your tongue when you have finished brushing your teeth.

Don’t
share your toothbrush with others. It may spread germs.

  Remove
plaque and food particles by flossing once a day. It is usually best to floss
in the evening before you go to bed.

Wrap about 18 inches of
floss around your middle fingers and gently slide the floss between each tooth.

Curve
the floss to form a “C” shape and gently move it up and down to the gum line.

Use a
fresh section as you floss each tooth. This will avoid transfer of food debris.

Visit
your dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning.

The
dentist will examine you for tooth decay, gum disease, and check how your teeth
are growing.

The
dentist may also treat your teeth with a fluoride sealant to help prevent tooth
decay.

Avoid
eating sugary treats and sodas whenever possible. They are a major cause of
tooth decay.

If you
cannot brush after eating sweets, rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash.

Choose
healthy snacks such as, popcorn, raw vegetables, fruit, cheese, or sugar-free
yogurt.

Calcium is important for building strong bones and teeth. A good source
of calcium includes low-fat
milk, cheese, yogurt, and tofu.

Mouth Guards:

Mouth
guards are designed to help cushion the mouth, teeth, and jaw.

  A guard
may prevent serious injury and keep from fracturing jaws, teeth, and severe
cuts to the cheeks

5 Tips For Healthy Living
On The Go

Are
you a busy entrepreneur or employee who is usually on the go
and doesn’t have a lot of time, but still wants to get more healthy? Don’t
worry, you’re not alone. Most people want to get healthy, more fitter
and look younger, yet they can’t seem to find the time for it. Here are
five tips for healthy living on the go:

1. Enjoy a pint of water
first thing in the morning.

If you haven’t got time
for anything else in the morning, make time to drink a big glass of water. We
lose a lot of oxygen through the night and to rejuvenate our cells,
we need to supply them with water and oxygen. Drink a glass of water and within
a week you’ll begin to feel less tired.

2. Grab a few fresh fruits on your way out.

Wherever you’re going –
whether it’s a walk or drive to the supermarket or on your way to a meeting – pick
up
one or two fruits and eat them. Fruits are great for their nutrients,
vitamins and sugars that are required in our body.

3. Exercise on the go.

If you work in an office, get
up
every 30 minutes and go for a walk. If you have an office with stairs,
run up and down the stairs every couple of hours. Get your blood flowing and
your muscles moving.

4. Eat a handful of nuts.

Get
your favorite selection of nuts (almonds, cashews, pecans,
walnuts, etc.) and raisins and have a big handful of them at
around 3pm. This has been shown to increase afternoon energy and productivity.

5.
Deep
breathing.

When you’ve got time – at
your desk, driving the car, cooking food – do some deep breathing. Inhale
and count up to 5 seconds, hold it for a few seconds, and release
slowly. Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide is one of the best things
we can do for our blood and cells.

b) Translate the odd words.

Write what advice you often follow and how you do
it.

What advice you found good.

c) Discussion of questions:

1.
Do you
think you have a healthy life style?

2.
Why do
many people try to have a healthy life style?

3.
What
is better for health?

4.   What do
you prefer, to eat everything you like, drink a lot, smoke, have no physical
exercise and die at the age of 60 or lead a healthy life and live until 100?

A THOUSAND DISEASES

After Jerome K. Jerome

I remember going to the British museum one day to
read up on the treatment for some slight disease. I got

down the book and read all I had come to read.
Then without realizing what I was doing I turned the leaves

and began to study diseases generally. I forget
which was the first disease I read about, but before I looked

through the list of the symptoms I felt that I had
it. I kept on reading, feeling rather nervous, and realized

that I was suffering from every disease
imaginable. The only thing I had not got so far was housemaid’s

knee. To say that I was worried and upset and that
I felt miserable would be to say nothing. I nearly

fainted. In fact
I felt more dead than alive. I tried to examine myself. I felt my pulse. I
discovered that I had

no pulse. I tried o feel my heart. I could not
feel my heart. It had stopped beating. I tried to look at my

tongue. I stuck it out as far as I would go. I
shut one eye, and tried to examine it with the other. I could only

see the tip but I no longer doubted that in
addition to everything I had scarlet fever.

It
became clear to me that I would never recover and would never get rid of the
thousand diseases I had. I gave up all hope. Medicine could not help me. I had
walked into the reading room a happy healthy man, I walked out an invalid.

Though I doubted if anyone
would be able to cure my diseases, I went to consult my physician. I always
turn to him for advise and help. He is a nice fellow and an old friend of mine.
He had been treating me for many years. I never make an appointment with him,
he is always glad to see me. He looks at my tongue, feels my pulse, talks about
the weather, and all for nothing, when I imagine that I am ill. He never
remains indifferent to what I say and always does his best to encourage me when
I start complaining of my diseases. I thought that he would be thankful
if I went to him. “What a doctor wants,” I said to myself, “is practice. He
shall have me. He will get more practice out of me than out of seventeen
hundred ordinary patients with only one or two common diseases each.”

“Well, what’s the matter with you? Got any
complaints?” he asked.

I did not pretend to be calm. My whole life
depended on what he would say.

11

UNIT 14.
Doctor, Doctor. Student’s Book

“I will not take up your
time, dear fellow, by telling you what is the matter with me,” I began. “Life
is short and you may die before I’m through. But I’ll tell you right away what
is not the matter with me. I haven’t got housemaid’s knee. Why I haven’t got it
I cannot tell you. But the fact remains that I haven’t got it. Everything else
I have got. My life is in danger.”

I told him how I came to
discover it all. I didn’t pretend I wasn’t frightened. He took my temperature,
felt my pulse, and then hit me over the chest when I wasn’t expecting it. After
that he sat down and wrote out a prescription. He folded it and giving it to me
said that I had better go home.

I
didn’t open the prescription. I went to the nearest pharmacy to have it
filled. The chemist read the prescription and handed it back. He apologized for
being unable to help me. He said he didn’t keep it and smiled. I got very much annoyed,
I didn’t see the joke.

I
said, “You are the chemist, aren’t you?” He did not deny it. “I am a
chemist,” he said. “If I were a department store and a family hotel combined, I
might help you. But the matter is I only a chemist. That’s why I can’t oblige
you.”

I read the prescription. It said:

“1 lb. beefsteak, with

1 pt. beer every six hours.

1
ten-mile
walk every morning.

1
bed at
11 sharp every night.

And avoid stuffing your head with the
things you don’t understand.”

I felt received. My
life was out of danger. I didn’t tear up the prescription or throw it away. I
followed the directions with the happy result – my life was saved and is still
going on. My health has improved. But I never mention the incident to
anyone.
