=
c=
Write each of your spelling
words using fancy letters.
Then write your spelling words in code.
You must write the actual spelling word
next to the “code word.”
Your letters can have curly-q’s
or dots, for example. Have fun!
Use sign language finger spelling to sign
the spelling of your words.
Check out Unity Kid’s site
Write each of your spelling
words. Write each letter using
a different colored pencil!
http://www.unitykid.com/signlanguage.html
to see animated hands making the
letters so you can practice!
*Example -
colourful
Number the alphabet from 1-26.
Example: a=1, b=2, c=3, d=4, etc.
Then convert your words to a
number code.
You must write the actual spelling word next
to the “code word.”
Use an old magazine and find
your words (or the letters
that make up your word).
Cut them out and glue on your
paper.
Use your finger to spell out each of your
spelling words, one letter at a time, on
your mum or dad’s back.
Then it’s YOUR turn to try to
FEEL and spell!
Write each of your words on two different
pieces of card. Turn all the cards face down
and mix them up. Lay out your cards in rows)
and flip over two cards at a time. Read each
card aloud to see it they match. Keep them if
they match or flip over and try again!
Make a word search puzzle using
your spelling words.
Use the Discovery School’s
online Puzzle Maker
http://www.puzzlemaker.com.
Then find your words!
Write a song or rap that
includes your words!
Share with a friend or family
member.
Take a practice test. Have your Mom or
Dad ask you to spell your spelling words.
Write them on a list. Check your
practice test and correct any missed
words. This would be an especially
good activity to complete the night
before a test!
Use old magazines, catalogs, or
newspapers to cut out letters.
Glue the letters down on a piece of
paper to spell your words.
*Helpful Hint: Cut out lots of extra
letters. Store them in a Ziploc bag for
future use. This is a huge timesaver!
